contender the last six seasons, joining the Flyers as the only teams to finish in the top half of the conference every year in that stretch. Only East Side (.756) and Edwardsville (.719) – those teams flipped slots last year with the Fly-ers going 10-2 and the Tigers going 2-10 — have a better winning percentage than the Redbirds’ .671 from a 55-27 SWC record since the 2013-14 season.
Alton begins pursuit of a seventh consecutive upper-division finish in the SWC this week when it opens league play with home dates against O’Fallon on Tuesday and East St. Louis on Friday.
“O’Fallon is going to be a tough matchup,” Morgan said.
“They’re physical. They have some things that we don’t have. But I think our guys are mentally tough and mentally ready. We practice hard, trying to get for the grind.”
The Redbirds hit conference play with a 4-1 record after Saturday’s 71-66 shootout vic-tory over Paducah (Ky.) Tilgh-man. O’Fallon, which won the Alton Tip-Off Tourney to open the season, is 4-1 after Friday’s 53-50 defeat at Collinsville.
Along with Clay, starting as a freshman for Valpo, the Redbirds graduated All-SWC performers in Malik Smith (second team) and Josh Riv-ers (third team). But Alton remains well-stocked for con-tention in the conference with Moory Woods, Andrew Jones and Ky’lun Rivers all back after playing significant roles for last season’s 23-11 squad.
The Redbirds are scoring at a SWC-leading 74.4 points per
game clip through five games, but energy lapses Saturday in Marion concerned their new coach.
“For us to be successful, we have to be gritty,” Morgan said. “We have to be tough. I thought we got a few 50/50
balls. We gave up too many drives. I just think that, in spurts, they were more aggres-sive than us.”
The Redbirds are cast in a cluster of teams in the SWC projected to battle for best of the rest status behind 5-0 Col-linsville. At 6-foot-4 and one of four guards in Alton’s starting lineup, Woods is the tallest in the Redbirds’ first five. He concedes matchup issues will come in the SWC, but embrac-es the 12 nights the league schedule brings.
“We might be small, but we’re scrappy,” Woods said. “And in practice, we get after it, we go after each other and that energy will reflect on Tuesday and Friday nights.”
at 113 and Dillon Dublo (3-1) at 182. Colton Car-lisle (4-1) was third at 160 and Briley Christe-son (7-1) was fifth at 170 for the Eagles.
Fox Tourney – The defending tournament champion Edwardsville Tigers saw their regular-season dual winning streak halted at 53 in a row with a 39-36 loss to eight-time Missouri state champion Whit-field in the title dual at the 46th annual Ron
Sauer Duals in Arnold, Missouri.
Whitfield rallied from an 18-point deficit to hand the 12-1 Tigers their first defeat and deny Edwardsvilel’s first back-to-back tour-ney titles at Fox High School since 2012-13. Edwardsville posted dual wins over Ozark (52-19), Rolla (65-7), Fort Zumwalt West (81-0), Rockwood Mar-quette (81-0), Seckman (40-31) and Oak Forest (52-22) in the Sauer Duals.
Luke Odom went 7-0 at 160 pounds for the Tigers to improve to
12-0. Lloyd Reynolds also went 7-0 at 285, while Dylan Gvillo
(132), Will Zupanci (152) and Blake Moss (220) all went 6-1.

ST. LOUIS (AP) — Auston Matthews let out a sigh and broke into a smile.
The Toronto center snapped a slump with a pair of goals and Zach Hyman also scored twice as the Maple Leafs downed the St. Louis Blues 5-2 on Sat-urday night.
“It’s a huge relief,” Matthews said. “It kind of gets you going, gets your confidence back. I’ve just got to try and get my chances, shoot the puck as much as I can and, eventually, I think it’s going to go in.”
Frederik Andersen made 26 saves for Toronto, which had lost seven in a row against St. Louis.
David Perron and Ivan Barbashev scored for St. Louis, which has lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak.
Jason Spezza capped the Leafs’ four-goal first period outburst with his fourth goal of the season.
Matthews had gone a season-high five games with-out a goal. He broke a 1-1 tie with a wrist shot from the left wing 6:51 into the opening periÅod.
The No. 1 overall choice in the 2016 NHL draft, Matthews had scored just once in seven career games against the Blues. He pushed the lead to 5-1 with a power-play goal midway through the second period, his 18th goal of the season.
Matthews had expressed displeasure with his team’s effort in a 6-1 loss at Philadelphia on Tuesday.
“We just kind of folded, kind of just quit.”Not on this night. The Leafs came out with inten-
sity from the opening faceoff against the defending Stanley Cup champions. They scored four times in the first period, including a three-goal salvo in 6:06.
“We got off to a good start, (Andersen) made some big saves and we got to roll all four lines dur-ing the game,” Matthews said.
Matthews’ outbreak came as no surprise to coach Sheldon Keefe.
“It’s got to feel good for him,” Keefe said. “I had full confidence it was going to fall in for him.”
Hyman scored his second goal of the game by con-verting on a short-handed breakaway for a 3-1 lead. He took a perfect pass from Pierre Engvall as they broke in alone on St. Louis goalie Jordan Binnington.
“As a team, we’re starting to learn how to play with a lead better,” Hyman said. “It’s really impor-tant. As we progress in the season, and games become tighter, playing with a lead and not letting up is really important.”
Andersen recorded his fifth win in his last seven starts to improve to 14-7-3.
“We played with confidence a little bit better,” Andersen said. “We had some pretty good moments and got rewarded with some of our chances.”
