Welcoming Dr. Robert Nye, fifth president of FLCCDozens of FLCC employees stood in line July 5 to meet their new president, Dr. Robert Nye, who was hosting a coffee reception on his first day on the job. He spent the morning shaking hands, learning names and listening to ideas.

In the weeks since, he has expanded his introduction to the greater community, meeting one-on-one and in small groups with College constituents, community organizations and business leaders.

Nye is the fifth president of FLCC, succeeding Barbara Risser. His appointment was announced at the SUNY Board of Trustees meeting on May 4.

Nye was vice president for academic affairs at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology in Lancaster, Pa., and previously served as deputy provost of the United States Army War College in Carlisle, Pa. He is a retired Army colonel who earned a doctorate in public administration from the University of Kansas.

“As trustees, we were impressed by Dr. Nye’s candor, compelling personal story, his academic accomplishment and his distinguished military service,” said Donna Mihalik, chair of the FLCC Board of Trustees.

In addition to his academic experience, Nye served in the U.S. Army for 30 years. His assignments included deployments to Afghanistan, Iraq and Kosovo, and from July 2010 to September 2011 he served as chief strategist for the deputy commanding general of U.S. forces in Iraq.

Nye’s teaching and administrative experience began with teaching ROTC from 1992-95 as an assistant professor of military science at Cornell University. In 2009, he was selected as the deputy dean — and in 2012 — the deputy provost at the Army War College; upon retirement as a colonel in 2013, he assumed his position at Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.

President’s tenure marked with celebrationThe retirement celebration for President Barbara Risser on June 23 served a dual purpose as a fundraiser for the Barbara G. Risser Completion Scholarship launched in her honor this year. Well-wishers surprised her with the unveiling of Risser Riesling, bottled by viticulture students in the spring semester, a redbud tree planted in front of the president’s office and a solar-powered water fountain that just went up in the Serenity Garden at the main campus.

The tree is a gift from the Student Corporation. It was selected because its flowers are purple, the symbolic color of the Alzheimer’s Association, a cause dear to the Risser family.

Nikkohl Luehm ’11, who designed the Serenity Garden as a student project, included the concept of a solar fountain in her plans, but there was no such product on the market at the time.“The solar fountain was truly visionary, and we had to wait for the technology to be invented to propel the water to the appropriate height,” said Joseph Nairn, chief advancement officer. “Luckily, we got it in just under the wire. The rippling water relates to an individual’s life and career path as well as the concept of renewal. How appropriate that the completion of the fountain will begin the next phase of Barb’s life and that of the College.”

There are a limited number of bottles of Risser Riesling still available. If you would like to purchase a bottle, call (585) 785-1421.

Scholarships funded by employee polar plungeOn Feb. 22, during a professional development day for employees, five FLCC employees raised $7,290 for student scholarships by jumping into an inflatable swimming pool set up in front of the main campus.

The amount was a welcome surprise to participants in the college’s first ever polar plunge, as their fundraising goal was just $5,000. Each sought donations from colleagues, family

and friends in the weeks leading up the event. A total of 96 donors contributed to five scholarships. The tally included an 11th-hour donation of $1,000 toward the Ed and Gerry Cuony Endowed Scholarship for which Ryan McCabe, FLCC’s director of online learning, took the dip to bring his total to $3,140 with 25 donors.

Eileen “Izy” Grooms, assistant professor of biology, raised $2,130 from 44 donors for the new IDEA scholarship created for a female student in a STEM program. Bryan Ingham, professor of mathematics, raised $975 from 28 donors for the Dr. Thomas Topping Scholarship for adult students.

“It was great to see such a large turn out to watch plunge,” said Ingham, who wore swim trunks and a Hawaiian shirt and, before taking the plunge tested the water by poking a finger through a thin layer of ice that had formed. “The financial support we received from co-workers, family, and friends was awe inspiring. The plunge itself was exhilarating – everyone should try it at least once.”

Other plungers included Brandon Lawson ‘06, a campus safety officer who raised $590 from 17 donors. Lawson bolstered FLCC English Prof. Trista Merrill’s Found Word Scholarship.

And, 22 donors gave a total of $555 to support Jacob Amidon, FLCC’s associate vice president of academic initiatives. Amidon’s donations went to the Sharon Nedrow Award for students transitioning from high school equivalency to FLCC degree programs.

