BLAKE MOURER OPEN STUDIO

Blake Mourer began his career walking jobsites in Arkansas at 5 years old, as the youngest son of a 5th generation brick mason. He attended his state school, the University of Arkansas - Fay Jones School of Architecture, overlapping with a young professor, Marlon Blackwell. His lifetime in-terest in design kicked off a professional ca-reer with an internship at Morphosis in Santa Monica in the early 1990’s and eventually landed at Gensler for a nearly 14 year stay. He left with a desire to combine the diverse experiences into a firm that would capital-ize on the multiple perspectives—cultivat-ing a culture of design while minding the business with an entrepreneurial perspec-tive. Open studio | architecture began in September 2011.

The AIA Northwest and Pacific Region (NW+PR) Architecture Firm Award is intend-ed to recognize outstanding contributions to the profession of architecture through excellence in design and through elevating the quality of the built environment. Mah-lum was fortunate to receive this honor in 2014. Mahlum Architects has offices in Se-attle and Portland and its history spans four generations of leadership. The firm is fueled by the belief that architecture serves com-munities and fosters connections, whether in education facilities, healthcare buildings or student housing. We stand committed to positively impacting lives – both on an indi-vidual and universal scale. DEANNA WLAD

SPARK DESIGN

Living and working as an architect in the largest state has advantages, as well as, challenges. Being a woman who owns and runs an architecture firm in a place known for rugged geographical terrain and a male dominated culture, can be even more challenging. Join Deanna Wlad as she discusses how she has transformed the challenges she found in Alaska into strengths and opportunities in her archi-tecture career, and how the remote geo-graphical location shapes the creative vi-sion and work of Spark Design.

Since the 1950s, support for design-build delivery has grown significantly within the design and con-struction community. In fact, the AIA, whose code of ethics once discouraged members from the practice, has now deemed the architect as the most qualified to lead design-build. In 1989, Leo Marmol and Ron Radziner formed Marmol Radzin-er for the purpose of creating exceptional design. Recognizing the inextricable tie between design and construction, the firm began building its own designs to achieve the highest level of quality. To-day, Marmol Radziner offers architectural, interior, and landscape design; construction services; and cabinet and metal fabrication services. Managing Principal Leo Marmol, FAIA, offers an insider’s per-spective on how design-build, and the growing acceptance of this practice, has both shaped the firm and contributed to its success.

MICHELLE ALLEN JLG ARCHITECTS

In 1989 JLG Architects started the way many architecture firms do – with two founding partners that simply wanted to elevate the bar for design in the community they served. Fast forward 25 years and you’ll find an orga-nization that’s done just that and more. With over 100 people in nine regional offices, JLG has well over one hundred design awards in their portfolio – but the firm’s most celebrat-ed accomplishments are those awards that have recognized JLG’s successful growth and status as a local, regional and national Best Firm to Work For. Using the JLG story to illustrate the stages of firm evolution, join us as we discuss best practices for navigating change in a growing company.

Design firms have a kind of “DNA” that drives and defines the work produced. In this session Stephen Dynia will describe the culture of Dynia Architects: how the firm started, its mission through the years and the inspirations, influences and methods that continue to motivate the work – illus-trated through a presentation of current projects and highlights of the past 20+ years of practice.
