KIRKHAM GrammarSchool Under-14s havebeen crowned Blackpooland Fylde League Netballchampions.

Captain Kate Meah in-spired a side whose hardtraining since Septemberpaid off in style.

It has been an inspira-tion to the girls with herstandard of play and lead-ership in the games.

KGS won all five match-es in the six-team league,defeating Carr Hill 18-6,Arnold 15-8, Lytham 16-15,King Edward & QueenMary School 14-6 and StBede’s 29-2.

EIGHT young sports leaders from BainesHigh helped ensure the smooth running of amulti-skills inclusion event for schools inthe Fylde and Wyre Partnership at ThorntonSports Centr e.

Some 48 children from Breck, CartersCharity, Great Arley, Hambleton, SacredHeart, Singleton and St Wulstan’s and St Ed-mund’s had a great time trying their hand at10 activities.

These included parachute games, skittles,Kurling, Floor Lacrosse, football, multi-skills,seated hockey, target games and cheerlead-ing.

CARR Head Primary ath-letes have made their markon the county circuit.

After an excellent displayin the 12-school local compe-tition organised by the Wyreand Fylde Partnership, thePoulton school qualified –they were the top Wyreschool – to represent theirarea in the county competi-tion in Chorley.

PE co-ordinator ClaudineArmspach said: “Theyshowed excellent team spiritand the attitude was reallypositive.

“It is great to see the chil-dren cheering each other on.It’s the perfect way to intro-duce the children to athleticsand to the importance ofteamwork.”

Football matches againstother schools from the Poul-ton area are under way to pre-pare for a major tournament.

Athletics and football arecoached at two of CarrHead’s many sporting clubs.

Others are devoted to crosscountry, gymnasitics, judo,karate, multi-skills netballand rugby.

MARTIAL arts lovers fromGreat Eccleston got their kicksout of some good old-fashionedjogging ... and did so in a verygood cause.

Young members of the BaekHo Great Eccleston Taekwondoclub raised more than £400 forthe Brian House Children’s Hos-pice in Blackpool by contestingthe Garstang Fun Run.

Several club members haverelatives who benefited from the

work of the hospice and theywere delighted to hand over thecheque.

Second Dan instructor AngieAshcroft said: “It was great tohelp in such a fun way. Thecrowd cheered us all on andthere was a great atmosphere.”

Fleetwood U17 17 Stoke 20FLEETWOOD lost this Colts Cup tie tothe division B leaders despite battlingback from 12-0 down.

They were level by half-time thanks totries by No.8 Adam Dawson and fly-halfJoel Reynolds, with a goal by Tom Evans.

Evans sent flanker Danny Maherthrough from a tap penalty but Stokeclinched victory with a try and a penalty.

The Spanish referee let his cards do thetalking as he showed seven, includingone red.

They didn’t concede a single goalin the tournament in Liverpool,winning nine of their ten matches.

The winning team of Olivia Ander-ton, Millie Foley, Amelia Dalzell, Rebec-ca Chatwin, Sequoia Des-Etags, SelineTurner, Ele Greenhalgh and NicoleThompson will now represent the coun-ty in next month’s North Finals.

Captain Rebecca Aspin and RebeccaPearson both played vital roles.

In the B competition, Arnold beatFleetwood, Kirkham Grammar andKEQMS, with Hannah Armfield, cap-tain Abigail Taylor and Claire Thistleth-waite all in top form.

They then defeated Baines in thesemi-finals 6-2 and Lytham HS 6-1 in thefinal.

Blackpool U14 32 Fleetwood U14 3CENTRE Scott Clark scored three ofBlackpool’s six tries as they bookedtheir place in the Lancashire Vasefinal.

These were man of the match Clark’sfirst tries for the club on his full debut.

His opener was followed by triesfrom skipper Anthony O’Brien andno.8 Crawford Barber to make it 17-3 athalf-time.

Debutant flanker Andrei Rhodesscored the other try, while Chris Davieskicked a goal and there were impres-sive displays by Grzegorz Pawelczaz,Bradley Lynden and Christian Ainsley.The final will be another derby againstFylde.

MONTGOMERY secured a placein the semi-finals of the Lan-cashire Schools Under-12 basket-ball championships with a 26-21win at Park School of Colne.

Jack Fletcher scored allMonty’s 10 points in the firstquarter but Park hit back to make12-12 at half-time.

Fraser Thorpe and Jordie Ash-ton came to the fore with eightpoints each but man of the matchFletcher led the way with 14.

■■ Blackpool Lights won boththeir matches at Sunday’s CentralVenue tournament in Burnley.

They scored 21 points in a su-perb opening quarter againstRossendale which laid the plat-form for a 38-34 win.

Rossendale hit back set up atense final quarter, in which manof the match Lewis Jones scoredsome crucial baskets.

