MISSION | 3

Page 3: AMERICAN BALLET THEATRE · 2019-10-25 · Ballet. Almost 1,500 students participated in ABT Summer Intensives in five cities, receiving the wisdom of ABT’s extraordinary teaching

How did we serve this bold mission in 2018?

We created: ABT commissioned five world premieres in 2018: Harlequinade, AFTERITE, Praedicere, Dream within a Dream (deferred), and Garden Blue. These new works were created by MacArthur Geniuses Alexei Ratmansky and Michelle Dorrance, trailblazer Wayne McGregor, and 20-year ABT collaborator Jessica Lang.

We presented: ABT brought epic ballet theatre from Lincoln, Nebraska to Hong Kong, and from Detroit to Singapore. We also brought communities together in Washington, DC, Chicago, Orange County, and Los Angeles to celebrate the dynamism, diversity, and excellence of the ABT dancers.

We preserved: Alexei Ratmansky’s faithful recreation of Marius Petipa’s Harlequinade, created in 1900 and rarely seen since the 1920s, was an important historical exploration for a modern master. A co-production with the Australian Ballet, Harlequinade involved almost 40 students from the ABT Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School and challenged the ABT dancers to engage in storytelling from another era.

We extended: Wayne McGregor introduced the dancers to a daring new choreographic process and a unique, kinetic movement vocabulary, Michelle Dorrance asked the dancers to explore complex percussive sound, and Jessica Lang introduced large sculptural objects for the dancers to navigate and manipulate. In addition, the ABT Studio Company engaged Claudia Schreier, Stefanie Batten Bland,

and Gemma Bond, and Pam Tanowitz conducted a 2-week workshop in ABT studios. The engagement of female choreographers is propelled by the ABT Women’s Movement, our institutional commitment to elevating women in creative leadership positions.

We also introduced ABT Incubator, directed by David Hallberg, to offer emerging choreographers the opportunity to work with ABT dancers, and to allow ABT dancers the opportunity to participate in the creative process. Of the five choreographers selected for the inaugural year, three were ABT dancers developing new works with their peers and colleagues.

We provided educational programming of the highest quality: The ABT talent pipeline is robust and thriving. In 2018, four students from the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis School were promoted to the Studio Company, nine Studio Company members were promoted to Apprentice, and seven apprentices joined the Corps de Ballet. Almost 1,500 students participated in ABT Summer Intensives in five cities, receiving the wisdom of ABT’s extraordinary teaching faculty and pursuing their dreams of one day dancing with American Ballet Theatre. In addition, nearly 5,000 students from NYC public schools attended free, narrated performances, and students at 15 NYC public schools were served through the ABT at School Residency Program.

We inspired the widest possible audience, and we continue to reach still wider: ABT kicked off multi-year partnerships with Duke University in Durham, NC and with the Auditorium

Theatre in Chicago. In addition to our popular ABTKids program for children and families, which we offered to sold-out crowds in New York and Chicago, we introduced a Fall Family Matinee, which included ballet-themed trick-or-treating for children attending the performance in their Halloween costumes. And beyond the world’s great stages on land, we partnered with Celebrity Cruises to bring ABT dancers to new audiences on ships around the world. Our social media following is robust and growing, and we continue to seek opportunities to amplify our dancers’ stories, in non-traditional performance venues, in conversation and conference settings, and on digital platforms.

As we raise our sights and our aspirations, we are strengthening the Board, the Staff, and the fan base for America’s National Ballet Company. In 2018, we began a multi-year process focused on fostering increased Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) at ABT and in ballet.  Our focused commitment to DEI is essential to ABT’s continued excellence and resonance. We are actively deepening our commitment to DEI to reflect the diversity of America on our stages and in our training programs, in our audiences, and behind the scenes in our leadership ranks. In all of this work, we seek to forge community cohesion and shared experiences through the dynamism and power of world class dance.

