By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISHONDA Australia is aiming for consistent and sustainable volume growth this year on the back of surging Civic hatch and CR-V compact SUV sales.

The company expects to achieve at least 45,000 sales this year – a sizeable 25 per cent jump over the disappointing 36,000 sales it managed last year – and possibly even more.

Honda Australia director and sales and marketing manager Stephen Collins said he is quietly confident that 50,000 units is possible this year, thanks to strategic promotional activity, freer supplies from Thailand, Japan and Britain, and a continuing favourable currency situation.

“I think our volume expectations are realistic,” he told GoAuto at the Jazz Hybrid launch in Sydney this week.

“With no supply restrictions, we can do more.

“That 50,000 mark is the next base we need to get to, and beyond there we will keep building back up to 60,000, which is our mid-term goal within the next two years.

“I’d obviously like to do more, but it is a hugely competitive market with huge amounts of incentives offered above and below the line, and I think that is driving a bit of demand, and that’s why the market will be 1.1 million, but we’ll still be amongst it.”

Even with competition remaining white-hot in the small-car and compact SUV segments in which the Civic and CR-V compete, and with no respite in sight, Mr Collins expects both models will attract new customers to the brand and win back buyers who deserted it over the past five years.

“During the downturn, a number of manufacturers took customers from us. It doesn’t change overnight, and it’s our job to take them back,” he said.

Continued from previous page“The CR-V is a good example where

we’re starting to see a lot of conquest business, particularly with VTi, and that’s where Civic hatch is really important for us, too.”

Boosted by recent specification upgrades and with the long-awaited 1.6-litre turbo-diesel option coming in April, the Civic hatch is expected to lead the sedan in sales for the first time since the 1990s, with just under 16,000 buyers forecast for this year.

“The hatch market is growing faster than the small-sedan market,” Mr Collins said.

“Our focus over the last five months has been on the Civic hatch; it appeals more to a slightly younger buyer, which we think is overall good for the brand.

“The sedan is still competitive, but if we’re selling 800 hatches and 600 to 700 sedans, doing 1500 Civics a month, then that’s pretty good and that’s where

we want to be. “And attracting that younger buyer is

also important.” With the CR-V, Mr Collins said there

has been particularly strong demand for the new 2.0-litre VTi front-wheel-drive base model as well as for the top-line VTi-L 4WD version.

“We’ve only just really launched with the 2WD in the new CR-V model, and that’s conquest. And with diesel coming, that will be conquest,” he said.

“All of these things add up to us getting a lot of our customers back.”

Honda expects 14,350 CR-V sales this year – more than triple its 2012 tally of 4733 units, which was heavily impacted by the Thai floods of the year before and the subsequent model changeover.

Boosting the CR-V mid-year will be the availability of new driver-aid technologies, but the expected diesel-engined version has been delayed until early next year.

Meanwhile, the next-generation ‘wide-body’ Accord sedan will sell alongside the ageing Accord Euro for some time from the middle of this year, as Honda

has yet to decide where it will go with the Euro replacement.

“Our plan for this year is certainly that the Accord Euro will continue,” said Mr Collins. “We will sell the new wide-bodied Accord – which we launch mid-way through the year – alongside it.

“The Accord Euro was updated about 12 months ago with a model change, and beyond that point it is still a little uncertain. We have not finalised yet what will happen.

“Clearly the two-pronged Accord strategy has worked incredibly well for us, and that would be our preference in the long term, but at this stage I can’t comment on an Accord Euro replacement.”

Hybrid motoring now onoffer for less than $23Kwith Honda’s light hatch

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISHONDA hopes to find at least 50 buyers each month for its newly released Jazz Hybrid, which would make it the Japanese company’s most popular hybrid offering.

Released this week in Australia after more than two years on sale in Japan as the Fit Hybrid, the petrol-electric Jazz is priced from $22,990 plus on-road costs, making it Australia’s cheapest hybrid.

Last year, Honda sold fewer than 800 Civic, Insight and CR-Z hybrids combined in Australia.

Coming in a single specification, the five-seat Jazz Hybrid will take on the Toyota Prius C hybrid and also the economical Volkswagen Polo 66TDI turbo-diesel, with Honda expecting most buyers to be conquest sales from other brands.

