Potentate’s Message

Greetings Nobles and Ladies,

The activities at Almas continue to happen at a furious pace. Clubs and Units continue to meet each month and hopefully are planning events for the benefit and enjoyment of the membership in the months ahead. At our last business meeting we elected two new Nobles. Were you there to vote? I am becoming a little concerned about the attendance at our business meetings. There were only 25 Nobles in attendance and only eight of our 20 clubs and units were present to tell us what is happening in their organizations. Nobles, business meetings are where deci-sions are being made, whether good or bad, for Almas. We need your participation and input which will decide the future of our Temple. On the other hand, the clowns were joined by several other clowns from other temples and did a great job in the Annual Cherry Blossom Parade. Any of you want to have a good time “clowning around” ? Your help is desperately needed.

Our Hump Day Happy Hours continue to bring in members and friends. The North West-BCC Shrine Club held a very successful Bull and Oyster Roast. The food was great and several individuals were successful at the wheel of fortune. This is one event everyone should plan to attend. Your Potentate’s Ball was a success. Those in attendance received a good meal and enjoyed the music and dancing afterward. Were you there?

Spring MASA met in Lancaster, PA. at the end of April and plans were discussed for Virginia Beach in September. A presentation on Membership was made by representatives from Imperial and information concerning the hospitals was presented. At the end of the meeting a joint Potentate’s Ball was held by Rajah and Zembo Temples. Everyone attend-ing had a great time. I also had the Opportunity to represent Almas at Kena’s Potentate’s Ball.

The month of May has kept me busy as well. I was requested to represent Almas at the Annual Eastern Star Meeting in Virginia. I was also invited to speak about the Shrine at one of our Blue Lodges and attended the DC Grand Lodge Communication.

Upcoming events which I hope many of you will participate in include the Almas Memorial Service, May 15, 2016 at 2:00 pm at the Shrine Center, various Club and Unit meetings, a river cruise sponsored by the Yacht Club and the Memorial Day Parade in Rockville. You can keep up to date on all the happenings at Almas by looking in the alibi calendar. I encourage you to participate as much as you can. By the way, where the &$#* is Al Mas?

Daughters of the Nile

Samla Temple is off to another great year with some new ideas for fundraisers, so keep an eye out for our announcements in the coming months. Plans include our 3rd annual “bowl-ing” tournament.

On March 24th, Samla Temple members Princess Ingrid Cisneros, Debra Ferguson, Past Queen, and I assisted the Almas Shriners in selling CD’s at The WHO concert. Along with approximately 35 volunteers almost 800 CDs were sold which benefited Shriners Hospitals for Children. It’s hard work but exhilarating for the 2-1/2 hrs on your feet at the Verizon Center giving sale pitches to the fans. Afterwards we received tickets to enjoy the show. If you haven’t had an opportunity to participate in this type of event yet, I encourage you to

give it a try, it’s very rewarding.

In June, a few of us will travel to Indianapolis, Indiana to the annual Daughters of the Nile Supreme Session. It’s a great time to meet and share ideas with our counterparts and other members from around the United States and Canada. We look forward to socializing with our friends at the other “Potomac Area” temples which include Alexan-dria-Fairfax, VA, Baltimore and Cumberland, MD.

There are business meetings, temple performances, and educational classes to keep us busy for 5 days and nights. The week concludes with the installation of new Supreme Officers.

Almas Yacht ClubI have heard it said that spring is a battle between winter and summer. The result is a mixed bag of weather to endure until summer can win out. Now that we have slogged through some of the spring weather we can look ahead to summer events. The Almas Yacht Club is busy preparing for several seasonal events this year. The first of which is the Shakedown cruise on May 22nd. Look for the ad in this issue of the alibi. This will be the boat trip for the year and will be chartered out of Annapo-lis. The mid-summer cruise will be a cookout and the frostbite cruise will be a luncheon at Pirate’s Cove in Galesville. Watch for ads in upcoming issues of the alibi and on our Facebook page.

This summer the Yacht Club will be participating in the Mid Atlantic Association of Shrine Yacht Clubs Annual Rendezvous in Chrisfield, Maryland. In the past we have taken an active part in this meeting sharing hospitality duties, participating in the boat parade, and the radio control boat race. This year we will add the boat deco-rating contest to our participation. The MAASYC Bridge has put together a fun program for the meeting this year. In addition to the dinner, there are several social events on the schedule including a Cornhole tournament and a Pizza and Bingo party. And, as always, there will be plenty of opportunity to socialize.

