By RON HAMMERTON in LATHE all-wheel-drive beast known to car fans as ‘Rex’ is on its way in its 2014 form, wrapped in a more extreme sedan body and armed with the latest 2.0-litre turbocharged direct-injection four-cylinder boxer engine and an even more limpet-like chassis.

Subaru’s fourth-generation WRX was finally revealed at the Los Angeles motor show last week where it shared the limelight on the Japanese car-maker’s stand with a concept version of the next-generation Liberty.

The WRX hatchback – which accounted for less than 18 per cent of sales in Australia – is gone, possibly replaced by the awkwardly named Levorg sports wagon displayed at the rival Tokyo motor show held in parallel with the LA car expo last week.

Instead, the WRX badge will be applied exclusively to the all-wheel-drive, turbocharged boxer-engine sedan that has Impreza at its core but

with major revisions including mostly fresh sheetmetal including bulging mudguards and a pronounced snout.

Only the roof, front doors and bootlid remain from the Impreza, along with bits and pieces in the cabin.

Car fans will be pleased to know that the more powerful flagship STI version is alive and well and expected to land in the public domain at the Detroit motor show in January.

In Australia, which is the second- biggest market for Subaru’s WRX after the United States, the new model will hit showrooms about the end of March and will be followed about a month later by the STI. Prices are yet to be announced.

For now, Subaru is only talking about the basics of the WRX sedan that comes with a smaller 2.0-litre direct-injection boxer engine in place of the 2.5-litre unit of the current generation.

Despite the downsizing, the turbo engine produces slightly more power, up

from 195kW to 199kW at 5600rpm in the US-spec version at the show, along with an extra 6Nm of torque, to 343Nm.

Subaru Australia cautions that the final specification for the local model has yet to be confirmed, so it could vary a kilowatt or two in the final production version.

The manual WRX is expect to bolt from zero to 100km/h in about 5.5 seconds – similar to the current model – while the (shock, horror) new continuously variable transmission variant is said to do the dash in 5.9 seconds as it is a little slower off the mark.

Subaru just monthsfrom Liberty reveal

By RON HAMMERTON in LASUBARU fans will only have to wait a few months to get a peek at the final production version of the sixth-generation 2015 Liberty and related Outback crossover.

Both family cars are expected to be revealed almost simultaneously by Subaru of America in about March or April next year ahead of a mid-year sales rollout in the US, where the Liberty is known as the Legacy.

Prospective Australian buyers will have to wait until early 2015 before they can slap down the plastic on one of the new vehicles, which will be sourced from Japan for this country.

However, the American vehicles – to be made in Indiana – will look nearly identical to the Japanese variety, according to Subaru insiders at the Los Angeles motor show where a concept for the Legacy was revealed alongside the new WRX last week.

The Legacy concept is said to be a good guide as to the general style of the production version, but there will be major changes to bring the concept into line for the real world.

Continued from previous pageThe reason the car is no faster in

the dash than the previous model is that it is about 20kg heavier, thanks to greater body reinforcement and more equipment.

However, Subaru product planners say the key focus in the new-generation car was on handling, and they assure Rex fans that the latest model will be

substantially faster through curves and around the racetrack.

For all markets, the WRX finally gets a six-speed manual gearbox, replacing the five-speeder, and the optional CVT automatic lifted from the Forester GT.

Subaru says that before hardcore WRX fans poo-poo the thought of a CVT, they should know that this CVT is not your average slurring unit but a specially developed sports CVT – called Sport Lineartronic – that offers up to eight “speeds” and a slick manual mode controlled by paddles on the steering wheel.

Chassis dynamics a toppriority for Subaru withnew WRX development

WRX ‘better’ than BRZ

WRX hatch falls victim to lack of resources as Subaru pours out all-new modelsBy RON HAMMERTON in LA

SUBARU has revealed that its engineers were so stretched meeting the company’s new model ambitions that it did not have the resources to develop a direct replacement for the WRX hatch as well as the all-new WRX sedan that broke cover at the Los Angeles motor show last week.

Mind you, one of the new models that has been soaking up resources at Subaru’s Japanese technical centre is the

Levorg – a small but hot sports wagon that is likely to partly fill the void left by the WRX hatch, at least in Japan where it will go on sale early next year and possibly Australia, which has put up its hand for the pioneering model.

The Levorg wagon – armed with all-wheel drive and a choice of either a 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine – was shown at the Tokyo motor

last week, just as the WRX sedan was appearing in Los Angeles.

Apart from the new WRX, Subaru has had its hands full with development of the new-generation Legacy (Liberty in Australia) that appeared in concept form alongside the WRX at the LA car expo ahead of its expected production start in the US by mid-2014.

By RON HAMMERTON in LASUBARU channelled its inner BRZ when re-engineering its famous fun machine, the all-wheel-drive WRX, that was unveiled at last week’s Los Angeles motor show.

Although power and torque have been increased only marginally in the new, smaller 2.0-litre boxer engine (and it is a new engine over the current model, despite what you might read elsewhere), the new WRX is said to be much faster where it counts – through the twisty bits.

In fact, the steering turn-in has been improved to such an extent in the new fourth-generation model that it is said to be sharper and more controlled than that of the rear-drive Subaru BRZ that has

been a worldwide hit for its handling capabilities and fun factor.

Due in Australian showrooms about March next year, the new sedan-only WRX has an all-new body again borrowed from the latest Impreza, along with a new engine based on the direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder boxer that made its debut in the latest Forester XT.

However, instead of 177kW like the Forester XT, the WRX gets a re-wrangled 199kW version, giving it a slight power advantage over the old 195kW 2.5-litre

boxer in the current WRX.The word from within Subaru is that

the flagship high-performance STI will retain a 2.5-litre engine when it follows the WRX into Australia in about April, probably gaining direct injection and other niceties.

The WRX also gets a new six-speed manual gearbox in place of the old five-speeder, curing an issue with a large gap in the ratios from fourth gear to top.

Australia works on caseto bring sports-focusedturbo wagon range here

Levorg ‘true to Subaru’

By MIKE COSTELLO and BARRY PARK in TOKYO

SUBARU Australia has its hand in the air to be among the first markets to offer the new Levorg performance tourer as a replacement for the axed WRX hatch, if its Japanese parent gives the green light to exports beyond its domestic market.

Revealed last week as a prototype in Tokyo, the Levorg offers one of two punchy new turbo engines and a practical wagon body. With the new WRX to be a sedan-only proposition, its potential in Subaru’s global line-up is obvious.

Developed to merge Subaru’s “unique approach to sport and touring performance cars”, the all-wheel-drive Levorg will be offered with the choice of either a 1.6-litre or 2.0-litre direct-injection turbocharged four-cylinder boxer engine. Production will commence soon, with Japanese sales to start in the New Year.

Speaking to GoAuto from the show stand, Subaru Australia managing director Nick Senior said the company would soon enter discussions to bring it Down Under, provided it could prove it would add incremental volume.

“We’ve put our hand up for it,” he said. “Discussions start early next year (but) it’s not clear if it will be available for export.”

Mr Senior said the issue would be canvassed at a Subaru world distributor conference held after the show, with Australia and other likely export destinations all pushing the case.

