COMING SOON… PLANT 9

Construction on Plant 9 will begin in the upcoming months and will be an

exciting addition to our Ready Mix operations. Plant 9 will be located just

outside of Angleton. As the Grand Parkway continues to loop around Hou-

ston, it will pass just north of this location bringing with it residential and

commercial growth.

This area is the last undeveloped land that is still relatively close to down-

town Houston and the Medical Center. The addition of this plant will in-

crease our reach in the Houston market and will be built as a new stand-

ard for future greenfield operations.

We are aiming to increase plant efficiency by using a more effective mate-

rial handling system and faster loading point. A more capable plant design

and improved traffic flow design will handle all of the equipment that

moves around the facility on a daily basis to reduce congestion.

In order to reduce environmental impact, a more efficient dust collection

system will be utilized to collect emissions at the loading point and silos

will be vented into the dust collection system. Silos will also be equipped

with radar technology to obtain accurate inventories, prevent overfilling,

and control visible dust emissions. All water used at the plant will be recy-

cled into the concrete production and preservation of as many trees as

possible in the construction process will be a priority.

Plant 9 is scheduled to be operational by the first quarter of 2017. We look

forward to this expansion and the opportunities it will bring.

Relentless Flooding at Aggregate Sites

Those who are in the Aggregates business surely have seen the effects of flooding.

This is simply due to the fact that most of the sand and gravel deposits are adjacent to

major river beds.

Unfortunately, this piece had to be rewritten due to the fact it originally covered only

the April flooding…and then just recently the Houston area and far surrounding areas

were again greatly impacted by vast flooding. Both of these events were of historical

proportion. The Colorado River, where Alleyton’s aggregate operations lie, reached a

height of over 46’ in Columbus in April, then pushed 44’ in an already saturated May

creating even more devastation in Houston and far into the rural communities. Three

of our six aggregate sites remain idle as we continue to take inventory of the damages

and attempt to dewater operations. It will take time to recover from Mother Nature’s

actions, but we hope to be back on track soon.

Although these events impacts a company’s bottom line, we must keep in our

thoughts and prayers the family’s that have lost not only personal items, cars and

homes …but also lives.

WE ...

And the Award goes to...

TACA High Strength

Concrete Competition

Eric Holeman, our Quality Control Manager, won the Texas Aggregates and Concrete Association’s High Strength Concrete Com-petition!

His plant mix resulted in a compressive strength average of 14,610 psi, winning 1st place. An impressive award for Eric and for our team.

Aggregate Safety Awards

At the South Central Joint Mine Safety and Health Conference our Aggregate sites won some impressive awards. 4L Ranch and Al-tair received the highest honors, the Senti-nels of Safety Award.

Sentinels of Safety are awarded annually to the nation's safest mines with a minimum of 4,000 injury-free hours. The awards were initiated in 1925 by then-Commerce Secre-tary Herbert Hoover and remain the nation's most prestigious awards recognizing mining safety.

Vox, Potter, Altair and 4L also received “Certificate for Achievement in Safety” awards. These are mine operators through-out the US who have a proven reportable accident-free record.

Your Opportunity to Help

With all of the recent rain and flooding, we’ve had a few of our employees suffer seri-ous damage, or displacement from their homes. While everyone is safe, these folks will need to do some rebuilding.

We have created a GoFundMe account for anyone who might wish to donate some money to help these employees get back on their feet.

Please visit https://www.gofundme.com/284wd2fw to donate!

James Brady Jr, Ready Mix Driver, Plant 5

How long have you worked for Allied? Almost 11 years What do you like about working for Allied? I like just coming to work and doing what needs to be done in order to get the mud on the ground. I like making progress, never giving up and succeeding. What is your biggest challenge driving a mixer? We always have the opportunity to improve communication across the organization. What is your life motto and why? Put me in the game. I started watching the Texans and one Sunday afternoon I heard a player say “Hey, put me in the game.” and ever since I have been saying that. Actually it was Brian Cushing who said it, I remember he had blood all over his nose and he still wanted to go back in the game. It reminded me of back in high school playing football. Now everyone over at Plant 5 says it. What are your hobbies outside of work? I like to paint, and I have my own line of shirts called Turff Aquatics, by J Brady Arts. I would like to have my own business one day based on my art. If you were a superhero, what would your superpowers be? Strength, like Thor or Captain America, mentally and physically strong.

