carnal for everything which thesinful and ungodly have done, andcommitted against him.a

CHAPTER 31All who are in the heavens knowwhat is transacted there.

2They know that the heavenly lumi-naries change not their paths; thateach rises and sets regularly,every one at its proper period,without transgressing the com-mands, which they have received.They behold the earth, and under-stand what is there transacted,from the beginning to the end ofit.

3They see that every work of Godis invariable in the period of itsappearance. They behold summerand winter: perceiving that thewhole earth is full of water; andthat the cloud, the dew, and therain refresh it.

CHAPTER 41They consider and behold everytree, how it appears to wither, andevery leaf to fall off, except offourteen trees, which are notdeciduous; which wait from theold, to the appearance of the newleaf, for two or three winters.

CHAPTER 51Again they consider the days ofsummer, that the sun is upon it at

its very beginning; while you seekfor a covered and shady spot onaccount of the burning sun; whilethe earth is scorched up with fer-vid heat, and you become incapa-ble of walking either upon theground or upon the rocks in con-sequence of that heat.

CHAPTER 61They consider how the trees, whenthey put forth their green leaves,become covered, and producefruit; understanding everything,and knowing that He who livesfor ever does all these things foryou:

2That the works at the beginning ofevery existing year, that all hisworks, are subservient to him, andi n v a r i a b l e ; y e t a s G o d h a sappoin ted , so are a l l th ingsbrought to pass.

3They see, too, how the seas andthe rivers together complete theirrespective operations:

4But you endure not patiently, norfulfill the commandments of theLord; but you transgress andcalumniate his greatness; andmalignant are the words in yourpolluted mouths against his Maj-esty.

5You withered in heart, no peaceshall be to you!

shall be multiplied, and you shallnot obtain mercy.

7In those days shall you resignyour peace with the eternal male-dictions of all the righteous, andsinners shall perpetually execrateyou;

8Shal l execrate you with theungodly.

9The elect shall possess light, joy,and peace; and they shall inheritthe earth.

10But you, you unholy, shall beaccursed.

11Then shall wisdom be given tothe elect, all of whom shall live,and not again transgress by impi-ety or pride; but shall humblethemselves, possessing prudence,and shall not repeat transgression.

12They shall not be condemned thewhole period of their lives, not diein torment and indignation; butthe sum of their days shall becompleted, and they shall growold in peace; while the years oftheir happiness shall be multipliedwith joy, and with peace, for ever,the whole duration of their exist-ence.

CHAPTER 71It happened after the sons of menhad multiplied in those days, thatdaughters were born to them, ele-gant and beautiful.

2And when the angels,a the sons ofheaven, beheld them, they becameenamoured of them, saying to

each other, Come, let us select forourselves wives from the progenyof men, and let us beget children.

3Then their leader Samyaza said tothem; I fear that you may perhapsbe indisposed to the performanceof this enterprise;

4And that I alone shall suffer for sogrievous a crime.

5But they answered him and said;We all swear;

6And bind ourselves by mutualexecrations, that we will notchange our intention, but executeour projected undertaking.

7Then they swore all together, andall bound themselves by mutualexecrations. Their whole numberwas two hundred, who descendedupon Ardis,b which is the top ofmount Armon.

8That mountain therefore wascalled Armon, because they hadsworn upon it,c and bound them-selves by mutual execrations.

leader, Urakabarameel, Akibeel,Tamiel, Ramuel, Danel, Azkeel,S a r a k n y a l , A s a e l , A r m e r s ,Batraal, Anane, Zavebe, Sam-saveel, Ertael, Turel, Yomyael,Arazyal. These were the prefectsof the two hundred angels, and theremainder were all with them.a

10Then they took wives, eachchoosing for himself; whom theybegan to approach, and withwhom they cohabited; teachingthem sorcery, incantations, andthe dividing of roots and trees.

11And the women conceivingbrought forth giants,b

12Whose stature was each threehundred cubits. These devouredall which the labor of men pro-duced; until it became impossibleto feed them;

13When they turned themselvesagainst men, in order to devourthem;

14And began to injure birds, beasts,reptiles, and fishes, to eat theirflesh one after another,c and todrink their blood.

15Then the earth reproved theunrighteous.

CHAPTER 81Moreover Azazyel taught men tomake swords, knives, shields,breastplates, the fabrication ofmirrors, and the workmanship ofbracelets and ornaments, the useof paint, the beautifying of theeyebrows, the use of stones ofevery valuable and select kind,and all sorts of dyes, so that theworld became altered.

2Impiety increased; fornicationmultiplied; and they transgressedand corrupted all their ways.

3Amazarak taught all the sorcerers,and dividers of roots:

4Armers taught the solution of sor-cery;

5Barkayal taught the observers ofthe stars,d

9And men, being destroyed, criedout; and their voice reached toheaven.

CHAPTER 91Then Michae l and Gabr i e l ,Raphael , Suryal , and Ur ie l ,looked down from heaven, andsaw the quantity of blood whichwas shed on earth, and all theiniquity which was done upon it,and said one to another, It is thevoice of their cries;

2The earth deprived of her childrenhas cried even to the gate ofheaven.

3And now to you, O you holy oneof heaven, the souls of men com-plain, saying, Obtain Justice forus witha the Most High. Thenthey said to their Lord, the King,You are Lord of lords, God ofgods, King of kings. The throneof your glory is for ever and ever,and for ever and ever is yourname sanctified and glorified.You are blessed and glorified.

4You have made all things; youpossess power over all things; andall things are open and manifest

before you. You behold all things,and nothing can be concealedfrom you.

5You have seen what Azazyel hasdone, how he has taught everyspecies of iniquity upon earth, andhas disclosed to the world all thesecret things which are done inthe heavens.

6Samyaza also has taught sorcery,to whom you have given authorityover those who are associatedw i t h h i m . T h e y h av e g o n etogether to the daughters of men;have lain with them; have becomepolluted;

7And have discovered crimesb tothem.

14What on account of these thingsought we to do to them?

CHAPTER 101Then the Most High, the Greatand Holy One spoke,

2And sent Arsayalalyura to the sonof Lamech,

3Saying, Say to him in my name,Conceal yourself.

4Then explain to him the consum-mation which is about to takeplace; for all the earth shall per-ish; the waters of a deluge shallcome over the whole earth, and allthings which are in it shall bedestroyed.

5And now teach him how he mayescape, and how his seed mayremain in all the earth.

6Again the Lord said to Raphael,Bind Azazyel hand and foot; casthim into darkness; and openingthe desert which is in Dudael, casthim in there.

7Throw upon him hurled andpointed stones, covering him withdarkness;

8There shall he remain for ever;cover his face, that he may not seethe light.

9And in the great day of judgmentlet him be cast into the fire.

10Restore the earth, which theange l s have cor rup ted ; and

announce life to it, that I mayrevive it.

11All the sons of men shall not per-ish in consequence of everysecret, by which the Watchershave destroyed, and which theyhave taught, their offspring.

12All the earth has been corruptedby the effects of the teaching ofAzazyel. To him therefore ascribethe whole crime.

13To Gabriel also the Lord said, Goto the biters,b to the reprobates, tothe children of fornication; anddestroy the children of fornica-tion, the offspring of the Watch-ers, from among men; bring themforth, and excite them one againstanother. Let them per ish bymutual slaughter; for length ofdays shall not be theirs.

14They shall all entreat you, buttheir fathers shall not obtain theirwishes respecting them; for theyshall hope for eternal life, and thatthey may live, each of them, fivehundred years.

15To Michael likewise the Lordsaid, Go and announce his crimeto Samyaza, and to the others whoare with him, who have beenassociated with women, that theymight be polluted with all theirimpurity. And when all their sonsshall be slain, when they shall see

the perdition of their beloved,bind them for seventy genera-tions underneath the earth, even tothe day of judgment, and of con-summation, until the judgment,the effect of which will last forever, be completed.

16Then shall they be taken awayinto the lowest depths of the firein torments; and in confinementshall they be shut up for ever.

17Immediately after this shall he,atogether with them, burn and per-ish; they shall be bound until theconsummation of many genera-tions.

18Destroy all the souls addicted todalliance,b and the offspring ofthe Watchers, for they have tyran-nized over mankind.

19Let every oppressor perish fromthe face of the earth;

2 0 L e t e v e r y e v i l w o r k b edestroyed;

21The plant of righteousness and ofrectitude appear, and its producebecome a blessing.

22Righteousness and rectitude shallbe for ever planted with delight.

23And then shall all the saints givethanks, and live until they havebegotten a thousand children,while the whole period of theiryouth, and their sabbaths shall be

completed in peace. In those daysall the earth shall be cultivated inrighteousness; it shall be whollyplanted with trees, and filled withbenediction; every tree of delightshall be planted in it.

24In it shall vines be planted; andthe vine which shall be planted init shall yield fruit to satiety; everyseed, which shall be sown in it,shall produce for one measure athousand; and one measure ofolives shall produce ten presses ofoil.

25Purify the earth from all oppres-sion, from all injustice, from allcrime, from all impiety, and fromall the pollution which is commit-ted upon it. Exterminate themfrom the earth.

26Then shall all the children ofmen be righteous, and all nationsshall pay me divine honours, andbless me; and all shall adore me.

27The earth shall be cleansed fromall corruption, from every crime,from all punishment, and from allsuffering; neither will I again senda deluge upon it from generationto generation for ever.

28In those days I will open the trea-sures of blessing which are inheaven, that I may cause them todescend upon earth, and upon allthe works and labour of man.

29Peace and equity shall associatewith the sons of men all the daysof the world, in every generationof it.

CHAPTER 121Before all these things Enoch wasconcealed; nor did any one of thesons of men know where he wasconcealed, where he had been,and what had happened.

2He was wholly engaged with theholy ones, and with the Watchersin his days.

3I, Enoch, was blessing the greatLord and King of peace.

4And behold the Watchers calledme Enoch the scribe.

5Then the Lord said to me: Enoch,scribe of righteousness, go tell theWatchers of heaven, who havedeserted the lofty sky, and theirholy everlasting station, who havebeen polluted with women.

6And have done as the sons of mendo, by taking to themselves wives,and who have been greatly cor-rupted on the earth;

7That on the earth they shall neverobtain peace and remission of sin.For they shall not rejoice in theiroffspring; they shall behold theslaughter of their beloved; shalllament for the destruction of theirsons; and shall petition for ever;but shall not obtain mercy andpeace.

CHAPTER 131Then Enoch, passing on, said toAzazyel: You shalt not obtain

peace. A great sentence is goneforth against you. He shall bindyou;

2Neither shall relief, mercy, andsupplication be yours, on accountof the oppression which you havetaught;

3And on account of every act ofblasphemy, tyranny, and sin,which you have discovered to thechildren of men.

4Then departing from him I spoketo them all together;

5And they all became terrified, andtrembled;

6Beseeching me to write for them amemorial of supplication, thatthey might obtain forgiveness;and that I might make the memo-rial of their prayer ascend upb e f o r e t h e G o d o f h e a v e n ;because they could not them-selves thenceforwards addresshim, nor raise up their eyes toheaven on account of the dis-graceful offence for which theywere judged.

7Then I wrote a memorial of theirprayer and supplications, for theirspirits, for everything which theyhad done, and for the subject oftheir entreaty, that they mightobtain remission and rest.

8Proceeding on, I continued overthe waters of Danbadan,a which ison the right to the west of Armon,

reading the memorial of theirprayer, until I fell asleep.

9And behold a dream came to me,and visions appeared above me. Ifell down and saw a vision ofpunishment, that I might relate itto the sons of heaven, and reprovethem. When I awoke I went tothem. All being collected togetherstood weeping in Oubelseyael,which is situated between Libanosand Seneser,a with their facesveiled.

10I related in their presence all thevisions which I had seen, and mydream;

11And began to utter these wordsof righteousness, reproving theWatchers of heaven.

CHAPTER 141This is the book of the words ofrighteousness, and of the reproofof the Watchers, who belong tothe world,b according to thatwhich He, who is holy and great,commanded in the vision. I per-ceived in my dream, that I wasnow speaking with a tongue offlesh, and with my breath, whichthe Mighty One has put into themouth of men, that they mightconverse with it,

2And understand with the heart. Ashe has created and given to menthe power of comprehending theword of understanding, so has hecreated and given to me the powerof reproving the Watchers, the off-spring of heaven. I have writtenyour petition; and in my vision ithas been shown me, that what yourequest will not be granted you aslong as the world endures.

3Judgment has been passed uponyou: your request will not begranted you.

4From this time forward, nevershall you ascend into heaven; Hehas said, that on the earth He willbind you, as long as the worldendures.

5But before these things you shallbehold the destruction of yourbeloved sons; you shall not pos-sess them, but they shall fallbefore you by the sword.

6Neither shall you entreat for them,not for yourselves;

7But you shall weep and supplicatein silence. The words of the bookwhich I wrote.c

8A vision thus appeared to me.9Behold, in that vision clouds anda mist invited me; agitated starsand flashes of lightning impelled

and pressed me forwards, whilewinds in the vision assisted myflight, accelerating my progress.

1 0 They e l eva ted me a lo f t t oheaven. I proceeded, unt i l Iarrived at a wall built with stonesof crystal. A vibrating flamea sur-rounded it, which began to strikeme with terror.

11 In to th is v ib ra t ing f lame Ientered;

12And drew nigh to a spacious hab-itation built also with stones ofcrystal. Its walls too, as well aspavement, were formed withstones of crystal, and crystal like-wise was the ground. Its roof hadthe appearance of agitated starsand flashes of lightning; andamong them were cherubim offire in a stormy sky.b A flameburned around its walls; and itsportal blazed with fire. When Ientered into this dwelling, it washot as fire and cold as ice. Notrace of delight or of life wasthere. Terror overwhelmed me,and a fearful shaking seized me.

13Violently agitated and trem-bling, I fell upon my face. In thevision I looked.

14And behold there was anotherhabitation more spacious than theformer, every entrance to which

was open before me, erected inthe midst of a vibrating flame.

15So greatly did it excel in allpoints, in glory, in magnificence,and in magnitude, that it is impos-sible to describe to you either thesplendour or the extent of it.

16Its floor was on fire; above werelightnings and agitated stars,while its roof exhibited a blazingfire.

17Attentively I surveyed it, andsaw that it contained an exaltedthrone;

18The appearance of which waslike that of frost; while its circum-ference resembled the orb of thebrilliant sun; and there was thevoice of the cherubim.

19From underneath this mightythrone rivers of flaming fireissued.

20To look upon it was impossible.21One great in glory sat upon it:22Whose robe was brighter thanthe sun, and whiter than snow.

23No angel was capable of pene-trating to view the face of Him,the Glorious and the Effulgent;nor could any mortal behold Him.A fire was flaming around Him.

24A fire also of great extent contin-ued to rise up before Him; so thatnot one of those who surroundedHim was capable of approachingHim, among the myriads of myri-adsc who were before Him. ToHim holy consultation was need-less. Yet did not the sanctified,

who were near Him, depart farfrom Him either by night or byday; nor were they removed fromHim. I also was so far advanced,with a veil on my face, and trem-bling. Then the Lord with his ownm o u t h c a l l e d m e , s a y i n g ,Approach hither, Enoch, at myholy word.

25And He raised me up, makingm e d ra w n e a r e v e n t o t h eentrance. My eye was directed tothe ground.

CHAPTER 151Then addressing me, He spokeand said, Hear, neither be afraid,O righteous Enoch, you scribe ofrighteousness: approach hither,and hear my voice. Go, say to theWatchers of heaven, who havesent you to pray for them, Youought to pray for men, and notmen for you.

2Wherefore have you forsaken thelofty and holy heaven, whichendures for ever, and have lainwith women; have defiled your-selves with the daughters of men;have taken to yourselves wives;have acted like the sons of theearth, and have begotten an impi-ous offspring?a

3You being spiritual, holy, and pos-sessing a life which is eternal,

have polluted yourselves withwomen; have begotten in carnalblood; have lusted in the blood ofmen; and have done as those whoare flesh and blood do.

4These however die and perish.5Therefore have I given to themwives, that they might cohabitwith them; that sons might beborn of them; and that this mightbe transacted upon earth.

6But you from the beginning weremade spiritual, possessing a lifewhich is eternal, and not subjectto death for ever.

7Therefore I made not wives foryou, because, being spiritual, yourdwelling is in heaven.

8Now the giants, who have beenborn of spirit and of flesh, shall becalled upon earth evil spirits, andon earth shall be their habitation.Evil spirits shall proceed fromtheir flesh, because they were cre-ated from above; from the holyWatchers was their beginning andprimary foundation. Evil spiritsshall they be upon earth, and thespirits of the wicked shall they becalled. The habitation of the spir-its of heaven shall be in heaven;but upon earth shall be the habita-tion of terrestrial spirits, who areborn on earth.b

10They shall cause lamentation. Nofood shall they eat; and they shallbe thirsty; they shall be con-cealed, and shall nota rise upagainst the sons of men, andagainst women; for they comeforth during the days of slaughterand destruction.