“From a market perspective I think it’s unique,” said Mr Senior. “It’s true to Subaru, in terms of opening up another

segment of the market.“If it is designed as a whole new

model in the Subaru line-up, that’s where it has got to sit, it has to add incremental volume. We want to keep our line-up simple.”

Meantime, at the Tokyo reveal, Subaru thanked its loyal following in Australia by branding them in film with a new name – Subarists.

The Japanese car-maker’s president and chief executive Yasuyuki Yoshinaga said at the unveiling that the car-maker’s strong global growth in recent years was all down to its customers.

Petrol-electric Mazda3 isan impressive first effortbut no green light for Oz

Mazda’s hybrid future

By BARRY PARK in YOKOHAMAMAZDA says internal combustion engines still feature firmly in its future, but it still has to have a hand in hybrid and electric powertrain technology, as evidenced by the launch in Japan last week of its first-ever petrol-electric model housed in the shell of an all-new Mazda3.

All indications are that the fuel-sipping version – it will officially use about 3.2 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres on the Japanese fuel cycle rating – will only be sold in Japan where domestic brands need to have a hybrid model to stay relevant with buyers.

Despite the Australian arm of the Japanese car-maker saying it had not even been offered hybrid as a choice for the new 3 line-up, GoAuto was given the opportunity to sample one on a brief 20-kilometre drive loop through suburban Yokohama, south of Tokyo.

Our first impressions are that it is an excellent first effort. However, there is a problem: the Mazda3’s potential

Australian customers – mums and dads – are not all that interested in the technology.

And according to Mazda Australia managing director Martin Benders, the lack of fleet and government buyers with corporate-average carbon dioxide targets means the hybrid model misses out on the part of the market where most of the hybrid action sits.

Until something changes – Mr Benders suggests a sharp rise in fuel prices, or even government incentives encouraging more fuel-efficient technologies – the Mazda3 Hybrid is at best an outside chance of coming to Australia.

Indeed, so far the petrol-electric Mazda3 is only on sale in Japan and only as a sedan, with no hatchback version largely due to packaging issues with the battery pack.

The upcoming Mazda3 saves about 70 kilograms in weight compared with the model it replaces, largely due to a

program of weight-shedding as part of the SkyActiv program.

However, in hybrid form including its electric motor and bank of batteries tucked in behind the rear seat – this means like the Camry Hybrid, the rear seats do not split-fold – the Mazda3 Hybrid weighs in at 1390kg, or slightly more than a current Mazda3.

The Mazda Alexia Hybrid-S L model we drove is a higher-end version that, in Australia, would slot in somewhere between the mid-range Maxx Sport and higher-end SP models in terms of specification.

Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder SkyActiv-G petrol engine delivering 73kW of power from 5200rpm and 142Nm of torque from 4000rpm. This is mated to an electric motor that pitches in an extra 60kW of power and a combined 207Nm of torque when added to the petrol engine’s output.

Mazda’s hybrid futureContinued from previous page

Apart from the ‘SkyActiv HEV Technology’ badge on the rear below the subtle bootlid spoiler that denotes this is a more richly equipped model, there is little to tell that this is anything other than a normal Mazda3.

However, it does sit on 16-inch alloys clad in low-rolling-resistance Bridgestone Ecopia tyres that help the petrol-electric hybrid Mazda3 hit the low fuel consumption average.

In Japan, the hybrid technology sourced from Toyota’s development program for the fuel-miserly Prius hatchback – Mazda says it is the current-generation Prius technology rather than a generation past – includes a Camry Hybrid-esque stack of batteries across the back of the rear seat.

It is a compromise over the non-hybrid Mazda3, because it means the petrol-electric version misses out on the split-fold function for the rear seats – no quick trips to Ikea, then.

The hybrid model adds about $3000 to the price of a Mazda3 in Japan, meaning that if the model is ever considered

for Australia, it would likely be up to $4000 more expensive once local price rises to pay for the raft of new SkyActiv technology are taken into account.

The interior of our hybrid is light despite its spread of black materials, and classy. There are no problems with headroom – our car lacks a sunroof, opening up acres of space – and the leather-trimmed driver’s seat is comfortable and supportive.

Even in the rear, which we sampled briefly after ducking under the steeply falling roofline, knee and toe room are adequate thanks to the scalloped-out front seat, and the pews are comfy and surprisingly supportive.

One miss we did notice are door pockets. Mazda has built drink bottle holders into both the front and rear doors, but apart from a couple of cupholders in between the front seats and a decent-sized tray at the foot of the centre console, there are few easily

accessed stash points. It is the first time this writer has been

able to play with Mazda’s new multimedia interface. The seven-inch screen sits high on the dash, and easy-to-read icons make it simple to navigate the menus via a BMW iDrive-like dial controller mounted in between the front seats.

Push the button to start the Mazda3 Hybrid, and instantly you’ll start to notice a few differences.

The first is the quiet. Like the Prius, the Mazda3 Hybrid is silent on start-up, with a green car icon illuminating on the dash to indicate it is powered up and ready to drive. There is an ‘EV’ button down by the driver’s right knee that will force the Mazda3 into electric mode, which allows it to creep around at low speeds and for a couple of kilometres without firing up the petrol engine

Product program pushesall-new Mazda crossoverto back of current queue

CX-3 sidelined – for now

By BARRY PARK in TOKYOMAZDA has pushed its compact CX-3 crossover to the back of its current development cycle, meaning it could be around three years before the Japanese car-maker has a toe in one of Australia’s fastest-growing segments.

Speculation has been rife that Mazda would launch a version of the CX-3 in 2014, providing a rival for the likes of the Subaru XV, Hyundai i30, Nissan Juke, Holden Trax and Ford EcoSport.

However, according to Mazda’s global managing executive officer in charge of business strategy, Kiyoshi Fujiwara, the car-maker has higher priorities.

“We needed time to develop each individual product starting with the CX-5, therefore we just put the cycle of the CX-3 in the last stage compared to

other vehicles,” Mr Fujiwara said at the Tokyo motor show last week.

“Especially starting from next year and onward, we have a very important model called the Mazda2,” he said.

Mazda has focused on its key volume-selling cars including the CX-5 small SUV and the all-new Mazda3 small hatch and sedan range, and will introduce the all-new Mazda2 light car next year.

A Mazda insider told GoAuto that the company had to concentrate on its bread-and-butter line-up before focusing on other models, including the

much anticipated Mazda3 MPS, which is also earmarked as a low priority for the brand, despite its halo effect on the rest of the small car line-up.

The new CX-3 is expected to share the underpinnings of the Mazda2, which is due to hit the motor show circuit in the first half of next year wearing the SkyActiv badge denoting a suite of Mazda’s latest fuel-efficient technologies.

Mazda still committed torotary engine but no firmword on model timetable

Kogai backs rotary engine

By BARRY PARK in TOKYOMAZDA’S on-again, off-again love affair with the rotary engine appears to be back on again, although the Japanese car-maker has admitted there are still a lot of obstacles to clear.

Speaking via a translator last week on the eve of the Tokyo motor show, Mazda Motor Corporation president and chief executive Masamichi Kogai insisted that the company remained committed to the Wankel engine, but he refused to set a timeline for its return, or even which vehicle it is likely to appear in.

