A MESSAGE FROM Our Pastor

My Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

In this week’s Gospel, Jesus visits his hometown of

Nazareth to teach in the synagogue and minister to

the sick, some of whom may have been relatives,

friends, or neighbors. Those who heard and wit-

nessed him were astonished at his wisdom and

power, yet “they took offense at him”.We see that

even our Lord did not always “succeed” in present-

ing the word of God to the people. Instead, many

times he faced ridicule, resistance and rejection.

Why would people reject the word of God?

God’s Word can be challenging to receive because at times it is

an invitation to change, a call to repentance and conversion of

heart. It is even more difficult to accept when the call is pro-

claimed by those nearest to us. To avoid God’s message, we

question the messenger and allow our prejudices to become an

obstacle to faith. We reject the truth in order to avoid the pains

of change and growth. Indeed, we are often rebellious and obsti-

nate of heart! Yet, the “Good News” is that God is merci-

ful! Our Lord desires to forgive, heal, and save us through faith

in him. In contrast, lack of faith hinders the work of God in our

lives!

Recall that at our Baptism, we have been anointed and united to

the prophetic mission of Christ. When we begin sharing the

Good News of Christ to others, one challenge is that we will

have to face our weaknesses and limitations. When Paul begged

Jesus to take away his “thorn in the flesh”, Jesus’ response is one

we can heed: “My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made

perfect in weakness.” We can be assured of God’s grace in ful-

filling the mission that he calls us to, enabling us toovercome

insults, hardships, persecutions, and constraints along the way –

“for the sake of Christ”. We need not be worried about ou-

rinsufficiencies, for when we are weak, we are strong in Christ!

Let us ask for God’s grace to strengthen and encourage us in our

journey of missionary discipleship, in spreading the word of

God to the world, starting with our community.

In proclaiming the word of God, how can we deal with rejection and

indifference from others? What can we do to make those we encounter

feel loved and listened to?

Fr. David Vivero

For Your Day

t’s all so ordinary that we can easily miss it. The seagulls hunting and diving for mollusks at the beach offer a display of determination and precision as they gather their food for the day. It’s simply what these creatures do. Yet, there’s a magical artfulness and skill to their work that speaks volumes about the One who breathed life into their being. This is pretty much the way it is with God’s presence. God comes in common ways through common things and ordinary people. Sadly, we are so engulfed in our little worlds of order and ideas to notice the beauty and wonder of it all. Many have numbed themselves to the Divine spark at the essence of all life because that’s just the way it is. What’s so special about it? A sunset is a sunset and a seagull is a seagull. That’s precisely what they thought about Jesus too. After all, isn’t he just the carpenter’s son? What merit can his words possibly have? If we’re looking for God to come in an event that is so dramatic and intense that it knocks our socks off, then think again. When pondering God’s relationship with His people and God’s action in our lives, we have to go back to the stable and the recurring, creative, unending power of God’s presence. It was a quiet, run of the mill kind of night. There was nothing spectacular or extraordinary. To the naked eye, a woman gave birth to a child and there wasn’t anything extraordinary to see. We have a hard time understanding God’s ordinary-ness. Jesus grew up in an ordinary town, had neighbors and did normal human things. Perhaps that’s why we don’t always like the Gospel. It doesn’t dazzle us with extraordinary things but simply challenges us to take a different look at our ordinary stuff. That makes us uncomfortable. We prefer things as they are. Our lack of faith can even cause us to take offense at what Jesus says and does, dismissing it as folly. God’s life-giving presence continues to sustain that seagull in flight and keep all things in being regardless of whether we have the faith to see and understand this. Our personal agendas, preconceived ideas,

misconceptions, and expectations can often cause us to be hardened and blinded to what God is doing or desiring to do. While God continues to do what he has done for all eternity, faith is needed for God’s presence to bear fruit. The blinders we wear and the expectations we bring to life can often prevent us from seeing graced moments that radiate with God’s graceful presence. They also prevent God’s transforming, healing, and hope filled vision for our world from being realized. Without faith, God won’t be able to do much for us either. ©LPi

We Serve...