Ballet is a collaborative art form. As a result, we extend our gratitude and our admiration to all of our artists, our colleagues, our partners, and our friends around the world. For your courage. For your energy. For your generosity of spirit.

LET TER The mission of American Ballet Theatre is to create, to present, to preserve, and to extend the great repertoire of classical dancing, through exciting performances and educational programming of the highest quality, presented to the widest possible audience..

2018 WORLD PREMIERE S

Artist in Residence Alexei Ratmansky brought this lost classic to life with a bold new staging, inspired by the archival notes of Marius Petipa. Audiences reveled in pure comedic joy as Harlequin fights for his true love, Columbine, against her father’s wishes. Full of madcap humor and delightful dancing, this tribute to the Italian commedia dell’arte tradition is a visual treat for the whole family.

The World Premiere of Harlequinade was the centerpiece of ABT’s 2018 Spring Season with eight performances at the Metropolitan Opera House, followed by five performances at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts in Costa Mesa, California, and seven performances at the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington D.C.

DIVER SITY, EQUITY AND INCLUSIONIn September of 2018, American Ballet Theatre launched a formal, organization-wide Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion (the ‘’DEI Initiative’’) Initiative after many years of departmental specific efforts in this realm.

The DEI Initiative began with a voluntary survey of the staff, dancers, crew and the Board of Trustees to determine overall attitudes and observations about diversity, equity and inclusion at American Ballet Theatre. Following the administration of these surveys, ABT led internal focus groups to facilitate safe spaces for open discussions about diversity, equity, and inclusion within the ABT community. All the while, a Steering Committee, consisting of staff, crew, and dancers from all levels of the organization, were asked to serve as a leaders and ambassadors to assist with the process of gathering and disseminating information amongst the members of the ABT community, while also participating in a DEI Learning Series and assisting with the development of DEI definition, vision, behaviors and leadership practices. On a parallel track, ABT’s Senior Staff also participated in a DEI Learning Series which exposed this leadership group to the intricacies and nuances of DEI work. As a culmination of this concerted effort which amplified the voices of individuals from all levels of the organization, a framework for a three-year DEI Strategic Plan was born. The same concerted and deliberate effort will be used to hone this plan and begin implementation in 2019 and throughout ABT’s 80th anniversary year in 2020.

PROJECT PLIÉ

American Ballet Theatre’s Project Plié initiative identifies promising young dancers, dance teachers and emerging arts administrators of color to participate in high-quality training programs.

In 2018, ABT trained nineteen students in the ABT JKO School Bridge Class program and reached 741 students in thirty-one Boys & Girls Club of America locations through Master Classes across the United States.

ABTKids ABT FAMILY FRIENDLY MATINEE

On May 19, 2018, over 2,000 children and their families streamed into the Metropolitan Opera House to experience the magic of ballet at ABTKids. In a unique, one-hour narrated performance for children ages 4-12, ABT’s dancers brought characters from the classical ballet canon to life for young audience members and pulled back the curtain at the Metropolitan Opera House to introduce families and children to ballet. Following the performance, ABTKids supporters and their families gathered for treats, creative activities led by ABT Teaching Artists, and photo opportunities with costumed dancers.

A special matinee on Saturday, October 27, 2018 at the David H. Koch Theater featured family-friendly programming from American Ballet Theatre’s Fall Season and Halloween-themed activities on the promenade.

Families were invited to wear their favorite costumes and Trick-or-Treat with ABT prior to the performance and during intermission. Attendees had the opportunity to meet an ABT dancer, explore different styles of dance shoes at the “Dance Shoe Petting Zoo,” pose for photos on ABT’s “Costume Catwalk” and enter a contest for “Best Ballet-Inspired Costume.”

