The Graphic Imperative:International Posters for Peace, Social Justice and the Environment

Every day, people pass posters that advertise an event, a product or service. But, when does a poster stop being a poster and become an important expression of design? Maybe when it has something important to say.

The Graphic Imperative, a traveling retrospective of international post-ers from 1965 to 2005, will be at Ohio Northern University until April 30. The 121 posters were selected based on a variety of factors: the ability of the designer or artist to convey a complex conceptual mes-sage in a direct manner, the innovative use of imagery, subject matter of enduring (rather than merely transitory) interest and, above all, work that embodies and reaffirms the usefulness of the protest poster as a medium for social organization and change. The posters address a myriad of topics, including the Vietnam War, AIDS, apartheid, literacy and the environment.

Admission to both the Elzay and Stambaugh Studio Theatre galleries is free and open to the public, daily from noon to 5 p.m. The Stambaugh Studio Theatre Gallery is also open prior to Freed Center events. Dear alumni, parents and friends: It is hard to believe that another school year once more draws to a close. As I reflect on the many campus activities and the accomplishments of our students and faculty, I am also mindful that right now we are faced with a particularly difficult set of challenges due to the impact of the economic downturn. As I have visited with alumni and met on campus with faculty, staff, students and their families, everyone asks – what’s happening at Ohio Northern University? While it has been a very successful year at Ohio Northern, and we have much to be proud of, we are also extremely cognizant of the fact that the economic recession has profoundly affected us all. Like the majority of colleges and universities in the nation and the world, ONU has been hit hard. We have some very real, pressing financial difficulties and know we must make tough decisions that will impact our entire University community, both now and in the future. We especially foresee challenges in the areas of enrollment, affordability for our students and their families, and the rising costs of day-to-day operating expenses. Despite the obstacles we face, we are, as always, firmly committed to ensuring the very best educational experience for our students. At the same time, we are aware that a very different financial environment will, for the time being, accompany our efforts to fulfill this commitment. With this in mind, our Board of Trustees unanimously approved one of the smallest tuition increases in the history of the University (3.5 percent for undergraduates and 4.8 percent for law students). It also approved a modest 5 percent increase in room and board to cover our continually rising expenses. This is not the first time in its history that Ohio Northern has faced difficulties and chosen to move forward to overcome them. As we launched our Campaign for Ohio Northern University’s Tomorrow in early November, many asked us why we would go forward, trying to raise money in the face of the economic turmoil around us. My answer then, as it is now, is that it is in our nature to move forward. We will move forward, because we believe in this institution and its future. Toby and I wish you a wonderful spring and invite you to come home to Ohio Northern! Spend the night at our beautiful new Inn, attend a play or music or athletic event and see for yourself all that is happening here that makes us so proud and that gives us the motivation and conviction to move forward.

Polar Bear Nation: Under the Northern Lights … He’s More than a Mascot

Dr. Steven C. Amstrup, wildlife biologist and world-renowned polar bear researcher, kicked off ONU’s yearlong awareness campaign, which has been dubbed “Polar Bear Nation: Under the Northern Lights ... He’s More than a Mascot.” Amstrup spoke on “Polar Bear – Climate Change Sentinel” at a public lecture on Oct. 15, drawing more than 350 listeners from the ONU campus, surrounding universities and the community. ONU is one of only four universities in the nation with the polar bear as a mascot. The ONU community has put together a yearlong series of events to draw attention and to raise awareness of the threats to polar bears due to climate change. More than 500 people came to the Freed Center on Oct. 28 to hear Dr. Marc Bekoff,

On Feb. 21, Polar Bear Day at the Freed Center attracted nearly 100 children and young adults for a variety of creative activities that focused on global climate change’s impact on the endangerment of the polar bear. That evening in the Freed Center, the ONU symphony orchestra presented the world premier of composer Joseph Curiale’s “Silent Snow,” which was specially commissioned for Polar Bear Nation. Elizabeth Kolbert, respected journalist, writer for The New Yorker and author of Field Notes from a Catastrophe: Man, Nature and Climate Change, spoke March 13 after campus, community and alumni took part in reading and discussing her book. Polar Bear Nation events continue this spring with National Geographic photographer Joel Satore on April 8 and “Recreate, Replace, Restore: Exploring the Intersections between Meanings and Environments,” an international conference sponsored by the Working Group for Religion, Ethics and Nature (WGREN), on April 17-19. professor emeritus of ecology and evolutionary biology at the University of Colorado, Boulder, present the Keiser Lecture. His topic was “Animal Passions, Beastly Virtues and Wild Justice: Reflections on Redecorating Nature.” Named in honor of professor Terry D. Keiser, BSED ’64, ACIT ’98, the Keiser Distinguished Lectureship in Life Sciences brings nationally prominent life sciences scholars to ONU’s campus each year to lecture and interact with students. The Keiser Lectureship is the first program of its kind at Ohio Northern. “This lectureship provides ONU students the opportunity to meet and discuss with prominent scholars and to examine scientific research as it relates to ongoing issues that are

critical to the ONU experience,” says Dr. Anne Lippert, vice president for academic affairs. Next on the list of activities was the Polar Bear Ball, held Jan. 24 at the Columbus Zoo, where more than 350 students, faculty, staff and

alumni enjoyed an evening of dancing and fellowship. The zoo brought baby animals to visit with guests, and a silent auction raised over $1,500 for Polar Bears International.

the University and village and called the new facility “an immeasurable benefit to the Village of Ada.” Bob Smith, BSBA ’75, chair of ONU’s Board of Trustees, said “The Inn fills a need for the families of ONU students.” Tallene Eichelberger, general manager of The Inn, pledged that the facility will emphasize service to the University and the community, adding that she and her staff “pledge to be the best we can be.” Located adjacent to the Freed Center for the Performing Arts, the hotel features 70 deluxe guestrooms with one king- or two queen-sized beds. Suites are also available for guests. Specialty rooms have fireplaces and cathedral ceilings and overlook the garden courtyard fountain. Every room is furnished with flat-panel televisions and luxurious bedding and linens, as well as refrigerators, microwaves and high-speed Internet access. In addition, the facility has more than 3,000 square feet of flexible meeting space, including a 14-seat executive boardroom. An exercise facility, with the latest fitness equipment, an upscale restaurant and a pub are also part of the hotel. Representatives of Charles Construction Services Inc., general contractor of The Inn, and the architectural firm of Miller Lecky were on hand along with members of ONU’s Board of Trustees, faculty, staff and students. Within days of opening, The Inn was the setting for an Ohio Department of Development (ODOD) Advanced Energy “Road Trip” event hosted by the T.J. Happenings ‘Sometimes You Eat the Bear…’ Joseph Lisle Williams, BA ’66, president of Jordan Marketing Associates, brought his presentation on resilience, “Some Days You Eat the Bear ... Some Days, the Bear Eats You,” to the Freed Center for the Performing Arts on Jan. 21. Williams was mauled by a bear at age 20 and survived. This encounter inspired “Some Days You Eat the Bear …,” an engaging, humorous and practical approach for understanding and developing resilience while handling daily challenges, stressful situations and major crises. Williams talked about identifying opportunities to develop personal resilience. Prior to becoming president of Jordan Marketing Associates, a food brokerage firm based in St. Louis, Williams held senior management positions with Banquet Foods and Golden Valley Microwave Foods. He currently resides in Chesterfield, Mo.

The Inn at Ohio Northern UniversityAt Your Service!

The Inn at Ohio Northern University officially opened to the public with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Friday, Oct. 10. Dr. Kendall L. Baker, president of Ohio Northern, said, “This is a momentous occasion for ONU and Ada. The Inn adds a new dimension to the village and ONU. Not only does it accommodate a major need in Ada, but it will enable the University to offer programming and opportunities that have not been possible before.” Ada Mayor David Retterer, who is also associate professor of mathematics and computer science at ONU, praised the cooperation between

demonstration on Mexican culture and the dances of Mexico. This performance will be presented on campus and tour area schools. “The performance will show, through a voyage to the past, how the dances in Mexico have evolved,” Guerra-Hernandez says. “Particularly, we will be able to see how the dances called Sones Jarochos in the state of Veracruz have been influenced by the culture and traditions of the African and Spanish cultures.” His goals are to develop a better understanding of the two cultures, expand his students’ cultural horizons and “enrich their views on life, culture and the world itself.” In addition to working with dance students, Guerra-Hernandez will speak with students in a variety of classes. “My biggest hope,” he says, “is that, in time, they will be able to understand that there is only one world we share every day, and our job is to make it better for future generations.”

Exercise Physiology Program Accredited Ohio Northern’s exercise physiology program is now accredited in exercise science by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). ONU’s accreditation followed two on-site visits, review of the program’s materials and facilities, and interviews with students and faculty. “This represents an outside validation of our program,” said Dr. Scott Swanson, associate professor of exercise physiology and coordinator of the program. “It means the exercise physiology program meets certain standards in terms of administration, resources, faculty and facilities. To our students, it means they will have all the necessary knowledge, skills and assessments vital to their professional development.” Dr. Lisa G. Robeson, interim dean of the College of Arts & Sciences, said, “Because there

are so few accredited exercise science programs in the United States, ONU has a chance to become a national leader in an area of high enrollment growth.” Nationally, ONU’s program is one of just 14 undergraduate programs in exercise science to receive accreditation by CAAHEP, the largest accrediting organization for programs in the health sciences field. In collaboration with its committees on accreditation, CAAHEP reviews and accredits over 2,000 educational programs in 20 health science occupations.