CHAPTER 161And as to the death of the giants,wheresoever their spirits departfrom their bodies, let their flesh,that which is perishable, be with-out judgment.b Thus shall theyperish, until the day of the greatconsummation of the great world.A destruction shall take place ofthe Watchers and the impious.

2And now to the Watchers, whohave sent you to pray for them,who in the beginning were inheaven,

3Say, In heaven have you been;secret things, however, have not

been manifested to you; yet haveyou known a reprobated mystery.

4And this you have related towomen in the hardness of yourheart, and by that mystery havewomen and mankind multipliedevils upon the earth.

CHAPTER 171They raised me up into a certainplace , where there wasc theappearance of a burning fire; andwhen they pleased they assumedthe likeness of men.

2They carried me to a lofty spot, toa mountain, the top of whichreach to heaven.

3And I beheld the receptacles oflight and of thunder at the extrem-ities of the place, where it wasdeepest. There was a bow of fire,and arrows in their quiver, asword of fire, and every species oflightning.

4Then they elevated me to a bab-bling stream,d and to a fire in thewest, which received all the set-ting of the sun. I came to a riverof fire, which flowed like water,and emptied itself into the greatsea westwards.

son with yourself, and anxiouslyinquire? These are those of thestars which have transgressed thecommandment of the most highGod; and are here bound, until theinfinite number of the days oftheir crimes be completed.

4From there I afterwards passed onto another terrific place;

5Where I beheld the operation of agreat fire blazing and glittering, inthe midst of which there was adivision. Columns of fire strug-gled together to the end of theabyss, and deep was their descent.But neither its measurement normagnitude was I able to discover;neither could I perceive its origin.Then I exclaimed, How terrible isthis place, and how difficult toexplore!

6Uriel, one of the holy angels whowas with me, answered and said:Enoch, why are you alarmed andamazed at this terrific place, at thesight of this place of suffering?This, he said, is the prison of theangels; and here they are kept forever.

CHAPTER 221From there I proceeded to anotherspot, where I saw on the west agreat and lofty mountain, a strongrock, and four delightful places.

2Internally it was deep, capacious,and very smooth; as smooth as ifit had been rolled over: it wasboth deep and dark to behold.

3Then Raphael, one of the holya n g e l s w h o w e r e w i t h m e ,answered and said, These are thedelightful places where the spirits,the souls of the dead, will be col-l e c t e d ; f o r t h em w e r e t h e yformed; and here will be collectedall the souls of the sons of men.

4These places, in which they dwell,shall they occupy until the day ofj u d g m e n t , a n d u n t i l t h e i rappointed period.

5Their appointed period will belong, even until the great judg-ment. And I saw the spirits of thesons of men who were dead; andtheir voices reached to heaven,while they were accusing.

6Then I inquired of Raphael, anangel who was with me, and said,Whose spirit is that, the voice ofwhich reaches to heaven, andaccuses?

7He answered, saying, This is thespirit of Abel who was slain byCain his brother; and who willaccuse that brother, until his seedbe destroyed from the face of theearth;

8Until his seed perish from theseed of the human race.

9At that time therefore I inquiredrespecting him, and respecting thegeneral judgment, saying, Why isone separated from another? Heanswered, Three separations havebeen made between the spirits ofthe dead, and thus have the spiritsof the righteous been separated.

10Namely, by a chasm, by water,and by light above it.

11And in the same way likewiseare sinners separated when theydie, and are buried in the earth;judgment not overtaking them intheir lifetime.

12Here their souls are separated.Moreover, abundant is their suf-fering until the time of the greatjudgment, the castigation, and thetorment of those who eternallyexecrate, whose souls are pun-ished and bound there for ever.

13And thus has it been from thebeginning of the world. Thus hasthere existed a separation betweenthe souls of those who utter com-plaints, and of those who watchfor their destruction, to slaughterthem in the day of sinners.

14A receptacle of this sort has beenformed for the souls of unrigh-teous men, and of sinners; ofthose who have completed crime,and associated with the impious,whom they resemble. Their soulsshall not be annihilated in the dayof judgment, neither shall theyarise from this place. Then Iblessed God,

15And said, Blessed by my Lord,the Lord of glory and of righ-teousness, who reigns over all forever and for ever.

CHAPTER 231From there I went to anotherplace, towards the west, unto theextremities of the earth.

2Where I beheld a fire blazing andrunning along without cessation,which intermitted its course nei-ther by day nor by night; but con-tinued always the same.

3I inquired, saying, What is this,which never ceases?

4Then Raguel, one of the holya n g e l s w h o w e r e w i t h m e ,answered,

5And said, This blazing fire, whichyou behold running towards thewest, is that of all the luminariesof heaven.

CHAPTER 241I went from there to another place,and saw a mountain of fire flash-ing both by day and night. I pro-ceeded towards it; and perceivedseven splendid mountains, whichwere all different from each other.

2Their stones were brilliant andbeautiful; all were brilliant andsplendid to behold; and beautifulwas their surface. Three moun-tains were towards the east, andstrengthened by being placed oneupon another; and three weretowards the south, strengthened ina similar manner. There were like-wise deep valleys, which did notapproach each other. And the sev-enth mountain was in the midst ofthem. In length they all resembled

the seat of a throne, and odorifer-ous trees surrounded them.

3Among these there was a tree ofan unceasing smell; nor of thosewhich were in Eden was there oneof all the fragrant trees whichsmelt like this. Its leaf, its flower,and its bark never withered, andits fruit was beautiful.

4Its fruit resembled the cluster ofthe palm. I exclaimed, Behold!This tree is goodly in aspect,pleasing in its leaf, and the sightof its fruit is delightful to the eye.Then Michael, one of the holy andglorious angels who were withme, and one who presided overthem, answered,

5And said: Enoch, why do youinquire respecting the odour ofthis tree?

6Why are you inquisitive to knowit?

7Then I, Enoch, replied to him, andsaid, Concerning everything I amdesirous of instruction, but partic-ularly concerning this tree.

8He answered me, saying, Thatmountain which you behold, theextent of whose head resemblesthe seat of the Lord, will be theseat on which shall sit the holyand great Lord of glory, the ever-lasting King, when he shall comeand descend to visit the earth withgoodness.

9And that tree of an agreeablesmell, not one of carnal odor,there shall be no power to touch,

until the period of the great judg-ment. When all shall be punishedand consumed for ever, this shallbe bestowed on the righteous andhumble. The fruit of the tree shallbe given to the elect. For towardsthe north life shall be planted inthe holy place, towards the habita-tion of the everlasting King.

10Then shall they greatly rejoiceand exult in the Holy One. Thesweet odor shall enter into theirbones; and they shall live a longlife on the earth as your forefa-thers have lived; neither in theirdays shall sorrow, distress, trou-ble, and punishment afflict them.

11And I blessed the Lord of glory,the everlasting King, because Hehas prepared this tree for thesaints, formed it, and declared thatHe would give it to them.

CHAPTER 251From there I proceeded to themiddle of the earth, and beheld ahappy and fertile spot, which con-ta ined branches cont inual lysprouting from the trees whichwere planted in it. There I saw aholy mountain, and underneath itwater on the eastern side, whichflowed towards the south. I sawalso on the east another mountainas high as that; and between themthere were deep, but not wide val-leys.

3There was a valley, but not a wideone, below it; and in the midst ofthem were other deep and dry val-leys towards the extremity of thethree. All these valleys, whichwere deep, but not side, consistedof a strong rock, with a tree whichwas planted in them. And I won-dered at the rock and at the val-leys, being extremely surprised.

CHAPTER 261Then I said, What means thisblessed land, all these lofty trees,and the accursed valley betweenthem?

2Then Uriel, one of the holy angelswho were with me, replied, Thisvalley is the accursed of theaccursed for ever. Here shall becollected all who utter with theirmouths unbecoming languageagainst God, and speak harshthings of His glory. Here shallthey be collected. Here shall betheir territory.

3In the latter days an example ofjudgment shall be made of themin righteousness before the saints;while those who have receivedmercy shall for ever, all theirdays, bless God, the everlastingKing.

4And at the period of judgmentshall they bless Him for hismercy, as He has distributed it tot h e m . T h e n I b l e s s e d G o d ,addressing myself to Him, and

making mention, as was meet, ofHis greatness.

CHAPTER 271From there I proceeded towardsthe east to the middle of themountain in the desert, the levelsurface only of which I perceived.

2It was full of trees of the seedalluded to; and water leaped downupon it.

3There appeared a cataract com-posed as of many cataracts bothtowards the west and towards theeast. Upon one side were trees;upon the other water and dew.

CHAPTER 281Then I went to another place fromthe desert; towards the east of thatm o u n t a i n w h i c h I h a dapproached.

2There I beheld choice trees,a par-ticularly, those which produce thesweet-smelling opiate, frankin-cense and myrrh; and trees unliketo each other.

3And over it, above them, was theelevation of the eastern mountainat no great distance.

CHAPTER 311After these things, surveying theentrances of the north, above themountains, I perceived sevenmountains replete with pure nard,odoriferous trees, cinnamon andpapyrus.

2From there I passed on above thesummits of those mountains tosome distance eastwards, andwent over the Erythraean sea.e

And when I was advanced farbeyond it, I passed along abovethe angel Zateel, and arrived atthe garden of righteousness. Inthis garden I beheld, among othertrees, some which were numer-ous and large, and which flour-ished there.

3Their fragrance was agreeable andpowerful, and their appearanceboth varied and elegant. The treeof knowledge also was there, ofwhich if any one eats, he becomesendowed with great wisdom.

4It was like a species of the tama-rind tree, bearing fruit whichresembled grapes extremely fine;and its fragrance extended to ac o n s i d e r a b l e d i s t a n c e . Iexclaimed, How beautiful is thistree, and how delightful is itsappearance!

5Then holy Raphael, an angel whowas with me, answered and said,This is the tree of knowledge, ofwhich your ancient father andyour aged mother ate, who werebefore you; and who, obtainingknowledge, their eyes beingopened, and knowing themselvesto be naked, were expelled fromthe garden.

their countenances and forms, aswell as with notes of differentsounds.

2To the east of these beasts I per-ceived the extremities of theearth, where heaven ceased. Thegates of heaven stood open, and Ibeheld the celestial stars comeforth. I numbered them as theyproceeded out of the gate, andwrote them all down, as theycame out one by one according totheir number. I wrote down theirnames altogether, their times andtheir seasons, as the angel Uriel,who was with me, pointed themout to me.

3He showed them all to me, andwrote down an account of them.

4He also wrote down for me theirnames, their regulations, and theiroperations.

CHAPTER 331From there I advanced on towardsthe north, to the extremities of theearth.

2And there I saw a great and glori-ous wonder at the extremities ofthe whole earth.

3I saw there heavenly gates open-ing into heaven; three of them dis-tinctly separated. The northernwinds proceeded from them,blowing cold, hail, frost, snow,dew, and rain.

4From one of the gates they blewmildly; but when they blew fromthe two other gates, it was with

violence and force. They blewover the earth strongly.

CHAPTER 341From there I went to the extremi-ties of the world westwards;

2Where I perceived three gatesopen, as I had seen in the north;the gates and passages throughthem being of equal magnitude.

CHAPTER 351Then I proceeded to the extremi-ties of the earth southwards;where I saw three gates open tothe south, from which issued dew,rain, and wind.

2From there I went to the extremi-ties of heaven eastwards; where Isaw three heavenly gates open tothe east, which had smaller gateswithin them. Through each ofthese small gates the stars ofheaven passed on, and proceededtowards the west by a path whichwas seen by them, and that atevery period of their appearance.

3When I beheld them, I blessed;e v e r y t i m e i n w h i c h t h e yappeared, I blessed the Lord ofglory, who had made those greatand splendid signs, that theymight display the magnificence ofhis works to angels and to thesouls of men; and that these mightglorify all his works and opera-tions; might see the effect of hispower; might glorify the greatlabour of his hands; and bless himfor ever.

CHAPTER 371The vision which he saw, the sec-ond vision of wisdom, whichEnoch saw, the son of Jared, theson of Malaleel, the son of Canan,the son of Enos, the son of Seth,the son of Adam. This is the com-mencement of the word of wis-dom, which I received to declareand tell to those who dwell uponearth. Hear from the beginning,and understand to the end, theholy things which I utter in thepresence of the Lord of spirits.T h o s e w h o w er e b e f o r e u sthought it good to speak;

2And let not us, who come after,obstruct the beginning of wisdom.Until the present period never hasthere been given before the Lordof sp i r i t s tha t which I havereceived, wisdom according thecapacity of my intellect, andaccording to the pleasure of theLord of spirits; that which I havereceived from him, a portion oflife eternal.

3And I obtained three parables,which I declared to the inhabitantsof the world.

CHAPTER 381Parable the first. When the con-gregation of the righteous shall bemanifested; and sinners be judgedfor their crimes, and be troubledin the sight of the world;

2When righteousness shall be man-ifesteda in the presence of therighteous themselves, who will beelected for their good works dulyweighed by the Lord of spirits;and when the light of the righ-teous and the elect, who dwell onearth, shall be manifested; wherewill the habitation of sinners be?And where the place of rest forthose who have rejected the Lordof spirits? It would have been bet-ter for them, had they never beenborn.

3When, too, the secrets of the righ-teous shall be revealed, then shallsinners be judged; and impiousmen shall be afflicted in the pres-ence of the righteous and theelect.

4From that period those who pos-sess the earth shall cease to bepowerful and exalted. Neithershall they be capable of beholdingthe countenances of the holy; forthe light of the countenances ofthe holy, the righteous, and theelect, has been seen by the Lordof spirits.b

CHAPTER 391In those days shall the elect andholy race descend from the upperheavens, and their seed shall thenbe with the sons of men. Enochreceived books of indignation andwrath, and books of hurry andagitation.

2Never shall they obtain mercy,saith the Lord of spirits.

3A cloud then snatched me up, andthe wind raised me above the sur-face of the earth, placing me at theextremity of the heavens.

4There I saw another vision; I sawthe habitations and resting placesof the saints. There my eyesbeheld their habitations with theangels, and their resting placeswith the holy ones. They wereentreating, supplicating, and pray-ing for the sons of men; whilerighteousness like water flowedbefore them, and mercy like dewwas scattered over the earth. Andthus shall it be with them for everand for ever.

5At that time my eyes beheld thedwelling of the elect, of truth,faith, and righteousness.

6Countless shall be the number ofthe holy and the elect, in the pres-ence of God for ever and for ever.

7Their residence I beheld under thewings of the Lord of spirits. Allthe holy and the elect sung beforehim, in appearance like a blaze offire; their mouths being full ofblessings, and their lips glorifyingthe name of the Lord of spirits.And righteousness incessantlydwelt before him.

8There was I desirous of remain-ing, and my soul longed for thathabitation. There was my ante-cedent inheritance; for thus had Iprevailed before the Lord of spir-its.

9At that t ime I g lor i f ied andextolled the name of the Lord ofspirits with blessing and withpraise; for he has established itwith blessing and with praise,according to his own good plea-sure.

10That place long did my eyes con-template. I blessed and said,Blessed be he, blessed from thebeginning for ever. In the begin-ning, before the world was cre-ated, and without end is hisknowledge.

11What is this world? Of everyexisting generation those shallbless you who do not spirituallysleep but stand before your glory,blessing, glorifying, exalting you,

CHAPTER 401After this I beheld thousands ofthousands, and myriads of myri-ads, and an infinite number ofpeople, standing before the Lordof spirits.

2On the four wings likewise of theLord of spirits, on the four sides, Iperceived others, besides thosewho were standing before him.Their names, too, I know; becausethe angel, who proceeded withme, declared them to me, discov-ering to me every secret thing.

3Then I heard the voices of thoseupon the four sides magnifyingthe Lord of glory.

4The first voice blessed the Lord ofspirits for ever and for ever.

5The second voice I heard blessingthe Elect One, and the elect whosuffer on account of the Lord ofspirits.

6The third voice I heard petitioningand praying for those who dwellupon earth, and supplicate thename of the Lord of spirits.

7The fourth voice I heard expellingthe impious angels,a and prohibit-ing them from entering into thepresence of the Lord of spirits, toprefer accusations againstb theinhabitants of the earth.

8After this I besought the angel ofpeace, who proceeded with me, toexplain all that was concealed. Isaid to him, Who are those whomI have seen on the four sides, andwho words I have heard and writ-ten down? He replied, The first isthe merciful, the patient, the holyMichael.