There were nine different scor-ers in the 37-30 win over Shaw asmen of the match Cameron Thor-pe (eight points) and Will Shaw(seven) led the way.

ARNOLD Under-15s won through to thefinal of rugby union’s Lancashire Cupwith a 41-0 win over Cowley HS of St He-lens.

With Sam Crowther in sparkling form,David Mitchell sent James Aird in for theonly try of the first half.

Despite playing against the wind, manof the match Crowther’s penalty gaveArnold a 10-0 half-time lead and JacobReid made a fine last-ditch tackle.

It was one-way traffic after the breakas Alex Casey darted over and outstand-ing captain Jacob Nickson scored twice.

Joe Shaw scored after fine work byTom Jepson and Aird completed the scor-ing with his second.

BLACKPOOL Sixth Form College foot-ballers produced a five-star show to benamed to be crowned regional champs in thelatest of a series of sporting successes forthe college

The team of Matthew Wood, Brent Crosbie,Jordan Douthwaite, Jake Turner, Ant Frostand Liam Smith won the British Colleges Re-gional North West Five-a-side tournament atManchester College.

They went through the tournament un-beaten, defeating Aquinas College from Stock-port in the final on penalties.

They will now go on a represent the North-West in next month’s national finals at Lough-borough.

The home side made the early runningwith the wind and took the lead inside 10 min-utes thanks to Ellis Whorlton-Jones’ finedrive from the edge of the box.

Matty O’Reilly, Andrew Sanderson andJames Fletcher all pressed for a second but itremained 1-0 at half-time.

Kirkham then had most of the play andequalised midway through the second halfthrough Jones.

Frank Sharratt was outstanding at theheart of Rangers’ defence.

Layton 6 BJFF 2LAYTON controlled the first half with thewind as an Alex Smith hat-trick and JamayneRodaway’s goal made it 4-0 at half-time.

BJ pressed in a tighter second half but Lay-ton remained solid as Lewis Borrino andNathan Kirk shared the man of the matchawards.

UNDER-12YMCA 2 Lytham 1LYTHAM took the lead when Harry Green-wood’s blistering shot from the edge of thebox was blocked and Matt Hardman nettedthe rebound.

Lytham man of the match Connor Jordanworked hard up front but was keeper ChesterDuff, who made one outstanding save and itremained 1-0 at half-time.

Jordan Willder was a threat down the leftin the second half for YMCA, who equalisedwhen Conah Bishop pounced on a loose ballin the box.

They took the lead moments later whenBishop got on the end of Willder’s free-kick tothe far post.

Zak Royle went close to an equaliser andJordan’s strike was cleared off the line.

FleetwoodTown 2 St Annes 3BOTH teams battled hard in a ferocious windand Fleetwood took the lead with a long-range strike by Oliver Roe.

St Annes’ efforts were awarded when HariChan headed home a corner.

The visitors pushed on and Reece Duffyscored with a superb diving header beforesetting up the third for Scott Holt.

In the second half, a second Fleetwood goalby Josh Robinson set up an exciting finalebut man of the match Ryan Pearson mar-shalled the St Annes defence.

Foxhall 1 South Shore 9JACK Williams celebrated his 50th goal ofthe season and progressed to 54 with fivegoals for title-chasing Shore.

Foxhall started well and deservedly tookthe lead through Wolfenden.

They almost doubled their lead only for acombination of post and keeper Lee Squiresto keep the ball out.

But once Williams equalised, Shore beganto find their form and the 50-goal man gavethem a half-time lead after fine work by SamAppleton.

Substitute Connor Walsh made it 3-1 with along-range gem before Ryan Darvill scoredtwice, his second a superb strike from out-side the box.

Williams scored three more, his fifth froma fine ball through ball by Josh Kay, who com-pleted the scoring from a tight angle.

Poulton 0 BJFF A 0WITH a pitch more suitable for mud-wrestling and a wind better suited for kite-flying, this was never going to be a classic.

Poulton defended well against the elementsin the first half and then found the BJFFkeeper in top form in the second.

One goalmouth scramble almost produceda winner for the visitors, though man of thematch Reece Crossley was solid for Poulton.

FC Rangers 2 AFC Blackpool 1RANGERS recorded a third successive winbut this was a fine match which could havegone either way.

AFC had the early chances as ThomasYoung, Taylor Clews and Luke Schrieber allwent close, but Rangers took the lead whenDean Kerr was put through by Nathan Reidand fired into the roof of the net.

AFC equalised just before half-time with apenalty by their man of the match Luke Cap-stick.

Both sides had chances to win it in the sec-ond half but it was substitute Eddie Fittonwho did so with a curling shot into the topright corner.

Fleetwood Gym 5 Staining 1BOTH sides battled the biting wind and Gymled 4-0 at half-time.