Private customers are expected to account for about 70 per cent of sales, with the remainder made up of fleets seeking an inexpensive, economical and practical petrol-electric hatch.

Women buyers are expected to narrowly outnumber men.

The Jazz Hybrid uses essentially the same Integrated Motor Assist (IMA) hybrid hardware as the longer Insight.

The transverse layout of the GE-series Jazz was designed from inception to accommodate electric technology and uses its unique centrally mounted fuel tank (beneath the front seats rather than under the rear ones, as in most cars) to minimise interior packaging intrusion.

Starting from under the bonnet and moving back, there is an internal combustion engine, electric motor, transmission and fuel tank, with a battery pack positioned directly behind the rear seat under the cargo floor area below the temporary spare wheel.

Consequently, the boot floor is several centimetres higher than the regular Jazz, cutting cargo volume to the window line from 337 to 223 litres with the backrests erect, and from 848 to 722 litres in two-seater ‘utility mode’.

The floor is not flush when the ‘Magic Seats’ are folded down, but a variation of its acclaimed ‘cushion up’ functionality is carried through.

The combustion engine is Honda’s familiar 1.3-litre i-VTEC single-cam four-cylinder petrol unit, boosted by a DC brushless motor to drive the front wheels via a continuously variable transmission (CVT) with Honda’s Grade Logic Control that adapts to driver inputs and immediate terrain.

Modified with a low-friction piston design and more efficient catalytic converter, the engine delivers 65kW of power at 5800rpm and 121Nm of torque at 4500rpm.

Mazda adds potent new2.5 ‘Sky’ petrol engine to popular small SUV series

Extra CX-5 firepower

By MIKE COSTELLOMAZDA Australia has given all-wheel-drive versions of its best-selling CX-5 compact SUV a welcome dose of extra firepower, adding a more powerful 2.5-litre SkyActiv engine in place of the 2.0-litre unit in return for a $500 price hike.

The beefier new direct-injection 138kW/250Nm four-cylinder petrol engine, transplanted from the just-launched Mazda6, headlines a range update now streaming into showrooms that arrives a mere 12 months after the CX-5’s original local launch.

Following the start of its rolling

launch in February 2012, the CX-5 swiftly raced to the top of the segment sales charts, averaging 1600 sales per month and regularly shading rivals such as the Nissan X-Trail, Toyota RAV4 and Subaru Forester.

However, the fast-growing compact SUV market has seen some substantial changes over the ensuing months, with new-generation versions of the RAV4, Forester, Honda CR-V and Mitsubishi Outlander also now on sale.

By transplanting the more powerful new naturally aspirated engine into AWD versions of the CX-5, Mazda Australia simultaneously keeps the

car fresh against newer contenders and addresses a major criticism of the previous version – its underpowered engine compared to key rivals.

The new engine produces 25kW more power and 52Nm more torque than the 2.0-litre unit still used in the price-leading front-drive variants, although oddly the braked towing capacity is unchanged at 1800kg.

The extra power comes at a price, however, with the Maxx, Maxx Sport and Grand Touring variants all copping $500 price increases over their less-powerful predecessors.

Extra CX-5 firepowerContinued from previous page

Despite this price jump and the raft of refreshed rivals, Mazda expects to maintain its lofty sales numbers.

The company expects 70 per cent of sales to be petrol-powered – either the 2.0 FWD or 2.5 AWD – and 60 per cent of all variants sold to be AWD.

Peak power for the new engine of 138kW arrives at a high 5700rpm, while maximum torque hits at 4000rpm.

Power is sent to all four wheels via a standard six-speed automatic transmission (a six-speed manual gearbox is offered only on base 2.0 Maxx front-drive variants as a price-leader).

Driving the front wheels most of the time, the AWD system employs variably controlled rear torque and slip-detection technology to apportion up to 50 per cent of drive to the rear axle.

Combined-cycle fuel economy of 7.4 litres per 100km is up 0.5L/100km, but

in real-world driving the difference may be less as the 2.0-litre engine needs to be revved harder to achieve the same result.