9The second is he who presidesover every suffering and everyaffliction of the sons of men, theholy Raphael. The third, who pre-sides over all that is powerful, isGabriel. And the fourth, who pre-sides over repentance, and thehope of those who will inheriteternal life, is Phanuel. These arethe four angels of the most highGod, and their four voices, whichat that time I heard.

human action, as they weight itthere in balances. I saw the habi-tations of the elect, and the habita-tions of the holy. And there myeyes beheld all the sinners, whodenied the Lord of glory, andwhom they were expelling fromthere, and dragging away, as theystood there; no punishment pro-ceeding against them from theLord of spirits.

2There, too, my eyes beheld thesecrets of the lightning and thethunder; and the secrets of thewinds, how they are distributed asthey blow over the earth: thesecrets of the winds, of the dew,and of the clouds. There I per-ceived the place from which theyissued forth, and became satu-rated with the dust of the earth.

3There I saw the wooden recepta-cles out of which the windsbecame separated, the receptacleof hail, the receptacle of snow, thereceptacle of the clouds, and thecloud itself, which continued overthe earth before the creation of theworld.

4I beheld also the receptacles of themoon, whence they came, whitherthey proceeded, their gloriousreturn, and how one became moresplendid than another. I markedt h e i r r i c h p r o g r e s s , t h e i runchangeable progress, their dis-u n i t e d a n d u n d i m i n i s h e dprogress; their observance of amutual fidelity by a stable oath;

their proceeding forth before thesun, and their adherence to thepath allotted them,a in obedienceto the command of the Lord ofspirits. Potent is his name for everand for ever.

5After this I perceived, that thepath both concealed and manifesto f the moon, as wel l a s theprogress of its path, was therecompleted by day and by night;while each, one with another,looked towards the Lord of spir-its, magnifying and praising with-out cessation, since praise to themis rest; for in the splendid sunthere is a frequent conversion toblessing and to malediction.

6The course of the moon’s path tothe righteous is light, but to sin-ners it is darkness; in the name ofthe Lord of spirits, who created adivision between light and dark-ness, and, separating the spirits ofmen, strengthened the spirits ofthe righteous in the name of hisown righteousness.

7Nor does the angel prevent this,neither is he endowed with thepower of preventing it; for theJudge beholds them al l , andjudges them all in his own pres-ence.

CHAPTER 421Wisdom found not a place onearth where she could inhabit; herdwelling therefore is in heaven.

2Wisdom went forth to dwellamong the sons of men, but sheobtained not a habitation. Wisdomreturned to her place, and seatedherself in the midst of the angels.But iniquity went forth after herreturn, who unwillingly found ahabitation, and resided amongthem, as rain in the desert, and asa dew in a thirsty land.

CHAPTER 431I beheld another splendour, andthe stars of heaven. I observedthat he called them all by theirrespective names, and that theyheard. In a righteous balance Isaw that he weighed out with theirlight the amplitude of their places,and the day of their appearance,and their conversion. Splendourproduced splendour; and theirconversion was into the numberof the angels, and of the faithful.

2Then I inquired of the angel, whoproceeded with me, and explainedto me secret things, What theirnames were. He answered. Asimilitude of those has the Lord ofspir i ts shown you. They arenames of the righteous who dwellupon earth, and who believe in thename of the Lord of spirits forever and for ever.

CHAPTER 441Another thing also I saw respect-ing splendour; that it rises out ofthe stars, and becomes splendour;being incapable of forsakingthem.

CHAPTER 451Parable the second, respectingthese who deny the name of thehabitation of the holy ones, and ofthe Lord of spirits.

2Heaven they shall not ascend, norshall they come on the earth. Thisshall be the portion of sinners,who deny the name of the Lord ofspirits, and who are thus reservedfor the day of punishment and ofaffliction.

3In that day shall the Elect One situpon a throne of glory; and shallchoose their conditions and count-less habitations, while their spiritswithin them shall be strengthened,when they behold my Elect One,for those who have fled for pro-tection to my holy and gloriousname.

4In that day I will cause my ElectOne to dwell in the midst of them;will change the face of heaven;will bless it, and illuminate it forever.

5I will also change the face of theearth, will bless it; and causethose whom I have elected todwell upon it. But those who havecommitted sin and iniquity shallnot inhabit it, for I have marked

CHAPTER 461There I beheld the Ancient ofdays, whose head was like whitewool, and with him another,whose countenance resembledthat of man. His countenance wasfull of grace, like that of one ofthe holy angels. Then I inquiredof one of the angels, who wentwith me, and who showed meevery secret thing, concerning thisSon of man; who he was; whencehe was and why he accompaniedthe Ancient of days.

2He answered and said to me, Thisis the Son of man, to whom righ-teousness belongs; with whomrighteousness has dwelt; and whowill reveal all the treasures of thatwhich is concealed: for the Lordof spirits has chosen him; and hisportion has surpassed all beforethe Lord of spirits in everlastinguprightness.

3This Son of man, whom youbehold, shall raise up kings andthe mighty from their dwellingplaces, and the powerful fromtheir thrones; shall loosen the bri-dles of the powerful, and break inpieces the teeth of sinners.

4He shall hurl kings from theirthrones and their dominions;

because they will not exalt andpraise him, nor humble them-selves before him, by whom theirkingdoms were granted to them.The countenance likewise of themighty shall He cast down, fillingthem with confusion. Darknessshall be their habitation, andworms shall be their bed; norfrom that their bed shall theyhope to be again raised, becausethey exalted not the name of theLord of spirits.

5They shall condemn the stars ofheaven, shall lift up their handsagainst the Most High, shall treadupon and inhabit the earth, exhib-iting all their acts of iniquity, eventheir works of iniquity. Theirstrength shall be in their riches,and their faith in the gods whomthey have formed with their ownhands. They shall deny the nameof the Lord of spirits, and shallexpel him from the temples, inwhich they assemble;

6And with him the faithful,a whosuffer in the name of the Lord ofspirits.

2In that day shall the holy onesassemble, who dwell above theheavens, and with united voicepetition, supplicate, praise, laud,and bless the name of the Lord ofspirits, on account of the blood ofthe righteous which has beenshed; that the prayer of the righ-teous may not be intermittedbefore the Lord of spirits; that forthem he would execute judgment;and that his patience may notendure for ever.a

3At that time I beheld the Ancientof days, while he sat upon thethrone of his glory, while the bookof the living was opened in hispresence, and while all the powerswhich were above the heavensstood around and before him.

4Then were the hearts of the saintsfull of joy, because the consum-mation of righteousness wasarrived, the supplication of thesaints heard, and the blood of therighteous appreciated by the Lordof spirits.

CHAPTER 481In that place I beheld a fountain ofrighteousness, which never failed,encircled by many springs of wis-dom. Of these all the thirstydrank, and were filled with wis-

dom, having their habitation withthe righteous, the elect, and theholy.

2In that hour was this Son of maninvoked before the Lord of spirits,and his name in the presence ofthe Ancient of days.

3Before the sun and the signs werecreated, before the stars of heavenwere fo rmed, h is name wasinvoked in the presence of theLord of spirits. A support shall hebe for the righteous and the holyto lean upon, without falling; andhe shall be the light of nations.

4He shall be the hope of thosewhose hearts are troubled. All,who dwell on earth, shall falldown and worship before him;shall bless and glorify him, andsing praises to the name of theLord of spirits.

5Therefore the Elect and the Con-cealed One existed in his pres-ence , be fo re the wor ld wascreated, and for ever.

6In his presence he existed, and hasrevealed to the saints and to therighteous the wisdom of the Lordof spirits; for he has preserved thelot of the righteous, because theyhave hated and rejected this worldof iniquity, and have detested allits works and ways, in the nameof the Lord of spirits.

7For in his name shall they be pre-served; and his will shall be theirlife. In those days shall the kingsof the earth and the mighty men,who have gained the world by

8For in the day of their anxiety andtrouble their souls shall not besaved; and they shall be in subjec-tion to those whom I have chosen.

9I will cast them like hay into thefire, and like lead into the water.Thus shall they burn in the pres-ence of the righteous, and sink inthe presence of the holy; nor shalla tenth part of them be found.

10But in the day of their trouble,the world shall obtain tranquillity.

11In his presence shall they fall,and not be raised up again; norshall there be any one to takethem out of his hands, and to liftthem up: for they have denied theLord of spirits, and his Messiah.The name of the Lord of spiritsshall be blessed.

CHAPTER 48AA

1Wisdom is poured forth l ikewater, and glory fails not beforehim for ever and ever; for potentis he in all the secrets of righ-teousness.

2But iniquity passes away like ashadow, and possesses not a fixedstation: for the Elect One standsbefore the Lord of spirits; and hisglory is for ever and ever; and hispower from generation to genera-tion.

3With him dwells the spirit of intel-lectual wisdom, the spiri t ofinstruction and of power, and thespirit of those who sleep in righ-teousness; he shall judge secretthings.

4Nor shall any be able to utter asingle word before him; for theElect One is in the presence of theLord of Spirits, according to hisown pleasure.

CHAPTER 491In those days the saints and thechosen shall undergo a change.The light of day shall rest uponthem; and the splendour and gloryof the saints shall be changed.

2In the day of trouble evil shall beheaped up upon sinners; but therighteous shall triumph in thename of the Lord of spirits.

3Others shall be made to see, thatthey must repent, and forsake theworks of their hands; and thatglory awaits them not in the pres-ence of the Lord of spirits; yetthat by his name they may besaved. The Lord of spirits willhave compassion on them; forgreat is his mercy; and righteous-ness is in his judgment, and in thepresence of his glory; nor in hisjudgment shall iniquity stand. Hewho repents not before him shallperish.

2There my eyes beheld the secretsof heaven, and all which existedon earth; a mountain of iron, amountain of copper, a mountainof silver, a mountain of gold, amountain of fluid metal, and amountain of lead.

3And I inquired of the angel whowent with me, saying, What arethese things, which in secret Ibehold?

4He said, All these things whichyou behold sha l l be fo r thedominion of the Messiah, that hemay command, and be powerfulupon earth.

5And that angel of peace answeredme, saying, Wait but a short time,and you shalt understand, andeve ry s e c r e t t h ing s ha l l berevealed to you, which the Lordof spirits has decreed. Thosemountains which you have seen,the mountain of iron, the moun-tain of copper, the mountain ofsilver, the mountain of gold, themountain of fluid metal, and themountain of lead, all these in thepresence of the Elect One shall belike a honeycomb before the fire,and like water descending fromabove upon these mountains; andshall become debilitated beforehis feet.

3I beheld the angels of punishment,who were dwelling there, and pre-paring every instrument of Satan.

5He said, These they are preparingfor the kings and powerful ones ofthe earth, that thus they may per-ish.

6After which the righteous andchosen house of his congregationshall appear, and thenceforwardunchangeable in the name of theLord of spirits.

2To this valley they brought mon-archs and the mighty.

3And there my eyes beheld theinstruments which they weremaking, fetters of iron withoutweight.a

4Then I inquired of the angel ofpeace, who proceeded with me,saying, For whom are these fettersand instruments prepared?

CHAPTER 541Afterwards the Ancient of daysrepented, and said, In vain have Idestroyed all the inhabitants of theearth.

2And he sware by his great name,saying, Henceforwards I will notact thus towards all those whodwell upon earth.

3But I will place a sign in the heav-ens;c and it shall be a faithful wit-ness between me and them forever, as long as the days of heavenand earth last upon the earth.

4Afterwards, according to this mydecree, when I shall be disposedto seize them beforehand, by theinstrumentality of angels, in theday of affliction and trouble, mywrath and my punishment shallremain upon them, my punish-ment and my wrath, saith God theLord of spirits.

5O you kings, O you mighty, whoinhabit the world you shall beholdmy Elect One, sitting upon thethrone of my glory. And he shalljudge Azazeel, all his associates,and all his hosts, in the name ofthe Lord of spirits.

6There likewise I beheld hosts ofangels who were moving in pun-ishment, confined in a net-workof iron and brass. Then I inquiredof the angel of peace, who pro-ceeded with me, To whom thoseunder confinement were going.

9Then shall princesa combinetogether, and conspire. The chiefsof the east, among the Parthiansand Medes, shall remove kings, inwhom a spirit of perturbationshall enter. They shall hurl themfrom their thrones, springing aslions from their dens, and likefamished wolves into the midst ofthe flock.

10They shall go up, and tread uponthe land of their elect. The land oftheir elect shall be before them.The threshing-floor, the path, andthe city of my righteous peopleshall impede the progress of theirhorses. They shall rise up todestroy each other; their righthand shall be strengthened; norshall a man acknowledge hisfriend or his brother;

11Nor the son his father and hismother; until the number of thedead bodies shall be completed,by their death and punishment.Neither shall this take place with-out cause.

12In those days shall the mouth ofhell be opened, into which they

shall be immerged; hell shalldestroy and swallow up sinnersfrom the face of the elect.

CHAPTER 551After this I beheld another armyof chariots with men riding inthem.

2And they came upon the windfrom the east, from the west, andfrom the south.b

3The sound of the noise of theirchariots was heard.

4And when that agitation tookplace; the saints out of heavenperceived it; the pillar of the earthshook from its foundation; and thesound was heard from the extrem-ities of the earth unto the extremi-ties of heaven at the same time.

5Then they all fell down, and wor-shipped the Lord of spirits.

5Henceforward shall the saints betold to seek in heaven the secretsof righteousness, the portion offaith; for like the sun has it arisenupon the earth, while darkness haspassed away. There shall be lightinterminable; nor shall they enterupon the enumeration of time; fordarkness shall be previouslydestroyed, and light shall increasebefore the Lord of spirits; beforethe Lord of spirits shall the lightof uprightness increase for ever.

CHAPTER 571In those days my eyes beheld thesecrets of the lightnings and thesplendours, and the judgmentbelonging to them.

2They lighten for a blessing and fora curse, according to the will ofthe Lord of spirits.

3And there I saw the secrets of thethunder, when it rattles above inheaven, and its sound is heard.

4The habitations also of the earthwere shown to me. The sound ofthe thunder is for peace and forblessing, as well as for a curse,according to the word of the Lordof spirits.

5Afterwards every secret of thesplendours and of the lightnings

was seen by me. For blessing andfor fertility they lighten.

CHAPTER 581In the five hundredth year, and inthe seventh month, on the four-teenth day of the month, of thelifetime of Enoch, in that parable,I saw that the heaven of heavensshook; that it shook violently; andthat the powers of the Most High,and the angels, thousands andthousands, and myriads of myri-ads, were agitated with great agi-tation. And when I looked, theAncient of days was sitting on thethrone of his glory, while theangels and saints were standingaround him. A great tremblingcame upon me, and terror seizedme. My loins were bowed downand loosened; my reins were dis-solved; and I fell upon my face.The holy Michael, another holyangel, one of the holy ones, wassent, who raised me up.

2And when he raised me, my spiritreturned; for I was incapable ofenduring this vision of violence,its agitation, and the concussionof heaven.

3Then holy Michael said to me,Why are you disturbed at thisvision?

4Hitherto has existed the day ofmercy; and he has been mercifuland longsuffering towards all whodwell upon the earth.

5But when the time shall come,then shall the power, the punish-

ment, and the judgment takeplace, which the Lord of spiritshas prepared for those who pros-trate themselves to the judgmentof righteousness, for those whoabjure that judgment, and forthose who take his name in vain.

6That day has been prepared forthe elect as a day of covenant; andfor sinners as a day of inquisition.

7In that day shall be distributed forfood a two monsters; a femalemonster, whose name is Levia-than, dwelling in the depths of thesea, above the springs of waters;

8And a male monster, whose nameis Behemoth; which possesses,moving on his breast, the invisiblewilderness.

9His name was Dendayen in theeast of the garden, where the electand the righteous will dwell;where he received it from myancestor, who was man, fromAdam the first of men,b whom theLord of spirits made.

10Then I asked of another angel toshow me the power of those mon-

sters, how they became sepa-rated, how they became separatedon the same day, one being in thedepths of the sea, and one in thedry desert.

11And he said, You, son of man,are here desirous of understandingsecret things.

12And the angel of peace, who waswith me, said, These two mon-sters are by the power of God pre-pared to become food, that thepunishment of God may not be invain.

13Then shall children be slain withtheir mothers, and sons with theirfathers.

14And when the punishment of theLord of spirits shall continue,upon them shall it continue, thatthe punishment of the Lord ofspirits may not take place in vain.After that, judgment shall existwith mercy and longsuffering.

CHAPTER 591Then another angel, who pro-ceeded with me, spoke to me;

2And showed me the first and lastsecrets in heaven above, and inthe depths of the earth:

3In the extremities of heaven, andin the foundations of it, and in thereceptacle of the winds.

4He showed me how their spiritswere divided; how they were bal-anced; and how both the springsand the winds were numbered

5He showed me the power of themoon's light, that its power is ajust one; as well as the divisionsof the stars, according to theirrespective names;

6That every division is divided;that the lightning flashes;

7That its troops immediately obey;and that a cessation takes placeduring thunder in continuance ofits sound. Nor are the thunder andthe lightning separated; neither doboth of them move with onespirit; yet they are not separated.