While everyone is having a good time at All Souls Community Family Fest, behind the scenes a brigade of volunteers is working tirelessly to ensure that all guests enjoy their experience. Every year, those volunteers take out mountains of trash, drive the infirm from their cars to the fun, cook endless meals, string up lights and electrical cables, set up tents and stages... the list goes on. Who are these volunteers? They're a core group of All Souls festival die-hards known as the "green shirts", surrounded by dozens of people like you, who make it all possible. It's you who is the beating heart of All Souls community; it's you who brings people together from all over Central Florida for two days of much needed fellowship; it's you who points a spotlight at Christ by sharing your gifts and love with others. And, by making it fun to be with All Souls, it's you who helps introduce so many to Christ.

Thank You For Your Support! As 2021 progresses, ushering in a fresh outlook, we want to pause

to say Thank you. Thank you to all who have helped to keep our

Parish going through the past many months of pandemic, unrest,

and economic challenges. We are truly grateful for your support,

and we pray that Our Lord keeps you all safe and in His loving

embrace. May God Bless You All!

Has Mary Appeared in the U.S.?

When young Belgian immigrant Adele Brise arrived in Wisconsin

with her family, she may have expected adventure, but not to

witness the first approved Marian apparition in the United States.

In October 1859, while carrying grain to a mill,

28-year-old Adele experienced her first vision

near the area now called New Franken. Adele

saw a woman bathed in a bright light and

dressed in white, a yellow sash, and a crown of

stars. Unsure and frightened, Adele prayed

until the vision disappeared.

The following Sunday, the lady appeared

again on Adele’s way to Mass. Adele immediately consulted with

her priest, who advised that she should ask the woman, “In the

Name of God, who are you and what do you wish of me?”

Adele saw the apparition a third time on her way home from

Mass the same day, and followed the priest’s instructions. Mary

told her: “I am the Queen of Heaven, who prays for the

conversion of sinners, and I wish you to

do the same.” Our Lady then gave Adele

the mission to “gather the children in this

wild country and teach them what they

should know for salvation.”

From that time onward, Adele dedicated

her life to catechetical mission work. She

traveled a 50-mile radius on foot to serve

local families and teach children about the

Catholic faith. At the site of the Marian

apparition, Adele’s father built a small twelve-foot chapel, where

many pilgrims visited and prayed for Our Lady’s intercession.

Twelve years after Adele first encountered the Blessed Mother, a

great drought beset the Midwest. This drought caused the

Peshtigo Fire, the worst recorded fire in U.S. history. As the fire

approached Robinsonville, local families that Adele had served

came together at the chapel grounds with their children and

livestock to pray the Rosary, beseeching Our Lady to ask Jesus to

save them. They prayed through the night—and while the fire

destroyed the surrounding land, the chapel area and all who had

gathered there remained untouched.

This became the first of many miraculous occurrences through

Our Lady of Good Help’s intercession.

It’s hard to imagine, but All Souls Church has

been around since July 4, 1887, when the cor-

nerstone was first laid! Back in those days,

horses were the main form of transportation,

Grover Cleveland was president, and the first

resident, Catholic priest of Orlando had only

just arrived two years prior in 1885.

Much has changed since those

days, including the rebuilding

of the original church after a

fire in 1932. Today’s “Historic

Chapel” is the rebuilt

church, which was

completed and dedicat-

ed on July 4, 1937. Over

the years, the parish

added a rectory, con-

vent, school, cemetery,

and finally a

new, larger

church which

saw its first

Mass in 2008.

But, what real-

ly matters, what is at the heart

of All Souls, is the people of

the parish. All the dedicated

parishioners, priests and nuns,

who built the parish and God’s kingdom on earth for so many

decades. Their example is

our inspiration for the next

100 years of building a faith-

ful, loving community that

perseveres, trusting in God’s

gracious providence.

This July 4th weekend,

take a moment to also

celebrate All Soul’s

Anniversary and re-

member some of those

wonderful Catholic

trail-blazers that came

before us!

