Twelve years ago, I had the pleasure of meeting the author and national speaker, Bill Huebsch. He was speaking at a Diocesan event in Green Bay and promoting his book, Dreams and Visions.
I was drawn into his presentation because he spoke in a new way about conversion, discipleship and of lifelong faith formation. In many ways he was a precursor to many of our current writers on discipleship and evangelization.
One of his most remarkable components of his presentation and writings for me was his reflection, Signs of Conversion. He addressed the issue of how we might know if the Spirit is moving and shaping us and those around us. It provides and interesting roadmap for each of us. Consider this. We know that we are experiencing conversion to a life in Christ when:
• We are adapting to the ebb and flow of life more easily. We do not hold on to the dock too rigidly. We can swim out into daily life with confidence and without fear.• We have a growing flexibility with others. Just as we can experience ourselves bending with the Spirit, we are less judgmental and allow others to have their own experiences.• We have a growing sense of generosity with money, time, material things and even our own inner lives.• We find ourselves forgiving freely when someone wrongs us. A certain grace of forgiveness sweeps in and being in Christ, the positive energy of love overcomes dislike, indifference and hate.
• We find that we have a stronger sense of hospitality toward strangers and friends. It is genuine. It is a spontaneous expression of love prompted by the Holy Spirit.• We develop a heart for the materially poor. We become keenly aware of the Gospels.• We become aware of our own failures and sin. We see our daily lives through the lens of the Gospel and have a strong sense of the presence of God. We are Christ in others.• We have a deep love for the Eucharist, not as a private devotion but as a big, messy, shared event that we hold on Sunday together. The community feels united and purposeful.• The Spirit within urges us to share our time and unique gifts in our parish community with excitement instead of reluctance.• We want to grow in our faith, knowledge and experience of Jesus.
This list was a great reminder that when we encounter Jesus, we are invited to be on an intentional pathway of Becoming. Becoming like him! If you would like to have a conversation about these points, I will be holding Zoom Conversations on Wednesday evening, August 5th at 6:00pm and Thursday morning, August 6th at 9:00am.
