Respect.Excellence.Acceptance.Community.Honesty. Please continue to discuss our values at home and around the school. Our students are working very hard on them and talking about our values in the classrooms and the playgrounds . Parents remember to lead by example and respect our values here at school. Dear Parents and Families: The winter months are really here and the chilly days are taking over. There are a number of children coming to school without jackets and warm clothing. Although our classrooms are heated children still need to wear warm clothing to travel around the school and during outside play. I would like to welcome all of our new students and families to ANPS who have enrolled over the past couple of weeks. There are still new families enrolled for early next term. Please make our new children and families welcome when you see them in the yard. REPORT WRITING WEEK: This week we have had report writing week. A time when teachers compile all of your child’s testing data and work samples and make comparisons against the Victorian Curriculum to write a comprehensive report. This is an extremely busy time for teachers who do a lot of this work at night and weekends. We appreciate their dedication and commitment to ensure you’re well informed about your child’s learning growth. Mrs. Blunt has put together an explanation of the new Victorian Curriculum which we are well ahead of in implementation and the refined Reporting format which you can find later in this newsletter. STAFFING: We sadly say goodbye to Mariana our AUSLAN person and say HELLO to Lesley Dickins who will be working with our students and teachers teaching AUSLAN to our Prep to Grade 4 students. Miss Kehoe is still on leave. We wish her a speedy recovery and miss her very much. Thankyou to Mr. G for the wonderful job he is doing in 3/4 K. FAMILY READING MONTH: I hope you are reading each night and recording the whole families’ reading totals. I am looking forward to seeing the tally sheets to observe who has been reading together as a family. Remember reading is vital to our learning, our imagination and wellbeing so please encourage your children to read every night. Reading calendars are due back on Thursday 2nd June. EDUCATION WEEK: WOW what a fabulous week we had! I spoke about this last week but since then we joined together for one of our famous multicultural lunches. A huge thankyou to all parents who sent food in and even those who popped in to share their lunch with us. This is a great way for all children to participate in our cultures and appreciate the food from other countries. SHARE YOUR THOUGHTS WITH US: Thankyou to the parents who have filled in the “Share Your Thoughts With US” forms. Don’t forget it’s never too late to share you ideas. I would like to thank the 5/6 students who have written letters to me with suggestions of what they would like to see around the school. Some of these ideas are very interesting and some I would love IF there was a never ending bucket on money we could use!!! OUR SCHOOL GATES: My apologies to those students and parent who were locked out of 5th Avenue this morning. I usually unlock the gate on my arrival to school but as I had a very early meeting I thought 7am was far too early for school gates to be left open when there was no one on the premises. This was in keeping with student safety and ensuring ANPS is a safe and secure place for all students. Unfortunately it was not realised that the gate had not been unlocked. This rarely happens and definitely not done on purpose. REMINDERS: Enrolments are now being accepted for 2017 Altona North Primary School Cresser Street, Altona North 3025 P.O. LEGO: Our Prep to 4 teachers attended a Professional Learning session last night using LEGO in schools. They have commented on what a great opportunity this is to bring STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) into our schools. 5/6 Teachers will be attending tonight. See more about this in the newsletter.

BOOK CUBBY: On Monday we had the wonderful opportunity for some of our students to attend a workshop held here at ANPS to work with artists in creating a book about a topic on Hobson’s Bay that they chose and agreed upon. Our children chose to write a book about and then to illustrate the pages. Our students chose to write about “The Future of Our Bay” and the results were wonderful. These will now become a part of the Hob-son’s Bay City Council’s book that is currently being developed. Well done to our budding writers.

CHIRPY CHICKS: Tomorrow the Prep and 1/2 Units will have some very special visitors come to their class-rooms. The Philip Island Education Team will be bringing along some baby penguins for our students to weigh and measure. We will learn about Penguins as part of our Living Things Inquiry Unit, doing activities and talking to the rangers. I can’t wait to see our Chirpy Chicks Program.

Have a great weekend - Robyn Gregson - Principal.

Teachers as Learners

All classroom teachers attended a Professional Learning session after school on Wednesday and Thursday between 4pm - 5:30pm at the LEGO centre at Docklands. Teachers were involved hands on, in learning how to use LEGO as a tool to ignite students’ curiosity and enhance skills in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths). The LEGO Education Packages is a program that encompasses the use of LEGO to build Robots combined with software that enables students to bring their Robots alive with the use of iPads. We will be purchasing LEGO Robotic curriculum packs in support of this program. If you have any questions regarding this program please speak with me. Mrs Lee Blunt Assistant Principal

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT ANPS:

PREP UNIT NEWS:

Wow, what a busy and exciting week we have had! Last week we celebrated Education Week and all the wonderful learning that takes place at Altona North Primary School. We had a great time at the assembly on Monday, where we performed ‘Five Little Monkeys’ in Auslan. It was fantastic to see so many enthusiastic parents participating in our Open Night on Wednesday. On Thursday we had a delicious multicultural lunch, which was a great way to experience foods from the many cultural backgrounds of our students. On Friday we enjoyed an ‘Inquiry Parade’ where we dressed up in costumes relevant to our Inquiry topics – which for the Preps was ‘Living Things’. Below are some of the Prep students’ thoughts about Education Week: “Everyone was wearing their Inquiry costumes.” “When everyone was going around in a circle everyone was clapping and there was music.” “I liked everyone’s costumes.” “Everybody had fun” “I liked how the grade 5/6’s were wearing their cultural costumes”

Be sure to visit the Altona North Primary website regularly to keep up to date with what’s been

happening in the Prep Unit, and to see some extra photos from all of our fantastic learning

experiences! www.altonanorthps.vic.edu.au
