Potentate’s Rambles
At the Business meeting held on April 4th the main topic was updating the membership on the progress of negotiations with the Hamilton Hotel and the possibility of their leasing the Almas Temple lower floors. While this has been a topic of discussion for the last several years, the Hamilton is presently in the process of updating the hotel and are interested in expanding to provide a larger ballroom venue during the renovations. Pre-liminary work on developing this proposal has been carried out by the Almas Finance and Real Estate Committee. Illustrious Sir Michael Gordon, PP, Chairman, has taken the lead on this and developed a listing of points to be covered in a lease agreement with the hotel. Several brainstorming session and discussions with members has resulted in the develop-ment of a preliminary document we have shared with the hotel.
Now, let me stress as I stressed several times during the meeting on the 4th, this is all preliminary work. Nothing is set in stone, no agreements have been signed, and it is still a developing document. Up to this point the Almas side of the document has been from the Finance Committee. The hotel portion has been added by their team of profes-sionals. The Almas team does not feel they have the legal or lease expertise to carry the development farther. As a result I, along with Illustrious Sirs Michael and Don Ferguson, opened preliminary discussions with a professional leasing advisory company. We will meet with them again to go over the preliminary points covered in the working document and in turn they will recommend an attorney with leasing expertise to meet our needs. This then has to be submitted to the Almas attorney for approval, and finally to Imperial legal for final approval. I am sure this will be a major point of discussion at the next several Business Meetings and I strongly urge you to attend so you will be up to date on progress. Beware of listening to scuttlebutt, rumors, and half-truths—you may be listening to the wrong half.
Looking ahead to the next several months Almas has several upcoming events. On May 19th we will hold the Almas Memorial Service to remember Almas members who crossed the sands for the final time. Please attend and help memorialize these Nobles. Light refreshments will be served following the service. June is stacking up to be a busy month with the Crab Feast scheduled for June 15th. The feast will be hosted at the stately manor of Illustrious Sir Michael Gordon, P.P. The highlight of June will be the Past Potentate’s and 50-year Member lunch on June 22nd. Almas membership is invited to attend and help us honor those who have provided leadership in the past. Following the lunch there will be a full regalia Spring Ceremonial in the ballroom. The Ceremonial is open to all Shriners and family members. If you are a new member and have not seen full regalia Ceremonial this is your chance to see the pageantry of Shriners. Light refreshments will follow the Ceremonial. Beat the bushes for prospective members and lets make some new Shriners this Ceremonial. Mark the dates and watch for information posted on the Almas web-site and social media pages.
Our next business meeting is May 2nd. Come early for social hour for a chance to unwind from the day. Dinner service starts at 6:00 and the gavel will sound at 7:30 bringing the Temple to order. Bring your dues card and wear your Fez. Captain of the Guard Chris and the Outer Guard Scott will be checking dues cards for admittance. As mentioned above, the ongoing hotel lease will be a major topic of discussion. Attend the business meetings, join us for good fellowship, fun times, and to keep up on what is going on at Almas.
Yours in the Faith,
Frank Ireton,

Wanted a few young men who love children and love looking weird. We still need your help with parades. Unfortunately, this year we were not invited to participate in the National Cherry Blossom parade but we will be looking to see what local parades we can join.
We need you to show your inner and outer selves and make kids and adults smile at parades. Most kids and adults love Klowns and love to have their pictures taken with klowns and our klown fire engine.
You may not want to become a member of the Klown unit but you can still march with us in the parades, have fun and make people laugh. The funnier you look, the better time you will have with the crowds. If you wish to join the Klowns the next time they hit the streets call the Boss Klown, Walter Simon at 301-318-2485 and let him know that you are available

Assistant Rabban - George StoklasPeggy and I were in Tampa March 11 thru 13 for the Assistant Rabban School held by the Shrine Imperial. Most of the Imperial Officers were in attendance to answer questions that we had. We had excellent guest speakers on membership, finance, fund raising and the running of the Temple as Potentate.
Peggy didn’t spend the day at the pool, as there were important classes for her to attend on what is involved in being a Potentate’s wife and her responsibilities for the year. She said she came away with a lot of new knowledge even after being involved as a Grand Lodge Officers lady for all these years.
Yours in the Faith,George Stoklas
Almas Temple was filled with music Sunday afternoon, April 7th. There were two musicians playing Mozart Sonatas.
Violinist Mairead Hickey was the NCH Irish Young Musician of the Year 2010-12 and won a special prize for the best interpretation of a virtuoso work in 2016 International Louis Spohr Competition and was awarded first place in the 2012 Jeunesses Musicales File and Competition in Romania. She has performed in every concert hall in Ireland as well as the Beethoven-Haus, Bonn and Carnegie Hall, New York. In addition she has also been invited to perform in numerous international chamber music festivals. She began playing the violin in Bermuda when she was three, later studying with Adrian Petcu and now with Mihaela Martin at the Kronberg Academy. She cofounded the annual Ortus Chamber Music Festival in Cork, Ireland. Mairead currently plays a 1702 Tononi violin provided by the Bears International Violin Society.
Pianist Albert Cano Smit was born in Spain and now 22 years old has performed as a soloist and chamber musician across Europe and the United States and has been
praised for playing “with the maturity of someone three times his age” (CBC Music), for his “dazzling technical and emotional dexterity” (DNA) and musicianship “a superb musician has spoken” (Le Devoir). He was the First Place winner in 2017 Walter W. Naumberg Piano Com-petition. Albert won his first international piano competition at age 14 in 2011 at the International Chopin Festival in Mazovia, Poland. Since then he has won first prize in numerous piano competitions in Spain and England. Currently, he studies with Robert McDonald at the Juilliard school of music in New York and is under regular tutelage by Jean-Yves Thibaudet. Albert is an alum of the Verbier Festival Academy.
A very big thank you to the Grand Lodge of the District of Columbia for providing this very enjoyable Sunday afternoon treat.

