Literacy and Numeracy – ShapeWe all use shape as a way of identifying and organising visual information. Very early, your child begins to make a connection between familiar objects and their shapes. Changes in these can be surprising. For example, at first he may not want to eat round crumpets or square cookies. But once they experiences this new shape information (and finds out it is still delicious!), they can easily integrate the new shape into their understanding of shape knowledge. When your child explores different shapes, they are using one of the most basic educational processes: the observation of same and different. This concept provides them with a basic process that she will be able to use in observing, comparing and discussing all she sees and encounters. Shapes are also symbols. Not surprisingly, the early recognition of shapes relates to your child's ability to read symbols otherwise known as letters. Capital letters are made mostly of circles (or parts of circles) and lines. The first step in understanding letters is the ability to know the difference between a circle and a square or rectangle. Provide your child with lots of paper and crayons to experiment with drawing lines and shapes. Don't worry if they are not perfect at first. It is most important for him to get the "feel" of the shapes in his hand before it is perfectly represented on paper. This shape drawing will naturally lead to writing letters. Take the letters of their name and help them to see the shapes found in them. Shape Ideas for FamiliesYour kitchen is filled with many wonderful foods and cooking tools in a variety of colors, sizes, and shapes. It is the perfect laboratory for exploring shape, and size. Eat a square meal. We have all heard of the importance of eating a square meal of healthy foods, but why not have a really "square" meal? Serve waffles (big and little squares) for breakfast. Have a snack of square cheese slices on square on a square napkin. As you are preparing and enjoying your meals, ask your child to notice the similarities and differences between the different squares. Help them notice that all the squares have four sides and four corners, but can be various sizes. Use cookie cutters for sandwiches. Celebrate all shapes by using shaped cookie cutters (in a heart, circle, and so on) to make sandwiches for a dainty tea party. Spread bread with cream cheese, and use the cutters to cut the bread into different sandwich shapes. Try mixing shapes by topping the sandwiches with differently shaped toppings, such as a cucumber or tomato slice on square bread, or a triangle of cheese cut from a square on a round sandwich. Talk about the shape names as you prepare the sandwiches. How is a triangle different from a square? How is a circle different from both of them?

Science and Numeracy - Cooking Puff Paint at Bugdlie Preschool

Ingredients for Science Experiment: *1 tbsp of self-rising flour *10 drops of food colouring * water - start with ¼ tsp at time *1tbsp of saltMethod: This fortnight we cooked up our own puff paint as a numeracy activity and science experiment. Firstly, we measured and mixed flour and salt in a small bowl. Secondly, we added ¼ of a cup of water at a time and stirred until we got a smooth, thin paste (about the same consistency of stirred yogurt). Thirdly, we counted 10 drops of food colouring for each container and mixed this in well to make different colours. Our children then painted a picture on a paper plate. Some chose to make flower shapes with circles and others chose butterflies. We then cooked our plates in the microwave for 30 seconds to make our paint puff. The heat caused a reaction that turned our picture from 2D to 3D.