Furthermore, the 2.5 CX-5 still trumps the RAV4 and CR-V by more than a litre per 100km, and shades the Outlander by 0.1L/100km.

All CX-5 variants come with idle-stop. The new engine is only available in

AWD versions, with cheaper front-drive variants (still from $27,880) retaining the existing SkyActiv 113kW/198Nm 2.0-litre unit.

The potent 129kW/420Nm 2.2-litre turbo-diesel engine option continues unchanged.

In addition to the new powertrain, Mazda has upgraded the Bluetooth system on all variants, added three new paint colours (Soul Red, Jet Black and

Meteor Grey) and introduced a new flagship Akera variant that will sit above the Grand Touring thanks to a host of active safety technologies.

Kicking off the AWD petrol range is the 2.5 Maxx, priced from $32,880 plus on-road costs and fitted with a 5.8-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and USB, cruise control, push-button start, power windows and 17-inch steel wheels.

The Maxx Sport, from $36,620, adds automatic headlights, dual-zone climate control, leather-covered gearshifter, handbrake and steering wheel, rain-sensing wipers, foglights, satellite navigation, six-speaker audio, 17-inch alloy wheels and 40/20/40 split-fold rear seats.

Dominant force

Toyota still aims to secure 25 per cent market share

Change of government nothreat to industry: Buttner

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISTOYOTA is confident of ongoing government co-investment regardless of the federal election outcome in September, to keep the Australian vehicle manufacturing industry viable moving into the next decade.

Toyota Australia executive vice-president and chief operating officer David Buttner said both major Australian political parties are in agreement with Toyota’s view on continuing government support.

However, he warned that fierce internal competition from other Toyota manufacturing sites around the world would always pose a threat to the production of the Camry, Aurion and the yet-to-be-announced third vehicle line at Altona (rumoured to be the next-generation Kluger).

Speaking to GoAuto last week, the Toyota veteran said his company had no desire or intention to discontinue manufacturing in the foreseeable future.

“For a company like Toyota that continues with vehicle manufacturing in Australia, it is very important that we see a policy regime in the short, medium and longer term, which is conducive to attracting investment,” said Mr Buttner.

Camry

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISTOYOTA says it is back on track to achieve 25 per cent market share thanks to improved supplies, refreshed product and continuing strong consumer demand in a buoyant market.

This is despite the company’s volume last month dipping 10 per cent – in a market that rose 11.3 per cent – due to Camry stock shortages that resulted from record sales in December.

But with the Altona plant back up to speed after the summer break shutdown, Toyota says it will have full Camry and Aurion stocks by the middle of March.

Toyota Australia executive vice-president and chief operating officer David Buttner said that a number of factors are in place for Toyota to resume its growth trend in Australia.

“(Last year) we saw our volume grow by just over 20 per cent, and our share is

getting back over 20 per cent,” he said. “So we have our sights very firmly

set on in excess of 200,000 (units) for the ninth consecutive year (in 2013), to capitalise on the product opportunities that we have, to ensure we keep pushing the volume and supporting our dealer network.

“I don’t know whether (the total new-vehicle market) will go to 1.1 million, but it is shaping up to be another million-unit market again, and that’s still a fantastic result for the marketplace.

“January started off very strongly – 10 per cent up on the previous year – so all the signs are there that consumers are still willing to buy, their confidence is still high, they have a great choice of product, and there is great value for money, so hopefully we will be able to participate in that big market.”

Australia to play key rolein global growth plans asfirst Quattroporte arrives

Maserati marches forward

Quattroporte

By MIKE COSTELLOTHE addition of three brand-new model lines and a trio of extra east-coast dealerships will form the backbone of Maserati’s ambitious goal to grow Australian sales from 124 units in 2012 to 1500 units by 2016.

By extension, the local market – which already punches above its weight as the seventh largest for Maserati worldwide – will form a crucial plank in the iconic company’s plan to sell 50,000 new vehicles worldwide in 2015, up from just 6307 units last year.

Maserati is understood to have been the recipient of a major cash injection from parent company Fiat Chrysler, with a new product to be released every six months over the next two-and-a-half years.