Staining’s second half improvement wasrewarded with a Francis Dela Cruz goal.

Nuttall and McLardle both scored twice forGym, with Doherty also on target.

SECOND-PLACED St Annes threw the under-10 titlerace wide open by taking all six points off leadersSouth Shore.

Jordan Kilgallon got the only goal of the A gameand St Annes B followed that with a 2-1 win thanks togoals by Lewis Ellison and Max Griffin.

Fleetwood Town and Thornton Cleveleys sharedthe points. Arthur Spencer (2), Matthew Duff andStephen Caldwell gave Thornton A a 4-1 win, withLuke Hind replying. Fleetwood edged an exciting Bgame 3-2 thanks to Jordan Burns (2) and JosephPratt overtaking two goals by Natasha Fenton.

Michael Rose, Matthew Sheridan and AshleyWealthall gave Foxhall A a 3-0 win over BJFF, whoalso lost the B game 2-1 to a double strike by JackLavery. BJ’s reply was an own goal.

Kirkham did well to earn a 1-1 draw in the A gameat home to Clifton Rangers as Thomas Ward an-swered Ryan Walsh’s goal. Rangers won the B game3-0 through Jack Carroll, Oliver Hall and MichaelKeough.

Division B leaders Lytham Junior Maroons se-cured promotion by beating Fleetwood Gym in both

games. Joshua Connolley, Declan Fisher and JoeGregory were the A scorers, and Liam Walsh (2) andMatthew Graffin the B marksmen.

FC Rangers played out a goalless A game with Lay-ton Juniors but won the B game 5-0 as Edward Ayresbagged four goals. Ryan Wallace got the other.

AFC Blackpool beat Warton Typhoons 3-0 and 2-0,with Liam Colmer, Ben Fairclough and Lewis Mid-dleton scoring in the first game and Morgan Shandand Daniel Turner in the second.

Facing the elements in the first half, Wyrekeeper Billy Jenkinson dealt with a couple oflong-range efforts and the deadlock was bro-ken on 17 minutes when Harley Singletonfired across goal and Alex Ward turned theball in.

In the second half, Nathan Haslam pow-ered a header home from a free-kick by SamMorley, whose next one two minutes laterflew straight in.

Skilful lobs by Joseph Fairhurst and Sin-gleton followed in quick succession to makeit five, and Matthew Brooke-Naylor pouncedon a Fairhurst through ball to complete thescoring.

UNDER-13St Annes 3 Poulton 1ST ANNES made the most of the strong windin the first half and Danny Clarkson openedthe scoring after 10 minutes.

Poulton responded well but a thunderousshot by Mitch Bolus gave St Annes a two-goalcushion at the break.

Poulton’s top scorer Adam Stephensonequalised only for Matthew Hartley to re-store the home side’s lead by half-time with a30-yard lob.

St Annes defended heroically after thebreak as Poulton got on top.

Captain Sam Fielding eventually equalisedwith a trademark 25-yard shot.

Lytham had more of the possession in thesecond half only for Derome to score the win-ner 10 minutes from time.

Dan Wilson was the Lytham man of thematch but Poulton defended solidly.

YMCA 0 Spirit ofYouth 5YMCA battled bravely against the leagueleaders, with Sam Slack, Joe Kennedy, EvanTaylor, Adam Levin and Jonathan Houstondefending well.

The pressure eventually told and Spiritwere three up by half-time.

Sevens Rugby

Hurst’s a hero at ArnoldTOM Hurst was named player ofthe tournament as he helpedKirkham Grammar School to tri-umph in Arnold School’s fourthannual Under-15 Sevens.

Kirkham and the hosts both wonthree matches out of four in group Aas ten teams battled it out.

KGS qualified for the semi-finals asrunners-up after beating StonyhurstCollege (48-7), Bury Grammar (31-19)and Arnold (35-5), suffering their onlydefeat against group winners StMary’s, Crosby 12-5.

But Arnold missed out on the mainsemi-finals on points difference de-spite a 48-5 win over Stonyhurst. KingEdward & Queen Mary School quali-fied from the other group.

The semi-final against MerchantTaylors brought a 35-12 win for KGS tosecure a rematch with St Mary’s, whowere too strong for KEQMS in theother semi .

In the final, KGS avenged their ear-lier defeat by beating St Mary’s 15-5with tries by Adam Whalley and SamHall.

Arnold had to settle for the platecompetition, reaching the final with a22-0 win over Bolton School only to seea 21-0 lead slip against Liverpool Col-lege, who won 24-21.■ KIRKHAM won the BirkenheadSchool Sevens, having been beaten fi-nalists last year, while Arnold won theplate competition.

KGS won their group games againstAdams GS (38-5), Merchant Taylors(40-0), Arnold (61-0) and Caldy Grange(40-5).

