ALLY LEARNING EXPERIENCE # 4

Objectives

1. To expose participants to the traditional Mental Model (Deficit/Compliance/Control) of the DD profession

2. To expose participants to the “Good Life” Mental Models of support based on compassion, respect, strengths & success.

Page 3: Ally Learning Experience #4:

Traditional service delivery has always been stop, manage and control. This is the mental model that most of us have worked with for many years. Now that we are aware of the basic Good Life principles, we must explore a new mental model to support these principles. Although the model seems simple we have to be willing to put in the work and effort to achieve the Good Life.

The Scene:

You find yourself in a BDLS classroom, there are 10 individuals

Many of whom present with challenging behaviors

As a group chose 2 challenging behaviors you might see

Then go back to some of the aversive techniques that we discussed learning experience 2, which are considered traditional models, decide which you would use to manage those 2 behaviors.

Now that we’ve seen where the traditional models still play a role in our everyday work…

Do these models support the principles of a Good Life including: being respected, valued, included and acknowledged?

NO!

How can we SHIFT our thinking?