These include (in order) the new-generation Quattroporte flagship sedan, smaller Ghibli sedan, Levante luxury SUV, GranSport coupe and new-generation versions of the GranCoupe and GranCabrio.

As such, Maserati Australia distributor European Automotive Imports has

revealed to GoAuto that it is also working on recruiting three new dealers, with new sites in both Sydney and Melbourne planned for late 2013 and a Gold Coast outlet in early 2014.

These three new sites will expand the company’s Australian footprint beyond its current five sites – in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth – and, in a first for Maserati, operate independent from fellow Italian marque Ferrari.

Speaking with GoAuto at a viewing of the new-generation Quattroporte flagship sedan in Sydney last week, Maserati Australia and New Zealand general manager Glen Sealey said it was an exciting time for the company as it embarked on a period of unprecedented growth in its almost 100-year history.

Calling the new Quattroporte the “absolute pinnacle” of the range, Mr Sealey said the Porsche Panamera rival would lay the foundation for expansion into more populous and competitive

segments with the Ghibli from February 2014, and – most importantly – the Levante in late 2014.

With SUV sales booming around the globe, it is the Levante that stands to account for the lion’s share of Maserati growth – much like the controversial Cayenne did for Porsche.

Quattroporte sales will commence in September this year with the 390kW/650Nm twin-turbo 3.8-litre V8, and

will be joined in November by the entry 301kW/550Nm 3.0-litre twin-turbo V6 version.

Mr Sealey said an as-yet unspecified diesel Quattroporte variant was also likely to appear in late 2014, at which time the company will shoot for 100 annual sales. The company sold 37 Quattroportes here in 2012 – more than in Italy, the UK and France.

Ateco targets Lotus sales boost with belated ExigeS launch, better supplies

Lotus ‘deserves more’

Exige S

By MIKE COSTELLOLOTUS Australia distributor Ateco Automotive says it remains “committed” to the brand Down Under, with plans to ramp up sales on the back of greater factory supply and the overdue launch of the supercharged Exige S coupe in March.

The British-based sportscar brand is recovering from a tumultuous period following last year’s takeover of parent company Proton by Malaysian conglomerate DRB-Hicom, and the subsequent dismissal of global CEO Dany Bahar.

Production of the Elise, Exige and Evora models was severely interrupted by the takeover, as DRB – well established as a component supplier to the likes of Volkswagen and Daimler – sought to put its stamp on manufacturing at the Lotus plant in Hethel, UK.

Australia was one of the only markets where Lotus experienced sales growth in 2012, with sales up 15 per cent. In fact, of the roughly 1000 units sold

worldwide last year, 69 came from Australia, a proportional figure Lotus Australia general manager Glen Sealey called “very very high”.

As a result, Mr Sealey told us in an exclusive interview last week that the local market had been particularly hard hit by supply shortages, with stock levels almost cleaned out. Indeed, he said the four units sold in January this year was “good” in the circumstances, until new supply of the entire range arrives in April.

Perversely, despite what looks like a small number of sales, Ateco could be perceived as a victim of its own success.

“It’s a good brand with fantastic heritage and it deserves more,” Mr Sealey said.

“But we will ramp it and we’ll use

the Exige S as the launch platform, the Elise S is a well-priced, well-positioned car and we will re-look at what we do with Evora. But compared globally we do well with Evora.

“On seeing what things were like in Hethel, DRB was surprised to say the least, and there was huge turmoil in terms of its relations with suppliers. It stopped production.

“Globally, it wasn’t a problem to stop production, because there was plenty of stock out there, but for us, it killed us because we’d been doing a good job and we ran out of stock. We’ve been out of stock for months – we’re hand to mouth.”

Ateco and Chrysler bossesset up private company tohandle NZ car distribution

Fiat Chrysler NZ forms

By RON HAMMERTON and JACQUI MADELIN

TWO major figures in the Australasian automotive industry have joined forces to handle the New Zealand distribution of Fiat Chrysler Group products, including Alfa Romeo, Dodge and Jeep.

Ateco Automotive executive chairman Neville Crichton and Fiat Chrysler Group Australia president and CEO Clyde Campbell have both personally taken a 50 per cent share in an all-new Auckland-based company, Fiat Chrysler NZ Limited, that will take over distribution of the Italian and American brands on May 1.