To all my Sea Dogs,
We had a fantastic April meeting at the Irish Inn at Glen Echo. We had a hardy meal and it wasn’t hardtack or salted meats, but great traditional Irish meals and of course good libations. Unfortunately, it was the Commander who missed the meeting as some foolish man overturned his tractor trailer on the American Legion Bridge and yours truly was stuck there till six bells.
Our next excursion is being handled by a want to be Marine contingent of the ship, Jay Whitcomb. He likes Latin food, so I’m sure it will be Italian. If you would like to join us, contact our secretary, Fred Evans at 301-460-1982 and he will tell you where we will be going. It should be Thursday, April 25th, at 6:30 PM. I’m sure it will be a desirable place where we can lay anchor and enjoy ourselves.
Just a heads up, at our next meeting a quiz will be given on nautical terms. Samples of those terms are in this message other terms are “ahoy there”, Shiver my timbers”, etc. So go study, whoever can answer the most right sails off with a free meal.
Don’t forget your rubber ducky and your song. While I wasn’t there at our last meeting, I will be there in April, no one eats till you sing.

The NW-BCC Shrine Club is open to all. The NW-BCC Shrine Club holds its meetings on the fourth Wednesday of the month at the Knights of Columbus Hall off of Forest Glen Road. The address is 5707 Rosensteel Avenue, Silver Spring, MD 20910. We have a monthly dinner meeting that is $25.00 per person, which include appetizers, beverages, salad, a main course and dessert. What more can one ask. Twice a year we hold our meeting at Old Europe Restaurant in DC. For those who missed our Bull and Oyster Roast in March, you missed a great time and great oysters.
Our next meeting will be May 22, 2019. If you are interested in attending or need additional information, call the Secretary Walter Simon at 301-318-2485. We do not meet in March because our Bull and Oyster Roast is usually held then. In October we meet at the Old Europe Restaurant for lunch and there is no meeting in November because of Thanksgiving. There is a Holiday Party on the first Monday in December. During the summer months there may be a social thrown in just for fun. This year we will meet at the Old Europe on July 21 and October 13 so mark you calendars.
All of our meetings are open so invite your significate other and come join us. We are always welcoming new members.
Yours in the FaithWalter SimonSecretary

Reagan’s StorySix-year-old Reagan and her family are from a suburb of Cincinnati, so it was an adventure for parents Erin and Ryan to pile everyone into the car for an end-of-summer camping trip near Columbus, Ohio.
After a dinner of hot dogs and s’mores cooked over a campfire, the happy crew played nearby before heading to their tents for the night. Twilight made it difficult to see the metal fire ring around the smoldering hot coals and Reagan fell on the embers, receiving second and third-degree burns to the back of both legs.
Shriners Play a Big Role in ReferralsWhen it comes to finding medical help for children, Shriners are now more important than ever. Members of the fraternity have always played a critical role in helping families in their communities get connected with Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati, and now it has become even easier with a website and referral cards.
WebsiteShriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati continues to make referring a patient and obtaining an appointment for care easier than ever through the website: www.shrinershospitalcincinnati.org

Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Cincinnati is one of only four freestanding hospitals in the country dedicated to the treatment of pediatric burns and specializing in plastic and reconstructive surgery. Our physicians’ experience and expertise in pediatric burn treatment, cleft lip and palate, complex wound and skin conditions, and plastic and reconstructive surgery makes Shriners Hospitals for Children – Cincinnati a first choice for care.
If you know a child who could benefit from our services, share our information:

to make an appointment; no referral is needed.
Ryan rushed Reagan to the nearest local hospital. “It all happened in a flash,” he recalled of the event. Once treated, the nurse asked where they would like to take Reagan for continuing care. Erin immediately requested Shriners Hospitals for Children—Cincinnati; she had a friend whose daughter had been treated for a coffee scald and knew it was the best destination for pediatric burns. They had an appointment two days later.
“We had never experienced anything like Reagan’s accident,” Erin said. “I never knew how horrible burns were; how even the simple act of cleaning the wound causes excruciating pain. We are so grateful for what Shriners did for us.”
The kindness and superior care they experienced at Cincinnati Shriners Hospital stayed with them months after Reagan’s wounds had healed, so during the holidays Erin, a middle school teacher, asked her students for hospital donations rather than gifts for her. They did not disappoint. Ryan delivered a large cart filled with games, books and craft items for other patients to enjoy. “It isn’t nearly enough to say thank you for all the wonderful work Shriners Hospitals do,” Erin said, “not only for our daughter Reagan, but for so many families across the country.”