ABT WOMEN’S MOVE MENT EDUCATION PROGRAMS

In 2018, American Ballet Theatre launched ABT Women’s Movement, formerly the Women Choreographers Initiative. ABT Women’s Movement is a multi-year initiative to support the creation, exploration and staging of new works by women for ABT and the ABT Studio Company. ABT Women’s Movement will support at least three female choreographers each season to create new works for American Ballet Theatre. In 2018, five new works were commissioned for ABT and ABT Studio Company: Interchangeable Text by Gemma Bond, Praedicere by Michelle Dorrance, Garden Blue by Jessica Lang, Le Jeune by Lauren Lovette, and Neon by Claudia Schreier.

ABT’s Engagement Programs reached over 15,000 students through in-school residency and ticket distribution programs. Highlights included over 100 Make a Ballet students performing on the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House alongside Company members at the Young People’s Ballet Workshop and a series of Pre-Performance Workshops during the company’s engagement in Hong Kong.

“The ABT Women’s Movement takes inspiration from the groundbreaking female choreographers who have left a lasting impact on ABT’s legacy...”

—Kevin McKenzie

Champion Support for the ABT Women’s Movement is provided by Jenna Segal.

Additional support is provided by Mark Casey and Carrie Gaiser Casey, Donna and Richard Esteves, Margee and John Falk, Janine and J. Tomilson Hill, the National Endowment for the Arts, Rockefeller Brothers Fund, The Leila and Mickey Straus Family Foundation, Denise Littlefield Sobel, The Laurie M. Tisch Illumination Fund, Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation, Elizabeth Benedict Yntema, and through an endowed gift from the Toni and Martin Sosnoff New Works Fund.

ABT also recognizes the generosity of all donors who have contributed to the ABT Women’s Movement.

4,700 students from NYC public schools were served by Young People’s Ballet Workshops, a free semi-annual, narrated performance by ABT Main Company and Studio Company dancers.

1,750 students at 15 NYC schools were served through the ABT-at-School Residency Program.

3,200 free and discounted tickets to ABT’s Spring Season at the Metropolitan Opera were distributed to NYC public school students through ABT’s Ticket Distribution Program.

400 students across six private schools participated in ABT’s Ballet for the New Audience program.

SPRING GAL A FALL GAL A

The Spring Gala on May 21, 2018 highlighted ABT’s commitment to create, present, and extend the great repertoire of classical dancing with a mixed bill featuring the ballets of Alexei Ratmansky, Michelle Dorrance, and Wayne McGregor. Following the performance, more than 600 guests gathered on the Promenade of the David H. Koch Theater, adorned with brilliant spring blossoms, for one of New York’s most elegant black-tie dinner dances. Harry Winston, Spring Gala Presenting Sponsor, lent an extra sparkle to the evening. Proceeds from the Spring Gala support ABT’s dancers and productions, as well as its extensive education and outreach programs.

The Fall Gala on October 17, 2018 at the David H. Koch Theater highlighted the ABT Women’s Movement, celebrating the creation, exploration, and staging of works by women. With groundbreaking works by Michelle Dorrance, Lauren Lovette, and Twyla Tharp, the Fall Gala reaffirmed the Company’s commitment to artistic innovation and inclusion. Following the performance, guests gathered on the Promenade for dinner and dancing. Proceeds from the Fall Gala support ABT, the ABT Women’s Movement, and educational outreach programs.

HOLIDAY BENEFIT

American Ballet Theatre celebrated the holidays in Los Angeles on December 17, 2018 as 300 guests gathered in the famed ballroom at the Beverly Hilton for a festive evening of holiday cheer and dancing. Hosted by actress Jennifer Garner, the Holiday Benefit highlighted ABT’s dancers in enchanting excerpts of classical and contemporary repertoire. With scenes from some of ballet’s most treasured classics, including The Nutcracker and works from modern day masters Michelle Dorrance and Alexei Ratmansky, it was a terrific showcase of America’s National Ballet Company®. The Holiday Benefit celebrates ABT’s vibrant and expanding presence in Southern California. Proceeds from the Holiday Benefit support American Ballet Theatre and its educational outreach programs.