There have been several communications exchanged with the Kena Yacht Club about the possibility of a joint meet-ing. As their members seem to be as busy as ours several May dates proposed have been ruled out. We are now looking at June as a possibility. This meeting, and all Almas Yacht Club events listed above are open to Almas members. We invite you and your lady, friend, or significant other to join us for Shrine fun.

A ship is safe in the harbor but that is not what ships are for.

Almas Shrine is responsible for transporting Shrine Hospital patients, along with their parent or guardian, to the Shriners Hospital in Philadelphia. We need good drivers who are retired or semi retired or still work-ing who can donate some time for periodic trips using Temple Vans. Please call 202-898-1688 and volunteer.

A quality management consultant was hired by a small English manufacturing company to advise them on improving operating efficiency. The company produced a report which dealt with various aspects of productivity. At the top-right corner of one form, there was a small box. The consultant noted that the figure ‘0’ had been written in every such report for the past year. On questioning the members of the staff who completed the report, they told him that they always put a zero in that box, and when he asked them why they told him they were told do so by their supervisor. The supervisor told him he guessed it had to do with ac-cidents but wasn’t sure. It had always been “0” for the twenty-five years he had been there, so he continued the practice. It, too, was something he was told to do by his former supervi-sor.

The consultant could find no one in the company who could tell him what the box represented. Intrigued, he went to the warehouse where the company kept its archives to see what he could discover about the form. The company was founded in 1937 and the records were preserved all the way back to 1940. He found the old reports, he saw that the zero return had continued uninterrupted for as far back as the records extended. Eventually, he found the box that catalogued all the originals of the forms the company had used during its history dating back to 1940. In it, he found the original report which was created in 1941, in pristine condition. In the top right corner was the mysterious box, with the heading clearly shown: ‘Number of Air Raids Today.’ Over time, the heading disappeared but the box remained.

“It’s always been that way” and “That’s the way we do it”. I’ve heard these sentiments a lot throughout my busi-ness career but no where do I hear it more than in the world for Free Masonry and Shriners. There has been a consid-erable amount of wisdom in our Nobility and I’ve learned a great deal from our past Potentates and older nobles. We should listen to them and process their thoughts as we make decisions for the future. That said, the past is the past, it’s there for us to learn from and be inspired by but not to conform to. In the last twenty years our membership has decreased substantially, our activities have dwindled and our investments gotten smaller. Insanity: Doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results. I think in the last year we’ve taken a turn towards the right direction. We have initiated more new local member in Washington DC than we have in many years. The average age of our nobility has started to decrease and we have new clubs and new life forming in the Units. If you have new ideas to take our fraternity into the future show up at business meeting and functions, make your voice heard, resist “the ways it is” and help us take Almas forward.

March and April were really busy for me as your Chief Rabban. Several of us sold over 800 CDs at The Who Concert to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children and then enjoyed a great show. We held two local Poker Tourna-ments and raised several thousand dollars for the Almas Transportation Fund. I also participated, along with several past Potentates in the Daughters of the Nile Installation. Congratulations to Queen Diane Logue and the members of Samla Temple.

It was a beautiful day for a parade and it was a fantastic group of Clowns from Kazim, Kena and folks from Almas, who did a great job making up their costumes.

Special thank you to Eddie Dixon who got the fire truck running, Kenny Collins who kept it going and Rick Hall who recruited some folks from Southern Maryland who fit in just fine. Even Kenny’s daugh-ter and husband with their three children joined us.

We had more Klowns than we have had in years all dressed up and walking along beside the fire truck for the parade. We where a big hit with the crowd.

Thank’s much to Walter Simon for all his hard work getting the clowns together. Feeding them before and after the parade. A big thank you to Past Potentate, John Garrison who helped set up breakfast and lunch and cleaned up afterwards.

Those who did not participate in the parade missed a great time.

A spectacular 6-mile 90 minute narrated cruise on the beautiful scenic Severn River—classified as a U.S. scenic river. View the historic Annapolis Harbor including the