Asked if the rotary project had been sidelined ahead of an expected appearance at this year’s show, Mr Kogai

said the project was still alive.“My answer is no in terms of killing

off (the rotary engine),” he said.“You know that we’ve already put

more than two million rotary engine vehicles on the road. I just like to point out that of all the automotive makers in the world, Mazda is the only one that has engineering and in Japan the facilities to produce a rotary.

“So we want to fulfil the possibility as the past maker of rotary engines, and we want to

see what potential the engine will have in the future of our industry.”

Asked directly if Mazda would produce

a rotary-engined car where the powerplant was not used as a range-extender for a battery-powered vehicle, Mr Kogai again did not rule out the possibility.

“There is a possibility, I won’t deny it,” he said. “The rotary engine has the benefit originally of being compact, low noise and also being able to accommodate a variety of fuels.

“It is high-powered and can also run on hydrogen. So because of this flexibility in the kind of fuel that it uses I don’t think we should terminate the future potential that the engine may have.”

Rotary engine could liveon as flex-fuel generatorfor Mazda’s electric cars

By BARRY PARK in TOKYOASK Mazda about the long-term future of its rotary engine, and the answer has tended to be vague.

Short of consigning the fuel-thirsty, emissions-heavy engine to the automotive scrapheap, the Japanese car-maker has consistently said the Wankel-cycle rotary still has a place in its future.

What has never been clear is how it will play a part in Mazda’s future. However, GoAuto’s quick drive last week of a prototype vehicle that may one day be earmarked for production suggests it will live on, just not as we remember it.

Mazda’s future application for the rotary relies on our fear of the unknown.

The rollout of battery-electric vehicles throughout the world has given rise to a new phenomenon known as range anxiety, where EV drivers worry about how far their batteries will carry them, and fret that they will run out of juice short of their destination.

Mazda’s program manager for advanced powertrains, Takashi Suzuki, said that since the launch of a battery-powered version of the Mazda2 in Japan last year, seven out of 10 customers said they were either “dissatisfied, or

very dissatisfied” with the car’s 200km range, despite the availability of quick recharging services.

“That is a problem with many EV users today,” Mr Suzuki said. “We needed to solve the problem from the automotive side; we could either increase the amount of battery storage, or think about range extenders.”

Those fears have already spurred a generation of longer-range plug-in hybrid electric vehicles such as BMW’s forthcoming i8 sportscar and Mitsubishi’s Outlander PHEV SUV, as well as range-extended electric vehicles like Holden’s Volt hatchback and BMW’s i3 city car.

The idea for cars such as the i3 is to add a small petrol engine that acts as a generator, recharging batteries on the fly to double the range of the vehicle compared with just battery power alone.

While BMW has fitted the i3 with a motorcycle engine, Mazda has taken a less conventional approach – fitting a compact, horizontally mounted rotary engine to a generator that can sandwich into a tight space.

According to Mazda, the beauty of

the 330cc rotary engine, aside from its compact form, is the engine’s ability to run on a number of different fuels such as butane and propane, the key ingredients in LPG, and not just petrol. It also has fewer moving parts, making it cheaper to manufacture than a conventional engine.

Pointing more towards its future application, the car-maker has run a fleet of rotary-engined RX-8 sports coupes for almost a decade using hydrogen as a fuel, and producing only water as a by-product.

Now, it has expanded the technology to a one-off Mazda2 concept car called the TPEV.

Mazda has taken a plug-in battery- electric version of its Mazda2, hooked the rotary engine up to a 20kW alternator, and hung it off the chassis where the fuel tank would normally sit.

The idea is that the plug-in Mazda2 will run just like an electric vehicle until the batteries fall to a certain level of charge. Once that threshold is reached, the rotary engine will fire up to recharge them, doubling the range of the vehicle to about 400km.

Finding the rangeContinued from previous page

In theory, that’s not all that fuel efficient. The current car has a nine-litre fuel tank, which means the average fuel economy over the 400km range is an impressive 2.25L/100km – although nowhere near the Holden Volt’s official 1.2L/100km average.

However, this is a prototype engine, and Mazda says the production version of the range-extended Mazda2 would need to either match or better the BMW i3’s 0.6L/100km average.

To look at, the range-extended Mazda2 is surprisingly normal. It sits on tiny 14-inch alloys clad in Yokohama Aspec rubber.

Instead of a fuel flap for the petrol tank down the rear, the Mazda2 EV features a flap on the front guard that opens up to a standard electric vehicle recharging plug.

Down the rear is a bit different, though. Instead of a factory diffuser

below the rear bumper, engineers have patched on a low-hanging black plastic panel that features a block of small holes drilled out of it to provide ventilation for the rear-mounted recharging unit.

Jump in behind the wheel, and once again there is much that is familiar about the Mazda2. Apart from a big, red button marked “EMERGENCY” mounted high on the dash, it looks like any other road-going car.

For testing purposes, Mazda has set up the rotary recharger to kick in at speeds above 10km/h – handy given that our test loop is two laps of a 100-metre length of narrow tarmac squeezed in between a building and a chainlink fence.

Setting the Mazda2 in motion is the same as any other car; foot on the brake,

put the gear selector into drive, release the handbrake and then roll on some throttle.

The joy of electric motors is that they are well suited to accelerating, taking very little time to reach maximum torque. It’s the same in the electric Mazda2.

The car builds speed quickly, reaching 10km/h within seconds. There is a slight shudder, and then a noise like a leaf blower from down the back of the Mazda2 as the rotary-engined generator fires into life.

It’s a bit of a surprise, because Mr Suzuki had told us the rotary engine was an ideal candidate for the role based on its traditionally quiet, smooth operation.

Sportscar development on hold as priorities shift to SUVs, eco technology

Mitsubishi narrows focus

By TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYOA RETURN to the sportscar arena appears off the cards for Mitsubishi for now, with the company confirming it will channel its resources into perfecting its electric vehicle and plug-in hybrid technology instead.

Punters hoping for a return of iconic models like the 3000GT from the 1990s or the FTO will have to wait a bit longer as the Japanese car-maker has put development of performance models on hold.

A return to the segment has not been completely ruled out, with the company’s head of product planning suggesting hybrid or EV tech could power any possible future performance vehicle.

Mitsubishi’s Ralliart sports sub-brand could live on, but with more input from local subsidiaries, rather than from the company’s Japanese headquarters.

Speaking at the Tokyo motor show last week, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation managing director and head officer of product projects and strategy group,

Ryugo Nakao, confirmed the company’s strong focus on green technology has meant the focus has shifted from performance cars.

“We would like to maintain the Ralliart brand, however not the development of

this car,” he said. “Instead we hope that distributors of each country can actually support us in development of Ralliart.”

Nakao-san said the company’s green technology is not yet at a point where it could be used in a mass-production performance car, but that Mitsubishi will continue to develop this for

future vehicles.“For our sportscar segment, with

our current technology, it is very difficult to conduct environmental protection. Therefore we cannot do both environmental protection and sportscar protection at the same time.

“It takes time for us to make it possible to do so. Therefore, we would like to focus on development of electric vehicles and PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicles) first and then based upon this development, the PHEV, we would like to support the next-generation sportscar in the future if possible.”

Earlier this month, the Japanese car-maker released details of its ‘New Stage 2016’ business plan that narrows its in-house focus on core SUV models, and on EV and PHEV development. Part of the plan includes development of a D-segment mid-size sedan and a C-segment small sedan – the latter is widely believed to be a replacement for the ageing Lancer – with the Renault-Nissan Alliance.

