Kicking Off aNew Year!

The Snead State Alumni Association was busy during the fall semester!

The semester began for the Alumni Associa-tion with an appreciation luncheon for all Snead employees. The luncheon shows the faculty and staff how much we appreciate their support of students and the Alumni Association.

To kick off the semester for students, the Association hosted the annual Parson Tailgate. The tailgate is for current Snead students as an opportunity to learn more about the Alumni Association. Sponsors contributed food and door prizes for the event, and a DJ from WQSB played music and announced winners during the event.

To help increase awareness for the Alumni Association, we manned at booth at the Boaz Harvest Festival. We provided information on joining the Alumni Association and on purchasing a paver in the Alumni Walk. We also had Alumni Association T-shirts for sale with the proceeds benefiting the Association.

The Snead State Presidential Scholars were our special guests for the Alumni Mixer in No-vember held at Papa Dubi’s in Guntersville. The event was an excellent opportunity to showcase the achievements of our students while we en-joyed great food and great fellowship.

Bruce Sanford of Boaz (pictured at left, center) was surrounded by his family as he accepted the award for REALTOR of the Year by the Alabama Association of Realtors in October.

Congratulations to our Alumni!

Bill Jones (pictured at right) will be inducted into the Ala-bama Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, April 28.

Mr. Jones served as the Jacksonville State men’s basketball head coach and student-athlete. He was inducted into JSU’s Athletic Hall of Fame in 1991.

Born September 5, 1944 in Guntersville, Ala., Mr. Jones played collegiately at Snead State before joining Jacksonville State’s basketball squad in 1964. At JSU, he led the Gamecocks in scoring in each of his two seasons. His senior year he led in free throw shooting at 84.7 percent and was named to the Ala-bama College Conference All-Conference Team.

To this day, he is the only JSU men’s basketball player to have his number retired. His No. 12 hangs from the rafters of Pete Mathews Coliseum.

He began his head coaching career at Florence State, now the University of North Alabama, in 1972. After two years, he became the head coach at Jacksonville State and began a string of 11 seasons with at least 20 wins.

During his 24-season tenure, Jones was named as named the 1985 Kodak National Coach of the Year and received Gulf South Conference Coach of the Year honors three times. His highest honor came when his 1985 Gamecocks captured the NCAA Divi-sion II National Championship.

Upon retirement following the 1997-1998 seasons, his career record at JSU stood at 449-196, making him the winningest basketball coach in school history. Along with being inducted into the JSU Athletic Hall of Fame, he is also a member of the Amateur Softball Hall of Fame and was a charter member of the Marshall County Sports Hall of Fame.

Help us honor our veterans and active militaryAs part of Alumni Homecoming 2018, the Alumni Asso-

ciation would like to salute Snead State alumni who are veterans or who are active military personnel.

We are searching for photos of anyone in our Snead family who is serving or has served our country to be sent to the Alumni Office. We would like to feature the photos in a special slideshow that will be displayed during Alumni Homecoming.

You can mail or email the photos along with the per-son’s name and branch of military. You may include years of service if you wish, but that information is optional.

Mail the photo and information to the Alumni Associa-

tion, P.O. Box 734, Boaz, AL 35957, or email the photo and information to [email protected].

Mailed photos will be returned. Please make sure to include a current mailing address with the photo, so we know where to return the photo. Photos will be returned after Alumni Homecoming on Friday, May 4.

People do not have to attend Alumni Homecoming to be featured in the slideshow, but we would like our vet-erans and military personnel to be our special guests for Alumni Homecoming if it’s possible for them to attend. More information is available on Page 7 of the newsletter.