Binnington was removed after giving up four goals on 11 shots in the first 9:28. It was the first time he had been pulled since Game 6 of the Stanley Cup Final after surrendering five goals on 19 shots.
The Blues had recorded points in 24 of their first 30 games but were doomed by the slow start.
“I didn’t think we came out that bad, but we made a couple of mistakes that went in our net,” St. Louis coach Craig Berube said.
Blues captain Alex Pietrangelo was disappointed in the effort.
“We just weren’t ready. It happens,” he said.

Defending national champi-ons. Undefeated and owners of a 28-game winning streak, longest in the nation.
The Clemson Tigers are one heck of a No. 3 seed.
Clemson will play second-seeded Ohio State in prime time Dec. 28 in the College Football Playoff semifi-nal at the Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona, looking to make it three national championship in four sea-sons.
“We’re just excited to be in it,” said Clemson coach Dabo Swin-ney, who has spent much of the last month playing up how his team was being disrespected by being relegated to third in the rankings after starting the season No. 1 in the polls.
The other semifinal matches No. 1 LSU and No. 4 Oklahoma.
The selection committee revealed the pairings Sunday and the final four was no surprise. The only mys-tery involved which would be the top seed among three undefeated teams that have been hammering opponents most of the season. The 13-member committee went with Southeastern Conference champion LSU. The Tigers (13-0) will face the Big 12 champion Sooners (12-1) in the Peach Bowl, four hours before the Fiesta Bowl kicks off.
“Anytime, anywhere, anybody, we ready to play,” LSU coach Ed Org-eron said on ESPN.
Clemson opened as a two-point favorite against the Buckeyes. LSU was an 11 1/2-point favorite against the Sooners.
LSU used a convincing victory against Georgia on Saturday to move up. Ohio State (13-0) had been atop the committee’s rankings last week, but the Buckeyes slipped to No. 2 after coming from behind against Wisconsin to win the Big Ten title.
The national championship game is Jan. 13 in New Orleans. The No. 1 seed has yet to win the CFP in five years.
The Tigers and Buckeyes flip-
flopped at No. 1 a couple of times throughout the committee’s six weeks of ranking teams and chair-man Rob Mullens said the debate was similar each week.
“Every weekend one of the them has done something to move above the other,” said Mullens, the athletic director at Oregon. “LSU’s perfor-mance against a No. 4 ranked Geor-gia compelled the committee to put them just ahead of Ohio State.”
The rest of the New Year’s Six bowls were:
— Oregon vs. Wisconsin in the Rose Bowl on Jan. 1.
— Georgia vs. Baylor in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 1.
— Florida vs. Virginia in the Orange Bowl on Dec. 30.
— Memphis vs. Penn State in the Cotton Bowl on Dec. 28.
The final four fell into place thanks to the favorites winning their conference championship games and Utah losing the Pac-12 title game to Oregon. The Utes had been No. 5. That left three undefeated Power Five champions, a fourth with one loss and nobody else with a legiti-mate case to claim a spot.
The intrigue was about the top seed, knowing Clemson was likely locked into No. 3. The Tigers have been mauling opponents for the last two months, but the ACC has not provided Clemson any top-flight competition. Ohio State has five victories against CFP-ranked teams, including Wisconsin twice. LSU has four, all of which were ranked in the top 13. Clemson’s only game against a team that made the committee’s final rankings was its 62-17 victory Saturday against Virginia.
Still, drawing Clemson, which hasn’t lost since the 2017 playoff semifinals against Alabama, rather than an Oklahoma team with five victories by a touchdown or less certainly seems like a tougher task for the Buckeyes. Clemson (13-0) is making its fifth straight playoff appearance, tying Alabama for the most.
LSU is in the playoff for the first time, the only newbie in the field. The Tigers will likely bring the Heisman Trophy winner with them.
Quarterback Joe Burrow capped a record-breaking season by throwing four more touchdown passes against Georgia in the SEC championship.
Ohio State is making its third playoff appearance and first since 2016 after just missing out the pre-vious two seasons. The Buckeyes won the first playoff championship in 2014. Their last appearance came after the 2016 season, when they were shut out by Clemson in the semifinal at the Fiesta Bowl. That was all under coach Urban Meyer. Now Ryan Day leads the Buckeyes, and in his first season as Meyer’s successor the Buckeyes have won each of their games by double-digit margins.
‘’Do I feel we should have been the 1 seed? Yeah. But LSU’s done an unbelievable job and what Joe (Bur-row) has done,” Day said. “At the end of the day, you have to go beat the best to win a national champi-onship, and Clemson certainly is that.”
The Tigers are 3-0 all-time against Ohio State, all in the postseason. The Buckeyes enter the playoff with a 19-game winning streak, second only to Clemson’s streak.
“We’ve played them a couple times, and this is easily the most talented and most complete Ohio State team that we’ve played,” Swin-ney said.
Oklahoma is in the playoff for the fourth time, but has yet to win a game. This will be the third con-secutive year the Sooners face an SEC team.
Oklahoma and LSU have split two previous meetings: The Sooners won the 1950 Sugar Bowl and the Tigers won the BCS championship game at the Sugar Bowl in 2004.
Former Alabama quarterback Jalen Hurts is back in the playoff for the fourth straight year, this time with the Sooners after going three times with the Crimson Tide. Hurts follows Heisman winners Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray as quar-terback transfers to find success in coach Lincoln Riley’s offense.
LSU and Ohio State are also led by transfer quarterbacks. Burrow started his career at Ohio State before switching schools in 2018. Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields was at Georgia last season.
Clemson quarterback Trevor Law-rence led the Tigers to a national championship as a freshman last season, the first time since 1985 that happened.