Law Graduates Have Success in Ohio Bar Exam

Students who graduated from the Ohio Northern University Pettit College of Law in May 2008 had a 93.3 percent passage rate on the Ohio bar examination administered this past July. This follows the 100 percent success rate of ONU graduates who sat for the bar examination for the first time in February. The previous year, graduates of the College of Law recorded the highest percentage of first-time applicants passing the July 2007 bar, with 96 percent of first-time takers passing the exam. Of the 1,206 applications who sat for the July 2008 Ohio Bar Examination, 1,016 applicants, or 84.3 percent, received passing scores. For the 1,093 first-time applicants, 88.8 percent received passing scores.

David C. Crago, dean and professor of law at Ohio Northern, celebrated the continued success of recent graduates. “This accomplishment reflects the hard work of the entire college, but, most of all, the efforts of these students.” The new attorneys were sworn in during a special public session of the Supreme Court on Nov. 17 at the Ohio Theatre in Columbus.

ONU Students Discuss Current Events The U.S. presidential election was not the only subject on the minds of ONU students last fall. On Oct. 1, “The Recent Crises Between Georgia and Russia” was the focus of a panel discussion hosted by Ohio Northern University’s Phi Beta Delta International Forum. Panelists included ONU law professors Howard N. Fenton and Bryan H. Ward, political scientist Andrew Ludanyi, geographer David R. Smith, and Eliso Chabrava, a student in ONU’s LLM program who received her law degree from the Ivane Javakhishvili State University in Tbilisi, Georgia. She has been active in the Georgian Young Lawyers Association and other law reform groups in Georgia. Phi Beta Delta Coordinator Michael Loughlin was moderator. The panel explored the geographic, ethnic and political diversity of this complex area, specific regional issues, and some of the geopolitical ramifications involved in the recent confrontation. On Oct. 29, Dr. Kofi Nsia-Pepra, visiting assistant professor of political science, made a presentation titled “Responsibility to Protect: Why were Darfurians Denied Protection.” The presentation was part of the annual Phi Beta Delta International Forum. Nsia-Pepra said governments that endorse “sovereignty as responsibility” have an obligation to protect the suffering, as with the case of Darfur civilians under the oppressive rule of the Sudan government. He presented an overview of the Darfur crisis and explored why the strongest

advocates of “responsibility to protect” – NATO, the EU, the African Union and other states like China – failed to intervene to save Darfurians. Nsia-Pepra suggested that politics within the UN Security Council led to this tragedy and that the entire situation has been fueled by strategic national interests.

Students Get Close-up Look at Presidential Election

The 2008 presidential election made history, and Ohio Northern students were in the thick of it. Sixteen ONU students and a faculty member, Dr. Robert Alexander, BA ’94, attended the Democratic and Republican National Conventions and followed up with on-campus discussions and study. The Republican convention program was attended by Michael Hamper, Jefferson, Ohio; Andrew Lammers, Tipp City, Ohio; and Miranda Wade of Marion, Ohio. Attending the Democratic convention program were Matthew Allen, Chicora, Pa.; Justin Dickerson, Hamilton, Ohio; Victoria Dickman, Middle Point, Ohio; Denise Jansen, North Royalton, Ohio; Jacob Jeffire, Clinton Township, Mich.; Samantha Kinstle, Wapakoneta, Ohio; Kelly Morman, Monroeville, Ohio; Atlantis Richter, Franklin, Ind., Patti Stiger, Bradner, Ohio; and Matthew Wiseman, Findlay, Ohio. The students were part of a two-week seminar coordinated through The Washington Center, a nonpartisan, educational organization. Arriving a week before the conventions, the students were part of small-group discussions, workshops and issues forums. During the conventions, they had the opportunity to pursue convention-related assignments and fieldwork. While at the conventions, the students shared their experiences through web journals and followed up with a panel presentation on the ONU campus. Alexander said, “This is really an excellent opportunity for these students to witness history.


They will be right in the mix of this exciting election, which has significant import to the future direction of the country.” They were not the only ONU students learning from the 2008 elections. Political science students in Dr. Jo Ann Scott’s class, Measuring Public Opinion, conducted a pre-election survey of voters.

ONU Acknowledged for Excellence Because learning is an individual accomplishment, judging the quality of educational programs can be difficult. So, numerous publications and organizations find ways to rate colleges and universities every year based on criteria their readers find important. Many of these ratings place Ohio Northern University at or near the top of their lists. U.S. News & World Report ranks ONU as No. 2 among Midwest baccalaureate colleges in America’s Best Colleges 2009. The ratings are based on 15 indicators of academic excellence. U.S. News & World Report also ranks ONU’s T.J. Smull College of Engineering as one of the top 50 undergraduate engineering schools in the nation. The Princeton Review’s The Best 368 Colleges 2009 Edition includes ONU as one of the nation’s top schools. The rating is based on a survey of 120,000 students at the 368 colleges in the book. The 2008-09 Colleges of Distinction guide highlights ONU as one of 14 schools from Ohio. This listing focuses on engaged students, great teaching, vibrant communities and successful outcomes. Creative Colleges: A Guide for Student Actors, Artists, Dancers, Musicians and Writers lists ONU’s department of music and the department of art and design among the top 200 creative programs nationwide. The publication is aimed at college-bound creative students, offering them the information and resources necessary for selecting the right programs.

Prospective students are responding to these indicators of the University’s excellence. Last fall, Ohio Northern had a record enrollment of 3,721 students, compared to 3,603 the previous year. ONU eclipsed the 3,700 mark for the first time in school history and marked the ninth record-breaking year out of the last 10. “We are excited to see students continue to choose ONU as a place to further their education,” said Karen (Casper) Condeni, BA ’74, dean of enrollment. “It shows that ONU is meeting the needs of students while offering what they are looking for in a university.” The number of new undergraduate students was 897, compared to 842 the previous year. The new class was the most diverse class yet enrolled. The student body experienced a 35 percent increase in international students, and diverse enrollment was up 22 percent.

The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration Adopts Student Honor Code

On Oct. 21, 2008, Ohio Supreme Court Justice Robert Cupp, BA ’73, JD ’76, presided over a swearing-in ceremony in which all freshmen in The James F. Dicke College of Business Administration committed to a student honor code. The honor code was formulated by a committee of business professors and students and formally approved by the business faculty. The code details how that college is committed to developing global leaders with the values of integrity, leadership, teamwork, continuous improvement and community service. “I highly commend the students and faculty for establishing this honor code,” Cupp said. “I

am confident the students will adhere to these high ideals and standards, and it will benefit them as they make their way through school and in pursuing a career.” Commenting on the code, Dean James F. Fenton added, “The College of Business Administration, as a part of the academic community at Ohio Northern University, is values based and commits itself to developing graduates who are respectful, responsible, truthful and committed to doing what is right with respect to people and society. The honor code we have developed and approved reinforces the fact that we are a values-based institution of higher education.”

Pharmacy to Develop Computer Software in Partnership with Apotex Corporation Pharmacy students across the country will benefit from a new community pharmacy stimulation software package being developed through a partnership between Apotex Corporation and ONU’s Raabe College of Pharmacy. The software will allow students to experience managing a retail pharmacy’s operations as they prepare for retail pharmacy careers. Jim Reiselman, professor of pharmacy practice, has conducted initial analyses and will spearhead the project. Dr. Jon Sprague, dean of the College of Pharmacy, said, “The college is very appreciative of the partnership opportunity Apotex is providing us to deliver a very important learning tool to help prepare students for their service to the pharmacy profession.” To fund the project, Apotex has donated $75,000 to the College of Pharmacy’s Pharmacy Skills Enrichment Fund. Apotex Corp. President Tammy Keeney McIntire, BSPh ’88, said, “We are extremely pleased to be partnering with ONU to develop what promises to be a very effective tool for pharmacy schools and students. Since its inception, Apotex has been a committed supporter of community pharmacy. So, we are naturally thrilled to support an initiative that will help turn today’s pharmacy students into tomorrow’s retail pharmacy professionals.”

Fifteen Years of Dance

To celebrate the 15th anniversary of the dance program at Ohio Northern University, dance alumni collaborated with current students in a performance paying homage to the program and revisiting favorite performances on Oct. 11 and 12. Returning alumni shared their expertise as teachers, dancers and choreographers. Choreographers included Geraldo “Wally” Calderon, BFA ’00, Matthew Simpkins, BFA ’03, Janet Schroeder, BFA ’00, and Marisa (Carbrera) Knight, BA ’03. Allison Baird, BSBA ’04, and Schroeder joined students in the performances, while Brenda Hoyt-Brackman, lecturer in communication arts, and Laurie Bell, associate professor of dance, assisted with choreography for ballroom, modern, tap, jazz and musical theatre numbers.

‘Cabaret’ Heats Up the Stage The Tony Award-winning musical Cabaret warmed up the Stambaugh Studio Theatre stage in February. Set in Berlin in 1929, Cabaret follows the tumultuous love story of Kit Kat Klub performer Sally Bowles and American writer Cliff Bradshaw while providing serious commentary on the state of affairs in Germany at the close of the 1920s as the Nazis came to power. Exciting dance numbers, powerful performances and songs like “It Couldn’t Please Me More,” “Willkommen,” “Cabaret,” “Don’t Tell Mama” and “Two Ladies,” accompanied by the Klub’s band, contributed to an exciting evening and a superb production.

