SPORTING pupils at Highfield HumanitiesCollege are getting their breath back aftertheir outstanding efforts in last week’s Black-pool Schools cross-country.

In the event staged at Collegiate, Highfield domi-nated the Year 8/9 categories, winning both the boys’and girls’ events.

In the other boys’ categories, Highfield finished first atYear 7 and second at Year 10/11. The girls were second inboth these age groups.

Highfield’s outstanding individuals were Alisha Roy-lance, who finished second at Year 8/9, and third-placedfinishers Adam Curwen (Year 7) Sam Pickering (Yr 10-11).

AllStars photographers were along invited along to aYear 7 and 8 netball practice session. The Year 7 team arepreparing for a schools’ tournament at Palatine next week.

ActivityThe Year 8 football team are

looking forward to the Black-pool Cup after a strong leaguecampaign, which saw them losethbe final to Montgomery.

Highfield offers a wide-rangeof after-school sports clubs,while Year 10 girls CaitlinMackridge and Claire Elder-shaw lead a lunchtime activityclub for special needs children.

PE also plays a prominentpart in the Duke of EdinburghAward Scheme, in which manypupils are involved in schooland in the community.

More than 50 pupils attendedthe Blackpool Festival ofDance. Year 11 girls MollyClough and Chloe Demetriouhave been doing a fine job lead-ing the Year 7 dance club.

THE curtain came downon the rugby season forKing Edward and QueenMary School’s first XVwith a thrilling 24-17win over Bolton.

With 10 players mak-ing their senior debut,the result was in doubtuntil the dying mo-ments.

Flanker Luke Skyrmecharged down a clear-ance kick for the open-ing try and Grant Black-shaw converted superblyfrom wide out.

Bolton’s pressure re-sulted in two tries and a12-7 half-time lead, de-spite strong defence byskipper Harry Ormsbyand Kelham O’Hanlon.

Ormsby sent wingerKenji King diving in foran equalising try after astrong burst by full-backBlackshaw.

Again Bolton raisedtheir game and regainedthe lead going into thefinal quarter.

The former world juniorchampion from Liverpoolwas the keynote speaker atthe launch of the Leader-ship Academy at FleetwoodHigh School.

The first 36 students haveregistered with the Acade-my, created by the Wyre andFylde Sports Partnership,with a view to furthering

their skills in sports coach-ing and volunteering.

The students will meetregularly as they work to-wards Sports Coach UKqualifications in varioussports. The final sessiontake place in Windermere.

Smith told the studentshow their efforts can helpthe young athletes of the fu-ture.

LeylandWarriors 28Blackpool Scorpions RL U16 14SCORPIONS defied injuries toput in agallant performance.

Playing downhill in the firsthalf, they applied plenty of pres-sure but had only a penalty byscrum-half Anthony Livingstoneto show for their efforts.

The Blackpool side’s defencewas stretched as Leyland scoredtwice in quick succession,adding a third try before half-time to lead 14-2.

Hard-driving centre ZachWard led the way as Scorpionstook the game to their hosts play-ing uphill, and they were re-warded with a Liam Wilkinsontry.

However, two more tries sawthe Warriors stretch their lead to24-8, but Scorpions did not liedown as Josh Shearman, OmarFrederick, John Beattie, Joe Bul-lock and Ward continued toshow tremendous determina-tion.

HONOURS finished even afterfour Year 7 netball games be-tween Arnold and King Ed-ward and Queen Mary School.

The sharp-shooting ofArnold’s Josephine Box gavethem the edge in the A game,which they won 11-3.

Molly Betmead and HannahDennison attacked stronglyfor Arnold, while LauraStokes stood out for KEQMS.

In a much closer B match,Arnold recovered from 2-0down to win 11-8. Emily Brookwas outstanding in defencefor Arnold, while Eloise

Evans was the KEQMS starplayer.

KEQMS turned the tables inthe C games, winning 5-1thanks to excellent work inthe circle by Christy O’Neilland Bryonny Whittaker.

Becky Leversidge was alsoin fine form in defence, whileKatie Lawson and FrancescaClarke caught the eye forArnold.

Shannon Clare was excel-lent as KEQMS defied anArnold fightback to win the Dgame 5-3. Hannah Nutter andAnna Hood were Arnold’sbest.

Blackpool StanleyU14 0 Haydock 62STANLEY couldonly muster 12players against theoutstanding pro-motion-chastersand were gallant indefeat.

The home sidedid get into theirstride towards theend of the first halfand were far morecompetitive in thesecond.

MONTGOMERY made the most of home advantage to win aYear 8 basketball tournament for Blackpool schools, beatingBeacon Hill in the final.

Although their team consisted mainly of Year 7 players, Mont-gomery continued the success which saw them win through tothe Lancashire schools quarter-finals.

The points were shared throughout the team, though the fin-ishing of Jack Fletcher and Fraser Thorpe was first-class, whileWill Shaw and Liam Rigby were also outstanding.

