Department of Family Medicine Alumni Association Spring 2013 Volume 2, Issue 1 Helping Out a Friend! Join us on Friday, May 17 at 6 p.m. at Dohertys Pub to reminisce with your fellow alum and to meet our residents. Many of you know my classmate, Jenny Souther, MD, MHRI Family Medicine Class of 2002. She was practicing in Cumberland, RI until a couple of years ago...starting in 2007 she developed gradually wors- ening autoimmune lung disease, had to close her practice, and has now been on the transplant list at the Brigham, waiting for a new set of lungs, for more than two years. Her small frame makes it even harder to find a good match. To boost her chances of success, shes now registered with the transplant program at the Cleveland Clinic, which has a much larger program than Bostons, but the trouble is, her insurance wont cover many of the costs (such as flight to Cleveland in their private jet when her number comes up). So friends and family are setting up the following fundraisers for Jennys Lung Fund: Sunday, April 21, 1 - 4 p.m. Carousel Grille, 859 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick, RI (401) 921-3430, appetizers, entertainment, raffles, cash bar at : $25. Contact Lisa for tickets at [email protected] Friday, April 26, 7 - 10 p.m. Diva night at Clayground! $10 admission includes raffles and snacks. Standard studio fees with partial pro- ceeds going towards Jennys Lung Fund. Contact Heather at [email protected]. This will be a BYOB event. You can also make a general donation c/o Heather Loring (Jenny's sister) at 455 Greenbush Rd, East Greenwich RI 02818. As Jennys classmates all know, she is the quintessential team player who generously helps out anyone in need, but rarely asks for help herself. Lets give her a hand! Melissa Nothnagle

at Doherty’s Pub to reminisce with

your fellow alum and to meet our residents.

Many of you know my classmate, Jenny Souther, MD, MHRI Family Medicine Class of 2002. She was practicing in Cumberland, RI until a couple of years ago...starting in 2007 she developed gradually wors-ening autoimmune lung disease, had to close her practice, and has now been on the transplant list at the Brigham, waiting for a new set of lungs, for more than two years. Her small frame makes it even harder to find a good match.

To boost her chances of success, she’s now registered with the transplant program at the Cleveland Clinic, which has a much larger program than Boston’s, but the trouble is, her insurance won’t cover many of the costs (such as flight to Cleveland in their private jet when her number comes up). So friends and family are setting up the following fundraisers for “Jenny’s Lung Fund”: Sunday, April 21, 1 - 4 p.m. Carousel Grille, 859 Oakland Beach Avenue, Warwick, RI (401) 921-3430, appetizers, entertainment, raffles, cash bar at : $25. Contact Lisa for tickets at [email protected]

Friday, April 26, 7 - 10 p.m. Diva night at Clayground! $10 admission includes raffles and snacks. Standard studio fees with partial pro-ceeds going towards Jenny’s Lung Fund. Contact Heather at [email protected]. This will be a BYOB event.

You can also make a general donation c/o Heather Loring (Jenny's sister) at 455 Greenbush Rd, East Greenwich RI 02818.

As Jenny’s classmates all know, she is the quintessential team player who generously helps out anyone in need, but rarely asks for help herself. Let’s give her a hand! Melissa Nothnagle

Brown Family Medicine Class Notes

Micah Rosenfield, (‘97) Reports that he and his family are currently sailing around the world on Semester at Sea, where he is the physician for 650 students and 100 faculty, staff, and 'life long learners'. They started in San Diego and end in Bar-celona, with 12 ports in between (They are currently in Kochi, India). Micah reports, “I have been seeing your usual acute illnesses, with a fair amount of mo-tion sickness and travelers diarrhea thrown in, and I am enjoying being the health educator for the close-knit community. I get to give all the warnings of things that they should look out for when in each port (malaria, dengue, rabies, etc.).” Micah and his family will be back in the States in May, and welcome anyone who is traveling to Park City, Utah, to contact them.

Joanne Wilkinson, (‘98) The class of ’98 is planning a 15th reunion celebration in RI the weekend of June 15-16. The details are not final but will probably include a dinner Friday night for '98 grads and then a dinner Saturday night for our class plus others from nearby classes (or faculty) who might want to join us. If anyone is interested in at-tending or being added to the class email list for plan-ning purposes, they should email Tina Duarte at [email protected] or Joanne Wilkinson at [email protected].

Ryan Welter (’02) Ryan remains very proud of his Brown Family Medicine herit-age. Since leaving residency, he has gone on to de-velop Tristan Medical PC (www.tristanmed.com) a multi-specialty group with seven locations in south-eastern Massachusetts. Services include primary care, occupational health, and urgent care with an emphasis on convenience, quality, and patient cen-tered care. Tristan Med plans to add several new locations over the next few years. Although starting a career in Family Practice, for several years doing everything from outpatient and inpatient care, Dr. Welter has since trained extensively as a hair restora-tion surgeon. He has lectured across the globe on emerging techniques and developments in hair resto-ration surgery and has pioneered techniques using growth factors to help stimulate hair growth. His most recent research study uses adipose tissue de-rived stem cells for autologous transfer into the scalp to stimulate hair growth. He and his wife Deana have seven children. He remains active teaching medical students in his office.

Solmaz Behtash ('08) is leaving

Are you interested in having a family medicine resident collaborate with you on a scholarly project?

Residents are required to conduct, evaluate and present findings from a project prior to gradua-tion. Collaboration with practicing physicians on a project can be a fulfilling educational experience for them, and an effective strategy for you to move for-ward on a project you're interested in. If you are cur-rently working on a project or have one in mind, please email [email protected] with the project topic and the way in which you envision in-volving a resident.