GoAuto takes a first drivein production plug-in SUVahead of Australian launch

Outlander PHEV here soon

By TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYOMITSUBISHI Australia will soon enter its petrol-electric SUV future in earnest, with the Outlander PHEV (plug-in hybrid electric vehicle) set to arrive in showrooms in late March or early April next year at the vanguard of a slew of green off-roaders.

While development of the Outlander PHEV started some years ago, the Japanese car-maker has since announced plans to shift its focus to electric vehicles and all manner of hybrids, including mild hybrids and plug-in versions.

But before hybrid versions of the next-generation Pajero and ASX arrive over the coming years, the Outlander will fly the flag for the brand from next year with a plug-in drivetrain and segment-leading fuel economy.

Originally scheduled for release locally in mid-2013, Mitsubishi pushed back the launch of the PHEV more than once due to demand in its home market of Japan and some European countries, as well as battery production limitations.

The company has also overcome issues from earlier this year relating to the batteries in some Japanese-spec versions overheating and melting, causing Mitsubishi to issue a recall.

Mitsubishi Motors Australia Limited

(MMAL) is keeping its cards close to its chest as far as pricing and specification is concerned, but PHEV variants will sit at the top of the Outlander range.

Currently, prices range from $27,640 plus on-road costs for the two-wheel-drive ES all the way up to $46,790 for the AWD turbo-diesel Aspire. It is believed MMAL wants to keep pricing under $60,000 for the PHEV, putting it in base-model Range Rover Evoque and BMW X3 territory.

There is no word on whether MMAL will offer the PHEV tech in a base model variant to send it under $50,000. In Japan, the PHEV sells from ¥3,324,000 ($A35,693) to ¥4,297,000 ($A46,230), with a government incentive for green vehicles meaning buyers can claim up to ¥430,000 ($A4617) of the retail price back.

There are currently no incentives

available for such vehicles in Australia through federal or state and territory governments.

GoAuto was given the chance to drive the Outlander PHEV last week at the Mobara circuit, two hours’ drive east of Tokyo.

The drive comes two years after we sampled a test mule of the PHEV hiding under the previous generation’s body in December 2011.

A quick glance at the design of the Outlander PHEV would suggest it is identical to the regular petrol and diesel variants that launched in Australia a year ago, but closer inspection reveals subtle styling differences such as a redesigned tail-light cluster, different alloy wheel design, a 30mm-lowered ride height and the addition of the PHEV-only ‘Arctic Silver’ body colour.

FINAL CALL FOR REGISTRATIONS

By TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYOMITSUBISHI Motors Corporation president Osamu Masuko is confident in the company’s plan to push core SUV models and focus less on traditional sedans.

Unveiling three new SUV concepts at the Tokyo motor show last week – including previews for the next Pajero (GC-PHEV) and ASX (XR-PHEV) – Masuko-san said the new models formed a major part of the company’s recently announced ‘New Stage 2016’ business plan.

This plan involves a change in direction for the brand, with focus shifting heavily towards its core SUV line-up as well as electric vehicle and hybrid drivetrain development and collaboration with the Renault-Nissan Alliance on future C- and D-segment models.

Masuko-san acknowledged there was some risk involved in relying on SUV sales, but said Mitsubishi was better placed by concentrating on segments it already performs well in.

Mitsubishi SUV attackcomes alive in TokyoPHEV SUV here soon

Continued from previous pageThe cabin is pure Outlander, with just

a few indications hinting at the fuel-sipping tech under the bonnet including a different gearshift lever, buttons to charge or save the battery, and digital displays highlighting the mode and charge of the battery.

Again, there is no indication of equipment levels for the Australian-spec version, but the expected price premium should ensure a generous standard features list when it arrives next year.

The Outlander’s hi-tech plug-in hybrid powertrain is its obvious selling point, and the company is hoping environmentally conscious Australian buyers will be just as keen as Japanese and European buyers to lower greenhouse emissions.

MMAL suggested the PHEV variant could sell around 100 units per month once released, but globally ambitions are

high for the green-powered SUV, with a senior Mitsubishi executive predicting sales of 30,000 units to the end of the Japanese fiscal year in March 2014.

Borrowing technology from its tiny i-MiEV full-electric stablemate, which is no longer actively sold in Australia, the Outlander PHEV is powered by a 87kW/186Nm 2.0-litre petrol engine in combination with two 60kW electric motors – one placed at the front and one at the rear of the vehicle – and a 12kWh lithium-ion battery located under the centre floor for improved weight distribution.

Regenerative braking technology is used to charge the battery, but it can also be fully topped-up via a 200-volt household outlet in around four hours, or 30 minutes with a quick-charger.

‘Tough, safe, reassuring’Mitsubishi to tackle brandperception, quality issues

Diamonds in the rough

By TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYOMITSUBISHI Motors Corporation will concentrate on improving its overall brand perception and work to build confidence in the quality of its products as a part of its aggressive plan to build sales between now and 2016.

The Japanese car-maker does not enjoy the same brand awareness, quality or sales as some of its competitors, including Toyota and Nissan, but the company’s ‘New Stage 2016’ business plan includes measures to address this.

Speaking to Australian media at the Tokyo motor show last week, MMC president Osamu Masuko acknowledged brand perception could be improved.

“We would like to realise a very reliable, reassuring, trustworthy, powerful brand,” he said. “Tanamoshii is the (Japanese) word.

“The image of Mitsubishi Motors, relatively speaking, is not refined. It is tough, safe and reassuring. Although it might not be perfect, that is the type of vehicle manufacturing we would like to do.”

Mitsubishi will roll out electric

vehicles, hybrids and plug-in hybrids across its range in the coming years and Masuko-san believes brand-building could come off the back of this technology, suggesting that PHEV technology “is the exciting part”.

Keeping vehicles such as the high-performance Lancer Evolution in the company’s line-up is another way to maintain a bit of sizzle, and Masuko-san suggested the PHEV technology that is likely to end up in the next-generation model could enhance the Evo and, in turn, the brand as a whole.

However, as GoAuto has reported, there is no confirmation that a new Lancer Evo will be built – in the short- to mid-term, at least – with Mitsubishi looking to share a Nissan-Renault model for its next C-segment contender.

MMC’s product and strategy

chief Ryugo Nakao also said last week the company “cannot do both environmental protection and sportscar ‘protection’ at the same time”.

Mr Masuko said the company was considering its options on Lancer Evo.

“For Evolution fans, it (the current model) is maybe a little bit too big. If you think about the original Evolution function, in order to continue on, the size of the vehicle should be reviewed I think,” he said.

“And the all-wheel drive and Super All-Wheel Control

technology, we would like to combine with PHEV. So with a complete new technology in a real sense of evolution, we would like to challenge using this new type of technology.”

New Mitsubishi deal withNissan-Renault could seebelated 380 replacement

Mid-size sedan agenda

No Express successor soon as Mitsubishi looks to Triton to pick up sales volumeBy TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYO

MITSUBISHI Motors Corporation has ruled out introducing more light commercial vehicles to its line-up beyond the Triton utility as it tightens its focus to SUVs and green technology, making a successor to the discontinued Express van unlikely for now.

Japan’s fifth-largest car-maker confirmed last week it would stick with the Triton only, rather than adding to its stable of LCVs, despite a greater focus on emerging markets where such vehicles are popular.