“Generally speaking, the funds raised are the equivalent of seven scholarships for students in the next year,” said Amy Pauley, executive director of the FLCC Foundation

Celebrating GenerosityGeneva resident Nozomi Hirayama Williams and retiring President Barbara Risser were honored by the FLCC Foundation for their support of the college during a ceremony in May.

Williams was given the Benefactor Award for philanthropic efforts at FLCC over several decades. Her early gifts to the FLCC Foundation supported the needs of the college shortly after its founding in the late 1960s. Her contributions to the massage therapy program date back to the program’s inception in 2001 and have funded program enhancements, capital improvements, equipment purchases and professional development for the massage therapy faculty.

Williams has also supported the development and maintenance for the Canandaigua campus Serenity Garden, dedicated on September 9, 2011, as part of FLCC programming to commemorate the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks.

Williams is the widow of former Finger Lakes Times publisher and owner Samuel Burbank Williams II, founded the Williams Family Foundation in honor of her husband and their two deceased sons. Born in Japan, she met her future husband in Tokyo in 1964. They married in Mito, Japan, in 1965, and returned to his hometown of Geneva.

Risser was honored with the Foundation Award for her service to the college. She has presided over the largest expansion of college facilities since the main campus was built in the mid-1970s.

Since 2007, FLCC has expanded and modernized its main campus in Canandaigua, a project that included a new Student Center building with a state-of-the-art auditorium that has become the home of the Canandaigua LakeMusic Festival and the George M. Ewing Canandaigua Forum. The college has added a Victor Campus Center and recently opened the new Geneva Campus Center. The college also accepted the donation of the East Hill Campus in Naples, a conservation field station adjacent to the High-Tor State Wildlife Management Area, and opened the FLCC Viticulture and Wine Center in Geneva.

New programs include culinary arts, the viticulture and wine technology program—the only two-year degree of its kind in the Northeast—and instrumentation and control technologies, which serves the growing advanced manufacturing industry.

Young Alumni Spotlight Paige Vinson ’14, winemaker at Rooster Hill VineyardsFrom Honeoye, I grew up in the Finger Lakes region. After high school I attended Alfred University as an art major and ended up graduating in 2010 with a bachelors’ degree in fine art and philosophy with minors in anthropology and religious studies. I truthfully didn’t have much idea what I wanted to do, but I loved school and learning very much and knew that I’d like to go back.

I worked for a few years for my father’s company where I helped to manage and train delivery drivers. It was a tough job and I learned a lot about managing and decision making, and probably most importantly, working and holding my own in a male-dominated industry.

I started to look for graduate programs and couldn’t find anything I was interested in. I started looking at FLCC because it was close to home and affordable, and I really wanted a skill set that would allow me to work in a hands on industry. At the time I had been brewing beer at home and had spent some time working on a few farms. When I read about the viticulture and wine technology program at FLCC, I was instantly intrigued. I love the Finger Lakes and knew on some level that I wanted to end up here; this was home, and I knew the wine industry was booming.

I started the program at FLCC in 2012 with the intention of focusing on viticulture. I quit working for my father and got jobs at both the New York Wine and Culinary Center in Canandaigua and at Ravines Wine Cellars in the vineyard, cellar and tasting room. For me, working in both of those establishments complemented the education I was getting through the FLCC program. The FLCC program gave me a broad range of experiences from lab work and chemistry to cellar practices to pruning vines, and in a relatively short period of time.

By the time I graduated in 2014 I decided to travel for a while to see winemaking in other regions. I first went to the Willamette Valley in Oregon to focus on Pinot noir, Chardonnay and some sparkling wine production. After Oregon I traveled to Australia to do a sparkling wine harvest in the Victoria region, and then went to New Zealand to work in the Waipara region. I tried to focus on regions that were making wines that would translate to the Finger Lakes, as well as types of wine that are my favorite to drink: Riesling and other aromatics, Pinot noir and sparkling. After New Zealand, I came back to the Finger Lakes and worked an outstanding, Riesling-focused harvest at Red Newt Wine Cellars in Hector. All of the different harvests I did in different areas were crash courses in their own right — every cellar has a different operation and I think it’s a great skill set to be able to switch roles and work with different kinds of equipment, techniques and challenges. Shortly after that harvest I was hired as the winemaker at Rooster Hill Vineyards on Keuka Lake. It’s been an awesome learning opportunity and an incredible fusion of creativity and science. At Rooster Hill we source the majority of our wines from our own vineyards, and I am still afforded the opportunity to work in the vineyards too. Having the ability to work in both the winemaking and the viticulture fields was ultimately my goal, and I couldn’t be happier with the way it has worked out.