8For when the lightning lightens,the thunder sounds, and the spiritat a proper period pauses, makingan equal division between them;for the receptacle, upon whichtheir periods depend, is loose assand. Each of them at a properseason is restrained with a bridle;and turned by the power of thespirit, which thus propels themaccording to the spacious extentof the earth.

9The spirit likewise of the sea ispotent and strong; and as a strongpower causes it to ebb, so is itdriven forwards, and scatteredagainst the mountains of the earth.The spirit of the frost has itsangel; in the spirit of hail there isa good angel; the spirit of snowceases in its strength, and a soli-tary spirit is in it, which ascendsfrom it like vapour, and is calledrefrigeration.

10The spirit also of mist dwellswith them in their receptacle; butit has a receptacle to itself; for itsprogress is in splendour.

11In light, and in darkness, in win-ter and in summer. Its receptacleis bright, and an angel is in it.

12The spirit of dew has its abode inthe extremities of heaven, in con-nection with the receptacle ofrain; and its progress is in winterand in summer. The cloud pro-duced by it, and the cloud of themist, become united; one gives tothe other; and when the spirit ofrain is in motion from its recepta-cle, angels come, and opening itsreceptacle, bring it forth.

13When likewise it is sprinkledover all the earth, it forms anunion with every kind of water onthe ground; for the waters remainon the ground, because they affordnourishment to the earth from theMost High, who is in heaven.

14Upon this account therefore thereis a regulation in the quantity ofrain, which the angels receive.

15These things I saw; all of them,even paradise.

CHAPTER 601In those days I beheld long ropesgiven to those angels; who took totheir wings, and fled, advancingtowards the north.

3The angel, who proceeded withme, said, These are the measuresof the righteous; and cords shallthe righteous bring, that they maytrust in the name of the Lord ofspirits for ever and ever.

4The elect shall begin to dwell withthe elect.

5And these are the measures whichshall be given to faith, and whichshall strengthen the words of righ-teousness.

6These measures shall reveal allthe secrets in the depth of theearth.

7And it shall be, that those whohave been destroyed in the desert,and who have been devoured bythe fish of the sea, and by wildbeasts, shall return, and trust inthe day of the Elect One; for noneshall perish in the presence of theLord of spirits, nor shall any becapable of perishing.

8Then they received the command-ment, all who were in the heavensabove; to whom a combinedpower, voice, and splendour, likefire, were given.

9And first, with their voice, theyblessed him, they exalted him,they glorified him with wisdom,and ascribed to him wisdom withthe word, and with the breath oflife.

10Then the Lord of spirits seatedupon the throne of his glory theElect One;

11Who shall judge all the works ofthe holy, in heaven above, and ina balance shall he weigh theiractions. And when he shall lift uphis countenance to judge theirsecret ways in the word of thename of the Lord of spirits, andtheir progress in the path of therighteous judgment of God mosthigh;

12They shall all speak with unitedvoice; and bless, glorify, exalt,and praise, in the name of theLord of spirits.

15All the holy in heaven shall blessit; all the elect who dwell in thegarden of life; and every spirit oflight, who is capable of blessing,glorifying, exalting, and praisingyour holy name; and every mor-tal man,a more than the powers ofheaven, shall glorify and blessyour name for ever and ever.

16For great is the mercy of theLord of spirits; long-suffering ishe; and all his works, all hispower, great as are the thingsw h i c h h e h as d o n e , h a s h erevealed to the saints and to theelect, in the name of the Lord ofspirits.

CHAPTER 611Thus the Lord commanded thekings, the princes, the exalted,and those who dwell on earth,saying, Open your eyes, and liftup your horns, if you are capableof comprehending the Elect One.

2The Lord of spirits sat upon thethrone of his glory.

3And the spirit of righteousnesswas poured out over him.

4The word of his mouth shalldestroy all the sinners and all theungodly, who shall perish at hispresence.

5In that day shall all the kings, theprinces, the exalted, and thosewho possess the earth, stand up,behold, and perceive, that he issitting on the throne of his glory;that before him the saints shall bejudged in righteousness;

6And that nothing, which shall bespoken before him, shall be spo-ken in vain.

7Trouble shall come upon them, asupon a woman in travail, whoselabour is severe, when her childcomes to the mouth of the womb,and she finds it difficult to bringforth.

8One portion of them shall lookupon another. They shall be aston-ished, and shall humble theircountenance;

9And trouble shall seize them,when they shall behold this Sonof woman sitting upon the throneof his glory.

13They shall fix their hopes on thisSon of man, shall pray to him, andpetition him for mercy.

14Then shall the Lord of spiritshasten to expel them from hispresence. Their faces shall be fullof confusion, and their faces shalldarkness cover. The angels shalltake them to punishment, thatvengeance may be inflicted onthose who have oppressed hischildren and his elect. And theyshall become an example to thesaints and to his elect. Throughthem shall these be made joyful;for the anger of the Lord of spiritsshall rest upon them.

15Then the sword of the Lord ofspirits shall be drunk with theirblood; but the saints and electshall be safe in that day; nor theface o f t he s i nne r s and theungodly shall they thencefor-wards behold.

16The Lord of spirits shall remainover them:

17And with this Son of man shallthey dwell, eat, lie down, and riseup, for ever and ever.

18The saints and the elect havearisen from the earth, have left offto depress their countenances, andhave been clothed with the gar-ment of life. That garment of lifeis with the Lord of spirits, inwhose presence your garment

shall not wax old, nor shall yourglory diminish.

CHAPTER 621In those days the kings who pos-sess the earth shall be punished bythe angels of his wrath, whereso-ever they shall be delivered up,that he may give rest for a shortperiod; and that they may falldown and worship before theLord of spirits, confessing theirsins before him.

2They shall bless and glorify theLord of spirits, saying, Blessed isthe Lord of spirits, the Lord ofkings, the Lord of princes, theLord of the rich, the Lord ofglory, and the Lord of wisdom.

3He shall enlighten every secretthing.

4Your power is from generation togeneration; and your glory forever and ever.

5Deep are all your secrets, andnumberless; and your righteous-ness cannot be calculated.

6Now we know, that we shouldglorify and bless the Lord ofkings, him who is King over allthings.

7They shall also say, Who hasgranted us rest to glorify, laud,bless, and confess in the presenceof his glory?

8And now small is the rest wedesire; but we do not find it; wereject, and do not possess it. Lighthas passed away from before us;

9 For we have not confessed beforehim; we have not glorified thename of the Lord of kings; wehave not glorified the Lord in allhis works; but we have trusted inthe sceptre of our dominion andof our glory.

10In the day of our suffering and ofour trouble he will not save us,neither shall we find rest. We con-fess that our Lord is faithful in allhis works, in all his judgments,and in his righteousness.

11In his judgments he pays norespect to persons; and we mustdepart from his presence, onaccount of our evil deeds.

12All our sins are truly withoutnumber.

13Then shall they say to them-selves, Our souls are satiated withthe instruments of crime;

14But that prevents us not fromdescending to the flaming wombof hell.

15Afterwards, their countenancesshall be filled with darkness andconfusion before the Son of man;from whose presence they shall beexpelled, and before whom thesword shall remain to expel them.

16Thus saith the Lord of spirits,This is the decree and the judg-ment against the princes, thekings, the exalted, and those whopossess the earth, in the presenceof the Lord of spirits.

CHAPTER 631I saw also other countenances inthat secret place. I heard the voiceof an angel, saying, These are theangels who have descended fromh e a v e n t o e a r t h , a n d h a v erevealed secrets to the sons ofmen, and have seduced the sonsof men to the commission of sin.

CHAPTER 64A

1In those days Noah saw that theearth became inclined, and thatdestruction approached.

2Then he lifted up his feet, andwent to the ends of the earth, tothe dwelling of his great-grandfa-ther Enoch.

3And Noah cried with a bittervoice, Hear me; hear me; hear me:three times. And he said, Tell mewhat is transacting upon the earth;for the earth labours, and is vio-lently shaken. Surely I shall per-ish with it.

4After this there was a great pertur-bation on earth, and a voice washeard from heaven. I fell down onmy face, when my great-grandfa-ther Enoch came and stood by me.

5He said to me, Why have youcried out to me with a bitter cryand lamentation?

dwell on the earth, that they maybe destroyed; for they know everysecret of the angels, every oppres-sive and secret power of the dev-ils,a and every power of thosewho commit sorcery, as well as ofthose who make molten images inthe whole earth.

7They know how silver is pro-duced from the dust of the earth,and how on the earth the metallicdrop exists; for lead and tin arenot produced from earth, as theprimary fountain of their produc-tion.

8There is an angel standing upon it,and that angel struggles to prevail.

9Afterwards my great-grandfatherEnoch seized me with his hand,raising me up, and saying to me,Go, for I have asked the Lord ofspirits respecting this perturba-tion of the earth; who replied, Onaccount of their impiety have theirinnumerable judgments been con-summated before me. Respectingthe moons have they inquired, andthey have known that the earthwill perish with those who dwellupon it,b and that to these therewill be no place of refuge for ever.

10They have discovered secrets,and they are those who have beenjudged; but not you my son. TheLord of spirits knows that you arepure and good, free from thereproach of discovering secrets.

11He, the holy One, will establishyour name in the midst of thesaints, and will preserve you fromthose who dwell upon the earth.He will establish your seed inrighteousness, with dominion andgreat glory;c and from your seedshall spring forth righteousnessand holy men without number forever.

CHAPTER 651After this he showed me theangels of punishment, who wereprepared to come, and to open allthe mighty waters under the earth:

2That they may be for judgment,and for the destruction of all thosewho remain and dwell upon theearth.

3And the Lord of spirits com-manded the angels who wentforth, not to take up the men andpreserve them.

4For those angels presiding over allthe mighty waters. Then I wentout from the presence of Enoch.

CHAPTER 661In those days the word of Godcame to me, and said, Noah,behold, your lot has ascended upto me, a lot void of crime, a lotbeloved and upright.

2Now then shall the angels labourat the trees;a but when they pro-ceed to this, I will put my handupon it, and preserve it.

3The seed of life shall arise from it,and a change shall take place, thatthe dry land shall not be leftempty. I will establish your seedbefore me for ever and ever, andthe seed of those who dwell withyou on the surface of the earth. Itshall be blessed and multiplied inthe presence of the earth, in thename of the Lord.

4And they shall confine thoseangels who disclosed impiety. Inthat burning valley it is, that theyshall be confined, which at firstmy great-grandfather Enochshowed me in the west, wherethere were mountains of gold andsilver, of iron, of fluid metal, andof tin.

5I beheld that valley in which therewas great perturbation, and wherethe waters were troubled.

6And when all this was effected,from the fluid mass of fire, andthe perturbation which prevailedb

in that place, there arose a strongsmell of sulphur, which becamemixed with the waters; and thevalley of the angels, who hadbeen guilty of seduction, burnedunderneath its soil.

7Through that valley also rivers offire were flowing, to which thoseangels shall be condemned, whoseduced the inhabitants of theearth.

8And in those days shall thesewaters be to kings, to princes, tothe exalted, and to the inhabitantsof the earth, for the healing of thesoul and body, and for the judg-ment of the spirit.

9Their spirits shall be full of rev-elry,c that they may be judged intheir bodies; because they havedenied the Lord of spirits, andalthough they perceive their con-demnat ion day by day, theybelieve not in his name.

10And as the inflammation of theirbodies shall be great, so shall theirspirits undergo a change for ever.

11For no word which is utteredbefore the Lord of spirits shall bein vain.

12Judgment has come upon them,because they trusted in their car-nal revelry, and denied the Lordof spirits.

CHAPTER 671After this he gave me the charac-teristical marksb of all the secretthings in the book of my great-grandfather Enoch, and in the par-ables which had been given tohim; inserting them for me amongthe words of the book of parables.

3Judgment has gone forth againstthem by those who have thusdragged them away; and that was,when they stood in the presenceof the Lord of spirits.

4In like manner also holy Rakaelsaid to Raphael, They shall not bebefore the eye of the Lord;c sincethe Lord of spir i ts has beenoffended with them; for l ikelordsd have they conducted them-selves. Therefore will he bringupon them a secret judgment forever and ever.

5For neither shall angel nor manreceive a portion of it; but theyalone shall receive their ownjudgment for ever end ever.

The first ofthem is Samyaza; the second,Arstikapha; the third, Armen; thefourth, Kakabael; the fifth, Turel;the sixth, Rumyel; the seventh,Danyal; the eighth, Kael; theninth, Barakel; the tenth, Azazel;the eleventh, Armers; the twelfth,Bataryal; the thirteenth, Basasael;the fourteenth, Ananel; the fif-teenth, Turyal; the sixteenth,Simapiseel; the seventeenth,Yetarel; the eighteenth, Tumael;the nineteenth, Tarel; the twenti-eth, Rumel; the twenty-first, Aza-zyel.

3These are the chiefs of theirangels, and the names of the lead-ers of their hundreds, and theleaders of their fifties, and theleaders of their tens.

4The name of the first is Yekun:ahe it was who seduced all the sonsof the holy angels; and causingthem to descend on earth, ledastray the offspring of men.

5The name of the second is Kesa-bel, who pointed out evil counselto the sons of the holy angels, andinduced them to corrupt their bod-ies by generating mankind.

6The name of the third is Gadrel:he discovered every stroke ofdeath to the children of men.

7He seduced Eve; and discoveredto the children of men the instru-ments of death, the coat of mail,the shield, and the sword forslaughter; every instrument ofdeath to the children of men.

8From his hand were these thingsderived to them who dwell uponearth, from that period for ever.

9The name of the fourth is Pene-mue: he discovered to the childrenof men bitterness and sweetness;

10And pointed out to them everysecret of their wisdom.

11He taught men to understandwriting, and the use of ink andpaper.

12Therefore numerous have beenthose who have gone astray fromevery period of the world, even tothis day.

13For men were not born for this,thus with pen and with ink to con-firm their faith;

14Since they were not created,except that, like the angels, theymight remain righteous and pure.

15Nor would death, which destroyseverything, have effected them;

16But by this their knowledge theyperish, and by this also its powerconsumes them.

of the spirit by the bite of the ser-pent, and the stroke which isgiven in the mid-day by the off-spring of the serpent, the name ofwhich is Tabaet.a

20Its name is Beka. He spoke toholy Michael to discover to themthe sacred name, that they mightunderstand that secret name, andthus remember the oath; and thatthose who pointed out everysecret thing to the children of menmight tremble at that name andoath.

21This is the power of that oath; forpowerful it is, and strong.

22And he established this oath ofAkae by the instrumentality of theholy Michael.

23These are the secrets of this oath,and by it were they confirmed.

24Heaven was suspended by itbefore the world was made, forever.

25By it has the earth been foundedupon the flood; while from theconcealed parts of the hills theagitated waters proceed forth

from the creation to the end of theworld.

26By this oath the sea has beenformed, and the foundation of it.

36And with them he establishesthis oath, by which they and theirpaths are preserved; nor does theirprogress perish.

37Great was their joy.38They blessed, glorified, andexalted, because the name of theSon of man was revealed to them.

40According to their ranks of cor-ruption shall they be imprisoned,and all their works shall disappearfrom the face of the earth; northenceforward shall there be anyto corrupt; for the Son of man hasbeen seen, sitting on the throne ofhis glory.

41Everything wicked shall disap-pear, and depart from before hisface; and the word of the Son ofman shall become powerful in thepresence of the Lord of spirits.

CHAPTER 691After this the name of the Son ofman, living with the Lord of spir-its, was exalted by the inhabitantsof the earth.

2It was exalted in the chariots ofthe Spirit; and the name wentforth in the midst of them.

3From that time I was not drawninto the midst of them; but heseated me between two spirits,between the north and the west,where the angels received theirropes, to measure out a place forthe elect and the righteous.

4There I beheld the fathers of thefirst men, and the saints, whodwell in that place for ever.

CHAPTER 701Afterwards my spirit was con-cealed, ascending into the heav-ens. I beheld the sons of the holyangels treading on flaming fire,whose garments and robes werewhite, and whose countenanceswere transparent as crystal.

CHAPTER 711The book of the revolutions of theluminaries of heaven, accordingto their respective classes, theirrespective powers, their respec-tive periods, their respectivenames, the places where theycommence their progress, andtheir respective months, whichUriel, the holy angel who waswith me, explained to me; he whoconducted them. The wholeaccount of them, according toevery year of the world for ever,until a new work shall be effected,which will be eternal.

2This is the first law of the lumi-naries. The sun and the lightarrive at the gates of heaven,which are on the east, and on thewest of it at the western gates ofheaven.

