• PROJECT DANIEL•  •  “PROJECT DANIEL” uses 3D Printers to make Prosthetic Arms for children

of war in South Sudan.•  • Just before Thanksgiving 2013, Mick Ebeling returned home from Sudan’s

Nuba Mountains where he set up what is probably the world’s first 3D-printing prosthetic lab and training facility. More to the point of the journey is that Mick managed to give hope and independence back to a kid who, at age 14, had both his arms blown off and considered his life not worth living.

•  • Just prior to the trip, the now 16 year old Daniel was located in a 70,000

person refugee camp in Yida, South Sudan and on November 13, he received version 1 of his left arm.

•  • The locally 3D printed new prosthetic arm enabled him to feed himself for the

first time in two years. With his new “Daniel Hand”, he ate chocolate and operated a computer for the first time.

•  • Please check out:•  • http://www.notimpossiblelabs.com/#!project-daniel/c1imu•  • Also please check out the new LA Times article below:

• “Rebuilding Limbs with Ingenuity and a 3D printer.”• “Led by a film producer with no engineering background, Not Impossible

helps people overcome physical limitations through technology, including making prostheses with 3-D printers.”

• URGENT: HELP SAVE THE WILD TIGER

• “If nature has made anything more beautiful than a tiger then I do not know what it might be,” states Stephen Fry, Actor and Conservationist,

•  “That a creature so strong, so powerful, so perfectly adapted is now so acutely endangered is further testimony (as if it were needed) of the damage we humans do to the wild habitats of the world. Wild tigers are being killed every week and there is a very real possibility that this most magnificent of animals might survive only on film and in the DNA repositories of universities in a very few years. But there is an equally strong possibility that the combined power of people who care can stop and then reverse the decline of the tiger. I urge you to follow the great wildlife artist David Shepherd and his vital campaign.”

•  •  There are only 3,200 tigers left in the wild, we have to act now or this iconic

animal could be extinct in less than 20 years.•  • Protecting existing tiger habitats and the reforestation of degraded habitat may

help buffer the poorest communities in Asia against the impacts of river siltation and flooding, while providing global benefits.

•  • Saving the tiger will help communities and local populations benefit from habitat

resources and tourism.•  • Man is solely responsible for the slaughter of the tiger. In the natural world the

tiger’s only predator is man. We must act to stop the killing and save the tiger in the wild.

• HEAL THE BAY: BE A CHANGING FORCE FOR THE FUTURE AND DEFEND CLEAN WATER

• Please help out for Coastal Cleanup Day; the largest volunteer day on the planet.

• Heal the Bay coordinates more than 50 beach, inland, dive and kayak cleanup sites in L.A. County.

• Learn about the upcoming Coastal Cleanup Day on Sept. 20, 2014 at• www.healthebay.org/ccd

• Last year, more than 11,000 Angelenos removed 24,000 pounds of trash on September 21 for Coastal Cleanup Day, the largest volunteer day on the planet.

• But how much will we clean up THIS year?

• Participate in Coastal Cleanup Day at one of over 50 locations throughout LA on Saturday, September 20, and find out.

• Why is Coastal Cleanup Day important?• Trash in the ocean compromises human and wildlife health, which affects

the livelihoods of millions all over the planet. We all need clean water. • Every little piece of paper, cigarette butt or bottle cap that makes its way

to street sewers ends up in streams or rivers and eventually down to the ocean.

• Oceans are the largest part of our water cycle, generating oxygen and rain necessary to sustain life on Earth.

• How do I participate?• On September 20th, pick a location, gather your friends and family, and

head for the beach!• Watch a video about Coastal Cleanup Day 2013!

• Questions?• Please contact Rey Montaño with any questions regarding Coastal

Cleanup Day in Los Angeles County.• For other California locations, please contact the

California Coastal Commission: 800-COAST4U

• Can’t make Coastal Cleanup Day? Just a $25 donation can help run a cleanup site in your neighborhood.

• OCEAN CONSERVANCY: Clean Beaches - Clean Water

• We have a profound stake in a healthy ocean that is free of trash and marine debris.

• The ocean sustains us with the basic elements of life—it produces half of the oxygen in the air we breathe, and it is an essential part of the water cycle, helping to provide the water we drink.

• The world’s beaches, the frontier of this essential resource, support ocean health. They provide habitat and nesting grounds for important ocean wildlife like sea turtles and sea birds, and they attract vacationers from around the world, helping to sustain complex coastal economies.

• Please check out :http://www.oceanconservancy.org/healthy-ocean/clean-beaches-clean-water/

• Trash Free Seas

• Ocean trash ranks as one of the most serious pollution problems of our time. Much more than an eyesore, trash in the water and on the shore affects the health of people, wildlife and economies. For example, trash in the water:

• injures swimmers and beachgoers;• harms wildlife that eat it or get trapped in its mess;• drives away tourists—and their wallets; and• ensnares boat propellers, a costly navigation hazard.• The good news is we can prevent trashed beaches and debris-filled

water. Ocean Conservancy has a vision of trash free seas, and we’ve been leading the way for more than 25 years.