Captain Jonathan Edwards, KieranBrookes and James Moncrieff wereoutstanding in the 40-5 quarter-finalwin over St Ambrose School.

Tries by Daniel Bibby and KieranMarmion secured a 31-14 win overStonyhurst to set up a repeat of lastyear’s final against Sedbergh School.

Edwards was again in top form, al-though Sedbergh pulled level aftertrailing 17-5 at half-time. A length-of-the field try by Tommy Banks in thelast minute clinched a 22-17 victory forKGS.

Arnold beat Adam’s Grammar (12-7) and Merchant Taylors (20-19) to win

a place in the plate, in which wins overBirkenhead (28-0) and Cheadle Hulme(10-7) earned them a crack at WirralGS in the final, which they won 31-7.■ KGS then retained the Bowring Tro-phy with victory in the North of Eng-land Sevens at Birkenhead Park.

They won their group with winsover Austin Friar’s (22-5), BromsgroveSchool (24-12), Rydal School (35-5) andSt Edward’s, Liverpool (40-5).

Another long-range Banks try se-cured a 28-22 win over Wilmslow HSin the quarter-finals before Lymmwere beaten 33-5 as Marmion andBibby stood out.

Needing victory over ManchesterGS, Arnold raced into a 17-0 half-time

Despite two quick MGS tries,Arnold pulled clear to win 31-12 withtries by the impressive James Walkerand Tom Armfield.

Against favourites BirkenheadSchool, Arnold took the lead throughRobbie Goodier. It was 5-5 by half-timeand some good defence kept it thatway, earning Arnold a semi-finalagainst Kirkham GS.

KGS had enjoyed 24-19 wins overWelsh school Rydal and Wirrall, withBen Jones and Jake Hodgkinsoncatching the eye.

Jones scored against Merchant Tay-lors as a last-minute try secured a 14-12win, then Giggleswick were beaten 17-7 as Ryan Morton scored the crucialtry.

Jonathan Edwards scored the firsttry of the semi for KGS but Arnold hitback to win 26-7, with tries by JamesCave, Harry McNulty, James Walkerand Dewi Morgan.

The rematch against Birkenhead inthe final was a game too far for Arnold,Nathan Bolus scoring the try in the 36-7 defeat.■ KGS Seconds were runners-up in theAustin Friars St Monica’s Sevens inCarlisle.

Despite playing all their matches

against first teams, KGS won theirgroup in the snow and hail by beatingDame Allen’s (12-7), St Bee’s (20-5) andErmystead’s (10-7). They lost to Ull-swater School (17-5).

Hosts Austin Friars were too strongin the final, winning 24-7.Kirkham squad: Sanders, Stover, Luker, Hesketh,Spedding, Morecombe, Roper, Bennett, Hamiltonand Chambers.■ KGS Under-15s reached the semi-fi-nals of the Warwick Sevens, despitelosing their opening match to KingsWorcester 33-7.

They hit back against Old SwinfordHospital 33-14, with Adam Galley andTom Hurst particularly creative.

KGS clinched their spot in the quar-ter-finals with a 21-15 victory overeventual winners St Joseph’s, Ipswich.Tries by Sam Hall and Hurst just be-fore half-time proved crucial.

They next beat King’s Macclesfield21-7 with some fine breaks by NathanWhite and Craig Whalley.

But despite leading 10-7 at half-timein the semi against Barnard Castle,KGS bowed out 38-10.■ KGS Under-13s won the plate com-petition at the Packwood Haugh Sev-ens in Shropshire. Adam Coates andWill Lockhart were their leading scor-ers with seven and six respectively.

Despite defeats by St Olaves and

Ellesmere, they beat Packwood Bar-barians 34-0 to earn a plate quarter-final against Bromsgrove B, whichthey won 31-12.

After beating Moor Park 38-7 in thesemis, they came from behind to de-feat Abberley School with tries by SamNorris (2), Lockhart (2) and Coates.■ BEN Rhodes-Powers and Ben Swiftexcelled for KGS Under-14s as theybeat Bishop Vessey 25-10 in the War-wick Schools Invitational Sevens.However, they bowed out after defeatsby Oundle School and Warwick.■ OTHER Arnold teams took onQueen Elizabeth GS of Blackburn.

The Second XV defeated the QEGSsenior side 20-12, with Oliver Bentley,George Worthington, Henry Turner,Ben Nowell, Freddie Priestley andAshley Harrison all outstanding.

James Kidner’s late penalty sealed a15-14 win for the Under-15B side overQEGS A as Tom Rutherford scoredtwice.

The Under-14s were comprehensive48-12 away winners as Oliver Hopkinsscored a hat-trick, Harrison Kenwor-thy bagged two and Oliver Mills, TomHammond and Shan Patel also scored.