Catholic Patriotism This 4th of July

This Sunday is the Fourth of July, Independence Day in the

United States. For our children, that can mean a lot of things

fireworks, picnics, parades, flag waving. All of these are won-

derful, but as Catholics, we can make the celebration much

more spiritual, and profound.

July Fourth is a perfect opportunity to teach our children about

patriotism, authentic patriotism as a Catholic virtue. Patriotism

can be a tricky topic to understand. In our culture, many people

define it in different ways. And in years past, there have been

Catholic thinkers who have seen patriotism as a vice, and others

who have seen it as a virtue. So which is it, and how can we

properly express it?

What is patriotism? Patriotism is generally understood as a virtue, as a particular

expression of piety, which stems from the cardinal virtue of

justice. The word patriotism comes from the Latin patria, which

means father. Patriotism, then, is a love of one's fatherland, and

the fellow children of that land. That last point is important.

Patriotism is meaningless unless it is directed primarily toward

persons. For this reason, patriotism is connected to love of

neighbor, and even more particularly, to love of one's family.

hristianity arrived in China by way of Syria in the 600s. De-pending on China’s relations with the outside world, Christian-ity over the centuries was free to grow or was forced to operate

secretly. The 120 martyrs in this group died between 1648 and 1930. Eighty-seven of them were born in China, and were children, parents, cate-chists, or laborers, ranging in age from nine years to 72. This group includes four Chinese diocesan priests. The 33 foreign-born martyrs were mostly priests or women religious, especially from the Order of Preachers, the Paris Foreign Mission Society, the Friars Minor, Society of Jesus, Society of St. Francis de Sales (Salesians), and Franciscan Missionaries of Mary. Augustine Zhao Rong was a Chinese soldier who accompanied Bish-op John Gabriel Taurin Dufresse of the Paris Foreign Mission Society to his martyrdom in Beijing. Not long after his baptism, Augustine was ordained as a diocesan priest. He was martyred in 1815. Beatified in groups at various times, these 120 martyrs were canonized together in Rome on October 1, 2000. The People’s Republic of China and the Roman Catholic Church each have well over a billion members, but there are only about 12 million Catholics in China. The reasons for that are better explained by histor-ical conflicts than by a wholesale rejection of the Good News of Jesus Christ. The Chinese-born martyrs honored by today's feast were re-garded by their persecutors as dangerous because they were consid-ered allies of enemy, Catholic countries. The martyrs born outside China often tried to distance themselves from European political struggles relating to China, but their persecutors saw them as West-erners and therefore, by definition, anti-Chinese. The Good News of Jesus Christ is intended to benefit all peoples; to-day’s martyrs knew that. May 21st-century Christians live in such a way that Chinese women and men will be attracted to hear that Good News and embrace it.

St. Vincent de Paul

Scholarship Winner Katherine Embree is a graduate of Bishop Moore Catholic High School. Katherine spent her high school years playing soccer, volunteering at St. Stephen’s Catholic Church, and working with animals at Pet Suites. Two strengths that have helped Kath-erine become a caring and responsible young woman are her strong family unit and a love for animals of all kinds. Katherine will be attending the University of North Florida in Jacksonville in the Fall to study Biology, with a goal of becoming a Zoolo-gist. Vincentian Connie Lopresti, pictured here, will serve as Katherine’s Mentor. Thank you for your generosity in supporting the Society of St. Vincent de Paul at All Souls Catholic Church. Good luck Katherine!

Join The Parish Audio

Visual and Creative Team! All Souls is seeking parishioners with an

interest in photography, graphics, video

cameras, writing, social media, audio gear,

drone videos, or any form of creative activi-

ties. We're forming a new team to serve the

Church by engaging parishioners during

Masses, using the new AV system (as well

as other forms of communications). No

experience necessary, all are welcome and

appreciated! Training will be provided.

This is a fun way to serve the Church and

further the mission of reaching All Souls.

An introductory session will be held next

week, if you want to learn more, please

contact the Parish Office at 407-322-3795,

and ask for Beatriz.