Neither Ateco nor Fiat Chrysler Group has any equity in the new entity that will assume NZ market responsibility for Fiat and Alfa Romeo rights from Ateco Automotive NZ and Chrysler Group rights from independent importer Sime Darby.

In return, Sime Darby will take Citroen distribution rights for NZ from

Ateco NZ, adding the French brand to its existing Peugeot franchise on both sides of the Tasman.

All these brands have been in limbo in NZ since last year when the factory- owned Chrysler Group Australia took over Australian distribution of Fiat and Alfa Romeo from Ateco Australia, and Sime Darby took on Citroen in Australia from Ateco in a swap for SsangYong.

Fiat Chrysler Group NZ public relations manager Edward Rowe said New Zealand-born Mr Crichton would bring a wealth of experience with Fiat and Alfa Romeo and the NZ automotive

market to the new operation, while Mr Campbell would bring the same from the Chrysler Group.

He said staffing arrangements were still to be sorted, but the head office would be in Auckland.

Mr Rowe stopped short of saying the new company would consider recruiting some staff from those who handled the Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands at Sime Darby but added: “Neville knows there are some very good people at Sime Darby.”

‘Business as usual’ asTrivett prepares to sellto Inchcape for $115m

Inchcape takes Trivett

By HAITHAM RAZAGUIAUSTRALIA’S largest prestige automotive group, Trivett, will be acquired by British-based global vehicle distributor and retailer Inchcape for £78 million ($A115m) on March 1.

Inchcape group chief executive Andre Lacroix described the transaction as “in line with our strategy of expansion in Asia-Pacific and emerging markets with luxury and premium brand partners”.

He said it was a “significant step in the development of our operations in Australasia”.

Inchcape’s Australian retail network comprises 17 dealerships and 21 service centres covering Isuzu Ute, Kia, Mitsubishi, Subaru and Volkswagen

across New South Wales, Queensland and Victoria.

Trivett has 22 mostly Sydney-based outlets with annual sales of around

9000 units. It represents some of the

world’s most desirable brands, including Aston Martin, Bentley, Lotus, McLaren and Rolls-Royce, premium marques BMW, Harley-Davidson, Jaguar, Land Rover and Volvo, and volume brands Honda, Kia,

Peugeot, Skoda and Volkswagen.Between its Australian retail network

and successful Subaru distributorship, Inchcape sells around 50,000 vehicles

per year and also runs the AutoNexus fleet services and logistics operation.

Trivett executive chairman Greg Duncan told GoAuto he expected Inchcape to follow a “business as usual approach” following the takeover.

“I think what you are going to find is that they are acquiring Trivett to maintain a growth of the Trivett brand and the Trivett people … because they are acquiring the business for what it is.”

Mr Duncan confirmed that he and his son Matthew, who is CEO, will stay at Trivett for a year under a consulting contract.

London calling

Aussie launch program for London Taxis is back on

By MIKE COSTELLOTHE new Proton Preve small sedan has scored a five-star ANCAP safety rating, marking the first time the Malaysian car-maker has achieved the maximum score.

The result realises company predictions that the car would achieve the maximum score following development testing.

As GoAuto reported exclusively last year, Proton used Sydney’s Crashlab facility – as used by ANCAP – to help improve its safety performance.

The company’s extra focus on safety has paid dividends, with its previous best result a mediocre three stars for its smaller S16 model, while the only other Proton tested – the now-discontinued Jumbuck ute – notoriously scored just one star when tested in 2009.

Preve will officially launch in March as the spearhead for the brand’s ambitious plan to almost quadruple sales this year. Of the 3500-4000 sales the company is targeting this year, Preve is expected to account for as much as 80 per cent of total volume.

By TIM NICHOLSONTHE London Taxi Company has confirmed it will bring its iconic ‘black cabs’ to the Australian market, after a false start due to its parent company falling into administration last year.

London Taxi Company (LTC) export logistics manager Nigel Walters exclusively confirmed to GoAuto that the company’s new board has “met and have decided to pursue the Australian market”.