3I beheld the gates whence the sungoes forth; and the gates wherethe sun sets;

4In which gates also the moon risesand sets; and I beheld the conduc-tors of the stars, among those whoprecede them; six gates were atthe rising, and six at the setting ofthe sun.

5All these respectively, one afteranother, a re on a level ; andnumerous windows are on theright and on the left sides of thosegates.

6First proceeds forth that greatluminary, which is called the sun;the orb of which is as the orb ofheaven, the whole of it beingreplete with splendid and flamingfire.

12When the sun rises in heaven, itgoes forth through this fourth gatethirty days, and by the fourth gatein the west of heaven on a levelwith it descends.

13During that period the day islengthened from the day, and thenight curtailed from the night forthirty days. And then the day islonger by two parts than the night.

14The day is precisely ten parts,and the night is eight.

15The sun goes forth through thisfourth gate, and sets in it, andturns to the fifth gate during thirtydays; after which it proceedsfrom, and sets in, the fifth gate.

16Then the day becomes length-ened by a second portion, so thatit is eleven parts: while the nightbecomes shortened, and is onlyseven parts.

17The sun now returns to the east,entering into the sixth gate, andrising and setting in the sixth gatethirty-one days, on account of itssigns.

18At that period the day is longerthan the night, being twice as longas the night; and become twelveparts;

19But the night is shortened, andbecomes six parts. Then the sun

rises up, that the day may beshortened, and the night length-ened.

28The sun now goes from the thirdgate, as it sets in the third gate inthe west; but returning to the east,it proceeds by the second gate ofthe east for thirty days.

29In like manner also it sets in thesecond gate in the west of heaven.

30At that period the night is elevenparts, and the day seven parts.

31Then the sun goes at that timefrom the second gate, as it sets inthe second gate in the west; butreturns to the east, proceeding bythe first gate, for thirty-one days.

32And sets in the west in the firstgate.

33At that period that night islengthened as much again as theday.

34It is twelve parts precisely, whilethe day is six parts.

35The sun has thus completed itsbeginnings, and a second timegoes round from these begin-nings.

36Into that first gate it enters forthirty days, and sets in the west, inthe opposite part of heaven.

37At that period the night is con-tracted in its length a fourth part,that is, one portion, and becomeseleven parts.

38The day is seven parts.

39Then the sun returns, and entersinto the second gate of the east.

41At that period the night is con-tracted in its length. It becomesten parts, and the day eight parts.Then the sun goes from that sec-ond gate, and sets in the west; butreturns to the east, and rises in theeast, in the third gate, thirty-onedays , se t t ing in the wes t o fheaven.

42At that period the night becomesshortened. It is nine parts. And thenight is equal with the day. Theyear is precisely three hundredand sixty-four days.

43The lengthening of the day andnight, and the contraction of theday and night, are made to differfrom each other by the progress ofthe sun.

44By means of this progress theday is daily lengthened, and thenight greatly shortened.

45This is the law and progress ofthe sun, and its turning when itturns back, turning during sixtydays,a and going forth. This is thegreat everlasting luminary, thatwhich he names the sun for everand ever.

47And thus it goes in and out, nei-ther slackening nor resting; butrunning on in its chariot by dayand by night. It shines with a sev-enth portion of light from themoon;a but the dimensions ofboth are equal.

CHAPTER 721After this law I beheld anotherlaw of an inferior luminary, thename of which is the moon, andthe orb of which is as the orb ofheaven.

2Its chariot, which i t secretlyascends, the wind blows; and lightis given to it by measure.

3Every month a t i t s exi t andentrance it becomes changed; andits periods are as the periods ofthe sun. And when in like mannerits light is to exist,b its light is aseventh portion from the light ofthe sun.

4Thus it rises, and at its com-mencement towards the east goesforth for thirty days.

5At that t ime i t appears , andbecomes to you the beginning ofthe month. Thirty days it is withthe sun in the gate from which thesun goes forth.

6Half of it is in extent seven por-tions, one half; and the whole ofits orb is void of light, except aseventh portion out of the four-teen portions of its light. And in aday it receives a seventh portion,or half that portion, of its light. Itslight is by sevens, by one portion,and by the half of a portion. Itssets with the sun.

7And when the sun rises, the moonrises with it; receiving half a por-tion of light.

8On that night, when it commencesits period, previously to the day ofthe month, the moon sets with thesun.

9And on that night it is dark in itsfourteen portions, that is, in eachhalf; but it rises on that day withone seventh portion precisely, andin its progress declines from therising of the sun.

10During the remainder of i tsperiod its light increases to four-teen portions.

CHAPTER 731Then I saw another progress andregulation which He effected inthe law of the moon. The progress

of the moons, and everythingrelating to them, Uriel showedme, the holy angel who conductedthem all.

2Their stations I wrote down as heshowed them to me.

3I wrote down their months, asthey occur, and the appearance oftheir light, until it is completed infifteen days.

4In each of its two seven portions itcompletes all its light at rising andat setting.

5On stated months it changes itssettings; and on stated months itmakes its progress through eachgate. In two gates the moon setswith the sun, viz. in those twogates which are in the midst, inthe third and fourth gate. From thethird gate it goes forth for sevendays, and makes its circuit.

6Again i t re turns to the ga tewhence the sun goes forth, and inthat completes the whole of itslight. Then it declines from thesun, and enters in eight days intothe sixth gate, and returns inseven days to the third gate, fromwhich the sun goes forth.

7When the sun proceeds to thefourth gate, the moon goes forthfor seven days, until it passesfrom the fifth gate.

8Again it returns in seven days tothe fourth gate, and completing allits light, declines, and passes onby the first gate in eight days;

9And returns in seven days to thefourth gate, from which the sungoes forth.

10Thus I beheld their stations, asaccording to the fixed order of themonths the sun rises and sets.

11At those times there is an excessof thirty days belonging to the sunin five years; all the days belong-ing to each year of the five years,when completed, amount to threehundred and sixty-four days; andto the sun and stars belong sixdays; six days in each of the fiveyears; thus thirty days belongingto them;

12So that the moon has thirty daysless than the sun and stars.

13The moon brings on all the yearsexactly, that their stations maycome neither too forwards nor toobackwards a single day; but thatthe years may be changed withcorrect precision in three hundredand sixty-four days. In three yearsthe days are one thousand andninety-two; in five years they areone thousand eight hundred andtwenty; and in eight years twothousand nine hundred and twelvedays.

CHAPTER 741These are the leaders of the chiefsof the thousands, those which pre-side over all creation, and over allthe stars; with the four days whichare added and never separatedfrom the place allotted them,according to the complete calcula-tion of the year.

2And these serve four days, whichare not calculated in the calcula-tion of the year.

3Respecting them, men greatly err,for these luminaries truly serve, inthe dwelling place of the world,one day in the first gate, one in thethird gate, one in the fourth gate,and one in the sixth gate.

4And the harmony of the worldbecomes complete every threehundred and sixty-fourth state ofit. For the signs,

CHAPTER 751And at the extremities of the earthI beheld twelve gates open for allthe winds, from which they pro-ceed and blow over the earth.

2Three of them are open in thefront of heaven, three in the west,three on the right side of heaven,and three on the left. The firstthree are those which are towardsthe east, three are towards thenorth, three behind those whichare upon the left, towards thesouth, and three on the west.

3From four of them proceed windsof blessing, and of health; andfrom eight proceed winds of pun-ishment; when they are sent todestroy the earth, and the heavenabove it, all its inhabitants, and allwhich are in the waters, or on dryland.

4The first of these winds proceedsfrom the gate termed the eastern,through the first gate on the east,which inclines southwards. Fromth is goes fo r th des t ruc t ion ,drought, heat, and perdition.

5From the second gate, the middleone, proceeds equity. There issuefrom it rain, fruitfulness, health,and dew; and from the third gatenorthwards, proceed cold anddrought.

13All the time that the moon is inprogress with its light, it is pouredinto it in the presence of the sun,until its light is in fourteen dayscompleted in heaven.

14And when it is wholly extin-guished, its light is consumed inheaven; and on the first day it iscalled the new moon, for on thatday light is received into it.

15It becomes precisely completedon the day that the sun descendsinto the west, while the moonascends at night from the east.

16The moon then shines all thenight, until the sun rises before it;when the moon disappears in turnbefore the sun.

17Where light comes to the moon,there again it decreases, until allits light is extinguished, and thedays of the moon pass away.

18Then its orb remains solitarywithout light.

19During three months it effects inthirty days each month its period;and during three more months iteffects it in twenty-nine dayseach. These are the times in whichit effects its decrease in its firstperiod, and in the first gate,namely, in one hundred and sev-enty-seven days.

20And at the time of its going forthduring three months it appearsthirty days each, and during threemore months it appears twenty-nine days each.

21In the night it appears for eachtwenty days as the face of a man,and in the day as heaven; for it isnothing else except its light.

CHAPTER 781And now, my son Mathusala, Ihave shown you everything; andthe account of every ordinance ofthe stars of heaven is finished.

2He showed me every ordinancerespecting these, which takesplace at all times and in all sea-sons under every influence, in allyears, at the arrival and under therule of each, during every monthand every week. He showed mealso the decrease of the moon,which is effected in the sixth gate;for in that sixth gate is its lightconsumed.

3From this is the beginning of themonth; and its decrease is effectedin the sixth gate in its period, untila hundred and seventy-seven daysare completed; according to themode of calculation by weeks,twenty-five weeks and two days.

4Its period is less that that of thesun, according to the ordinance ofthe stars, by five days in one halfyeara precisely.

5When that their visible situation iscompleted. Such is the appear-

ance and likeness of every lumi-nary, which Uriel, the great angelwho conducts them, showed tome.

CHAPTER 791In those days Uriel answered andsaid to me, Behold, I have showedyou all things, O Enoch;

2And all things have I revealed toyou. You see the sun, the moon,and those which conduct the starsof heaven, which cause all theiroperations, seasons, and arrivalsto return.

3In the days of sinners the yearsshall be shortened.

4Their seed shall be backward intheir prolific soil; and everythingdone on earth shall be subverted,and disappear in its season. Therain shall be restrained, andheaven shall stand still.

5In those days the fruits of theearth shall be late, and not flour-ish in their season; and in theirseason the fruits of the trees shallbe withholden.

6The moon shall change its laws,and not be seen at i ts properperiod. But in those days shallheaven be seen; and barrennessshall take place in the borders ofthe great chariots in the west.Heaven shall shine more thanwhen illuminated by the orders of

7Those shall not appear in theirseason, who commanded them,and all the classes of the starsshall be shut up against sinners.

8The thoughts of those who dwellon the earth shal l transgresswithin them; and they shall beperverted in all their ways.

9They shall transgress, and thinkthemselvesa gods; while evil shallbe multiplied among them.

10And punishment shall comeupon them, so that all of themshall be destroyed.

CHAPTER 801He said, O Enoch, look on thebook which heaven has graduallydropped down;b and, reading thatwhich is written in it, understandevery part of it.

2Then I looked on all which waswritten, and understood all, read-ing the book and everything writ-ten in it, all the works of man;

3And of all the children of fleshupon earth, during the generationsof the world.

4Immediately after I blessed theLord, the King of glory, who hasthus for ever formed the wholeworkmanship of the world.

5And I glorified the Lord, onaccount of his long-suffering andblessing towards the children ofthe world.

6At that time I said, Blessed is theman, who shall die righteous andgood, against whom no catalogueof crime has been written, andwith whom iniquity is not found.

7Then those three holy ones causedme to approach, and placed me onthe earth, before the door of myhouse.

8And they said unto me, Explaineverything to Mathusala your son;and inform all your children, thatno flesh shall be justified beforethe Lord; for he is their Creator.

9During one year we shall leaveyou with your children, until youshalt again recover your strength,that you may instruct your fam-ily, write these things, and explainthem to all your children. 11Those likewise who act righ-teously shall die on account of theworks of man, and shall be gath-ered together on account of theworks of the wicked.

12In those days they finished con-versing with me.

13And I returned to my fellowmen, blessing the Lord of worlds.

CHAPTER 811Now, my son Mathusala, all thesethings I speak unto you, and writefor you. To you I have revealedall, and have given you books ofeverything.

2Preserve, my son Mathusala, thebooks written by your father; thatyou may reveal them to futuregenerations.

3Wisdom have I given you, to yourchildren, and your posterity, thatthey may reveal to their children,for generations for ever, this wis-dom in their thoughts; and thatthose who comprehend it may notslumber, but hear with their ears;that they may learn this wisdom,and be deemed worthy of eatingthis wholesome food.

4Blessed are all the righteous;blessed are all who walk in righ-teousness; in whom no crime isfound, as in sinners, when all theirdays are numbered.

5With respect to the progress of thesun in heaven, it enters and goesout of each gate for thirty days,with the leaders of the thousand

classes of the stars; with fourwhich are added, and appertain tothe four quarters of the year,which conduct them, and accom-pany them at four periods.

6Respecting these, men greatly err,and do not calculate them in thecalculation of every age; for theygreatly err respecting them; nordo men know accurately that theyare in the calculation of the year.But indeed these are markeddown for ever; one in the firstgate, one in the third, one in thefourth, and one in the sixth:

7So that the year is completed inthree hundred and sixty-four days.

8Truly has been stated, and accu-rately has been calculated thatwhich is marked down; for theluminaries, the months, the fixedperiods, the years, and the days,Uriel has explained to me, andcommunicated to me; whom theLord of a l l c rea t ion , on myaccount, commanded (accordingto the might of heaven, and thepower which it possesses both bynight and by day) to explain thelaws of light to man, of the sun,moon, and stars, and of all thepowers of heaven, which areturned with their respective orbs.

9This is the ordinance of the stars,which set in their places, in theirseasons, in their periods, in theirdays, and in their months.

11Four conductors of them firstenter, who separate the four quar-ters of the year. After these,twelve conductors of their classes,who separate the months and theyear into three hundred and sixty-four days, with the leaders of at h o u s a n d , w h o d i s t i n g u i s hbetween the days, as well asbetween the four additional ones;which, as conductors, divide thefour quarters of the year.

12These leaders of a thousand arein the midst of the conductors,and the conductors are added eachbehind his station, and their con-ductors make the separation.These are the names of the con-ductors, who separate the fourquarters of the year, who areappointed over them: Melkel,Helammelak,

13Meliyal, and Narel.14And the names of those who con-duct them are Adnarel, Jyasusal,and Jyelumeal.

15These are the three who followafter the conductors of the classesof stars; each following after thethree conductors of the classes,which themselves follow afterthose conductors of the stations,who divide the four quarters ofthe year.

16In the first part of the year risesand rules Melkyas, who is namedTamani, and Zahay.a

17All the days of his influence,during which he rules, are ninety-one days.

18And these are the signs of thedays which are seen upon theearth. In the days of his influencethere is perspiration, heat, andtrouble. All the trees becomefruitful; the leaf of every treecomes forth; the corn is reaped;the rose and every species offlowers blossoms in the field; andthe trees of winter are dried up.

19These are the names of the con-ductors who are under them: Bar-k e l , Z e l s a b e l ; a n d a n o t h e radditional conductor of a thou-sand is named Heloyalef, the daysof those influence have been com-pleted. 3And on account of these thingsbesought the Lord.

4I was lying down in the house ofmy grandfather Malalel, when Isaw in a vision heaven purifying,and snatched away.a

5And falling to the earth,b I sawlikewise the earth absorbed by a

great abyss; and mountains sus-pended over mountains.

6Hills were sinking upon hills,lofty trees were gliding off fromtheir trunks, and were in the act ofbeing projected, and of sinkinginto the abyss.

7Being alarmed at these things, myvoice faltered.c I cried out andsaid, The earth is destroyed. Thenmy grandfather Malalel raised meup, and said to me: Why do youthus cry out, my son? And where-fore thus do you lament?

8I related to him the whole visionwhich I had seen. He said to me,Confirmed is that which you haveseen, my son;

9And potent the vision of yourdream respecting every secret sinof the earth. Its substance shallsink into the abyss, and a greatdestruction take place.

12When I went down below, andlooking up to heaven, beheld thesun proceeding from the east, themoon descending to the west, afew scattered stars, and every-thing which God has known fromthe beginning, I blessed the Lordof judgment, and magnified him:because he hath sent forth the sunfrom the chambersa of the east;that, ascending and rising in theface of heaven, it might spring up,and pursue the path which hasbeen pointed out to it.

CHAPTER 831I lifted up my hands in righteous-ness, and blessed the holy, and theGreat One. I spoke with the breathof my mouth, and with a tongueof flesh, which God has formedfor all the sons of mortal men, thatwith it they may speak; givingthem breath, a mouth, and atongue to converse with.

2Blessed are you, O Lord, theKing, great and powerful in yourgreatness, Lord of all the crea-tures of heaven, King of kings,God of the whole world, whosereign, whose kingdom, and whosemajesty endure for ever and ever.