Allied Concrete was contacted about an 80 year old woman nearby in Missouri City, TX who was unable to leave her home. Mrs. Epple’s husband had passed a few years ago and she needed a wheelchair to be mobile due to some medical issues. Unfortunately her home was not wheelchair accessible due to the stairs leading up to the front door and a cracked, uneven sidewalk.

A group of volunteers from her neighborhood and church came together to help Mrs. Epple. Allied Concrete donated 3 yards of concrete to the project. The rest was completed by the volun-teers who busted up the old concrete, cleared the area, poured the new sidewalk and built the ramp to her front door.

Mrs. Epple’s family sends their gratitude to all involved, this side walk and ramp made a huge impact on her and her family’s life.

AND WE ROLL!

It’s hard to believe we have approached the half way point of 2016.

After a disappointing Safety record in 2015, we started 2016 looking to improve. We

have implemented additional training for new and existing employees, and focused on

areas where we are exposed to the most risk. Compared to last year at this time, we

are even on recordable injuries (4 injuries) but preventable fleet incidents have risen by

3 (4 in 2015 and 7 so far this year). All of these injuries and accidents were 100%

preventable. The costs to employees and the company add up. Injury and

accident expenses come right off the bottom line; money that could be put to wages,

training, and equipment/plant improvements. Safety is everyone’s responsibility; if we

have employees who don’t take Safety seriously, there will not be a spot on the team

for them moving forward. Safety is that important.

From an overall business perspective, a strong first quarter has been followed with

historic rain and flooding events in April and May that caused significant business

interruptions. We experienced significant flooding at several aggregate sites as well as

minor flooding at a few concrete plants. We dodged most of the flooding due to the

quick action of employees who were able to move equipment to higher ground and

prepare for the rising waters. Thank you to everyone who put in the long days and

weekends to minimize the impact to our operations!

From a market standpoint, experts and economists are still skeptical on what will

transpire the remainder of the year. Most feel that residential housing will continue to

decline, and our sales departments have been actively seeking new customers and

different segments of the business to help offset any decline. The strong reputation of

Alleyton and Allied Concrete goes a long way in retaining our customers. We never

want to be a company that competes on price; we want our customers to recognize that

we are the safest, most productive company they can choose. A company that

provides the best customer service and highest quality construction materials in the

market will win the day. That is what we are working towards every day.

Thanks for all of your hard work, and please remember to work safe.

On May 2nd, 2016 we held our first blood drive at our main office in Richmond. We had 18 partici-pants give blood. It is important that we support our community and help the health of those around us. Gulf Coast Regional Blood Center sent a fully equipped bus to our location so we could easily walk out and donate. Gulf Coast Regional serves more than 170 hospitals and health care institutions in the 26-county Texas Gulf Coast, Brazos Valley and East Texas regions.

Why donate? 1 out of 3 people will need blood in their lifetime. From natural disasters to unfore-seen catastrophes, emergency hospital procedures to life-long battles with chronic diseases such as sickle cell, you or someone you know will need blood. That is why it is important to donate whenev-er you can. One donation can save up to three lives.

We hope to make this an annual event and open up the opportunity to the rest of our locations. If you are interested in donating on your own there are several organizations in our operational areas that would greatly appreciate your donation.

HARD HAT ZONE

Meet Our New Safety and

Claims Coordinator, Lisa

Thomas!

I was born and raised in Houston, TX. I

graduated from the University of Hou-

ston-Downtown in 2013 with a Bache-

lor’s in Safety Management. I have pre-

vious work experience in the Oil & Gas

and Construction industries.

I enjoy traveling, listening to music and

fishing. I grew up playing basketball

first half of the year is the best because you have the NFL Playoffs / Su-

per Bowl, March Madness and NBA Playoffs / Finals. What more could

one seriously ask for in life?

I am enthused to see the effort that is put into safety here at Alleyton not

only from senior management, but from our field employees as well. I am

eager to bring my knowledge, skills and expertise to Alleyton to help build

on our ever improving safety culture. I’m thrilled to be here and look for-

ward to what the future holds.