Mr Walters said that LTC was “in final discussions with our preferred distributor”, indicating that an announcement about the company’s Australian operation was imminent.

News of a local berth for the London cabs comes after confirmation of the takeover of parent company Manganese Bronze Holdings (MBH) by Chinese

automotive giant Zhejiang Geely earlier this month.

Geely had been a shareholder in MBH since 2006 before paying £11.04 million ($A16.7m) to take over the business and save it from administration.

GoAuto reported exclusively in October that LTC was investigating the viability of an Australian operation before the plan was halted by MBH slipping into administration after failing to secure a cash injection from Geely.

The latest model TX4 taxis are built in both Britain and China, although it is not yet known where the Australia-bound vehicles will be sourced from.

Behind the retro design of the TX4 is a functional taxi that has high levels of accessibility for passengers.

Australian launch lockedin for reborn front-driveprestige mid-size model

Lexus ES to return

By RON HAMMERTONLEXUS Australia has announced the return to Australia of its mid-size front-wheel-drive ES, completing a clean sweep of its luxury sedan line-up in little more than 18 months.

The sixth-generation ES is due locally in the fourth quarter of this year, slotting between the all-new rear-drive IS – which is scheduled for showrooms in the third quarter – and the larger GS that made its Australian debut in April last year.

The Australian branch of Toyota’s prestige brand has had its hand up for the new ES since it was revealed at the New York motor show in April last year.

A decision by Toyota in Japan not to include the ES in its line-up threatened to skittle plans for a right-hand-drive version, but pressure from markets such as Australia and India convinced the

powers that be in Nagoya to go ahead with such a variant, albeit more than a year later than the left-hand-drive version.

Now built on a platform shared with the American-inspired Toyota Avalon, the new Japanese-built ES will set about distancing itself from the “Camry with a bow tie” stigma that curtailed sales of previous generations of the model that was discontinued in Australia seven years ago.

Like the new rear-drive GS and IS, the ES has been redeveloped under the gaze of Toyota Motor Corporation president Akio Toyoda with a view to shedding its perceived shortcomings while enhancing its strengths.

One of the strengths of the Commodore-sized ES has been its spaciousness, especially in the rear seat, and this has been taken to new levels on

the stretched Avalon platform, mainly because of the ES’s role in China, where many such cars are chauffeur-driven.

The latest ES gets about an extra 100mm of rear legroom in a body stretched by about 50mm over the previous generation that was not sold here.

The 2820mm wheelbase is 45mm longer than that of the Camry, but the 1820mm overall width is 5mm narrower.

The ES also gains a hybrid variant, powered by the same 2.5-litre Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder petrol engine/electric motor combination as the upcoming hybrid IS300h, but driving the front wheels through a planetary gear continuously variable transmission (CVT).

Mercedes shines in customer satisfaction awards

Playstation preview forMercedes CLA45 AMG

By HAITHAM RAZAGUIA GLIMPSE of the hot Mercedes-Benz CLA45 AMG four-door coupe has emerged in the virtual world as part of a computer game ahead of the real car’s world public debut at the New York motor show next month and Australian sale early next year.

Only a rear three-quarter shot from the game has been shown, but it is clear the CLA45 will be a mean-looking machine with huge dark-coloured alloy wheels, aggressive side skirts and a purposeful vented rear bumper with diffuser and large trapezoidal tailpipes.

Its design is not far off the CLA250 Sport already revealed and the rear-end treatment is much like that of the A45 AMG hatch.

The new Driveclub racing game, exclusive to the Sony Playstation 4, was launched in New York last week and also features the mechanically related A45 that will be officially unveiled on March 5 at the Geneva show.

Both CLA45 and A45 deploy AMG’s new hand-built 2.0-litre turbo engine, which develops 265kW of power at 6000rpm and 450Nm of torque between 2250 and 5000rpm, making it the world’s punchiest series-production four-pot.

By RON HAMMERTONMERCEDES-BENZ has been named Car Manufacturer of the Year in the 2012 Roy Morgan Customer Satisfaction Awards, pipping Subaru for the prize handed out in Melbourne last week.