3From generation to generationshall your dominion exist. All theheavens are your throne for ever,and all the earth your footstool forever and for ever.

4For you have made them, andover all you reign. No act whatso-ever exceeds your power. Withyour wisdom is unchangeable; norfrom your throne and from yourpresence is it ever averted. Youknow all things, see and hearthem; nor is anything concealedfrom you; for you perceive allthings.

5The angels of your heavens havetransgressed; and on mortal fleshshall your wrath remain, until theday of the great judgment.

CHAPTER 841After this I saw another dream,and explained it all to you, myson. Enoch arose and said to hisson Mathusala, To you, my son,will I speak. Hear my word; andincline your ear to the visionarydream of your father. Before Imarried your mother Edna, I sawa vision on my bed;a

2And behold, a cow sprung forthfrom the earth;

3And this cow was white.4Afterwards a female heifer sprungforth; and with it another heifer:bone of them was black, and onewas red.c

5The black heifer then struck thered one, and pursued it over theearth.

6From that period I could see noth-ing more of the red heifer; but theblack one increased in bulk, and afemale heifer came with him.

7After this I saw that many cowsproceeded forth, resembling him,and following after him.

8The first female young one alsowent out in the presence of thefirst cow; and sought the redheifer, but found him not.

9And she lamented with a greatlamentation, while she was seek-ing him.

10Then I looked until that first cowcame to her, from which time shebecame silent, and ceased tolament.

lament one with another. Again Ilooked in my vision, and surveyedheaven; when behold I saw manystars which descended, and pro-jected themselves from heaven towhere the first star was,

2Those three, who came forth last,seized me by my hand; and rais-ing me up from the generations ofthe earth, elevated me to a highstation.

3Then they showed me a loftytower on the earth, while everyhill became diminished. And theysaid, Remain here, until you per-ceive what shall come upon thoseelephants, camels, and asses,upon the stars, and upon all thecows.

CHAPTER 871Then I looked at that one of thefour white men, who came forthfirst.

2He seized the first star which felldown from heaven.

3And, binding it hand and foot, hecast it into a valley; a valley nar-row, deep , s tupendous , andgloomy.

4Then one of them drew his sword,and gave it to the elephants, cam-els, and asses, who began to strikeeach other. And the whole earthshook on account of them.

5And when I looked in the vision,behold, one of those four angels,who came forth, hurled fromheaven, collected together, andtook all the great stars, whoseform partly resembles that ofhorses; and binding them all handand foot, cast them into the cavi-ties of the earth.

CHAPTER 881Then one of those four went to thewhite cows, and taught them amystery. While the cow was trem-bling, it was born, and became aman,a and fabricated for himself alarge ship. In this he dwelt, andthree cowsb dwelt with him in thatship, which covered them.

2Again I lifted up my eyes towardsheaven, and saw a lofty roof.Above it were seven cataracts,which poured fourth on a certainvillage much water.

3Again I looked, and behold therewere fountains open on the earthin that large village.

4The water began to boil up, androse over the earth; so that the vil-lage was not seen, while its wholesoil was covered with water.

5Much water was over it, darkness,and clouds. Then I surveyed theheight of this water; and it waselevated above the village.

6It flowed over the village, andstood higher than the earth.

7Then all the cows which were col-lected there, while I looked onthem, were drowned, swallowedup, and destroyed in the water.

8But the ship floated above it. Allthe cows, the elephants, the cam-els, and the asses, were drownedon the earth, and all cattle. Nor

could I perceive them. Neitherwere they able to get out, but per-ished, and sunk into the deep.

9Again I looked in the vision untilthose cataracts from that loftyroof were removed, and the foun-tains of the earth became equal-ized, while other depths wereopened;

10Into which the water began todescend, until the dry groundappeared.

11The ship remained on the earth;the darkness receded; and i tbecame light.

12Then the white cow, whichbecame a man, went out of theship, and the three cows with him.

13One of the three cows was white,resembling that cow; one of themwas red as blood; and one of themwas black. And the white cow leftthem.

14Then began wild beasts and birdsto bring forth.

15Of all these the different kindsassembled together, lions, tigers,wolves, dogs, wild boars, foxes,rabbits, and the hanzar.

16The siset, the avest, kites, thephonkas, and ravens.

17Then the white cowc was born inthe midst of them.

19That wild sow also brought forthmany swine.

29I beheld the sheep moaning, cry-ing, and petitioning their Lord.

30With all their might, until theLord of the sheep descended attheir voice from his lofty habita-tion; went to them; and inspectedthem.

31He called to that sheep whichhad secretly stolen away from thewolves, and told him to make thewolves understand that they werenot to touch the sheep.

32Then that sheep went to thewolves with the word of the Lord,when another met him,h and pro-ceeded with him.

33Both of them together enteredthe dwelling of the wolves; andconversing with them made themunderstand, that thenceforwardsthey were not to touch the sheep.

34Afterwards I perceived thewolves greatly prevailing over thesheep with their whole force. Thesheep cried out; and their Lordcame to them.

35He began to strike the wolves,who commenced a grievous lam-entation; but the sheep weresilent, nor from that time did theycry out.

eyes of the wolves were blind,who went out and followed themwith all their might. But the Lordof the sheep proceeded with them,and conducted them.

37All his sheep followed him.38His countenance was terrific andsplendid, and glorious was hisaspect. Yet the wolves began tofollow the sheep, until they over-took them in a certain lake ofwater.a

39Then that lake became divided;the water standing up on bothsides before their face.

40And while their Lord was con-ducting them, he placed himselfbetween them and the wolves.

41The wolves however perceivednot the sheep, but went into themidst of the lake, following them,and running after them into thelake of water.

42But when they saw the Lord ofthe sheep, they turned to fly frombefore his face.

43Then the water of the lakereturned, and that suddenly,according to its nature. It becamefull, and was raised up, until itcovered the wolves. And I sawthat all of them which had fol-lowed the sheep perished, andwere drowned.

44But the sheep passed over thiswater, proceeding to a wilder-ness, which was without both

water and grass. And they beganto open their eyes and to see.

45Then I beheld the Lord of thesheep inspecting them, and givingthem water and grass.

46The sheep already mentionedwas proceeding with them, andconducting them.

47And when he had ascended thetop of the lofty rock, the Lord ofthe sheep sent him to them.

48Afterwards I perceived theirLord standing before them, withan aspect terrific and severe.

49And when they all beheld him,they were frightened at his coun-tenance.

50All of them were alarmed, andtrembled. They cried out after thatsheep; and to the other sheep whohad been with him, and who wasin the midst of them, saying, Weare not able to stand before ourLord, or to look upon him.

51Then that sheep who conductedthem went away, and ascendedthe top of the rock;

52When the rest of the sheep beganto grow blind, and to wander fromthe path which he had shownthem; but he knew it not.

53Their Lord however was movedwith great indignation againstthem; and when that sheep hadlearned what had happened,

55Which had become blind;56And had wandered from his path.As soon as they beheld him, theyfeared, and trembled at his pres-ence;

57And became desirous of return-ing to their fold,

58Then that sheep, taking with himother sheep, went to those whichhad wandered.

59And afterwards began to killthem. They were terrified at hiscountenance. Then he causedthose which had wandered toreturn; who went back to theirfold.

60I likewise saw there in the vision,that this sheep became a man,built a housea for the Lord of thesheep, and made them all stand inthe house.

61I perceived also that the sheepwhich proceeded to meet thissheep, their conductor, died. Isaw, too, that all the great sheepperished, while smaller ones roseup in their place, entered into apasture, and approached a river ofwater.b

62Then that sheep, their conductor,who became a man, was separatedfrom them, and died.

63All the sheep sought after him,and cried for him with bitter lam-entation.

64I saw likewise that they ceased tocry after that sheep, and passedover the river of water.

65And that there arose other sheep,all of whom conducted them,c

instead of those who were dead,and who had previously con-ducted them.

66Then I saw that the sheep enteredinto a goodly place, and a territorydelectable and glorious.

67I saw also that they became sati-ated; that their house was in themidst of a delectable territory; andthat sometimes their eyes wereopened, and that sometimes theywere blind; until another sheepd

arose and conducted them. Hebrought them all back; and theireyes were opened.

68Then dogs, foxes, and wild boarsbegan to devour them, until againanother sheepe arose, the masterof the flock, one of themselves, aram, to conduct them. This rambegan to butt on every side thosedogs, foxes, and wild boars, untilthey all perished.

69[And that sheep opened] hiseyes, and saw the ram in the midstof them, who had laid aside hisglory.

70And he began to strike the sheep,treading upon them, and behavinghimself without dignity.

71Then their Lord sent the formersheep again to a still differentsheep,a and raised him up to be aram, and to conduct them insteadof that sheep who had laid asidehis glory.

72Going therefore to him, and con-versing with him alone, he raisedup that ram, and made him aprince and leader of the flock. Allthe time that the dogsb troubledthe sheep,

73The first ram paid respect to thislatter ram.

74Then the latter ram arose, andfled away from before his face.And I saw that those dogs causedthe first ram to fall.

75But the latter ram arose, and con-ducted the smaller sheep.

76That ram likewise begat manysheep, and died.

77Then there was a smaller sheep,ca ram, instead of him, whichbecame a prince and leader, con-ducting the flock.

78And the sheep increased in size,and multiplied.

79And all the dogs, foxes, and wildboars feared, and fled away fromhim.

80That ram also struck and killedall the wild beasts, so that theycould not again prevail in the

midst of the sheep, nor at any timeever snatch them away.

81And that house was made largeand wide; a lofty tower beingbuilt upon it by the sheep, for theLord of the sheep.

82The house was low, but the towerwas elevated and very high.

83Then the Lord of the sheep stoodupon that tower, and caused a fulltable to approach before him.

84Again I saw that those sheepwandered, and went various ways,forsaking that their house;

85And that their Lord called tosome among them, whom he sentdto them.

86But these the sheep began to kill.And when one of them was savedfrom slaughtere he leaped, andcried out against those who weredesirous of killing him.

87But the Lord of the sheep deliv-ered him from their hands, andmade him ascend to him, andremain with him.

88He sent also many others tothem, to testify, and with lamenta-tions to exclaim against them.

89Again I saw, when some of themforsook the house of their Lord,and his tower; wandering on allsides, and growing blind,

90I saw that the Lord of the sheepmade a great slaughter among

them in their pasture, until theycried out to him in consequenceo f t h a t s l a u g h t e r. T h e n h edeparted from the place of hishabitation, and left them in thepower of lions, tigers, wolves, andthe zeebt,a and in the power offoxes, and of every beast.

91And the wild beasts began to tearthem.

92I saw, too, that he forsook thehouse of their fathers, and theirtower; giving them all into thepower of lions to tear and devourthem; into the power of everybeast.

93Then I began to cry out with allmy might, imploring the Lord ofthe sheep, and showing him howthe sheep were devoured by allthe beasts of prey.

94But he looked on in silence,rejoicing that they were devoured,swallowed up, and carried off;and leaving them in the power ofevery beast for food. He calledalso seventy shepherds, andresigned to them the care of thesheep, that they might overlookthem;

95Saying to them and to their asso-ciates, Every one of you hencefor-wards overlook the sheep, andwhatsoever I command you, do;and I will deliver them to younumbered.

96I will tell you which of themshall be slain; these destroy. Andhe delivered the sheep to them.

97Then he called to another, andsaid, Understand, and watcheverything which the shepherdsshall do to these sheep; for manymore of them shall perish than Ihave commanded.

98Of every excess and slaughter,which the shepherds shall com-mit, there shall be an account; as,how many may have perished bymy command, and how manythey may have destroyed of theirown heads.

99Of all the destruction broughtabout by each of the shepherdsthere shall be an account; andaccording to the number I willcause a recital to be made beforem e , h o w m a n y t h e y h a v edestroyed of their own heads, andhow many they have delivered upto destruction, that I may havethis testimony against them; that Imay know all their proceedings;and that, delivering the sheep tothem, I may see what they will do;whether they will act as I havecommanded them, or not.

100Of this, however, they shall beignorant; neither shall you makeany explanation to them, neithershall you reprove them; but thereshall be an account of all thedestruction done by them in theirrespective seasons. 101And they left the sheep in thepower of the lions, so that verymany of them were devoured andswallowed up by lions and tigers;and wild boars preyed upon them.That tower they burnt, and over-threw that house.

102Then I grieved extremely onaccount of the tower, and becausethe house of the sheep was over-thrown.

103Neither was I afterwards able toperceive whether they againentered that house.

104The shepherds likewise, andtheir associates, delivered them toall the wild beasts, that they mightdevour them. Each of them in hisseason, according to his number,was delivered up; each of them,one with another, was describedin a book, how many of them, onewith another, were destroyed, in abook.

106Then I began to weep, and wasgreatly indignant, on account ofthe sheep.

107In like manner also I saw in thevision him who wrote, how hewrote down one, destroyed by thesh eph e r d s , ev e r y d ay. Heascended, remained, and exhib-ited each of his books to the Lordof the sheep, containing all whichthey had done, and all which eachof them had made away with;

108And all which they had deliv-ered up to destruction.

109He took the book up in hishands, read it , sealed it , anddeposited it.

110After this, I saw shepherds over-looking for twelve hours.

111And behold three of the sheepa

departed, arrived, went in; andbegan building all which wasfallen down of that house.

112But the wild boarsb hinderedthem, although they prevailed not.

113Again they began to build asbefore, and raised up that tower,which was called a lofty tower.

114And again they began to placebefore the tower a table, withevery impure and unclean kind ofbread upon it.

115Moreover also all the sheepwere blind, and could not see, aswere the shepherds likewise.

116Thus were they delivered up tothe shepherds for a great destruc-tion, who trod them under foot,and devoured them.

117Yet was their Lord silent, untilall the sheep in the field weredestroyed. The shepherds and thesheep were all mixed together; butthey did not save them from thepower of the beasts.

at the residence of the Lord of thesheep. He petitioned him forthem, and prayed, pointing outevery act of the shepherds, andtestifying before him against themall. Then taking the book, hed e p o s i t e d i t w i t h h i m , a n ddeparted.

CHAPTER 891And I observed during the time,that thus thirty-sevena shepherdswere overlooking, all of whomfinished in their respective peri-ods as the f i rs t . Others thenreceived them into their hands,that they might overlook them intheir respective periods, everyshepherd in his own period.

2Afterwards I saw in the vision,tha t a l l the b i rds of heavenarrived; eagles, the avest, kitesand ravens. The eagle instructedthem all.

3They began to devour the sheep,to peck out their eyes, and to eatup their bodies.

4The sheep then cried out; for theirbodies were devoured by thebirds.

5I also cried out, and groaned inmy sleep against the shepherdwhich overlooked the flock.

6And I looked, while the sheepwere eaten up by the dogs, by the

eagles, and by the kites. They nei-ther left them their body, nor theirskin, nor their muscles, until theirbones alone remained; until theirbones fell upon the ground. Andthe sheep became diminished.

7I observed likewise during thetime, that twenty-three shepherdsb

were overlooking; who completedin their respective periods fifty-eight periods.

8Then were small lambs born ofthose white sheep; who began toopen their eyes and to see, cryingout to the sheep.

9The sheep, however, cried not outto them, neither did they hearwhat they uttered to them; butwere deaf, blind, and obdurate inthe greatest degrees.

10I saw in the vision that ravensflew down upon those lambs;

11That they seized one of them; andthat tearing the sheep in pieces,they devoured them.

12I saw also, that the horns grewupon those lambs; and that theravens lighted down upon theirhorns.

13I saw, too, that a large hornsprouted out on an animal amongthe sheep, and that their eyes wereopened.

14He looked at them. Their eyeswere wide open; and he cried outto them.

15Then the dabelaa saw him; all ofwhom ran to him.

16And besides this, all the eagles,the avest, the ravens and the kites,were still carrying off the sheep,f lying down upon them, anddevouring them. The sheep weresilent, but the dabela lamentedand cried out.

17Then the ravens contended, andstruggled with them.

18They wished among them tobreak his horn; but they prevailednot over him.

19I looked on them, until the shep-herds, the eagles, the avest, andthe kites came.

20Who cried out to the ravens tobreak the horn of the dabela; tocontend with him; and to kill him.But he struggled with them, andcried out, that help might come tohim.

21Then I perceived that the mancame who had written down thenames of the shepherds, and whoascended up before the Lord ofthe sheep.

22He brought assis tance, andcaused every one to see himdescending to the help of thedabela.

23I perceived likewise that theLord of the sheep came to them inwrath, while all those who sawhim fled away; all fell down in histabernacle before his face; whileall the eagles, the avest, ravens,and kites assembled, and broughtwith them all the sheep of thefield.

24All came together, and strove tobreak the horn of the dabela.

25Then I saw, that the man, whowrote the book at the word of theLord, opened the book of destruc-tion, of that destruction which thelast twelve shepherdsb wrought;and pointed out before the Lord ofthe sheep, that they destroyedmore than those who precededthem.