Speaking at the unveiling of its three concept vehicles at the Tokyo motor show, Mitsubishi Motors Corporation managing director and head officer of product projects and strategy group Ryugo Nakao said the company’s LCV range would continue with the Triton, for the time being at least.

“As of today, we want to focus on the one-tonne pick-up trucks and if we can afford more resources in the future, maybe we can consider development for other LCV but so far we haven’t considered expansion,” he said.

The current Triton went on sale in Australia at the beginning of 2006 and is due to be replaced by an all-new model – previewed by the GR-HEV concept at the Geneva motor show in March – during 2014.

By TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYOMITSUBISHI Motors Corporation will consider right-hand-drive production of its forthcoming D-segment Galant replacement depending on demand, meaning a possible Australian berth for its reborn mid-sizer.

The company’s ‘New Stage 2016’ plan announced earlier this month includes collaboration with the Renault-Nissan Alliance on both a D- and C-segment (small) car to reduce costs and enable Mitsubishi to focus on SUV and EV development.

The next-generation sedan will be targeted at the American market where mid-size models such as the Toyota Camry and Honda Accord are among the top-selling vehicles, but Mitsubishi has not ruled out selling the vehicle in other markets.

MMC managing director and head officer of product projects and strategy group Ryugo Nakao said that while the company was yet to make any firm decisions on the D-segment car, they would consider different territories if the demand was there.

“We are also considering the introduction of the D-segment sedan as a part of that alliance for the American market,” he said.

“We have to make further study. If we are going to introduce this car to the Australian market, we need to launch the left-hand drive first. If we consider

right-hand drive we need to consider how many countries and how much volume we can expect for right-hand-drive vehicles.”

Should a mid-size sedan get the green light for right-hook production and an Australian berth, it will mark a return to the segment for Mitsubishi after it ceased local production of the 380 sedan in 2008.

The 380 was the replacement for the Magna that sold in Australia for 20 years between 1985 and 2005.

Sub-$30K opening salvofor new Nissan mid-sizesedan range now on sale

Altima in at $29,990

By DANIEL GARDNERNISSAN has jumped into the fierce Australian medium-car market against the likes of Toyota’s locally made Camry and the Mazda6 with its all-new Altima, priced from a sharp $29,990 plus on-road costs.

Illustrating its volume aspirations, Nissan is predicting base versions of the car will perform well in the competitive fleet market, with up to 60 per cent of sales at the bottom end expected to go to business buyers.

While it may be dimensionally similar to the outgoing and low-selling Maxima large sedan, Nissan is pitching the Altima at a different sort of buyer, notably using its V8 Supercar team to boost appeal.

The company insists the Altima is not a direct Maxima replacement, but without a new Maxima on the horizon, it will serve as such.

Therefore, the Altima – at least, a racing chassis with an Altima bodyshell – fights the Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon on the circuit at the same time as it goes toe-to-toe with Holden’s Malibu and Ford’s Mondeo on the road.

Speaking at the Australian launch last week, Nissan Australia CEO Peter Jones is hopeful the Altima will continue the

success it has experienced in other parts of the world, and he projects segment-wide growth of six per cent by 2016.

“This car is hugely successful in the US, from time to time it is the number-one seller, but we are going to see where it settles,” he said, before stating the company’s volume aspirations did not extend to overtaking the dominant Camry, which has around 30 per cent market share.

“We’ve got great competition against Camry but we don’t aspire to be number one,” he said. “It is a very, very competitive segment, especially in the fleet market.

“The way these cars are specified it is going to be aimed specifically at the fleet market – 2.5 litre... We have been out talking to the fleet customers.”

Kicking off the range is the fleet-focused ST at $29,990, with a 2.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine producing 127kW of power and 230Nm of torque, coupled to a continuously variable transmission and returning combined-cycle fuel consumption of 7.5 litres per 100km.

Mid-series ST-L and Ti variants share the same powertrain with added equipment priced from $35,890 and

$40,190 respectively.Moving up to the $45,390 top-spec

Ti-S variant puts a 183kW/312Nm 3.5-litre V6 under the bonnet, with economy of 9.3L/100km and adds everything on the options list except premium paint colours.

No manual gearbox option is available for the new Altima but the Ti-S variant has steering column-mounted gearshift paddles incorporated with the X-tronic CVT.

Fitted to all variants, the Altima’s so-called ‘Zero-Gravity’ seat design reportedly uses NASA research to hold occupants in a position similar to one naturally adopted in space. Nissan claims the result is excellent comfort, support and reduced fatigue for passengers during long journeys.

Also debuting in the new model is Nissan’s ‘Active Understeer Control’, which uses inside-wheel braking to counter understeer and maintains a predictable course during enthusiastic driving or on low-grip surfaces.

By RON HAMMERTON in LAHOLDEN’S design studio will continue regardless of any decision affecting the company’s manufacturing future in Australia, according to the man calling the shots on General Motors’ global design, Ed Welburn.

“Design will be there and will be supported by quality engineers,” the GM vice-president of global design told GoAuto at the Los Angeles motor show last week. “The design team there is so good, and we depend on them so much globally.”

Mr Welburn revealed that Holden designers were working on a number of international projects for Chevrolet, Buick and Cadillac, including a couple of concept cars to be seen at motor shows in future.

“They are involved in an awful lot of what we are doing,” he said. “Some of their work you will see at a couple of shows coming up.

“All I can say is that there are a couple of concept vehicles that the Holden design studio has a very significant role in, in their design and the actual build of the concept of the vehicles – the fabrication.”

Mr Welburn said most of the Holden work was on Chevrolet and Buick, with just a little on Cadillac.

“And they continue to do this work,” he said. “They do far more than Holden products.”

Mr Welburn said GM’s top executives understood the importance of the Holden design contribution, and continued to support the studio in Melbourne.

“The leaders of the company understand how valuable they are to us,” he said. “We will continue to use their studio and they will continue to be supported by a quality team of engineers. Design will continue.”

GM Holden is locked in discussions with the new federal government on the future of its manufacturing operations in Adelaide – the site of its main assembly plant at Elizabeth – and Melbourne, where it has a V6 engine factory.

Holden hopes to build replacements for its current Commodore large car and Cruze small car from about 2016-17, taking GM manufacturing in Australia beyond 2020.

By TERRY MARTINFORD will unveil its new-generation Mustang on December 5 at a simultaneous global reveal spanning four continents, including Australia.

Confirmed for release in Australia, the sixth generation of the iconic pony car will become the flagship sportscar in the Ford range with the discontinuation of the Ford Performance Vehicles brand next year and the demise of all Australian-built Falcon sports sedans by the end of 2016.

While no official Australian launch date has been set for the Mustang, it is expected to arrive here either late in 2015 or early 2016, just months before Ford’s Australian factories close.

Announcing the December 5 unveiling on the eve of the LA auto show in the US last week, Ford’s executive vice-president of global marketing, sales and service, Jim Farley, said the company had commenced a 15-day ‘Mustang Inspires’ campaign in the lead-up to the muscle-car’s simultaneous unveiling in New York, Los Angeles, Dearborn, Barcelona, Shanghai and Sydney.

New global SUV set to replace Aussie Ford TerritoryBy TERRY MARTIN

FORD revealed a near-production concept version of its next-generation Edge SUV at the Los Angeles auto show that is set to replace the Australian-built Territory here in 2016.