Nursing Program Accredited

Ohio Northern’s baccalaureate degree program in nursing (BSN) has received accreditation from the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). To receive this distinction, the ONU program met four accreditation standards. The standards include three program quality areas: mission and governance; institutional commitment and resources; and curriculum and teaching learning practices. The fourth is a measure of program effectiveness in student performance and faculty accomplishments. Marjorie G. Walker, EdD, RN, director of the nursing program, said, “I am delighted to announce the accreditation. Accreditation is a voluntary process that serves the public interest by providing an impartial evaluation of the quality of the professional education program. In addition, national accreditation will allow our students access to other educational funding. I am proud of our program, students and faculty. They reflect the art and science of nursing practice.” Dr. Lisa G. Robeson, interim dean of the Getty College of Arts & Sciences said, “We’re excited to have our nursing program recognized by CCNE. More and more hospitals are asking for nurses with bachelor of nursing degrees, and ONU’s program will play a major role in furthering the College of Arts & Sciences’ mission of equipping students to flourish in a rapidly changing world while also serving our community and region.” ONU began accepting students into its BSN program in 2005. Today, 97 students are enrolled in the program with another 25 enrolled in the BSN completion program for practicing registered nurses with associate degrees. Alum Stars in Thought-provoking Drama Bryan Beckwit, BFA ’07, starred in the exploratory drama A.H. (before he changed our history), a one-man play about the life of Adolf Hitler. The Freed Center for the Performing Arts presented the drama on Jan. 17 with a pre-show discussion. The play deals with the complex question of how Adolf, a sensitive child who dreamt of becoming an artist, became Hitler, one of history’s most monstrous figures. The play combines animation, virtuosi acting, classical music, physical acting and other theatrical elements. Playwright Yagil Eliraz is the grandson of two Holocaust survivors. The Israel native spent eight years researching and writing A.H., which was recently nominated for the best Fringe Theatre Show 2008 (Tel Aviv).

Broadway Virtuoso Hosts Master Class

Tony Award-winning actress Victoria Clark presented a master class for ONU theatre, musical theatre and music students on Oct. 4. Clark received a 2005 Tony for “Best Leading Actress in a Musical” for her performance as domineering mother Margaret Johnson in The Light in the Piazza. She garnered rave reviews for her virtuoso performance, including a 2005 Drama Desk Award and Outer Critics Circle Award. In addition to stage and film work, Clark is a graduate of Yale University and an accomplished director, vocal coach and solo artist.


Iron men and Women of onUendurance for the fun of it Start with a 2.4-mile swim. Continue with a 112-mile bike ride. And then top it off with a 26.2-mile run. This is not exactly everyone’s idea of a leisure-filled afternoon. Or weekend, for that matter. But most people are not Ironmen, a term used to describe athletes who have completed an Ironman triathlon, a widely recognized endurance event that combines a grueling combination of swimming, cycling and running. “Most people think you’re crazy when you say you want to do it,” says Rob Lydic, BS ’97, who completed Ironman Arizona in November 2008. Crazy or not, the events are immensely popular, with registration selling out a full year in advance of the race. “You’re paying an insane amount of money to torture yourself for up to 17 hours,” says Sarah Gilewicz, BSCE ’98, who completed Ironman Louisville in August 2008. “And yet, they sell out as fast as concerts. It seems ludicrous to people who don’t do them. But there’s a large group of crazy people out there, I guess.” Ohio Northern has graduated a number of these so-called “crazy people” who have gone on to compete Ironman competitions around the country. For some, it’s the culmination of a lifelong dream. Others see the Ironman as just another challenge, something that came up without much fanfare or premeditation. “It was a life goal,” Lydic says. “It is truly something that is to be celebrated for me and my family who supported me throughout this entire endeavor. It is great to be able to say that I’ve accomplished something that not many people have or even can.”

Although the Ironman is something that Lydic has contemplated all his life, he traces his renewed interest in the Ironman to a single moment. “I was sitting on an airplane,” he says, “and I bent over to pick up my luggage, and I realized that I was out of shape. I had just read a magazine on the challenges and the joys associated with the Ironman, and I said, ‘I’ve got to do one. I’ve got to get back in shape and do this.’” Norm Scarazzo, BSBA ’92, followed a similar urge to improve himself physically. “I decided three years ago that I wanted to try to get myself in better shape. It was the beginning of the year, after the holidays. I started lifting weights, and I did some running. I decided that I wanted to take the athletic stuff up to next level.” This next level happened to be triathlons, and after completing more than 40, he transitioned to the Ironman Louisville in August 2008. Gilewicz’s interest in the Ironman seems a bit more random than the others. “Close to two years ago,” she says, “I was watching the Ironman Championship on TV, and I just decided, ‘That’s it. I’m going to do the Ironman.” Tonya Hunter, BS ’02, JD ’05, also completed Ironman Louisville in August 2008. “I had completed various marathons, and I just wanted a new challenge,” she says. “I was interested in combining the three sports in an event that would really show endurance.” And so, for each of our athletes, an idea was born. With registration complete and the race a full year away, they began to train.

It takes a year Because it involves up to 12 months of arduous training and a staggering time commitment, preparing for an Ironman is not something to be taken lightly. Training takes many forms. Some athletes train alone. Some join community triathlon clubs. Scarazzo even hired a coach to help him prepare. “The most important thing that I did was get myself a coach,” Scarazzo says. “We talk a number of times during the week, and once a month he sends me a plan on what to do every night. It’s some kind of combination of a swim, a bike and a run put together, with weightlifting in between. And there’s a really strict nutrition plan that goes along with it, too.” For the most part, Hunter trained alone. “Most of the training was really an individual thing for me. I needed to be focused on my goal, so I spent a great deal of time training alone because I really didn’t have many friends who were interested in the endurance of training for an Ironman.” Alone or in groups, one thing is certain about training for an Ironman: there’s plenty of it. It takes time, dedication, tenacity, and an understanding family. Training for an event like this is almost like having a second job. “The hardest part of Ironman is the training for the Ironman,” Lydic explains. “In the training regiment I did, the average weekend consisted of a three-mile swim and a two-hour run on Saturday and then a six- to seven-hour bike ride and a three-mile swim on Sunday. Where to fit all this in and how to manage your family and job are very difficult.”

The hIsTory of The Ironman

The first Ironman race was staged in Hawaii in February 1978, the result of a local argument over which athletes were more fit: runners or swimmers. Fifteen people raced that day; 12 finished. Today, more than 50,000 athletes compete in 22 Ironman Triathlons around the world, many hoping to qualify to race in the Ironman World Championship in Kailua-Kona, Hawaii. This final Ironman race in Hawaii consists of three endurance events: a 2.4-mile swim in Kailua-Kona Bay, a 112-mile bike ride across the Hawaiian lava desert to Hawaii and back, and a 26.2-mile marathon along the coast of the Big Island. To obtain a spot in the Ironman World Championship race, contestants need to either win one of 200 lottery spots, or win a qualifying spot at one of 22 qualifying events held throughout the world. Top finishers in each age group earn coveted spots in the Championship.

“A difficult part is just the time commitment that you need to put in to get yourself in shape to actually compete in the race,” Scarazzo says. “You spend an entire year swimming, biking and running, and lifting weights and making sure you eat right, all leading up to that big race at the end of the year.” In preparing for her Ironman, Hunter created a schedule for working out and alternating between the three sports. During a typical week, she would swim on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, bike on Tuesday and Thursday, and run on Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. “Saturdays would have a bike ride of up to 100 miles, Sundays would have a run of up to 20 miles, and there would also be a long swim on either Saturday or Sunday, which would be up to three miles,” she says. Gilewicz trained 20 hours a week for 34 weeks. She estimates that she devoted somewhere in the range of 650 to 700 hours to prepare for the Ironman. “I trained for eight months,” she says. “I did upwards of 3,500 to 4,000 miles combined in the three disciplines. On average, I would do somewhere from six to 10 miles swimming, around 250 miles of biking and another 40 to 50 miles of running every week.” Gilewicz adds, “I was not training to win, or even to be super-competitive, but mostly to finish and finish without collapsing.”

The thrill and the agony The Ironman race is a three-headed monster of endurance, a grueling affair that intimidates the average person. It even elicits different anxieties from its participants. Some were apprehensive. Others had no trouble at all.

“Swimming was really the difficult part,” Lydic explains. “When that mass start happens, you have 3,000 people swimming at the same time. So, if you are slow, you will get swam over. You get punched; you get grabbed. It is a very frightening experience for a lot of people, but it’s also very exciting.” “The run was the hardest part of the race because it was 94 degrees outside,” Hunter says. “On the bike, you at least had the wind cooling you off. But after running three miles through an non-shaded area, I had to start walking because I could not get my body temperature to cool down. I was drinking fluids and using the sponges they provide you soaked with ice-cold water.” Even through all of this, Hunter was still able to admire the passing scenery. “I loved the bike ride!” she says. “Biking through the rolling hills in Kentucky was such a great challenge and provided such a great ride! It was truly amazing to just enjoy biking for seven hours through such beautiful countryside.” All four Northern Ironmen made an initial goal of simply finishing the race. After that, they each hoped to finish in less than 12 hours. But for everyone involved, there was a sense that simply crossing the finish line, and thereby earning the right to call themselves an “Ironman,” was enough.