26I saw also that the Lord of thesheep came to them, and taking inhis hand the sceptre of his wrathseized the earth, which becamerent asunder; while all the beastsand birds of heaven fell from thesheep, and sunk into the earth,which closed over them.

27I saw, too, that a large sword wasgiven to the sheep, who wentforth against all the beasts of thefield to slay them.

28But all the beasts and birds ofheaven fled away from beforetheir face.

29And I saw a throne erected in adelectable land;

30Upon this sat the Lord of thesheep, who received all the sealedbooks;

31Which were open before him.32Then the Lord called the firstseven whi te ones , and com-manded them to bring before himthe first of the first stars, whichpreceded the stars whose formpartly resembled that of horses;the first star, which fell downfirst; and they brought them allbefore him.

33And he spoke to the man whowrote in his presence, who wasone of the seven white ones, say-ing, Take those seventy shep-herds, to whom I delivered up thesheep, and who receiving themkilled more of them than I com-manded. Behold, I saw them allbound, and standing before him.First came on the trial of the stars,which, being judged, and foundguilty, went to the place of pun-ishment. They thrust them into aplace, deep, and full of flamingfire, and full of pillars of fire.Then the seventy shepherds werejudged, and being found guilty,were thrust into the f lamingabyss.

34At that time likewise I perceived,that one abyss was thus opened inthe midst of the earth, which wasfull of fire.

35And to this were brought theblind sheep; which being judged,

and found guilty, were all thrustinto that abyss of fire on the earth,and burnt.

36The abyss was on the right ofthat house.

37And I saw the sheep burning, andtheir bones consuming.

38I stood beholding him immergethat ancient house, while theybrought out its pillars, every plantin it, and the ivory infolding it.They brought it out, and depositedit in a place on the right side ofthe earth.

39I also saw, that the Lord of thesheep produced a new house,great, and loftier than the former,which he bound by the former cir-cular spot. All its pillars werenew, and its ivory new, as well asmore abundant than the formerancient ivory, which he hadbrought out.

40And while all the sheep whichwere left were in the midst of it,all the beasts of the earth, and allthe birds of heaven, fell down andworshipped them, petitioningthem, and obeying them in every-thing.

41Then those three, who wereclothed in white, and who, hold-ing me by my hand, had beforecaused me to ascend, while thehand of him who spoke held me;raised me up, and placed me inthe midst of the sheep, before thejudgment took place.

42The sheep were all white, withwool long and pure. Then all whohad per i shed , and had beendestroyed, every beast of the field,and every bird of heaven, assem-bled in that house: while the Lordof the sheep rejoiced with greatjoy, because all were good, andhad come back again to his dwell-ing.

43And I saw that they laid downthe sword which had been givento the sheep, and returned it to hishouse, sealing it up in the pres-ence of the Lord.

44All the sheep would have beeninclosed in that house, had it beencapable of containing them; andthe eyes of all were open, gazingon the good One; nor was thereone among them who did notbehold him.

45I likewise perceived that thehouse was l a rge , wide , andextremely full. I saw, too, that awhite cow was born, whose hornswere great; and that all the beastsof the field, and all the birds ofheaven, were alarmed at him, andentreated him at all times.

46Then I saw that the nature of allof them was changed, and thatthey became white cows;

47And that the first, who was in themidst of them, spoke, when thatword becamea a large beast, upon

the head of which were great andblack horns;

48While the Lord of the sheeprejoiced over them, and over allthe cows.

49I lay down in the midst of them: Iawoke; and saw the whole. This isthe vision which I saw, lyingdown and waking. Then I blessedthe Lord of righteousness, andgave glory to Him.

50Afterwards I wept abundantly,nor did my tears cease, so that Ibecame incapable of enduring it.While I was looking on, theyflowed on account of what I saw;for all was come and gone by;every individual circumstancerespecting the conduct of man-kind was seen by me.

51In that night I remembered myformer dream; and therefore weptand was troubled, because I hadseen that vision.

CHAPTER 901And now, my son Mathusala, callto me al l your brethren, andassemble for me all the childrenof your mother; for a voice callsme, and the spirit is poured outupon me, that I may show youeverything which shall happen toyou for ever.

2Then Mathusala went, called tohim all his brethren, and assem-bled his kindred.

3And conversing with all his chil-dren in truth,

4Enoch said, Hear, my children,every word of your father, and lis-ten in uprightness to the voice ofmy mouth; for I would gain yourattention, while I address you. Mybeloved, be attached to integrity,and walk in it.

5Approach not integrity with adouble heart; nor be associatedwith double-minded men: butwalk, my children, in righteous-ness, which will conduct you ingood paths; and be truth yourcompanion.

6For I know, that oppression willexist and prevail on earth; that onearth great punishment shall in theend take place; and that thereshall be a consummation of alliniquity, which shall be cut offfrom its root, and every fabricraised by it shall pass away. Iniq-uity, however, shall again berenewed, and consummated onearth. Every act of crime, andevery act of oppression and impi-e ty, sha l l be a s econd t imeembraced.

7When therefore iniquity, sin, blas-phemy, tyranny, and every evilwork, shall increase, and whent r ansgress ion , impie ty, anduncleanness also shall increase,then upon them all shall greatpunishment be inflicted fromheaven.

8The holy Lord shall go forth inwrath, and upon them all shallgreat punishment from heaven beinflicted.

9The holy Lord shall go forth inwrath, and with punishment, thathe may execute judgment uponearth.

10In those days oppression shall becut off from its roots, and iniquitywith fraud shall be eradicated,perishing from under heaven.

11Every place of strengtha shall besurrendered with its inhabitants;with fire shall it be burnt. Theyshall be brought from every partof the earth, and be cast into ajudgment of fire. They shall per-ish in wrath, and by a judgmentoverpowering them for ever.

12Righteousness shall be raised upfrom slumber; and wisdom shallbe raised up, and conferred uponthem.

13Then shall the roots of iniquitybe cut off; sinners perish by thesword; and blasphemers be anni-hilated everywhere.

14Those who meditate oppression,and those who blaspheme, by thesword shall perish.

15And now, my children, I willdescribe and point out to you thepath of righteousness and the pathof oppression.

16I will again point them out toyou, that you may know what is tocome.

17Hear now, my children, and walkin the path of righteousness, but

shun that of oppression; for allwho walk in the path of iniquityshall perish for ever.

CHAPTER 911That which was written by Enoch.He wrote all this instruction ofwisdom for every man of dignity,and every judge of the earth; forall my children who shall dwellupon earth, and for subsequentgenerations, conducting them-selves uprightly and peaceably.

2Let not your spirit be grieved onaccount of the times; for the holy,the Great One, has prescribed aperiod to all.

3Let the righteous man arise fromslumber; let him arise, and pro-ceed in the path of righteousness,in a l l i t s pa ths ; and le t h imadvance in goodness and eternalclemency. Mercy shall be showedto the righteous man; upon himshall be conferred integrity andpower for ever. In goodness andin righteousness shall he exist,and shall walk in everlasting light;but sin shall perish in eternaldarkness, nor be seen from thattime forward for evermore.

CHAPTER 921After this, Enoch began to speakfrom a book.

2And Enoch said, Concerning thechildren of righteousness, con-cerning the elect of the world, andconcerning the plant of righteous-ness and integrity,

3Concerning these things will Ispeak, and these things will Iexplain to you, my children: I whoam Enoch. In consequence of thatwhich has been shown to me,from my heavenly vision andfrom the voice of the holy angelsa

have I acquired knowledge; andfrom the tablet of heaven have Iacquired understanding.

4Enoch then began to speak from abook, and said, I have been bornthe seventh in the first week,while judgment and righteous-ness wait with patience.

5But after me, in the second week,great wickedness shall arise, andfraud shall spring forth.

6In that week the end of the firstshall take place, in which man-kind shall be safe.b

7But when the first is completed,iniquity shall grow up; and duringthe second week he shall executethe decreec upon sinners.

8Afterwards, in the third week,during its completion, a mand of

the plant of righteous judgmentshall be selected; and after himthe Planta of righteousness shallcome for ever.

9Subsequently, in the fourth week,during its completion, the visionsof the holy and the righteous shallbe seen, the order of generationafter generation shall take place,and a habitation shall be made forthem. Then in the fifth week, dur-ing its completion, the house ofglory and of dominionb shall beerected for ever.

10After that, in the sixth week, allthose who are in it shall be dark-ened, the hearts of all of themshall be forgetful of wisdom, andin it shall a Manc arise and comeforth.

11And during its completion Heshall burn the house of dominionwith fire, and all the race of theelect root shall be dispersed.d

12Afterwards, in the seventh week,a perverse generation shall arise;

abundant shall be its deeds, andall its deeds perverse. During itscompletion, the righteous shall beselected from the everlasting plantof righteousness; and to themshall be given the sevenfold doc-trine of his whole creation.

13Afterwards there shall be anotherweek, the eighthe of righteous-ness, to which shall be given asword to execute judgment andjustice upon all oppressors.

14Sinners shall be delivered up intothe hands of the righteous, whodur ing i t s comple t ion sha l lacquire habitations by their righ-teousness; and the house of thegreat King shall be established forcelebrations for ever. After this, inthe ninth week, shall the judgmentof righteousness be revealed tothe whole world.

15Every work of the ungodly shalldisappear from the whole earth;the world shall be marked fordestruction; and all men shall beon the watch for the path of integ-rity.

16And after this, on the seventhday of the tenth week, there shallbe an everlasting judgment, whichshall be executed upon the Watch-ers; and a spacious eternal heavenshall spring forth in the midst ofthe angels.

shall appear; and all the celestialpowers shall shine with seven-fold splendour for ever. After-wards likewise shall there bemany weeks, which shall exter-nally exist in goodness and inrighteousness.

18Neither shall sin be named therefor ever and for ever.

19Who is there of all the childrenof men, capable of hearing thevoice of the Holy One withoutemotion?

20Who is there capable of thinkinghis thoughts? Who capable ofcontemplating all the workman-ship of heaven? Who of compre-hending the deeds of heaven?

21He may behold its animation, butnot its spirit. He may be capableof conversing respecting it, butnot of ascending to it. He may seeall the boundaries of these things,and meditate upon them; but hecan make nothing like them.

22Who of all men is able to under-stand the breadth and length ofthe earth?

23By whom have been seen thedimensions of all these things? Isit every man who is capable ofcomprehending the extent ofheaven; what its elevation is, andby what it is supported?

24How many are the numbers ofthe stars; and where all the lumi-naries remain at rest?

CHAPTER 931And now let me exhort you, mychildren, to love righteousness,and to walk in it; for the paths ofr ighteousness are worthy ofacceptation; but the paths of iniq-uity shall suddenly fail, and bediminished.

2To men of note in their generationthe paths of oppression and deathare revealed; but they keep farfrom them, and do not followthem.

3Now, too, let me exhort you whoare righteous, not to walk in thepaths of evil and oppression, norin the paths of death. Approachthem not, that you may not perish;but covet,

4And choose for yourselves righ-teousness, and a good life.

5Walk in the paths of peace, thatyou may live, and be found wor-thy. Retain my words in yourinmost thoughts, and obliteratethem not from your hearts; for Iknow that sinners counsel men tocommit crime craftily. They arenot found in every place, nor doesevery counsel possess a little ofthem.

6Woe to those who build iniquityand oppression, and who lay thefoundation of fraud; for suddenlyshall they be subverted, and neverobtain peace.

houses be demolished, and by thesword shall they themselves fall.Those, too, who acquire gold andsilver, shall justly and suddenlyperish. Woe to you who are rich,for in your r iches have youtrusted; but from your riches youshall be removed; because youhave not remembered the MostHigh in the days of your prosper-ity.

8You have committed blasphemyand iniquity; and are destined tothe day of the effusion of blood,to the day of darkness, and to theday of the great judgment.

9This I will declare and point out toyou, that he who created you willdestroy you.

10When you fall, he will not showyou mercy; but your Creator willrejoice in your destruction.

11Let those, then, who shall berighteous among you in thosedays, detest sinners, and theungodly.

CHAPTER 941O that my eyes were clouds ofwater, that I might weep over you,and pour forth my tears like rain,and rest from the sorrow of myheart!

2Who has permitted you to hateand to transgress? Judgment shallovertake you, ye sinners.

3The righteous shall not fear thewicked; because God will againbring them into your power, that

you may avenge yourselves ofthem according to your pleasure.

4Woe to you who shall be so boundby execrations, that you cannot bereleased from them; the remedybeing far removed from you onaccount of your sins. Woe to youwho recompense your neighbourwith evil; for you shall be recom-pensed according to your works.

CHAPTER 951Wait in hope, you righteous; forsuddenly shall sinners perish frombefore you, and you shall exercisedominion over them, according toyour will.

2In the day of the sufferings of sin-ners your offspring shall be ele-vated, and lifted up like eagles.Your nest shall be more exaltedthan that of the avest; you shallascend, and enter into the cavitiesof the earth, and into the clefts ofthe rocks for ever, like conies,from the sight of the ungodly;

3Who shall groan over you, andweep like sirens.

5Woe to you who feed upon theglory of the corn, and drink thestrength of the deepest spring, andin the pride of your power treaddown the humble.

6Woe to you who drink water atpleasure; for suddenly shall yoube recompensed, consumed, andwithered, because you have for-saken the foundation of life.

7Woe to you who act iniquitously,fraudulently, and blasphemously;there shall be a remembranceagainst you for evil.

8Woe to you, powerful, who withpower strike down righteousness;for the day of your destructionshall come; while at that very timemany and good days shall be theportion of the righteous, even atthe period of your judgment.

CHAPTER 961The righteous are confident thatsinners will be disgraced, and per-ish in the day of iniquity.

2You shall yourselves be consciousof it ; for the Most High willremember your destruction, andthe angels shall rejoice over it.

What will you do, sinners? Andwhere will you fly in the day ofjudgment, when you shall hear thewords of the prayer of the righ-teous?

3You are not like them who in thisrespect witness against you; youare associates of sinners.

4In those days shall the prayers ofthe righteous come up before theLord. When the day of your judg-ment shall arrive; and every cir-cumstance of your iniquity berelated before the great and theholy One;

5Your faces shall be covered withs h am e ; w h i l e e v e r y d ee d ,strengthened by crime, shall berejected.

6Woe unto you, sinners, who in themidst of the sea, and on dry land,are those against whom an evilrecord exists. Woe to you whosquander silver and gold, notobtained in righteousness, andsay, We are rich, possess wealth,and have acquired everythingwhich we can desire.

7Now then will we do whatsoeverwe are disposed to do; for wehave amassed silver; our barns arefull, and the husbandmen of ourfamilies are like overflowingwater.

9And now I swear to you, crafty, aswell as simple ones; that you,often contemplating the earth, youwho are men, clothe yourselvesmore e legantly that marriedwomen, and both together moreso than unmarried ones,a every-where arraying yourselves in maj-esty, in magnificence, in authority,and in silver: but gold, purple,honour, and wealth, like water,flow away.

10Erudition therefore and wisdomare not theirs. Thus shall they per-ish, together with their riches,with all their glory, and with theirhonours;

11Whi le wi th d i sg race , wi thslaughter, and in extreme penury,shall their spirits be thrust into afurnace of fire.

12I have sworn to you, sinners, thatneither mountain nor hill has beeno r s h a l l b e s u b s e r v i e n t b t owoman.

13Neither in this way has crimebeen sent down to us upon earth,but men of their own heads haveinvented it; and greatly shall those

who give it efficiency be exe-crated.

14Barrenness shall not be previ-ously inflicted on woman; but onaccount of the work of her handsshall she die childless.

15I have sworn to you, sinners, bythe holy and the Great One, thatall your evil deeds are disclosedin the heavens; and that none ofyour oppressive acts are con-cealed and secret.

16Think not in your minds, neithersay in your hearts, that everycrime is not manifested and seen.In heaven it is daily written downbefore the Most High. Hencefor-wards shall it be manifested; forevery act of oppression which youcommit shall be daily recorded,until the period of your condem-nation.

17Woe to you, simple ones, for youshall perish in your simplicity. Tothe wise you will not listen, andthat which is good you shall notobtain.

18Now therefore know that you aredestined to the day of destruc-tion; nor hope that sinners shalllive; but in process of time youshall die; for you are not markedfor redemption;

19But are destined to the day of thegreat judgment, to the day of dis-tress, and the extreme ignominyof your souls.

blood. Whence is it that you feedon good things, drink, and aresatiated? Is it not because ourLord, the Most High, has abun-dantly supplied every good thingupon earth? To you there shall notbe peace.

21Woe to you who love the deedsof iniquity. Why do you hope forthat which is good? Know thatyou shall be given up into thehands of the righteous; who shallcut off your necks, slay you, andshow you no compassion.