With Territory to be discontinued alongside Falcon when the company closes its Australian factories in three years’ time, Ford will move to plug the high-volume gap in its line-up between the Kuga small SUV and the forthcoming locally developed Everest based on the Ranger utility.

There is a new-generation Explorer also in the works, but GoAuto understands the Edge is the clear frontrunner and all but locked in for the Australian market.

However, it not expected to be renamed ‘Territory’ as some pundits

have suggested. Ford senior management confirmed

in LA last week that the next-generation Edge would move from being a North American-focused model to a global vehicle that would bring with it all the design, technology and engineering attributes that make it suitable for a broad range of markets, including Australia.

Right-hand-drive production is still to be announced, but Ford Motor Co executive vice-president Joe Hinrichs said at the concept’s unveiling that features such as its sleek and sporting appearance, fuel consumption and in-car connectivity were “in line with what customers value around the world”.

More than a showcase of new Japanese and American metal, the Tokyo and LA motor shows set the stage for world debuts and future model news from the world’s leading luxury car brands...

By RON HAMMERTON in LABMW has fired the next two shots in its 4 Series rollout by using the Los Angeles motor show to formally unveil the slinky new 4 Series Convertible – the successor to the folding-top 3 Series – and to spring a slope-backed X4 concept that resembles a downsized X6.

Comments from the show floor indicated a big thumbs up for the two-door 4 Series Convertible, which joins the new similarly styled, recently launched 4 Series Coupe in the BMW range forthwith in Europe and in Australia about March.

The reaction was more mixed for the X4, which has the same design awkwardness of the X6 but without as

much machismo.Based on the X3, it will be built

in BMW’s American SUV plant at Spartanburg, and presumably with a similar powertrain range.

The convertible continues with a three-piece folding hard-top like its predecessor, but gains an optional xDrive all-wheel-drive system for those who venture into snowy areas.

BMW says that when closed, the roof

offers enhanced acoustic comfort and opens in less than 20 seconds at the push of a button.

Three model variants will be available at launch – a turbocharged 420d diesel, petrol four-cylinder 428i and a turbocharged 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder 435i. Outputs range from 135kW to 225kW of power.

BMW 4 SERIES CONVERTIBLE, X4 CONCEPT

By RON HAMMERTON in LAJAGUAR has launched its sleek new F-Type Coupe, describing it as the most dynamically capable, performance-focused production model the British luxury brand has ever built.

Powered by a 405kW 5.0-litre

supercharged V8 in its flagship F-Type R variant, the spiritual successor to the famed Jaguar E-Type blasted into sight in dramatic fashion in Los Angeles last week when it was driven at full throttle under a grandstand packed with hundreds of journalists and celebrities at Raleigh Studios.

The car was displayed at both the Tokyo and LA motor shows ahead of a 2014 rollout around the world, including Australia where it will enter showrooms in about the third quarter – one year after the convertible.

The most powerful of the three F-Type Coupe models, the R, can hit 100km/h in

just 4.2 seconds – 0.1 seconds faster than the F-Type V8 S Convertible – making it the fastest Big Cat in the range. Its top speed is limited to 300km/h.

Instead of a 364kW supercharged V8 like the convertible S, the new coupe gets the XKR-S’s 405kW unit that also pumps out 680Nm of torque – 57Nm more than the topless F-Type.

The F-Type Coupe will also be offered with a choice of two more affordable supercharged 3.0-litre V6 engines, in 280kW and 250kW guises, in the F-Type Coupe and F-Type Coupe S.

By TERRY MARTINLEXUS has officially confirmed that its RC coupe is coming to Australia, following the brand-boosting new two-door model’s unveiling at the Tokyo motor show last week.

Set to take on German rivals such as the BMW 4 Series, Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe and Audi A5, the RC – which is short for Radical Coupe – is expected to arrive in Australia in the final quarter of 2014.

The Australian model range is still to be confirmed, with Lexus Australia currently negotiating with Japan over drivetrain choices.

At the moment, the options are an RC350 model with a 234kW/380Nm 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine (paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission)

and an RC300h hybrid with a 131kW/221Nm 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine and 105kW electric motor (total output: 162kW), driving through a CVT with six stepped gears.

The RC is also expected to become available with the Toyota-owned luxury brand’s inaugural turbocharged powertrain – a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit revealed at the Tokyo show last week in the LF-NX Turbo compact SUV concept.

Official figures such as power,

torque and fuel economy for the new turbocharged engine remain under wraps, while a high-performance powertrain – likely a 5.0-litre V8 – is anticipated further down the track in a flagship RC F.

The four-seater RC is built off a version of the rear-drive platform underpinning the IS and GS series, resting on a 2730mm wheelbase and measuring 4695mm in overall length, 1395mm in height and 1840mm in width.

It uses a double wishbone front suspension and rear multilink design, with an initial wheel choice between 10-spoke 19-inch alloys or five-spoke 18-inch rims. The cars on display in Tokyo were fitted with 19-inch wheels with 255/35-section tyres at the front and 275/35s at the rear.

By RON HAMMERTON in LAMERCEDES-BENZ used the Los Angeles motor show to spring its latest AMG special, this time a new flagship for its GLA compact SUV range powered by the world’s most powerful four-cylinder turbo engine shared with the company’s other small hotshots such

as the CLA45 AMG and A45 AMG.Although it is officially a concept,

expect the GLA45 AMG to go into production next year and land in Australia in late 2014 – about six months after the standard GLA debuts Down Under in the second quarter.

Powered by the beastly 265kW/450Nm 2.0-litre turbo engine from the AMG hot shop, the GLA45 AMG is said to be capable of accelerating to 100km/h in less than five seconds – more than 2.0 seconds faster than the GLA250 that packs 155kW of power.

Mercedes is being deliberately

vague on performance specifics until the formal launch, and likewise has indicated only that fuel economy for the AMG-tuned GLA will be “something with a seven in front of it”.

Unveiling the concept, AMG chairman Tobias Moers described the small SUV as “a stake firmly in the ground of the strongly growing market segment of compact SUVs”.

By RON HAMMERTON in LAPORSCHE unveiled its long-awaited Macan at the Los Angeles motor show last week, billing it as the first sportscar in the compact SUV class.

It also confirmed that the Macan Turbo – the fastest variant of its new all-turbo, all-V6 line-up – will be the most powerful SUV in its league, boasting 294kW of power and a top speed of 266km/h.

Porsche Cars Australia says the sub-Cayenne crossover will make its Australian debut in mid-2014, becoming the German company’s fifth model line here. Potential buyers will not have to wait long for pricing, as that should be announced before Christmas.

The new vehicle – sharing underpinnings from Audi’s Q5 but with a full Porsche workover, including a unique body and powertrain – is expected to go straight to the top of the Porsche sales pile, displacing the Cayenne as the brand’s Australian and global sales leader, and adding large incremental volume.

Developed under the Cajun tag – short for “Cayenne junior” – the

Macan will be launched as expected with a choice of three V6 powertrains, including a new force-fed version of its petrol 3.6-litre V6 for the range-topping Macan Turbo. Porsche says it is the first time this engine has been employed in a Porsche model.