Lydic finished Ironman Louisville in 13 hours, 26 minutes, 33 seconds. “I really had some troubles with cramps in the run,” Lydic says. “But I just told myself that I was going to accomplish the Ironman no matter what and that finishing was the goal. With the encouragement of my family, I made it.” “The best part was the end,” Hunter proudly exclaims, who finished at 14 hours, 24 minutes, 12 seconds. “I was mostly pleased that I finished such an endurance race, more than I was concerned with my time.” After all that training, the race itself becomes the easy part. Almost. “You put in all that time training, and then, all of sudden, race day comes,” Scarazzo says. “The biggest part for me was to finish. Once the race started to progress, I figured ‘OK, I’m going to be able to do this.’ So I concentrated on coming in under 12 hours, which, for your first Ironman, is an accomplishment.” With a finish time of 11 hours, 46 minutes, 41 seconds, Scarazzo finished 51st out 342 men in his age group and 256 out of 1975 overall. Gilewicz recalls the final moments of her Ironman experience. “The last couple of miles, when I knew I was going to finish, I realized that I was probably going to get my goal time. I knew that eight months of training was actually going to pay off. And you get to hear those words. Every person that crosses the finish line, they say, ‘Sarah Gilewicz, you are an Ironman.’ And I was just thinking about those words for so long. I could not stop smiling for the last half-hour of the race.” Gilewicz finished the Ironman in 11 hours, 58 minutes, 3 seconds, good for 39th place out of 512 women.

that sparked an interest in qualifying for the Ironman World Championships in Hawaii. “This last time in Louisville, I was mostly training to finish. But I was closer than I would have ever expected to qualify for the Championship,” she says. “So I think in the next two or three years, I’m going to train to really try to qualify to go to Hawaii.” Hunter hasn’t yet scheduled another Ironman. Although she initially planned on running just a single Ironman race in her lifetime, this opinion changed shortly after she crossed the finish line. “Once I completed it, I felt like I could do it again. And I realized how much fun I had training and working towards the goal.” Because of various family and work commitments, Lydic has long-term plans for his next Ironman. “I plan to do another in 10 or so years as my family will be a bit older, and the time it requires to train won’t hopefully be such an issue. Until then, I will continue in the sport of triathlon and do more sprints and half Ironmans this year.”

anyone can be an Ironman Each of our Northern Ironman led active lives while studying at ONU. Scarazzo played a year of football with the Polar Bears. Lydic ran cross country and track, and Gilewicz swam. Hunter was a regular fixture on the Green Monster. “During law school, I would typically run three to five miles each day,” Hunter says, “so the thoughts of a marathon started on the Green Monster, which then lead me to the Ironman and accomplishing that goal.” Although Scarazzo, Lydic, Hunter and Gilewicz are athletic individuals, they all say that there’s no stereotypical Ironman athlete. Anyone can do it. The Ironman is not as daunting as it appears. “Everyone makes it sound like it’s so impossible, but you see people out there that are 80 years old, that are 50 pounds overweight. If you’re willing to train for it, anyone can become an Ironman,” Gilewicz says. “It is totally worth it. It’s an amazing, amazing accomplishment.”

The race takes different tolls on different people. Recovery can take days or even weeks. Scarazzo’s recovery required about a month. “I was not a pretty picture after the race. It’s a big shock to your body when you do something like that,” he recalls. “The race was Aug. 31, 2008. So, for the whole month of September, I was still working out but just doing really light stuff. You’ve got to let your body heal itself.” Hunter had an easier go of it. “I was a little tired, and I had some trouble bending my legs because of all of the biking and running, but otherwise I felt great,” she says. “The next day I felt great and really didn’t have any aches and pains, but I decided to take a little time off after the Ironman just to give my body some relaxing time!” Gilewicz, made a quick recovery, too. “This is going to sound bad, but it took me 48 hours to recover. I was fine. The race was on a Sunday, and on Wednesday, I went out and did a five-mile jog and felt perfectly fine. I don’t know if that’s normal. I was stiff for two days. But, by the third day, I felt great.”

repeat performances So do Scarazzo, Gilewicz, Hunter or Lydic see any additional Ironman races in their futures? Opinions vary. Scarazzo has immediate plans to race the Ironman again, starting with Ironman Arizona on Aug. 30, 2009. “It’s so challenging that, when you complete it, you say, ‘I’ve got to come back and do this again to see if I can do it better.’ It just becomes a kind of passion.” Gilewicz shares this sentiment, especially in light of a somewhat unexpected performance

When Jamal Robertson (Dayton, Ohio) was a student/athlete at Ohio Northern, he was a sport management major. Seven seasons of professional football later, an international business background may have been just as beneficial. Since leaving the Polar Bears in 2001, Robertson has played football in seven cities, three countries and two continents. He has played on two different Canadian Football League teams, spent time in NFL Europe and is a six-year veteran of the National Football League. Robertson, a two-time All-American at ONU, just completed his first season as a member of the Toronto Argonauts of the CFL, where he played running back and returned kickoffs. The Argos struggled at the end of the season, losing their final nine games to finish 4-14. But Robertson was a bright spot for the squad, finishing sixth in the league with 645 yards rushing and six touchdowns despite starting only seven games at tailback. He also finished third in the league with a 25.6-yard average on kickoff returns. The 5-10, 220-pound Robertson has seen quite a diverse style and quality of football. “The style of game is very different from the NFL to the CFL,” he said. “In the NFL, I was considered undersized. In Canada, I’m a big back. Defenses are not used to a big guy like me pounding at them all day.” His professional career started with the Calgary Roughriders of the CFL, where he spent a year on the practice squad in 2001. He was then signed by the San Francisco 49ers and designated to the Rhine Fire of NFL Europe, where he led the league in rushing and was the league’s Offensive MVP in 2002. His 90-yard touchdown run is the longest in the history of the now-defunct league. Robertson then spent 2 ½ seasons with the 49ers as a third-string tailback and kickoff returner before being traded to the Carolina Panthers midway through the 2004 season, where he played for the next year and a half. He helped the 49ers to the playoffs in his second season with the team. The highlight of his Panthers’ career was in the 2005 NFC

Championship game when he was the featured back in the second half of that contest with the Seattle Seahawks. After being released by the Panthers in training camp of the 2006 campaign, the Atlanta Falcons signed him in December 2006. He was active for the regular season finale for the Falcons and was released after the season. Robertson has excelled at every level of football and has taken advantage of every opportunity. “I don’t feel like I got a fair chance in the NFL,” Robertson said. “I was pleased with how I performed when I got in, but there really weren’t many opportunities for me to show what I can do. I got off to a slow start here in Toronto, but I feel like I performed well down the stretch and showed everybody what I can do.” He sat out the 2007 season and was signed by the Saskatchewan Roughriders of the CFL in March 2008. The ’Riders traded him to Toronto after the first week of training camp where he excelled this fall.“Playing at Ohio Northern was very beneficial for my career,” Robertson said. “It got me ready to compete at the professional level. Teammates ask me where I played in college. They say ‘Where?’ But I just tell them that I’m a Polar Bear and then go show them what football the Polar Bear way is all about.” What does the future hold for Robertson? “I’d like to dig my cleats in and find a home where I can play for a few years,” Robertson said. “I like it here. Toronto is a great organization, and it is a good fit for me. Who knows what God has in store for me, but I’m going to work hard and see what happens.” While at Ohio Northern, Robertson was a two-time Hewlett Packard All-American running back and the 2000 Ohio Athletic Conference Co-Offensive Player of the Year. He is Ohio Northern’s all-time leader in rushing yards (4,169), all-purpose yards (5,388), and scoring (56 touchdowns, 338 points).He also led the Polar Bears to the NCAA Division III Playoffs in 1999 and 2000. During his season away from football in 2007, Robertson began to pursue a new line of work. “I had lined up parts in a couple of movies,” he said. “But when I got signed by Saskatchewan, I had to back out. But as soon as my football career is over, I would like to get into acting.” Robertson remains the same down-to-earth, optimistic, friendly and outgoing man he was during his days at Ohio Northern. If his football experience is any indication, Jamal Robertson will take full advantage of his opportunities in football, the movie business or whatever career he can dig his cleats into.

The Ohio Northern fall sports teams enjoyed unprecedented success in 2008, winning four of the six possible Ohio Athletic Conference championships, with a runner-up finish and a third-place finish in the other two sports. ONU’s quest for a fourth consecutive Men’s OAC All-Sports Trophy and third consecutive Women’s OAC All-Sports Trophy got off to quick starts, as both the men’s and women’s programs enjoy large leads entering the winter seasons. The Polar Bears’ success was not limited to the OAC, as the volleyball team reached the NCAA Division III Tournament’s Final Four, the men’s soccer squad reached its NCAA Tournament’s Elite 8 and the men’s cross country team finished 11th nationally at its NCAA Championships. Those three sports, plus the women’s cross country team, won OAC Championships this fall. Senior cross country runner Jimmy O’Brien (Pemberville, Ohio), senior volleyball player Katie Weininger (Sycamore, Ohio) and junior volleyball player Liz Schnelle (New Bremen, Ohio) all earned All-America honors, while Weininger and junior women’s soccer player Kaitlin Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind.) earned Academic All-America honors.