22Woe to you who rejoice in thetrouble of the righteous; for agrave shall not be dug for you.

23Woe to you who frustrate theword of the righteous; for to youthere shall be no hope of life.

24Woe to you who write down theword of falsehood, and the wordof the wicked; for their falsehoodthey record, that they may hearand not forget folly.

25To them there shall be no peace;but they shall surely die suddenly.

CHAPTER 971Woe to them who act impiously,who laud and honour the word offalsehood. You have been lost inperdition; and have never led avirtuous life.

2Woe to you who change the wordsof integrity. They transgressagainst the everlasting decree;a

3And cause the heads of those whoare not sinners to be troddendown upon the earth.

4In those days you, O righteous,shall have been deemed worthy ofhaving your prayers rise up inremembrance; and shall havedeposi ted them in testimonybefore the angels, that they mightrecords the sins of the sinners inthe presence of the Most High.

5In those days the nations shall beoverthrown; but the families ofthe nations shall rise again in theday of perdition.

6In those days they who becomepregnant shall go forth, carry offtheir children, and forsake them.Their offspring shall slip fromthem, and while suckling themshall they forsake them; they shallnever return to them, and neverinstruct their beloved.

7Again I swear to you, sinners, thatcrime has been prepared for theday of blood, which never ceases.

8They shall worship stones, andengrave go lden , s i lve r, andwooden images. They shall wor-ship impure spirits, demons, andevery idol, in temples; but no helpshall be obtained for them. 9But in those days blessed shallthey be, to whom the word of wis-dom is delivered; who point outand pursue the path of the MostHigh; who walk in the way ofrighteousness, and who act notimpiously with the impious.

10They shall be saved.11Woe to you who expand thecrime of your neighbour; for inhell shall you be slain.

12Woe to you who lay the founda-tion of sin and deceit, and who arebitter on earth; for on it shall yoube consumed.

13Woe to you who build yourhouses by the labour of others,every pa r t o f wh ich i s con-structed with brick, and with thestone of crime; I tell you, that youshall not obtain peace.

14Woe to you who despise theextent of the everlasting inherit-ance of your fathers, while yoursouls follow after idols; for to youthere shall be no tranquility.

CHAPTER 981In those days shall fathers bestruck down with their children inthe presence of each other; andbrethren with their brethren shallfall dead: until a river shall flowfrom their blood.

2For a man shall not restrain hishand from his children, nor fromhis children’s children; his mercywill be to kill them.

3Nor shall the sinner restrain hishand from his honoured brother.From the dawn of day to the set-ting sun shall the slaughter con-tinue. The horse shall wade up tohis breast, and the chariot shallsink to its axle, in the blood ofsinners.

3Whether or not the righteoussleep securely, wise men shallthen truly perceive.

4And the sons of the earth shallunderstand every word of thatbook, knowing that their richescannot save them in the ruin oftheir crimes.

5Woe to you, sinners, when youshall be afflicted on account of therighteous in the day of the greattrouble; shall be burnt in the fire;and be recompensed according toyour deeds.

6Woe to you, perverted in heart,who are watchful to obtain anaccurate knowledge of evil, and todiscover terrors. No one shallassist you.

7Woe to you, sinners; for with thewords of your mouths, and withthe work of your hands, have youacted impiously; in the flame of ablazing fire shall you be burnt.

8And now know, that the angelsshall inquire into your conduct inheaven; of the sun, the moon, andthe s tars , shal l they inquirerespecting your sins; for uponearth you exercise jurisdictionover the righteous.

9Every cloud shall bear witnessagainst you, the snow, the dew,and the rain: for all of them shallbe withholden from you, that theymay not descend upon you, nor

10Now then bring gifts of saluta-tion to the rain; that, not beingwithholden, it may descend uponyou; and to the dew, if it hasreceived from you gold and silver.But when the frost, snow, cold,every snowy wind, and every suf-fering belonging to them, fallupon you, in those days you willbe utterly incapable of standingbefore them.

CHAPTER 1001Attentively consider heaven, allyou progeny of heaven, and allthe works of the Most High; fearhim, nor conduct yourselves crim-inally before him.

2If He shut up the windows ofheaven, restraining the rain anddew, that it may not descend uponthe earth on your account, whatwill you do?

3And if He send his wrath uponyou, and upon all your deeds, youare not they who can supplicatehim; you who utter against hisrighteousness, language proudand powerful. To you there shallbe no peace.

4Do you not see the commandersof ships, how their vessels aretossed about by the waves, torn topieces by the winds, and exposedto the greatest peril?

7Is it not at his rebuke dried up,and alarmed; while all its fishwith everything contained in itdie? And will not you, sinners,who are on earth, fear him? Is notHe the maker of heaven and earth,and of all things which are inthem?

8And who has given erudition andwisdom to all that move progres-sive upon the earth, and over thesea?

9Are not the commanders of shipsterrified at the ocean? And shallnot sinners be terrified at the MostHigh?

CHAPTER 1021In those days, when He shall castthe calamity of fire upon you,whither will you fly, and wherewill you be safe?

2And when He sends forth hisword against you, are you notspared, and terrified?

3All the luminaries are agitatedwith great fear; and all the earth is

spared, while it trembles, and suf-fers anxiety.

4All the angels fulfill the com-mands received by them, and aredesirous of being concealed fromthe presence of the great Glory;while the children of the earth arealarmed and troubled.

5But you, sinners, are for everaccursed; to you there shall be nopeace.

6Fear not, souls of the righteous;but wait with patient hope for theday of your death in righteous-ness. Grieve not, because yoursouls descend in great trouble,with groaning, lamentation, andsorrow, to the receptacle of thedead. In your lifetime your bodieshave not received a recompense inproportion to your goodness, butin the period of your existencehave sinners existed; in the periodof execration and of punishment.

7And when you die, sinners sayconcerning you, As we die, therighteous die. What profit havethey in their works? Behold, likeus, they expire in sorrow and indarkness. What advantage havethey over us? Henceforward arewe equal. What will be withintheir grasp, and what before theireyes for ever? For behold they aredead; and never will they againperceive the light. I say unto you,sinners, You have been satisfiedwith meat and drink, with humanplunder and rapine, with sin, withthe acquisition of wealth and with

CHAPTER 1031But now I swear to you, righteous,by the greatness of his splendourand his glory; by his illustriouskingdom and by his majesty, toyou I swear, that I comprehendthis mystery; that I have read thetablet of heaven, have seen thewriting of the holy ones, and havediscovered what is written andimpressed on it concerning you.

2I have seen that all goodness, joy,and glory have been prepared foryou, and been written down forthe spirits of them who die emi-nently righteous and good. To youit shall be given in return for yourtroubles; and your portion of hap-piness shall far exceed the portionof the living.

3The spirits of you who die in righ-teousness shall exist and rejoice.Their spirits shall exult; and theirremembrance shall be before theface of the Mighty One from gen-eration to generation. Nor shallthey now fear disgrace.

4Woe to you, sinners, when you diein your sins; and they, who arelike you, say respecting you,Blessed are these sinners. They

have lived out their whole period;and now they die in happiness andin wealth. Distress and slaughterthey knew not while alive; inhonour they die; nor ever in theirlifetime did judgment overtakethem.

5But has it not been shown to them,that, when to the receptacle of thedead their souls shall be made todescend, their evil deeds shallbecome their greatest torment?Into darkness, into the snare, andinto the flame, which shall burn tothe great judgment, shall theirspirits enter; and the great judg-ment shall take effect for ever andfor ever.

6Woe to you; for to you there shallbe no peace. Neither can you sayto the righteous, and to the goodwho are alive, In the days of ourtrouble have we been afflicted;every manner of trouble have weseen, and many evil things havesuffered.

7Our spirits have been consumed,lessened, and diminished.

8We have perished; nor has therebeen a possibility of help for us inword or in deed: we have foundnone, but have been tormentedand destroyed.

9We have not expected to live dayafter day.

10We hoped indeed to have beenthe head;

11But we have become the tail. Wehave been afflicted, when we

12Those have exercised dominionover us who detest and who goadus; and to those who hate us havewe humbled our neck; but theyhave shown no compass iontowards us.

13We have been desirous of escap-ing from them, that we might flyaway and be at rest; but we havefound no place to which we couldfly, and be secure from them. Wehave sought an asylum withprinces in our distress, and havecr ied out to those who weredevouring us; but our cry has notbeen regarded, nor have they beendisposed to hear our voice;

14But rather to assist those whoplunder and devour us; those whodimin i sh us , and h ide the i roppression; who remove not theiryoke from us, but devour, ener-vate, and slay us; who conceal ourslaughter, nor remember that theyhave lifted up their hands againstus.

CHAPTER 1041I swear to you, righteous, that inheaven the angels record yourgoodness before the glory of theMighty One.

2Wait with patient hope; for for-merly you have been disgracedwith evil and with affliction; butnow shall you shine like the lumi-

naries of heaven. You shall beseen, and the gates of heaven shallbe opened to you. Your cries havecried for judgment; and it hasappeared to you; for an account ofa l l your suffe r ings sha l l berequired from the princes, andfrom every one who has assistedyour plunderers.

3Wait with patient hope; nor relin-quish your confidence; for greatjoy shall be yours, like that of theangels in heaven. Conduct your-selves as you may, still you shallnot be concealed in the day of thegreat judgment. You shall not befound like sinners; and eternalcondemnation shall be far fromyou, so long as the world exists.

4And now fear not, righteous,when you see sinners flourishingand prosperous in their ways.

5Be not associates with them; butkeep yourselves at a distance fromtheir oppression; be you associ-ated with the host of heaven. You,sinners, say, All our transgres-sions shall not be taken accountof, and be recorded. But all yourtransgressions shall be recordeddaily.

6And be assured by me, that lightand darkness, day and night,behold all your transgressions. Benot impious in your thoughts; lienot; surrender not the word ofuprightness; lie not against theword of the holy and the mightyOne; glorify not your idols; for allyour lying and all your impiety is

7Now will I point out a mystery:Many sinners shall turn and trans-gress against the word of upright-ness.

8They shall speak evil things; theyshall utter falsehood; executegreat undertakings;a and com-pose books in their own words.But when they shall write all mywords correctly in their own lan-guages,

9They shall neither change ordiminish them; but shall writethem all correctly; all which fromthe first I have uttered concerningthem.b

10Another mystery also I point out.To the righteous and the wiseshall be given books of joy, ofintegrity, and of great wisdom. Tothem shall books be given, inwhich they shall believe;

11And in which they shall rejoice.And all the righteous shall berewarded, who from these shallacquire the knowledge of everyupright path.

CHAPTER 104A1In those days, saith the Lord, theyshall call to the children of theearth, and make them listen totheir wisdom. Show them that youare their leaders;

2And that remuneration shall takeplace over the whole earth; for Iand my Son will for ever holdcommunion with them in thepaths of uprightness, while theyare still alive. Peace shall beyours. Rejoice, children of integ-rity, in the truth.

CHAPTER 1051After a time, my son Mathusalatook a wife for his son Lamech.

2She became pregnant by him, andbrought forth a child, the flesh ofwhich was as white as snow, andred as a rose; the hair of whosehead was white like wool, andlong; and whose eyes were beauti-ful. When he opened them, heilluminated all the house, like thesun; the whole house aboundedwith light.

3And when he was taken from thehand of the midwife, Lamech hisfather became afraid of him; andflying away came to his ownfather Mathusala, and said, I havebegotten a son, unlike to otherchildren. He is not human; but,resembling the offspring of theangels of heaven, is of a differentnature from ours , being alto-gether unlike to us.

6And now, my fa ther, le t meentreat and request you to go toour progenitor Enoch, and learnfrom him the truth; for his resi-dence is with the angels.

7When Mathusala heard the wordsof his son, he came to me at theextremities of the earth; for hehad been informed that I wasthere: and he cried out.

8I heard his voice, and went to himsaying, Behold, I am here, myson; since you have come to me.

9He answered and said, On accountof a great event have I come toyou; and on account of a sight dif-ficult to be comprehended have Iapproached you.

10And now, my father, hear me; forto my son Lamech a child hasbeen born, who resembles nothim; and whose nature is not likethe nature of man. His colour iswhiter than snow; he is redderthan the rose; the hair of his headis whiter than white wool; hiseyes are like the rays of the sun;and when he opened them he illu-minated the whole house.

11When also he was taken from thehand of the midwife,

12His father Lamech feared, andfled to me, believing not that thechild belonged to him, but that heresembled the angels of heaven.And behold I am come to you,that you might point out to me thetruth.

13Then I, Enoch, answered andsaid, The Lord will effect a newthing upon the earth. This have Iexplained, and seen in a vision. Ihave shown you that in the gener-ations of Jared my father, thosewho were from heaven disre-garded the word of the Lord.Behold they committed crimes;laid aside their class, and inter-mingled with women. With themalso they transgressed; marriedwith them, and begot children.a

14A great destruction thereforeshall come upon all the earth; adeluge, a great destruction, shalltake place in one year.

15This child which is born to yourson shall survive on the earth, andhis three sons shall be saved withhim. When all mankind who areon the earth shall die, he shall besafe.

16And his posterity shall beget onthe earth giants, not spiritual, butcarnal. Upon the earth shall agreat punishment be inflicted, andit shall be washed from all corrup-tion. Now therefore inform your

son Lamech, that he who is bornis his child in truth; and he shallcall his name Noah, for he shallbe to you a survivor. He and hischildren shall be saved from thecorruption which shall take placein the world; from all the sin andfrom all the iniquity which shallbe consummated on earth in hisdays. Afterwards shall greaterimpiety take place than that whichhad been before consummated onthe earth; for I am acquaintedwith holy mysteries, which theLord himself has discovered andexplained to me; and which I haveread in the tablets of heaven.

17In them I saw it written, that thegeneration after generation shalltransgress, until a righteous raceshall arise; until transgression andcrime perish from off the earth;until all goodness come upon it.

18And now, my son, go tell yourson Lamech,

19That the child which is born ishis child in truth; and that there isno deception.

20When Mathusala heard the wordof his father Enoch, who hadshown him every secret thing, hereturned with understanding, andcalled the name of that childNoah; because he was to consolethe earth on account of all itsdestruction.

21Another book, which Enochwrote for his son Mathusala, andfor those who should come afterhim, and preserve their purity of

conduct in the latter days. You,who have laboured, shall wait inthose days, until the evil doers beconsumed, and the power of theguilty be annihilated. Wait, untilsin pass away; for their namesshall be blotted out of the holyb o o k s ; t h e i r s e e d s h a l l b edestroyed, and their spirits slain.They shall cry out and lament inthe invisible waste, and in the bot-tomless fire shall they burn.a

There I perceived, as it were, acloud which could not be seenthrough; for from the depth of it Iwas unable to look upwards. Ibeheld also a flame of fire blazingbrightly, and, as it were, glitteringmountains whirled around, andagitated from side to side.

22Then I inquired of one of theholy angels who was with me, andsaid, What is this splendid object?For it is not heaven, but a flame offire alone which blazes; and in itthere is the clamour of exclama-tion, of woe, and of great suffer-ing.

23He said, There, into that placewhich you behold, shall be thrustthe spirits of sinners and blas-phemers; of those who shall doevil, and who shall pervert allwhich God has spoken by themouth of the prophets; all which

they ought to do. For respectingthese things there shall be writ-ings and impressions above inheaven, that the angels may readthem and know what shall happenboth to sinners and to the spiritsof the humble; to those who havesuffered in their bodies, but havebeen rewarded by God; who havebeen in ju r ious ly t r ea ted bywicked men; who have lovedGod; who have been attached nei-ther to gold nor silver, nor to anygood thing in the world, but havegiven their bodies to torment;

24To those who from the period oftheir birth have not been covet-ous of earthly riches; but haveregarded themselves as a breathpassing away.

25Such has been their conduct; andmuch has the Lord tried them; andtheir spirits have been found pure,that they might bless his name.All their blessings have I relatedin a book; and He has rewardedthem; for they have been found tolove heaven with an everlastingaspiration. God has said, Whilethey have been trodden down bywicked men, they have heardfrom them revilings and blasphe-

mies; and have been ignomini-ously treated, while they wereblessing me. And now will I callthe spirits of the good from thegeneration of l ight, and willchange those who have been bornin darkness; who have not in theirbodies been recompensed withglory, as their faith may have mer-ited.

26I will bring them into the splen-did light of those who love myholy name: and I will place eachof them on a throne of glory, ofglory peculiarly his own, and theyshall be at rest during unnum-bered periods. Righteous is thejudgment of God;

27For to the faithful shall he givefaith in the habitations of upright-ness. They shall see those, whohave been born in darkness untodarkness shall be cast; while therighteous shall be at rest. Sinnersshall cry out, beholding them,while they exist in splendour andproceed forwards to the days andperiods prescribed to them.
