This raises many questions, How will they replace the faulty units? Do they have qualified personnel to do the work? How long will it take? What will the end user do? When/how will they be notified? Will the manufacture be able to track down all the units? Do they have all actual addresses? The cause of this problem is not just about the quality of products, but the infrastructure in place to tackle such issues.

Not all heat pumps are the same.Recently announced in the press, a manufacturer has recalled all their packaged heat pumps.

Households create a quarter of all emissions, so as an incentive to purchase greener alternatives there is a reduced rate VAT on energy saving materials and this includes Air Source Heat Pumps (both heating and cooling). A dedicated air source heat pump is estimated to save in excess of two tonnes of carbon emissions per year.

What is covered under residential?

• Houses, flats or other dwellings

• Children’s home

• Hospices

• Homes providing care for the elderly, disabled or people who suffer drug or alcohol dependency or mental disorder

• Institutions that are the sole residence for at least 90% of their occupants

• Monasteries, nunneries and similar religious accommodation

• School and universaity residential accomodation

• Self catering holiday accomodation

• Permanently sited caravans (7m plus long or 2.3m wide)

• Permanent house boats (subject to council tax)

How the reduced rate VAT works.

Equipment and installation costs for a qualifying project must be on the same invoice to benefit from the reduced rate of VAT. Therefore the contractor will purchase an Air Source Heat Pump at the standard 17.5%, but will sell to the qualifying customer at the reduced rate of 5% VAT.

The ‘input tax’ (VAT paid by the supplier when the purchase is made) will be more than the ‘output tax’ (VAT you charged) and the difference between the two can be reclaimed from Customs and Excise via the normal quartlerly VAT return.

Available for anyone within privately rented or owned property, looking at replacing the existing G rated* or worse, ‘working’ boiler with an A rated boiler or renewable micro generation technology, such as the Daikin Altherma system from Space Air.

*How do I know if it is G rated or worse?

If your boiler has a pilot light it is very likely to be G-rated or if it is gas-fired and over 15 years old or

oil-fired and over 20 years old.

In being awarded the EU Eco-label, Altherma manufactured by Daikin Europe

NV, and supplied by Space Air, was assessed in a range of categories:

• heating efficiency

• refrigerant global warming potential (GWP)

• noise

• absence of RoHS substances

• training

• documentation

• 10 years availability of spare parts

• detailed information at point of sale.

w w w. s p a c e a i r s o l u t i o n s . c o . u k16/06/2009

LCBP Phase 1, which provides grants for the installation of microgeneration technologies, including

air source heat pumps, for households, community organisations, public, private and non-profit

sectors. It will receive an additional £10 million of funding and the programme is being extended

from July 2010 to April 2011.

Under LCBP Phase 1, air source heat pumps can qualify for grants of up to £900 or 30% of the total

installation cost (whichever is the lesser amount).

Air Source Heat Pumps now on the

LCBP technology list

The additional £35 million of funding has been allocated to LCBP Phase 2 - but also, the range of

qualifying technologies has been extended to include air source heat pumps (originally missed of the list!).

LCBP Phase 2 has now been extended to April 2011. The extra funding now means that the

programme can provide funding of up to £200,000 or 50% of the installed cost of approved

technologies for charitable organisations, community groups, the public sector, including schools,

hospitals and housing associations.

• To qualify for LCBP grant support the products and the installer companies must be registered on the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS).

• The Altherma air source, air to water heat pump, by Daikin is MCS certified: MCS HP0006.

• The Low Carbon Building Programme is managed by the Energy Saving Trust.

• Other grant support schemes e.g. for the application of Air Source Heat Pumps, are also offered by some energy providers and through local authority initiatives, it is always worth making the enquiry.

The Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS) is an independent scheme in two parts, that certifies

microgeneration (1)products and (2)installers in accordance with consistent standards.

It is designed to evaluate microgeneration (1)products and (2)installers against robust criteria providing

greater protection for consumers.

• MCS certified products may qualify for grant support under the LCBP scheme (low carbon building programme).

• Space Air operates with a network of installers trained to manufacturer’s standards and with a Space Air / Daikin approval certificate. All Altherma installers must carry this certificate to

validate the manufacturer’s standard warranty.

Europe Recognises Heat Pumps as Renewable Energy Technology

w w w. s p a c e a i r s o l u t i o n s . c o . u k01/01/2009

Space Air has been actively involved with the HPA in arguing the case for aerothermal and hydrothermal

energy and believes this important and ground breaking decision will lead to wider recognition of

the cost effective environmental benefits that can be achieved, particularly through the specification

and use of air source air-to-air and air-to-water heat pumps in both commercial and residential

applications.

• The EU definition of Renewable Energy Sources was expanded to include aerothermal and hydrothermal energy.

• For the first time under EU legislation, heat pumps are now recognised as a renewable energy technology, alongside wind turbines and solar panels.

• It was also agreed that Member States shall strengthen their national renewable action plans.
