This Monday and Tuesday the Retrievers will travel into the depths of Winter Storm Nemo to compete in the America East Championship hosted by the Reggie Lewis Center in Boston. No meet matters as much as this one, so expect a ton of personal best and All Time UMBC performances as the Indoor Track and Field teams will make a run at the Conference titles. The Retrievers have five number one seeds in the short sprints with Mercedes Jackson and Denny Long both entering the meet as the fastest 60 meter and 200 meter sprinters in the Conference. Jackson will be looking to build upon her Newcomer of the Year award from last year and turn it into the Track Performer of the Meet. In addition, Trae Proctor leads the Conference in the 60 meter hurdles where he will be looking for his third straight title in the event. The long sprints will be led by Kirsten Jones who is the number three seed in the 400 meters and Paulette Fogle who has the fastest 500 meters entering the meet. Together they have bookended the 4x400 meter relay that broke the school record last weekend and both are in range of the school records in their individual events. D’Nique Philip and Kalane Abbey should also factor into the 400 meter scoring. The 800 meters will be a big event for the Retrievers with junior Andrew Smith looking to score for the third consecutive year, only this time he enters the meet as the number one seed. For the women, Sarah Daly and Cody Mezebish should both be high up in scoring contention with Daly entering with the fifth fastest time and Mezebish finishing fifth last year. The 1000 meters will have MK Kulp and Andrew Keresztes both seeded in scoring positions. The mile features Jake Albino who finished fifth in the 1500 meters in the Outdoor Championships and is well within range of a top three position. The 3,000 meters will offer up Eric Schuler, a Top 15 performer at the Cross Country Championships who is within a couple of seconds of the school record. Freshmen Hassan Omar leads the 5,000 meters where he enters as the fourth seed and could be only the second Retriever to go under 14:50. The women’s 4x400 meter relay should battle with Albany for the Conference title with most likely Paulette Fogle, Kalane Abbey, D’Nique Phillip, and Kirsten Jones making up the team. The women’s DMR of Cody Mezebish, Essence Fredericks, Sarah Daly, and Angel Bucci will put the school record in Jeopardy. The men’s DMR of Jake Albino, Andrew Smith, Andrew Keresztes, and Noah Hutton should also battle for the Conference title. Aboshioma Obemeata comes in looking for his first Conference title after finishing a close second in both the indoor and outdoor editions last year, while setting personal bests in the triple jump the past two meets. Mo Drammeh will be in contention to score for the third year in a row and garner his third IC4A qualification in the high jump. In the long jump, Ebonique Jones could score, break the school record, and qualify for the ECAC championships in single jump. Not to mention her scoring abilities in the 60 and 200 meter dashes. A deep throws squad will head into the circle this weekend. The reigning Field Performer of the Year Amanda Deller will look to defend both her shot put and weight throw titles. The men’s team could potentially score four athletes in the weight led by Yao Adantor, Thor Serafenas, and Cam McDearmon, all three of which are ranked in the Top Ten in both the weight and the shot. After transferring to UMBC last year from Florida International University, Long struggled with some injuries that prevented him from competing much of the year. This year he has come back with renewed vigor, quickly moving up the All Time record book in the 60m dash (6.88) and 21.59 in the 200m, both #4 All Time. Currently he enters the America East Championships with fastest seeds in both dashes and will be looking for the double gold. After a solid cross country season that saw him run times fast enough to have been on the Conference team in any other year in UMBC history, Keresztes has really begun to make an impact during the track season. At one point this season he was ranked in the Top 20 in the Conference in the 800 meter, 1000 meter and Mile runs. In addition he has lent a leg on the IC4A qualifying 4x800 meter and Distance Medley Relays. Kereztes enters the America East Championship as the fifth seed in the 1,000 meters and will see action in the two relays as well.

Sophomore Paulette Fogle entered the year as the school record holder in the 400 meter hurdles and was determined to make a larger impact in the 500 meters at the Conference meet. She has not disappointed thus far having lowered her personal best time to 1:14.71, fast enough for third in school history and to enter the America East Championships as the number one seed. Additionally she has played an integral part on the women’s 4x400 meter relay filling the lead off leg on the School Record relay that lowered it by two seconds in their last outing to 3:46.97, almost as fast as the outdoor school record.