Football (5-5, 5-4 OAC) The Ohio Northern football team posted its 13th consecutive upper-division finish in the Ohio Athletic Conference in 2008 under fifth-year head coach Dean Paul. The Polar Bears were 5-5 overall and finished third in the 10-team OAC with a 5-4 league mark. Northern was ranked as high as No. 18 nationally during the season, marking its fifth consecutive season as a nationally ranked program. The Polar Bears won five of their last six games by a combined score of 159-51. Senior nose tackle Jake Fallis (Harrison, Ohio) was named First Team All-OAC, marking the third consecutive season he earned All-Conference accolades. Junior offensive guard Andrew Benchic (Englewood, Ohio) and sophomore Brent Donley (Southfield, Mich.) were also named First Team All-OAC. In all, 11 ONU players received All-Conference honors.

Volleyball (34-5, 9-0 OAC) The Polar Bear volleyball squad posted its NCAA-record 32nd consecutive winning season in 2008. ONU was ranked No. 8 nationally by the American Volleyball Coaches Association, advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the 25th season and reached the Final Four for the first time since 1989. Northern won its 21st Ohio Athletic Conference regular season championship and 17th OAC Tournament title in the 25-year history of the league under 18th-year head coach Kate Witte. Senior Katie Weininger (Sycamore, Ohio) and junior Liz Schnelle (New Bremen, Ohio) were both named First Team All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches Association. The pair were also named Co-Players of the Year in the OAC. Weininger had 1,421 assists, and Schnelle had a school-record 592 kills and a .395 hitting percentage. Men’s Soccer (20-6-1, 5-3-1 OAC) The Polar Bear men’s soccer team set a school record with 20 victories and reached the Elite 8 of the NCAA Tournament in 2008 under 11th-year head coach Brent Ridenour. Ohio Northern finished 20-6-1 overall and finished third in the OAC with a 5-3-1 record. ONU won the OAC Tournament title for the second time in the last three seasons and won three NCAA Tournament matches to reach the Elite 8 for the first time in school history. Northern was ranked as high as No. 23 nationally by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America during the season and reached the OAC Tournament for the fifth time in six seasons. Senior Ryan Smith (Miamisburg, Ohio), senior Adam Ross (West Chester, Ohio) and freshman Christian Huelsman (Wellington, Ohio) were named First Team All-OAC. Smith was named the OAC Defender of the Year and was a repeat First Team Academic All-OAC honoree. Huelsman led the OAC in scoring with 44 points and in goals with 18 to go with his eight assists. Junior Chris Corrado (Cincinnati, Ohio) was also named First Team Academic All-OAC. In all, seven Polar Bears were named All-Conference or Academic All-Conference in 2008.

Women’s Soccer (14-5-1, 7-2 OAC) The Polar Bear women’s soccer team posted its fifth consecutive winning season with a 14-5-1 record under fifth-year head coach Mark Batman. Ohio Northern was second in the OAC with a 7-2 mark and advanced to the OAC Tournament for the fourth time in the past five years, where the Polar Bears finished as runners-up.

Junior Kaitlin Sanders (Fort Wayne, Ind.) was named First Team Academic All-America and was a repeat First Team All-OAC award winner and was the 2008 OAC Midfielder of the Year. Senior Katie Schaadt (Westerville, Ohio) was a repeat First Team All-OAC honoree and was the OAC Defender of the Year. Senior Kristin Reininger (Irondequoit, N.Y.) and senior Erin Stapp (Willoughby, Ohio) earned First Team All-OAC honors. In all, five Polar Bears were named All-Conference or Academic All-OAC this season.

Men’s Cross Country (157-23) The men’s cross country team won its second consecutive OAC Championship and finished 11th at the NCAA Championships under first-year head coach Ryan New. The Polar Bears finished the season ranked No. 13 nationally by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country

Coaches Association and posted its 11th consecutive winning season with a 157-23 mark. Senior Jimmy O’Brien (Pemberville, Ohio) earned All-Conference, All-Region and All-America honors for the second consecutive year to lead ONU. Seniors Thomas Adam (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio), Paul Lewis (Medina, Ohio) and Eric Porter (Wauseon, Ohio) and junior Alan Bowsher (Bowling Green, Ohio) all earned All-Conference and All-Region accolades for the second time in their respective careers. Northern’s appearance at the NCAA Championships was its third in a row and fourth in team history.

Women’s Cross Country (106-40) The Ohio Northern women’s cross country team posted its 17th consecutive winning season and won the Ohio Athletic Conference title for the third time in the last four seasons in 2008 under first-year head coach Ryan New. The Polar Bears also finished 10th at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships and posted a 106-40 record. Junior Rachel Smith (Bellevue, Ohio) earned All-Great Lakes Region and All-OAC honors. Senior Regina Bresson (Canfield, Ohio), senior Katie Andrzejewski (Eastlake, Ohio) and freshman Mallory Bloom (Kenton, Ohio) also earned All-Conference honors. Northern also won the Hanover (Ind.) Invitational.


Raabe College of Pharmacy Honors Distinguished Alumni Three alumni were honored with the Raabe College of Pharmacy Distinguished Alumni Award at a banquet in the McIntosh Center faculty and staff dining room on Sept. 11. This is the second year that Distinguished Alumni Awards have been presented by the ONU Raabe College of Pharmacy. Vern H. Hakes, PHC ’33, Hon. D. ’76, Charles R. Brading, BSPh ’57, and James E. Turner, BSPh ’63, were recognized for their outstanding career accomplishments and their contributions to ONU. “We are very honored to recognize these three distinguished alumni,” said Dr. Jon Sprague, dean of the College of Pharmacy. “These individuals laid the foundation for the proud tradition and excellence the pharmacy college has gained in its 125-year history.” Hakes graduated from ONU in 1933 with a degree in pharmaceutical chemistry. While in school, he was a member of Rho Chi, a national pharmacy honor society. He joined Eli Lilly in 1939 as a medical service representative, advanced to district manager in 1954, became director of marketing and planning for the company’s international division in 1959, and assumed the vice presidency in 1965. Hakes continued his relationship with Ohio Northern as president of the Alumni Association, a member of ONU’s Heritage Club and a lifetime member of both the Henry Solomon Lehr Society and ONU’s Board of Trustees. ONU honored Hakes with an honorary doctorate in 1976 and the Distinguished Alumni Award in 2005. In addition, Hakes provided generous funding for the Hakes-Pierstorf Family Pharmacy Educaiton Center in 2007.

Brading was a member of the American Students of Pharmacy while in school. After graduating with a pharmacy degree in 1957, he enlisted in the Army. He returned to Wapakoneta, Ohio, and practiced pharmacy in his family’s store for 33 years. During this time, he became active in politics and served as mayor and a member of city council. He was elected to the Ohio House of Representatives 86th District and served from 1991 to 2000. In the House, he served as chair of the education committee and a member of the health, retirement and aging committee, Veteran’s Affairs committee, and rules and reference committee. He also was a member of the Ohio Board of Pharmacy for eight years, serving as president from 1979 to 1980. Brading has received numerous pharmacy awards, including the Bowl of Hygeia Award, Retailer of the Year, the Merck, Sharp and Dohme Award, and the Beal Award. He received ONU’s Distinguished Alumni Award in 1993. Turner graduated from ONU in 1963 with a degree in pharmacy. While attending ONU, he was a member of Rho Chi. He practiced pharmacy in Newark, Ohio, and worked as a sales representative for Eli Lilly before returning to Ada and purchasing Gardner’s Drug Store. Shortly after, Turner joined the faculty of the Raabe College of Pharmacy as the pharmacist of the model pharmacy and developed the college’s externship program. He was the advisor for

Phi Lambda Sigma, a pharmacy honorary fraternity, and served as treasurer for the Ohio Pharmacist’s Association and president for the Board of Pharmacy. In the community, Turner served on the Hardin County Health Board, the Ada Area Chamber of Commerce and the Liberty Bankshares Board. He received the ONU Distinguished Alumni Award in 2000.

30 years of ONU rugby! Come celebrate on

The Ohio Northern University rugby team will celebrate its 30th anniversary on Sept. 12, 2009. The celebration will consist of a rugby match between current players and recent alumni as well as a possible “old boys” match played by our more veteran alumni players. Making Beautiful Music: Marge (Stedcke) Hollinger, BSEd ’48

Marge (Stedcke) Hollinger, BSEd ’48, loves making music, and has for as long as she can remember. “As a child I begged for piano lessons,” she recalls. She was in the sixth grade when her parents let her begin piano. That was just the start. She sang in her high school choir and in her church choir in Celina and accompanied the boy’s glee club in high school. Today, she is in her 53rd year as a member of the choir at Trinity United Methodist Church in Lima, Ohio, and still plays piano once a month for early services, plus an occasional grand piano duet or piano-organ duet. “That’s still keeping my mind active,” she laughs. In between, she shared her love of music with students in the Ada and Elida school districts as a teacher and raised three sons with her late husband Henry C. Hollinger, BSCE ’49. Two of their sons, Bruce A. Hollinger, BSCE ’75, and Rev. Mark S. Hollinger, BSPH ’79, are also ONU graduates. Her husband, who served Lima and Allen County, Ohio, in professional capacities, was a member of ONU’s Board of Trustees for 17 years. “Those were wonderful years,” she says. Although she first considered attending another college, she has strong family ties to ONU. Her sister and her sister’s husband are both ONU grads, as well as two of their three sons. “My grandfather attended the normal school for a short time, so we have a lot of tradition there,” she adds. Hollinger came to ONU during World War II when there were few students and there was a strong possibility the University would close. “The professors stayed on without pay during the war,” she explains. “I had marvelous professors. They certainly prepared me well for the future.” While she continues the travel she enjoyed with her husband – most recently, she visited France and enjoyed a trip to Peru to see the Incan city of Machu Picchu – music is still her first love. “Music has always been a part of my life,” she says. “When I sit down at the piano or when I sing, I think of nothing else. It’s just complete relaxation and forgetting all your worries and concerns.” She also plays in the church’s bell choir and in the past sang with the Lima Civic Chorus, the Symphony Chorus and the Lima Madrigal Singers. “It’s fun making music with other people,” she says.