KIRKHAM Grammar SchoolU15s have won through to thequarter-finals of the nationalDaily Mail Vase.

They defeated Ermysteds GS fromSkipton 15-0 in round seven, withback rowers Adam Galley, Jack Ing-ham and Craig Whalley-Hunter out-standing.

Fly-half Will Roper’s kicking gradual-

ly got KGS on top and Jack Ingham scoredthe opening try from a lineout.

Roper’s conversion and a penaltystretched the lead to 10-0 and full-back SamHall added the match-sealing try aftergood work by prop Micky Papangelis.

KGS travel to face the Leys School inCambridge in the last eight.

Two more Hall tries, the second from aclever kick by winger Josh Rowlands,were not enough to save KGS from a 26-

17 defeat by St Anselm’s College fromWirral.

Will Fleuriot added a late consolationtry, with Roper landing a conversion.

KGS won all the other matches againstAnselm’s, the U17s returning from Birken-head with an excellent 40-0 win.

Skipper Chris Travis led by example,while flankers Matthew Edgar and BobbyGarlington were in fine form, andMatthew Ellis, Josh Woods and OliverChambers also impressed.

The U14s were too strong and fast, win-ning 45-0 as Ben Swift, Scott Rudd and BenRhodes-Powers scored two tries each.Mathew Beaty added the other 15 pointswith a try and five goals.

Luke Woodward, Charlie Redshaw, An-drew Collins and Jack Smith were alsomost impressive.

The U13s were always in control aftertwo early Adam Coates tries and won 50-21.

Thomas Hunter ran in a hat-trick, whileWill Lockhart and Lewis Leach were alsooutstanding. Leach, Jonathan Chan andJames Penrose also scored for KGS, whotook their foot off the pedal late on.

KGS U12s recovered from a disappoint-ing first half to win 14-5 with late tries bythe excellent Connor Wilkinson and ScottCollins.

Josh Powell converted both and DavidKing also stood out.

Fleetwood pressure then saw Johnson cutinside to score her second from a tight angle,and Reynolds also doubled her tally after asurge down the left.

at times in the first half but YMCA still led 4-0 at the break,through Olivia Hooper, two from Ellie Miller and Alex Stephens’excellent chip.

Myerscough scored soon after the break but their celebrationswere shortlived. Laurel North was the other scorer.

Thingwall 3 Blackpool Under-13 1AFTER a highly competitive but goalless first half, the leagueleaders took charge with two quick goals.

Lauren Oatley scored a hat-trick, with Sian Dillon and Rhi-annon Davies also on target. Tireless striker Nicole Petch was theplayer of the match.

They had more chances but it remained 1-0at the break and Warton took control in thesecond half.

Smith’s second, after fine work by the de-termined Andrew Kinsella, brought Laytonback into the match at 2-2 but Warton wenton to complete their victory despite fine dis-plays by Nathan Laird and Layton man of thematch Zak Gayton.

CUP rivals Poulton Youth and StAnnes will try for the fourth timeto resolve their under-10 Poultonand District Primary LeagueCoulton Cup first-round tie onSaturday.

The aggregate finished 2-2 lastweekend as St Annes won the Agame 1-0 through Jordan Kilgal-lon and Poulton the B gamethrough Cameron Peters and Tay-lor Cornall. Christian Kirkhamgot St Annes’ goal.

Poulton Youth’s cup involve-ment meant they were replacedat the top of the league by SouthShore, who won at CliftonRangers 3-0 and 3-1.

Their A scorers were QuaidHenderson, Connor Slater andLuke Williams, and the B marks-men were Owen Hargreaves,Luke Harris and Ben Smith, withJack Carroll replying.

Lytham Junior Blues andFleetwood Town had a win

apiece. Two goals by JordanBurns gave Fleetwood a 2-0 Awin, which was matched byBlues’ B team thanks to MatthewRhodes and Josh Radley.

Only one game was played indivision B as YMCA cementedsecond place by beating Spirit ofYouth 4-0 and 2-1. Laurence Joyn-er (2), Dan Hood and Joel Raineswere the A scorers.

Spirit B gamely led 1-0 at half-time through Liam Rutter, whosegoal was overturned by Joe Seearand Kyle Macauley.

In the Plate Competition,Fleetwood Gym progressed to thequarter-final with a 3-1 aggregatewin at Warton Typhoons aftertwo hard- fought tussles.

Town went in front within a minute ofthe restart through Callum Ellis anddebutant Josh Robinson lobbed the sec-ond three minutes later.

Foxhall came back strongly with twogoals in two minutes from Garner andRobinson but Jordan Anderton, MatthewChadwick and Ben Reader all went closeto a winner for Fleetwood before Ellisscored his second from a last-minute cor-ner.

St Annes 3 Lytham 1ST ANNES started brightly and createdchances but it was Lytham who led athalf-time through an excellent HarryGreenwood goal.

The home side came out with all gunsblazing for the second half and were re-warded with a fine finish by Tom Bradley.