Producing 294kW at 6000rpm and 550Nm from 1350rpm, the premium V6 can propel the Macan Turbo from standstill to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds. With the addition of Porsche’s optional Sports Chrono go-fast program, this drops to 4.6 seconds – faster than BMW’s bigger and V8-equipped X5 M (4.7s).

PORSCHE MACAN

By RON HAMMERTON in LATHE battle among Europe’s luxury compact SUV manufacturers is about to get a whole lot hotter with Porsche hinting it is prepared to up the ante on power for its already sizzling new Porsche Macan Turbo, and Mercedes-Benz previewing an AMG-fettled version of its new GLA at the Los Angeles motor show last week.

While the new Macan Turbo with its twin-turbo 3.6-litre V6 packs 294kW of power – the most in its class – and

can fire from zero to 100km/h in 4.8 seconds, Mercedes has fired a shot across Porsche’s bows by announcing its upcoming 265kW four-cylinder GLA45 AMG will bolt to 100km/h in “less than five seconds”.

But Porsche vehicle line director for Macan, Hans-Jurgen Wohler, told GoAuto at the LA show last week that Porsche would “watch what the opposition do” before considering whether the Macan would get a power upgrade to keep it king of the pile.

The inference is that Porsche has the ability to step up the performance of the Macan, which is one step larger than the GLA and based on the Audi Q5.

By TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYOVOLVO looks set to introduce a dedicated premium small SUV to its burgeoning line-up, confirming last week that a concept vehicle previewing an ‘XC40’ would emerge at some point.

The Chinese-owned Swedish brand is preparing to join other European marques in offering a small SUV, including BMW with its X1, the Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz, which is gearing up to launch its new GLA early next year.

While Volvo Cars CEO Hakan Samuelsson told GoAuto at the Frankfurt motor show in September that a small SUV was firmly on the agenda,

Volvo Car Corporation senior vice-president Lex Kerssmakers confirmed in Tokyo last week that the company intended to enter the segment and that a concept previewing its future model direction would be shown.

“Yeah of course, I am a product planner so I am dreaming about an

XC40,” Mr Kerssmakers told GoAuto in Tokyo. “That would fit very naturally in our product portfolio so we are definitely looking at it. The small SUV market is really growing so we definitely want to be a part of it.”

Sales of the premium compact SUV segment in Australia were up by 62 per cent to the end of October compared to the same period last year.

Mr Kerssmakers said a concept vehicle paving the way to the production XC40 would be shown, but he could not put a timeframe on its unveiling.

VOLVO CONFIRMS XC40 ‘WILL COME’

By TIM NICHOLSON in TOKYOVOLVO is unlikely to fit future models with its much-hyped pedestrian airbag, preferring instead to push new active safety technology on cars including the long-awaited XC90 SUV.

The Swedish car-maker debuted the innovative airbag under the bonnet of its V40 hatch range that launched in Australia last February, promoting the technology’s ability to protect pedestrians against serious head injury when impact occurs between 20km/h and 50km/h.

Speaking with GoAuto at the Tokyo motor show last week, Volvo Car Corporation senior vice-president Lex Kerssmakers said the next-generation XC90 due in 2015 would maintain the car-maker’s reputation by debuting new safety technology, but would not include the pedestrian airbags.

“I am not even sure if we will continue with the bonnet (airbags) because if it’s not necessary, SUV is a pretty high car,” he said. “It’s also there for the pedestrians and they need to land soft but if the car is high, they land

soft anyhow. So no, at the moment not.”Asked whether the pedestrian airbags

could find their way to other non-SUV models in the line-up, Mr Kerssmakers said it was unlikely, pointing to a renewed focus on active safety for the brand.

Holden Trax LSHow Holden has managed to avoid pitching a properly car-based compact SUV in a market booming with them is beyond us, even if the ageing truck-like Captiva 5 fills that void. So it’s a bit of a shock to learn that the Barina-derived Holden Trax is among the first of the modern sub-compact crossover contenders, putting the company at the forefront of a coalescing segment that, truthfully, nobody knows how consumers will react to.

ANCAP awards five stars to key new Skoda modelBy TIM NICHOLSON

SKODA has boosted the safety credentials of its third-generation Octavia range launched in Australia this week with a five-star crash-test rating from the Australasian New Car Assessment Program (ANCAP).

The top result for the new Octavia – which improves on the previous generation’s four-star rating – lifts the Volkswagen Group-owned brand’s five-star-rated models to four, adding to the maximum scores achieved by the current Superb sedan and wagon, Yeti compact SUV and the Roomster tall-boy hatch range.

The ageing Fabia hatch remains the sole four-star offering in the Czech brand’s Australian line-up.

The new Octavia received an overall

score of 35.87 out of a possible 37 in the crash test, originally conducted by Euro NCAP and adjusted for the Australian-delivered front-wheel-drive version.

Priced from a competitive $21,690 (plus on-roads) for the base 103TSI manual sedan, the new Octavia is fitted standard with seven airbags, including head-protecting side curtain airbags, and a driver’s knee airbag for the first time.

It scored the maximum 16 points for the side-impact test and the two-point maximum for the pole test.

For the frontal offset test, the Octavia just missed out on a perfect score, with driver leg protection listed as “acceptable” while all other body regions rated “good”.

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISFOR profitability’s sake, BMW hopes the mid-range xDrive30d will continue to be the most popular X5 version in the new F15 series, counting on at least half of all buyers choosing the evergreen six-cylinder turbo-diesel with four-wheel drive.

This is despite a near-$20,000 gap between it and the newly announced entry-level sDrive25d with an X5-first four-cylinder engine and two-wheel drive, which opens the third-generation range from $82,900 plus on-road costs.

BMW’s call comes in the light of arch-rival Mercedes-Benz’s result for the matching M-Class, which sees its base ML250 accounting for fewer than 30 per cent of all volume.

Since BMW has more or less aligned the pricing of its best-selling luxury SUV range with Mercedes, the signs strongly suggest the sDrive25d will not topple its money-spinning bigger-engined brother.

“Clearly the X5 is one of the bedrocks of our profitability in Australia, our second best-selling car in our range after the 3 Series, and we do good numbers pretty much across the board,” said BMW Group Australia managing director Phil Horton.

“With Mercedes-Benz in particular going down to that (price point), I think about 25 to 30 per cent of their

mix is at that bottom end.“I wouldn’t like our car to be doing

more than that to be quite honest, because from overall profitability, the more of the higher-range models we sell, the better.

“But it is very useful having that part of the range covered off. Of course, we also have the X3 until they get the GLK, so for them it was a bit of a no-brainer to have that model to push as far down as possible.”

Nevertheless, Mr Horton hopes the sDrive25d and its $5000 more expensive xDrive25d AWD sibling will bring in new buyers to the X5 fold – and keep them coming back when the time comes to trade up.

“I certainly think there is a market for a two-wheel-drive X5,” he said. “It’s good for bridging the gap between it and the X3. And we can certainly see hooking

people into X5s earlier with that car. “Also it is a car that could generate

a lot of loyalty. There seems to be significantly less loyalty these days to a particular brand or a particular model, with people having more than one marque.”

The X5 has been the dominant force at the top of the charts for a decade, unsurpassed by M-Class or any other vehicle in its category since 2003.

Its sales this year are up 19.6 per cent, with the SUV commanding a 19 per cent share of the market from 2848 new registrations to the end of October.