University President: Jack R. Ohle, BA ’69

Jack R. Ohle, BA ’69, has become the 16th president of Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, Minn. The oldest Lutheran college in Minnesota, Gustavus Adolphus was founded in 1862 by Swedish immigrants and is named for Swedish King Gustav II Adolf. The private liberal arts college has an enrollment of 2,600 and is known for strong science, writing, music, athletic, study-abroad and service-learning programs. Ohle took office July 1, 2008. At inauguration ceremonies on Oct. 3, 2008, Ohio Northern University representatives included professor Terry D. Keiser, BS ’64, professor of biological sciences and chair of the department of biological and allied health sciences, and William L. Robinson, BSEd ’61, Hon. D. ’05, H of F ’05, executive assistant to the president. Keiser and Robinson are friends, former colleagues and fraternity brothers of Ohle. “Having Bill and Terry at the inauguration was just fantastic,” Ohle said. After receiving his undergraduate degree in social work from ONU, Ohle went on to graduate work at Hamma School of Theology in Springfield, Ohio. He earned his master of arts degree in higher education administration from Bowling Green State University and holds an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Wartburg Theological Seminar in Dubuque, Iowa. Before accepting the presidency of Gustavus Adolphus, Ohle spent 10 years as president of Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. While there, he oversaw a $90 million capital campaign and $104 million in capital improvements, which included the construction of a state-of-the-art center for wellness, a new science building and a new student center. The endowment doubled, 21 full-time faculty members were added and the student body became larger and more diverse. Prior to his tenure at Wartburg, Ohle served at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, first as vice president for institutional advancement and then as senior vice president for external affairs and secretary to the university. He was also vice president for advancement at Nebraska Wesleyan University and Ohio Northern’s director of alumni affairs and assistant development director. Ohle is the third most senior president of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) Colleges and Universities. He has chaired the executive committee of the Council of Presidents of ELCA Colleges and Universities, the Lutheran Educational Conference of North America (LECNA) and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE).

Down Under with the Chiles

It’s summer in Queensland, Australia, and a long way from ONU’s Tundra. While Chris, BSEE ’82, and Beth Ann (Brown) Chiles, BA ’82, are enjoying the beach, rather than snow, they have not forgotten how their time at ONU made it all possible. It was ONU that provided Chris with the solid engineering foundation and Beth Ann with a social worker’s outlook. And it was in the English Chapel that Chris and Beth Ann exchanged their wedding vows in July 1982. Like several generations of their families, ONU is a big part of their lives. The move Down Under is just the latest in a career in which Chris has applied his engineering knowledge in a variety of settings. After five years active duty in the Navy, where he was an instructor for officers and enlisted men at the Navy Nuclear Power School in Orlando, Fla., he took a position with Corning Glass as senior equipment engineer and facilities engineer at Greenville, Ohio. That was followed by moves to Monaca, Pa., where he was manager of product and process development for Anchor Hocking Glass, a Newell company; to Freeport, Ill., where he was engineering manager for Newell at the window furnishings plant; Mundelein, Ill., as plant manager of Intercraft Burnes; and Statesville, N.C., as plant manager with Intercraft Burnes. After three years in North Carolina, he started his own company (which he sold in 2002) and then a second business in Lexington, N.C. In 2006, he accepted a position as vice president of operations with Assa Abloy in Mason City, Iowa. In June 2008, Chris took the position as general manager of mill operations for all of Colonial Sugar Refining (CRS) sugar mills, and he and Beth Ann moved to North Queensland, Australia. CRS has been in operation since 1855, operates sugar mills in Australia and New Zealand, and produces most of the sugar and associated products used in the two nations. With CRS, Chris says, he has the opportunity to use the basic fundamentals of engineering to help improve the overall profitability of the mills. Beth Ann is a “trailing spouse” but still makes use of her social work education. “This move to Australia, by far, is the most exciting thing for both of us,” says Beth Ann. “If you had told us a year ago that we would be living in Australia, on a beach, we would have thought you were crazy. God has blessed us so much over the years, and this is just another example of His goodness, and we are living each day to the fullest as we explore our new country. We are probably both most proud of our sons, Micah and Aaron, who have grown into fine young men. If we can leave nothing else behind when we are gone, we are happy that we have been able to raise two fine sons who will make positive contributions to society.”

Homecoming 2008 showcased true Northern pride by dedicating its theme to ONU’s mascot, the polar bear. “Come Home to Polar Bear Nation” welcomed alumni, friends and students of all generations and captured the

spirit of Ohio Northern University. The annual Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony took place on Friday evening, and six individuals were hon-

ored for their athletic accomplishments. Saturday was packed with exciting activities, including the Stephanie Spielman Walk/Run for Breast Cancer, a jewelry-making session, college open houses, the dedication of the Eugene N. Hanson Reading Room, athletic

events and Homecoming parade on Main Street. The tailgate picnic at Dial-Roberson Stadium is growing each year! All five colleges and

student and community organizations gathered under a tent with various displays. Such displays included class reunion areas, special foam paw and bandana giveaways, and a robot that served ice cream! Carnival rides, cotton candy and face painting remained open as the football team defeated Marietta. As the day came to a close, the new Alumni House, located at 115 W. Lima Ave., provided an open house and alumni jazz band concert for all alumni. To cap off the evening, a balloon glow was held on the Tundra, and fireworks provided the backdrop. A Micky Dolenz concert at the Freed Center allowed us to bid farewell to Homecoming 2008. As alumni and friends prepared to head home, the annual sweethearts brunch on Sunday morning afforded one more opportunity for fellowship and a chapel service blessed the travels of all guests.

Cari (Treisch) Bahmer, BA ’98 Bahmer graduated from ONU in 1998 with her degree in elementary education. As a volleyball player, she earned All-America honors and was voted All-OAC three different seasons. In 1997, Bahmer was named OAC Player of the Year. She currently ranks first on ONU’s all-time block solos list with 162. A high jumper in track and field, Bahmer was a three-time OAC Champion between both indoor and outdoor competitions. She was a six-time national quali-fier for the NCAA Championships in high jump and held the school record upon graduation, clearing a height of 5-7. Bahmer has continued her volley-

ball career as a coach. She and her husband, Michael, live in Coshocton, Ohio, with their two children.

Nicholas Bertke, BS ’97 Bertke graduated from North-ern in 1997 with a BS in health and physical education. Bertke was a four-year letterwinner for the Ohio North-ern men’s basketball team and played a major role in the 1992-93 National Championship season as a freshman. He was Second Team All-America and received the Gregory Award for most outstanding player in the OAC his senior season in 1995-96. Follow-ing his college career, Bertke started playing professionally in Japan in

March 1997 for the OSG Phoenix, lo-cated in Ichinomiya, where the he was known as “The Dunker” by the fans. In 2008, Bertke was named the Western Buckeye League Coach of the Year for his performance at Shawnee High School. He and his wife, Monique, live in Lima, Ohio, with their three chil-dren.

Cary (Gunning) Hartness, BSPh ’98 Hartness graduated from the Raabe College of Pharmacy in 1998. She was a six-time OAC swimming champion, finishing first in the 50 free, 100 free and 200 free in both 1994 and 1995. After the 1993-94 season, she was awarded the OAC Inspirational Award for her performance. Hartness was All-OAC for three straight seasons and was dubbed the OAC Most Outstanding Swimmer in 1995. Presently, she is a staff pharmacist at the Eastgate Kroger Pharmacy in Cincinnati, Ohio. She resides in Batavia, Ohio, with her husband, Jim, and their two children.

Edward Miklavcic, BSME ’76 Miklavcic earned his BSME in me-chanical engineering in 1976. Miklavcic played for Ohio Northern’s baseball team from 1973-76, holding the titles of First Team District IV All-American, First Team All-OAC and Northern’s MVP.

Miklavcic was also team captain as a senior in 1976. His 1974 team competed on the NCAA Division II level and participated in both the Midwest regional and World Series tourna-ments. Miklavcic retired from Northrop Grum-man where he was a flight operations engineer. He and his wife, Kathryn, reside in Wil-loughby, Ohio. They have a twenty-two year old son, Thomas.

Stanley Reineke, BS, BSBA ’88 Reineke earned his degree from ONU in marketing and industrial technology in 1988. He lettered all four years in basketball at Northern. Reineke is now currently 10th on ONU’s all-time scoring list with 1,417 points. At one point, Reineke made 41 consecutive free throws during the record-breaking season, while his percentage ranked him second in the nation that year and still holds as an ONU single-season record. He was named team MVP for the 1986-87 and 1987-88 seasons. During those same years, Reineke was selected First Team All-OAC twice and First Team All-District once. He capped off his senior season by be-ing named Honorable Mention All-America I 1988. For his career, Reineke ranks in the top 15 in 10 categories and top 10 in seven categories. He currently is the sales and market-ing manager at Pax Products Inc. in Celina, Ohio, and resides in New Knoxville, Ohio, with his wife, Susan, and their three children.