Vintners and Valentines, a love of wine and foodThe first ever Vintners and Valentines event was held at the FLCC main campus Student Center on Feb. 12. The dinner featured a knowledgeable host at each table to discuss the gourmet food and wine pairings.

This winemaker’s dinner highlighted Finger Lakes wines and the people who make them, a five-course meal prepared by the college’s culinary arts students, dancing and a silent auction.

Vintners and Valentines is a fundraiser to support the purchase of equipment for the FLCC viticulture and wine technology degree program. Proceeds from the event will go directly to the college’s viticulture and wine technology degree program, the only two-year program in the Northeast. Following state Education Department approval in 2009, the first students graduated in 2011. Program alumni are now among the winemaking staff of several local wineries and working in marketing or related industry roles. The inaugural Vintners and Valentines event will support the purchase of a bottling machine that can apply corks and caps.

“Finger Lakes residents should be proud of the incredible work local winemakers are doing to raise the profile of the region. This dinner marries that fine work with FLCC’s effort to prepare the next generation of winemakers,” said Joseph T. Nairn, FLCC’s chief advancement officer. “And what a great new way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.”

The second Vintners and Valentines is planned for Feb. 10, 2017.

Alumnus returns to FLCC for exhibit of watercolorsKevin Murphy ’74 got his start taking drawing and painting classes in downtown Canandaigua storefront classrooms before the then-Community College of the Finger Lakes had a permanent campus.

The accomplished artist and retired senior exhibit designer at The Strong National Museum of Play returned to his alma mater for an exhibit of his works in the art gallery named after two of his former professors, Wayne Williams and Thomas Insalaco.

The exhibit, “The Work of Kevin Murphy,” was featured in Williams-Insalaco Gallery 34 at the main campus from Feb. 4 to March 11.

Murphy’s preferred medium is one he taught himself, watercolor. His favorite subjects— ships, the sea and history—may be inspired by his childhood.

“I was encouraged by my parents in art from an early age, and inspired to travel by my adventurous father, a World War II royal naval officer, and both parents, who met and fell in love on the Queen of Bermuda in 1950,” he said.

After graduating from the then-CCFL, he earned a bachelor’s degree in fine art from SUNY Oswego, where he also took courses in history and museum studies. In 2011 he retired from a 30-year career at The Strong in Rochester, where he met his wife, Lorena, who worked in the museum’s education department. The pair recently built their home on the hills above Canandaigua Lake, and enjoy traveling in retirement.

Murphy started working in watercolors in the mid-1980s, and has seldom shared his work. “For me, I paint simply for the pleasure of painting, the joy of ‘returning’ to favorite places

and times, and to relax in my studio,” he explained, adding that his wife has encouraged him to present his work from time to time. “It is a great honor to be able to display some of my work in this gallery, named after beloved professors, and in the college to which I owe so much. If not for the benefits that a good education provided, I would not have enjoyed the remarkable opportunities that an education opened up to me.”

Murphy received the FLCC Alumni Association’s Outstanding Art Alumni Achievement Award in May 2015.

Florence Muller (pictured above) on July 25, 2016. In 1999, Florence donated 40 acres of land including her former residence, Wild Rose Chalet, to the FLCC Foundation. Today the property is known as the Muller Field Station and is used extensively by the conservation department and others.

Over the last 17 years, Florence supported the operating costs associated with running the field station and provided grants through her family foundation for special projects. These have included upgrading the waterfront area, funding a position for K-12 outreach, creating the fish hatchery building, and transforming the exterior of the building. In recent years, Florence created a charitable lead trust with the FLCC Foundation and the Muller Field Station as the lead beneficiary. Because of her generosity, the FLCC Foundation is in the process of a complete renovation of the interior of the chalet.