• Ocean Conservancy is creating a world of trash free seas by:• Organizing and executing the International Coastal Cleanup®, the

world’s largest volunteer effort to clean up our beaches and waterways, with partners around the globe.

• Publicizing data that help the public and the global science community better understand the problem of ocean trash.

• Creating innovative solutions to the ocean trash issue with leaders from the private, public and academic sectors.

• Building a movement to help inspire all of us to stop trash before it starts and live cleaner, healthier lives.

• Join Ocean Conservancy in working every day with partners around the world to fulfill the vision of clean water and healthy beaches.

• We are pleased to announce a generous gift of $10,000 from Edison International to support Homeboy’s new Construction & Industrial Safety Training program. We have learned that in order to earn a living wage and provide for their families after their 18 month period at Homeboy ends, trainees need specialized vocational training and certification. This need is acute: Many trainees lack formal education and some have never held a “real” job prior to walking through Homeboy’s doors.

• Building on our model Solar Panel Training program, we are launching a new training vertical: Construction & Industrial Safety. The 60 participants in this proposed project will gain hard and soft job skills, and affirm their ability to become contributing members of the community.

• “It’s going to these classes that will help you out, or the AA meeting that keeps you going. I have the privilege of seeing people make small gains—getting a tattoo removed or doing what they’re supposed to do. I get a check for working here, but beyond that, my soul gets fulfilled.”, said a former trainee Robert, who now oversees Homeboy’s maintenance crew.” We think about maintenance as just someone with a broom, but maintenance is a way of life,”

• A teenager from India is developing a device that will allow people with speech impairments to communicate, simply by breathing.

• Arsh Shah Dilbagi is a 16-year-old from India who may be revolutionizing the way people with disabilities communicate. He is one of 18 finalists in Google's Global Science Fair for his proposal for Talk.

• Talk is an augmentative and alternative communication device (AAC), which is used for people witht disorders and disabilities that need assistance to speak. Dilbagi's device is said to be both speedy and affordable.

• “Statistics have shown that developmental disabilities are likely to be higher in areas of poverty, and available AAC devices costs thousands of dollars, making them out of reach of the most in need,” his proposal reads.

• Talk works by deciphering breaths and translating them into Morse code. The code then gets translated into one of the device's voice options. Dilbagi believes that the sheer simplicity of this proposal will make the device three times faster than other AAC devices. He is also planning to make it a much more affordable option.

• THANKS For R.O.A.R ing FOR WILD TIGERS LAST MONTH

• Star supporters of the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation’s TIGERTIME Campaign came together this autumn to help raise almost US$30,000 ( £18 ,500) for tiger conservation in Assam. As a partner of Animal Planet’s annual matched giving campaign ‘ROAR’ the charity urged supporters to donate during September to receive matched giving on their donations and, with bonus prizes for the most unique visitors to the site and the loudest ROAR generating $10,000 each it was an amazing international effort.

• With as few as 3,000 tigers left in the wild, the TigerTime Campaign is working hard to fund conservation, education, anti-poaching, community outreach and undercover investigations in India, Thailand and Russia through a growing global social media supporter base.

• HELP THE HOMELESS FOR THE HOLIDAYS

• Christmas brings enjoyment and fun to many but for some it can be the most difficult time of the year.

• Please remember those in need of shelter and comfort during this Season of Giving.

• Here is a true story about a kid in need from Covenant House:• “Jeremiah came to us on Christmas Eve. It was just after dark, and

the shelter was warm and bright with Christmas festivities. As a group of staff, kids and friends gathered together to sing carols, someone noticed a shadow outside the window. It was Jeremiah — cold, hungry and homeless.

• Jeremiah was hesitant to come inside when we invited him. Like many homeless kids, he had learned that many people couldn't be trusted. "How much you charge?" he asked, his face filled with skepticism. "I only have $26 on me and I need it. I have to find a place to stay and something to eat, and I need my money.“

• "I only have $26 on me and I need it. Here," he said. "Take this. They need it more than I do.“

• At first, he didn't believe that we were offering food and shelter without charging him anything. But when he saw our group — filled with kids like him — singing Silent Night together, he gave us a chance. "My momma used to sing that song on Christmas," he said. We found out that Jeremiah’s mother had died six years earlier of breast cancer... and Jeremiah and his little brother Ty had been split up by the foster care system.

• Jeremiah was exhausted, sad and deeply lonely. His eyes were full of pain. But after eating some of our Christmas treats and singing carols and hymns with our kids, he began to relax a bit.

• Later that night, we got some unfortunate news. Someone had broken into a shelter in New Jersey — and they'd stolen all of the Christmas presents. As the staff decided what to do, Jeremiah overheard the conversation. He took the $26 — all of his money in the world — out of his wallet and handed it to us.

• "Here," he said. "Take this. They need it more than I do.“

• The incredible generosity of a kid, like Jeremiah — a kid with so little, who had been through so much — was truly a Christmas miracle.”