Learning to Heel: Lynne (Miller) Scott, BSBA ’88

Are dogs and humans all that different? Lynne (Miller) Scott, BSBA ’88, kennel-owner and inspirational writer, doesn’t think so. Working with four-legged clients, she sees the same kind of behaviors she sees in herself and others. This insight, and dealing with the debilitating illness and loss of her husband, Darren Scott, BS ’87, H of F ’97, led Lynne to write her first book, Dingo Devotionals: Learning to Heel, published in 2007. After her husband’s diagnosis with ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig’s disease, the Scotts took some time off in Florida before moving back to the Ada area and a country home with a pond, open fields and a kennel. “I’d go out to the kennel and see a behavior in a dog and say, ‘I do the same thing!’ It’s embarrassing,” Lynne laughs. She’d share her insights with her husband, and she admits, “We were struggling with our faith and everything we were going through.” For example, she recalls one dog that refused to cooperate with the trainer and continued to push and nudge its owner until the trainer overcame the dog’s resistance. “The dog flipped out,” she recalls. “But in about 20 seconds, it stopped and the trainer could take it through the entire drill.” “It was the idea that ‘you’re not in control.’ I watched this and decided that this is how I’d been toward God: annoyed and bugging Him, not willing to go accept the situation. I was fighting it, which I think is normal, but I had to see it in a larger context.” While her husband, the 1987 Division III National Wrestling Champion in his weight class, “was not the most reflective person,” she says, “he would come in from mowing the lawn and offer some new perspective. It was always in ways we could relate. For me it was with dogs.” Darren died July 26, 2003, at the age of 39. It took Lynne some time to decide to share the perspectives they had gained. “When you’ve suffered a great deal, and if you manage to fight through and learn something that might be interesting to other people, you should share it,” she believes. “So many people helped me because they had gone through their own pain. I realized how vital it was when one of my friends passed away, and I started thinking about how much we need other people.” So, in April 2007, she began writing her devotional, following the dog trainer’s obedience steps as her outline and adding insights from her dog Foster (the dingo), and her kennel clients. She ended with an essay about Darren and his determination to “wrestle up,” competing above his weight class to make himself better. The book is self-published through AuthorHouse, a move Lynne, as a savvy business graduate, chose because she knew kennel clients, friends and family would be interested, and she wasn’t as concerned with big sales of a larger market and the hoops necessary to court a major publisher. It’s an Emmy for Dorian L. (Barrett) Thompson, BA ’99, and three of her colleagues at NewsChannel5, the ABC affiliate in Cleveland! The award is for the series “Cashing in on Kindness,” an investigative report on who is getting rich off donations that people thought were helping veterans. Her position as senior investigative producer for the television station is just the latest in a career that began at CNN in Atlanta, Ga. “Shortly after graduation, I moved to Atlanta, Ga., for a job with CNN. I worked at CNN for 4.5 years, spending the majority of the time with the shows ‘People in the News’ and ‘CNN Presents,’ the biography series and the documentary series, respectively,” Thompson says. She adds, “I married my college sweetheart, Jeremy Thompson, BSBA ’00, in June 2003. We moved back to Cleveland in 2004.” ONU has been an important part of her success, Thompson says. “I had such an amazing college experience, and everything I learned in those four years had a profound effect on me.” She goes on to explain, “The faculty took the time to get to know me as an individual, and they motivated and challenged me to find my full potential. They provided hands-on experience and countless opportunities related to my field of broadcasting. They also provided connections to ONU alumni and friends of the University who were always willing to help graduates.” That’s why she is eager to recommend ONU to potential students. “First and foremost, the faculty and staff at ONU truly care about their students, and it shows.” She says, “The people at ONU foster relationships with all

of their students. To me, that was invaluable. And you know what? All those individuals are still there for me today. Duff Receives 2008 William L. Robinson Young Alumni Award

Jason Duff, BSBA ’05, is the recipient of the 2008 William L. Robinson Young Alumni Award. The award is given each year to an individual who is committed to Ohio Northern University, his/her profession and the community. The award is named in honor of Bill Robinson, BSEd ’61, Hon. D. ’05, H of F ’05. Robinson has served ONU for more than 50 years in numerous capacities and has been a positive influence on countless students and alumni. Duff was recognized prior to ONU’s Homecoming football game against Marietta. Duff is an acclaimed speaker, real estate developer and award-winning entrepreneur. He is the founder and CEO of Community Storage & Properties Ltd. and COMSTOR Outdoor Advertising Ltd. While an ONU student, Duff was a member of the Dean’s Advisory Council, Leaders’ Council, University Singers, Men’s Chorus and the Northernaires. He also performed in more than 12 Freed Center for the Performing Arts productions. As an alumnus, Duff serves on the ONU Alumni Board and The Dicke College of Business Administration Advisory Board, and he is a visiting lecturer in entrepreneurship. Additionally, he is the co-founder of the “Be Your Own Boss” summer business camp for high school students. Duff has been recognized for his contributions as a real estate developer and for his role in spearheading revitalization efforts that contributed millions of dollars in new growth, appreciation and community investment. In 2005, he was awarded the prestigious Global Student Entrepreneurship Social Impact Award and was featured in numerous magazines, television and radio programs. He is also an active keynote speaker for the Extreme Entrepreneurship Tour, sponsored by Inc. magazine. Duff currently resides in Columbus, Ohio, where he is writing a book and creating a foundation to benefit global causes and initiatives.

Virginia (Rader) Reynolds, Columbus, OH, September 21, 2008. While at Northern, Virginia was a member of the basketball team, chorus and University Singers. She enjoyed a career as a teacher, coach and counselor. A 63-year member of the King Ave. United Methodist Church, Virginia served as a choir member and Sunday school teacher. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawson. John “Jay” Stahler, Clayton, OH, June 10, 2008. Jay attended Northern as a direct result of encouragement from his high school teacher and coach, W.K. Whitehead. After attending Northern, Jay went on to enjoy a successful career as an anesthesiologist for Good Samaritan Hospital and Miami Valley Hospital. He was a member of several organizations, including the Miami Valley Golf Club, Montgomery County Scholarship Committee, National Conference for Community and Justice, United Church of Christ Commission for Racial Justice and College Hill Community Church. A lifetime member of the Henry Solomon Lehr Society, Jay was preceded in death by his wife, Marjorie. Judy Tabor, Lima, OH, August 31, 2008. Judy was a cook for Ohio Northern University’s Phi Mu Delta fraternity for 29 years. Judy played piano and organ at Maysville United Methodist Church, where she was also a member of its United Methodist Women’s group. A member of the Ada Senior Citizens Group, Judy enjoyed bowling. She is survived by her husband, Larry. Gerald Vinella, North Brunswick, NJ, September 11, 2008. After attending Ohio Northern, Gerald went on to receive a bachelor’s degree in education from Newark State College. A football and wrestling coach, Gerald enjoyed a 40-year career as a history teacher for Jonathan Dayton Regional and Piscataway High Schools. He is survived by his wife, Janice. Frederick Wintzer, Wapakoneta, OH, September 23, 2008. After 46 years of service, Frederick retired as president of G.A. Wintzer & Son Co. His memberships included the Auglaize County Regional Planning Commission, Hamer Lodge 167 Free & Accepted Masons, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8445, Wapakoneta Country Club and Wapakoneta Board of Education. Frederick received several honors throughout his lifetime, including the Citizen of the Year Award by the Wapakoneta Area Chamber of Commerce and the Wapakoneta Education Association Friends of Education Award. He was the proud recipient of two patents for a special bulk-hauling vehicle and a gas pressure tankage press. A veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, Frederick is survived by his wife, Mary Alice (Spar), BSEd ’49.

Cora (Walcutt) Swartz, AA, Chelsea, MI, October 24, 2007. In addition to receiving a degree from Ohio Northern, Cora went on to receive a bachelor’s degree and master’s degree from Michigan State University. She served as the principal of Marble School for 20 years and was a Title IX coordinator for a brief time during retirement. A devoted member of Peoples Church in East Lansing, MI, Cora enjoyed being an elder, Stephen minister and teacher in the parish. Cora was preceded in death by her husband, Howard.

Gay Banes, BSEd, Canonsburg, PA, June 4, 2008. Gay began his professional career as a chemist and later went on to become and attorney. He worked for the Commonwealth of PA Claim Settlement, Department of Public Assistance, Flexcell International, William Penn Association, and he also maintained a private practice. He was instrumental in the creation of the South Allegheny School District and served the organization for 35 years. His memberships included the Allegheny Bar Association, American Bar Association, Audubon Society, American-Hungarian Foundation of War Relief, Bethlen Youth Federation, Hungarian Freedom Foundation, and Vizsla Club of America, among many others. Gay was the recipient of the Fraternalist of the Year Award by the Fraternal Societies of Greater Pittsburgh in 1987. He was preceded in death by his wife, Helene.