The German company promptly declared its ambition to go back-to-back in the 2013 awards, despite an expected big influx of first-time Benz buyers attracted to the brand by the new entry- level A-Class hatch and CLA sedan.

In 2011, Mercedes was equal fourth with Subaru behind Lexus, Volvo and Honda in the awards which are based on the results of Roy Morgan Research ‘single source’ surveys of 50,000 ordinary Australians and 22,000 business decision-makers throughout the year.

Last year, Mercedes finished on top of monthly survey results five times in what Roy Morgan Research described

as a remarkably consistent performance that deviated only 1.4 per cent across the year.

Subaru came a close second, winning four of the monthly surveys, with Honda and Volvo winning one each.

Lexus found the going a little tougher in 2012, finishing second in January and fifth in February before dropping out of the top five.

Audi and Suzuki also figured in the top five in some months during 2012.

After receiving the winner’s plaque in Melbourne last week, Mercedes-Benz Australia/Pacific president and CEO Juergen Sauer said Mercedes-Benz received many awards, but the greatest award was finishing number one in customer feedback through independent surveys such as those done by Roy Morgan Research.

Jeep’s boldly styled newCherokee bobs up aheadof late-2013 launch here

Radical Cherokee move

By MIKE COSTELLOJEEP has revitalised its iconic Cherokee with a bold and polarising new-generation version revealed last weekend ahead of a world debut at the New York motor show in March.

The US off-road brand released a quartet of images on Sunday after a series of shots from the factory line in Toledo, Ohio, leaked onto the internet.

Featuring radical front-end styling – for a Jeep, at least – the latest version of the company’s mid-size SUV staple will hit Australian shores by the end of this year, when it will replace the current model already in run-out.

Already dividing opinions on social media and Jeep message boards across the globe, the new Cherokee cops a unique take on Jeep’s familiar seven-slot grille, which is affixed entirely to the bulging bonnet and bisected by a prominent horizontal crease.

The grille is flanked by a pair of headlight units, with slimline LED and indicator clusters on top and chunky rectangular main beams below, complemented by a large lower air vent and foglights.

The side profile is given new-found dynamism by a slowly raking window line and squared-off wheelarches.

While dimensions have not yet been provided, the new version appears to have a noticeably lower roofline than the tall and boxy previous model.

Jeep has not revealed mechanical details, but promises the new “no-compromise” model will offer “best-in-class capability”, “exemplary” on-road dynamics and fuel economy improvements of up to 45 per cent.

American reports suggest the new Cherokee could controversially lose the current rear-drive-oriented layout and move to a front-drive platform shared

with owner Fiat, but with an all-wheel-drive option to give it off-road credibility.

Cherokee’s prime powertrain is expected to be a new 3.2-litre version of Chrysler’s V6 Pentastar engine mated with a groundbreaking nine-speed automatic transmission.

A diesel is likely for export markets including Australia.

Interior images and tail shots of the vehicle have also been held back until the full reveal in the Big Apple.

The new model will also return the famous Cherokee badge to North America, with Jeep in the US having instead used the ‘Liberty’ moniker on the previous version.

Nissan confirms Nismo GT-R, range-wide sports line

By HAITHAM RAZAGUINISSAN has confirmed it will reveal an even hotter Nismo version of its flagship GT-R supercar within 12 months as part of a massive expansion of its in-house performance division.

Speaking at the opening of the new global Nismo headquarters in Yokohama yesterday, Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn announced plans for the rapid introduction of sporty Nismo-tweaked road cars – at the rate of at least one per year.

The GT-R will join Nismo versions of the Juke mini-SUV, which is already on sale in Europe and Japan, and the 370Z coupe that was unveiled at the Tokyo Auto Salon last month.

Mr Ghosn said that while the Nismo models will be developed at Yokohama, they will be built on the same

production line as standard variants and that Nismo will be integrated with the product development process for all new models.

The relationship will be similar to that of AMG and Mercedes-Benz, or M Division and BMW.

“Nismo will bring new excitement to the Nissan portfolio with a broader range of affordable and innovative performance models for more markets and more people,” he said.

“Whether it’s a small car or a sportscar, if it’s wearing the Nismo badge it offers something special; quality, functionality and efficiency, with Nismo’s distinctive styling, sporty handling and dynamic performance capabilities.”