The M-Class, by comparison, has experienced more modest growth of 6.3 per cent, which translates to 2339 sales over the same period and a 15.6 per cent share of the segment.

By MIKE COSTELLO in TOCHIGIHONDA last week displayed a production-ready concept of its MC-B (Micro Commuter-Beta) electric quadracycle, a vehicle it believes heralds the introduction in Japan of a new category of vehicle even smaller than the ‘kei’ class, called ‘ultra-micro’.

The pure-electric MC-B is a conceptually similar rival to Europeans such as the Renault Twizy, Opel Rak-e and the Audi Urban Concept.

If a proposal put to the Japanese government’s regulatory commission passes, local buyers may not even need a regular full licence to drive one on Tokyo’s hectic roads, but rather a partial licence.

Road testing is poised to get underway, with pilot studies planned for three Japanese prefectures in collaboration with local police forces: Kumamoto, Saitama and Miyakojima. Honda wants to be selling the car in Japan by 2017, although unless Australian quadracycle laws change, you will not see the MC-B Down

Under any time soon. The super-light runabout has a tandem

two-seater layout – think of it as part golf cart, part motorcycle – and uses a 15kW/57Nm electric motor and lithium-ion battery combination with a range of 80km and a charging time via a 200V input of a little more than two hours.

It is also a slick little machine. We had a brief spin around a test circuit last week at Honda’s invitation, and found the whiney little motor provided plenty of oomph to hit the 80km/h top speed in fairly rapid time, considering its appearance. We hit 50km/h in somewhere beneath 10 seconds, which is perfectly okay for inner-city commuting such as that found in Tokyo.

Measuring 2495mm long (900mm shorter than a kei car), 1280mm wide and 1545mm high, the MC-B is a breeze to park, even without power steering which adds unwanted weight. But to make it easier still, Honda has added a nifty iPad-operated parking pilot for good measure.

The owner can command the car to park itself, and remove itself from the carpark, via a tablet app that works via a plethora of ultrasonic sensors, all while standing at a distance and watching the show. A turning radius of 3.3 metres means even the tightest spot presents no drama.

We viewed a demonstration of the technology in Tochigi last week and can vouch for its efficacy, and also for the clever sensor and sonar-based system that ‘locks-on’ to a car ahead and follows it robotically, around corners, without any driver input.

Honda calls this, bizarrely, ‘duck-following’, and it works via the same tablet app that powers the parking pilot, with the device using photo recognition to target the numberplate of the car ahead, and locking it onto the same course. Honda wants technology such as this to lead to a “collision-free future”.

BUTLER STEERING WHEELS AT BAUER TRADER

By TERRY MARTINBAUER Media Group has hired Glenn Butler as editor of its flagship motoring magazine Wheels, the final key appointment after announcing in August that its major motoring titles will join the Bauer Trader stable and relocate from Sydney to Melbourne.

A respected freelance motoring writer and a former public relations manager at Mazda Australia, Mr Butler will report to experienced motoring writer and editor Ged Bulmer, a one-time editor of Wheels who was appointed managing editor of motoring

for Bauer Trader Media four months ago to oversee the new division.

Editors of the other now-Melbourne-based titles include Dylan Campbell (Motor), Matt Raudonikis (4x4 Australia), Simon Telford (Street Machine), Mitch Lees (Australasian Dirt Bike) and Kelly Buckley, who is the first female editor of Australian Motorcycle News in the title’s 62-year history.

Top Gear Australia and Auto Action magazines have remained in Sydney and are not part of the shift into the Trader division.

REUSS WELL PLACED TO SUCCEED AKERSON

By TERRY MARTINFORMER Holden chairman and General Motors’ current North America president Mark Reuss is being touted as one of only a handful of executives in line to succeed chief executive Dan Akerson at the top of the US auto giant.

While Mr Akerson is still to announce his retirement plans, the 65-year-old has described the attributes he would look for in a replacement.

“There’s no prototypical CEO,” Mr Akerson told US industry journal Automotive News. “A good leader has to be innately bright, intellectually curious. They have to be a change agent, never satisfied with the status quo.

“I think we do have people here that I think fit that bill,” he said, declining to name them. “Of course, I’m on the board and I’ll have an opinion. But that’s kind of what I would look for.”

Mr Akerson also said in the interview that he would like to see the next CEO be a calculated risk taker, who is not afraid to make mistakes – and be accountable for them.

“You have to establish accountability and an orientation to risk, recognising that we’re not a fault-free company,” he said. “Have the humility and audacity to say, ‘I made a mistake’ and back up and go down the other way.”

Ms Phipps, who notably led Ford’s Australian public relations team through the period where the company announced its intention to quit local manufacturing in 2016, will report to regional vice-president of communications Karen Hampton.

Taking over from Ms Phipps in the newly named role of communications director in Australia will be experienced US native Wes Sherwood, who presently holds the position of global quality communications manager, based in the US.

Mr Sherwood will report to Ford Australia president and CEO Bob Graziano.

Current members of Ford Australia’s PR team, brand communications manager Neil McDonald, brand communications associate Martin Gunsberg, communications associate Cheryl McKenzie and vehicle co-ordinator Eddy Sleiman will retain their existing roles and report to Mr Sherwood.

Australian expectations high as Honda unveils light-sized SUV due late in 2014By MIKE COSTELLO in TOKYO

HONDA has revealed the production-ready version of its Urban SUV concept, its first B-segment crossover since the demise of the trendsetting HR-V in 2002, and a car for which its Australian outpost has bold plans.

Called the Vezel – in Japan, at least – and based on the same low-floored architecture as the new-generation Jazz light car, the overdue city SUV contender is ready to slip into the range beneath the CR-V as a rival for the likes of Ford’s EcoSport and Nissan’s Juke.

Speaking at the reveal in Tokyo last week, Honda Australia director Stephen Collins announced the car would emerge in Australia by the end of 2014 – almost 12 months after its arrival in Japanese showrooms.

The Vezel is just one of three models to be based on the all-new Jazz platform, alongside the Jazz itself due in Australia around July 2014, and the new-generation City sedan. Honda

confirmed in Tokyo that the new City would premiere in India later this week, where it will likely be produced.

Honda’s new light-sized SUV will form a crucial plank in its medium-term goal of returning to its glory days of 2007, when it notched up 60,000 annual Australian sales, about 30 per cent more than it is primed to do in 2013.

This is because Honda believes the booming city SUV segment, up 19.3 per cent in 2013 and ready to explode with a host of new models from the likes of Ford and Renault next year, will keep expanding at a fair clip, resulting in crucial incremental sales growth.

Indeed, Mr Collins projects sales of light SUVs (classified ‘small’ by VFACTS) could soon match those of traditional compact SUVs (classified ‘medium’) such as Honda’s own CR-V. At present, medium SUVs outsell their smaller contemporaries by about 30 per cent.

“We think the small SUV market will grow in time to match the medium SUV market, cars like the CR-V,” he said. “Particularly with what’s coming from other brands as well, that whole market is expanding.”

Mr Collins said the Vezel would, by-and-large, net incremental sales, though admitted he expected some prospective Civic hatch and CR-V buyers to jump ship.

“If anything, it’s going to cannibalise cars like the Civic hatch, cars like this (Vezel) are similarly priced and ride higher,” he said.