St Annes took the lead with a CurtisWillder penalty but Bradley Jonesequalised.

Willder bagged a second but the homeside led 3-2 at half-time thanks to goalsfrom Oliver Alston and Josh Cooper.

Cooper completed his hat-trick as StPoulton pulled clear, with Jones nettinghis second and Tom Marsden also on tar-get. Midfield dynamos Bradley Birch andAlistair Haines were outstanding.

UNDER-16YMCA 2Wyre Juniors (Thornton) 2YMCA came back from two goals downto take a point in a fiercely-contestedmatch.

Sam Slack went close before Wyrescored twice in rapid succession throughTaylor and Barnett to lead 2-0 at half-time.

Oscar Rowley pulled one back but itstill looked like Wyre’s day as a YM penal-ty drifted wide.

But with 10 minutes left Josh Vere-nakis turned in the box to fire home. AlexGrindrod and Dan Jones impressed forYMCA .

Lytham 11 Warton 0NAT Houghton’s first-minute goal wasfollowed two minutes later by a JoshMiller strike and the writing was on thewall for Warton.

It was 8-0 at half-time as man of thematch Miller completed his hat-trick,with Ben Cudworth, Tommy Smith andJoel Cummings all chipping in with goals.

THE senior hockey sides ofArnold School and King Edward& Queen Mary School both gaveoutstanding displays to beat Al-trincham.

Arnold overwhelmed Altrin-cham 10-1. Harley Greene’s skilland speed on the right torment-ed the opposition as she crossedfor Georgia Perkins to score thefirst two goals.

Sophie Oliver added the thirdbefore Greene’s double strike tomake it 5-0 at half-time.

Greene netted twice more,Perkins completed a hat-trick,Oliver added her second andCara Smith also scored.

In other matches against Al-trincham, the Second XI wereoutpaced and lost 4-0 despiteAmy Bradley’s outstandingsaves.

The Under-15s gave their bestdisplay of the season to hit backfrom a 2-0 half-time deficit andearn a draw with two goals fromstar player Rachel Fackey.Sweeper Jenny Carpenter de-fended well and Lara Cherrywas always dangerous.

The Under-14s also trailed 2-0at half-time but could not breakthrough and conceded a third.

Emily Adams scored five inthe Under-13A’s 12-0 win,Francesca Beeby adding threeon her debut at this level. Alsoon target were Emily Owen (2),Courtney Spector and the out-standing Jessica Omassoli. Lau-ren Simpkin scored both in the Bteam’s 5-2 defeat.

beating Altrincham 3-1. Theystarted slowly in their firstmatch since November and fellbehind before Melissa Bentleyfollowed up a shot by star playerMegan Foy to equalise.

It remained 1-1 at half-time,after Jordana Singleton shot justwide, but the Lytham sidestepped up the pace and JessicaLambert converted a corner.

Hannah Shaw crowned an out-standing team performance witha penalty goal.

Full-backs Katie Warren andLaura Wimperis excelled for theUnder-15s, who won 4-0 withgoals from Lottie Owen (2),Olivia Shaw and Joanne Ker.

Alex Livesey’s fine displaycould not spare the Under-14s a 5-0 defeat, though the Under-12sproduced two fine contests. Su-perb goalkeeping by Alice Smithensured the A game ended goal-less, while the B team were goodvalue for a 2-0 win, in which cap-tain Jasmine Brogden defendedsuperbly.■ KEQMS also recorded a cleansweep of wins over Rivingtonand Blackrod. KEQMS controlled the secondhalf and Bentley’s second sealedvictory after player of the matchSophie Owen and Megan Foylinked up well.

The Under-15s dominated towin 5-0, with Natasha Singletonand Lottie Owen dangerousthroughout. They scored twoapiece, while Olivia Shaw addedthe other and Jennie Lee wasoutstanding on the left wing.

Player of the match SophiaCrawshaw scored both goals asthe Under-14s got back to win-ning ways, while the RachelHirst netted four in the Under-13s’ 6-0 win. Laura Stokesstarred for the Under-12s with ahat-trick in their 6-1 success.

ANCHORSHOLME and Beacon Hillschools will represent Blackpool atthe Lancashire Indoor Athletics fi-nals in Chorley next week.

These schools emerged victoriousfrom a series of competitions in which650 children took part.

Some 240 contested finals at BlackpoolSports Centre.

The Primary Events involving theeight families of Blackpool primaryschools began before Christmas and re-sulted in overall success for Anchor-sholme from Thornton Cleveleys.

The secondary schools were all repre-sented in the final at the Sports Centrelast week, when Beacon Hill came out ontop.

The programme is ran by BlackpoolSchool Sport Partnership but is heavilydependent on the volunteers from localsecondary schools and Blackpool, Wyreand Fylde Athletic Club.

Blackpool senior sports coach MattCraddock said: “Athletics is fantastic fordeveloping children in the fundamentalsof sport.”