Kay Cook, Lima, OH, August 10, 2008. Kay retired from Northern after 36 years of service in the Computer Center. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert. A native of Duquesne, PA, Joseph was described as a talented composer, musician and artist. Skilled at his craft, Joseph was the youngest member of the Pittsburgh Opera Orchestra and a graduate of the Cleveland Institute of Music and Western Reserve University. He held many titles, including artistic director for the Lima Symphony Orchestra, member of the Fox Studio Orchestra, violinist with the Cumberland Trio, conductor of the Sage City Symphony and consultant to the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. He was the founder of several organizations, including the Lima Youth Orchestra, the Strings Festival at Ohio Northern, and the Manchester Area Youth String Orchestra. He was the co-founder of the Michael Rudiakov Music Academy and a lecturer in music at Ohio Northern University from 1967-71. He is survived by his wife, Pamela. Anne (Michael) Grindle, Maumee, OH, July 6, 2008. While Attending Northern, Anne was a member of the cheerleading squad and Zeta Tau Alpha. Louis Helwick, Dallas, TX, February 18, 2005. A veteran of the U.S. Army during World War II, Louis received a Legion of Merit award. Louis was a regional operations manager for Goodyear Tire and Rubber Co. and ultimately retired after 39 years of service. His memberships included the Episcopoal Church of the Good Shepherd, First United Methodist Church in Kenton, OH, and Latham Lodge 154 A.F. & A.M. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara (Kinsey) Holycross-Helwick, AA ’37, BSEd ’43. James “Jim” Mitchell, Lima, OH, August 5, 2008. A veteran of the Army Air Corps during World War II, Jim received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Oklahoma, a master’s degree from the University of Pittsburgh, and a doctorate from The Ohio State University. Jim retired as a fellow engineer scientist after enjoying a 41-year career with Westinghouse Electric Corp. His work at Westinghouse earned him five patents and a Westinghouse Engineering Achievement Award, among other honors. After his retirement, Jim served as a consultant for Sundstrand Aerospace and a substitute teacher for Allen County schools for over 10 years. A member, deacon and head usher at Market Street Presbyterian Church, Jim is survived by his wife, Laura.

Alan Sadurski Alan Sadurski, tenured professor of chemistry at Ohio Northern University, died Friday, Aug. 22, 2008. A native of Detroit, Mich., Alan received a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry from Oakland University in 1971 and a doctorate from Wayne State University in 1978. His career in education included such positions as visiting professor at Miami University, graduate teaching assistant at Wayne State University, and instructor at Michigan Christian College. For 28 years, he served as a professor of chemistry at Ohio Northern. The lives he touched, the friends he made, and the students he influenced are simply immense. His devotion to Ohio Northern truly paralleled his love of teaching. Since 1996, he belonged to the American Chemical Society. His passion for music was evident in his memberships, which included Bluffton Chorale, Concentus, Lima Symphony Chorus, ONU Men’s Chorus and jazz ensemble and the Salvation Army Staff Band. Alan is survived by his wife, Gailyn, BM ’05, son, Stephen (Rachel), daughter, Anna (Greg) Heier, two stepsons, Jason and Matthew Klem, and grandchildren.

He was a member of the National Education and Ohio Education Associations. Norbert was preceded in death by his first wife, June, and his second wife, Marcella. William “Bill” Derry, BSPh, Hon. D.’01, Caldwell, ID, September 12, 2008. While at Northern, Bill was a member of chorus, Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and the football and wrestling teams. After serving with the Army Air Corps during World War II, Bill went on to graduate from Northern and work for Cheffy Drugs. He and his wife, Rondalee, who survives, opened Derry Drugs in 1953 and ultimately retired in 1990. His memberships included the Board of the Van Wert County Foundation, First United Methodist Church, Van Wert Elks Club, and Van Wert Rotary Club. He served in leadership roles for several organizations, including the Republican Party, Ohio State Pharmaceutical Association, Van Wert Heart Association, and Van Wert Junior Achievement. Bill was inducted into the Ft. Wayne Area Junior Achievement Hall of Fame and Ohio Senior Citizens Hall of Fame.

Donald Klein, BSME, Lima, OH, September 4, 2008. A veteran of the Marine Corps during the Korean War, Donald worked in various engineering capacities for over 35 years. He ultimately retired from AlliedSignal Foundation, Inc., where he worked as a senior manufacturing engineer. His efforts in the automotive product development area resulted in several patents. Donald is survived by his wife, Joan (Meier), BSEd ’68.

Robert C. Bolon Robert C. Bolon, 85, died Nov. 16, 2008, in Cleveland. He served as president of the Hillier Family Foundation board, which supports the Metzger Nature Center, ONU’s nature center in Tuscarawas County. The Robert C. Bolon Academic Field Study Center, the 8,000-square-foot facility at the Nature Center, is named in his honor. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty L. (Martin) Bolon; a son, Thomas C. Bolon; a daughter, Laura A. Schaffter; and four grandchildren. A graduate of The Ohio State University, he was a retired executive from J.C. Penny Company Inc. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and recipient of a purple heart.

After working as a perfusionist at North Ridge Hospital in Fort Lauderdale for over 25 years, he went on to enjoy a second career that stemmed from his hobby of raising orchids, bromeliads and water lilies. He established Dania Beach Water Gardens and Gifts and served as its president. A lecturer on plants and plant care, Tom was a member of the Florida Council of Bromeliad Societies and the International Water Lily and Water Gardening Society, among other organizations. David Gartrell Jr., BSPh, Strasburg, OH, June 25, 2008. While at Northern, David was a member of Phi Mu Delta fraternity and he participated in intramural sports. David worked for Walgreens as a staff pharmacist. An avid sports fan, David enjoyed reading, fishing, music, and his faith. He is survived by his wife, Sarah (Longstreet), BSPh ’97.

Oren E. Dickason, JD ’38 Oren E. Dickason, JD ’38, died Jan. 6, 2009, in Lima at age 95. A graduate of the Pettit College of Law, Dickason practiced his profession in Lima for more 65 years and served as an adjunct professor of law at ONU. Dickason was a member of the Allen County, Ohio State and American Bar Associations. He served as president of the Allen County Bar Association and was a member of the Probate and Trust Law Committee of the Ohio State Bar Association. Dickason was born Aug. 29, 1913, in Lima to Oren and Bertha Dickason. On Dec. 29, 1939, he married Margaret S. Steiner, who preceded him in death. He was a member of Trinity Methodist Church, Lima, where he served as president of the board of trustees. He served on the board of trustees of the West Ohio Conference of the United Methodist Church and as chairman of the Section of Higher Education and Campus Ministries. He served as president of the Central Savings Association and was a founding trustee of the Lima Symphony Orchestra. He volunteered as president of the Shawnee Council of the Boy Scouts of America and as trustee of the YWCA and YMCA. He was a trustee for Baldwin-Wallace College for 22 years, where he received an honorary Doctor of Laws degree in 1993. He was a 68-year member of Lodge 205 Free & Accepted Masons. He was a member of Scottish Rite Valley of Toledo, the Lima Shrine Club, Chapter 49 Royal Arch Masons and Council 20 Royal & Select Masons. He is survived by a son, Miner (Meg) Dickason, JD ’67, of Lima; a daughter, Anne (Joe) Groth, of Portland, Ore.; and a special friend, Eileen Flynn, of Lima.

The William L. Robinson Young Alumni Award, established on May 29, 2004, was created to honor and recognize 45 years of influencing Ohio Northern University students and to ensure that this legacy continues throughout the next 45 years. The annual recipient demonstrates passion and loyalty toward their profession, community and alma mater, Ohio Northern University.

Your participation fee of $125 includes range balls, 18 holes of golf with a cart, and a post-golf dinner. Alumni HeadquartersMcIntosh Center will again be this year’s Alumni Weekend Headquarters. Upon arrival, you should report to the registration area to receive your weekend materials, including room assignments, tickets for events, and any other information you should need. A festive atmosphere, including helpful student ambassadors, ONU yearbooks from the mid-50s, and music from your years on campus will greet you at Alumni Headquarters. In addition, information will be available from the Office of Admissions. Make Alumni Headquarters your first stop when you come to campus.

LodgingWe are pleased to now offer you a room at the beautiful Inn at Ohio Northern University. You may reserve a room at this full-service luxury hotel, at a rate of $90 plus tax, by calling 419-772-2500. This block will be held through May 15, 2009. Please refer to Alumni Weekend when calling to make your reservation.

Also located on Northern’s campus are rooms in Ohio Northern’s Campus Village Apartments. This will be available to attendees at this year’s Alumni Weekend on Friday and Saturday nights at a cost of $35 per night. You may reserve a campus village apartment in the registration form.

Barnes & Noble BookstoreThe University Bookstore, located in McIntosh Center, will be open throughout the weekend so you may purchase ONU memorabilia. The bookstore’s hours of operation are below, and will be posted at the registration area as well.

Friday - 8:30 a.m. - 5 p.m. Saturday - 9 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Please visit the bookstore during these hours to take advantage of being on campus once again and to show your ONU pride when you return home.

Northern On MainONU’s own coffee shop will be open for business during Alumni Weekend for guests to take advantage of freshly brewed Starbucks coffee, or a grilled sandwich of their choice. Its hours of operation are below, and will be posted at the registration area as well.

Elzay Gallery of ArtVisit the Elzay Gallery of Art on ONU’s campus. The gallery will be open from noon - 5 p.m. both Friday and Saturday of Alumni Weekend for your enjoyment. This year’s exhibit features ONU’s own Jaye Bumbaugh, BSEd ’59.

tours of CampusTours of campus will be available throughout the weekend led by ONU student ambassadors in attendance. They would be happy to give you a guided tour so you may reminisce about how campus looked in 1959, and how it has changed over the years.

Horse and Carriage Campus toursFor the fifth straight year, tours of campus in a horse and carriage will be available from 2 - 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 30. There will be many other opportunities for tours of campus throughout the weekend, so please take advantage of them to see the new buildings and renovated structures on campus.

Alumni College SeminarsThe Alumni College seminars will be discussions led by Ohio Northern faculty members and will cover topics selected by your peers that we hope will interest you.