Their home market might be struggling, but some of Europe’s biggest car-makers are preparing to launch game-changing new models at the Geneva motor show next week...

ALFA Romeo’s new 4C baby supercar will show off its carbon-fibre bones in a no-nonsense interior that is trimmed in other areas with black plastic designed to look like asphalt.

The cabin of the rear-drive sports coupe has been revealed in an image released by the Italian company ahead of next week’s unveiling of the Turin-built car at the Geneva motor show.

The polished carbon-fibre construction of the 4C’s hi-tech “central cell” can be seen along the side sills and central transmission tunnel, reinforcing the impression of hard-edged racing technology in the super-light coupe.

Alfa says this was deliberate “to enhance the sense of light weight, technology and uniqueness”.

The four-metre-long 4C is said to weigh less than 1000kg, potentially endowing it with sub-five-second 0-100km/h acceleration, propelled by a new 1.75-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine – which will belt out 176kW – and dual-clutch transmission.

The image shows paddle shifters on

the steering wheel, but no gear selector on the console, presumably because it uses button gear selection like other cars in the Fiat family, including the Fiat 500 and Ferraris.

Like the body, the frames for the sports seats are made of composite materials and cloaked in what appears to be black leather with red contrast stitching, with the Alfa logo stitched into the headrests.

The chunky flat-bottomed sports steering wheel is wrapped in leather, matching the leather-strap grabhandles on the doors.

Behind the rear doors, the Jet 2+2 has completely different sheetmetal for the transformation from coupe-styled sedan to elegant hatchback/wagon.

The glass of the rear doors appears to have been elongated and the C-pillars

reprofiled to meet the flatter rear glass, with a sculptured effect that accentuates muscular-looking haunches.

Bertone has taken the tail-lights from the new Vanquish and extended them across the bootlid with an LED strip, referencing the 2004 Vanquish-based Bertone Jet2 concept.

Finishing off the rear is a unique

vented bumper, while at the front is a gaping grille similar to that of the recently announced Rapide S, but flanked by additional air intakes.

Bertone badges adorn the front guards and a gloss-black feature plate on the C-pillar that elongates the window line.

As suggested by the name, inside is a 2+2 seating configuration with four individual buckets, the rear pair foldable, with an electric protective cover protecting them from loads and creating a flat floor to maximise versatility.

AUDI will preview a plug-in petrol-electric hybrid version of its brand-new A3 small hatchback at the Geneva show on March 5.

As with the German company’s previous electrified models, the plug-in A3 receives the ‘e-tron’ moniker.

It combines sharp acceleration – zero to 100km/h is dealt with in 7.6 seconds – with fuel consumption of just 1.5 litres per 100km (and CO2 emissions of 35 grams per kilometre).

The e-tron will form part of a green- vehicle assault from the Volkswagen Group at Geneva, with the company that owns Audi planning to show its own production XL1 EV and e-Golf concept.

The A3 joins the smaller A1 plug-in, now in its second iteration and undergoing German government-

funded trials. Production has not been confirmed, but Audi certainly sounds positive about the technology.

“The Audi A3 e-tron will provide a realistic glimpse into the future of mobility as Audi is planning it,” the company said in a statement. “The electrification of the drivetrain, above all using plug-in technology, plays a deciding role in the strategy of the brand.”

AUDI will transplant its potent five-cylinder performance engine from the TT RS sports coupe into its Q3 to not only create its first RS-rated SUV but also its most affordable model wearing the fabled RS badge.

Audi Australia has promised the all-wheel-drive RS Q3 will be priced under $100,000 when it arrives in Australia in the first quarter of 2014.

Currently, the new $139,900 TT RS Plus is the cheapest RennSport-enhanced Audi in Australia. Others include the just-released $149,400 RS4

Avant and $161,900 RS5 coupe. The bad news is that the new Q3

flagship will not share the same blistering speed and grunt as its RS stablemates, getting a detuned 228kW/420Nm version of Audi’s

2.5-litre turbocharged direct-injection petrol engine – 37kW and 40Nm shy of the 265kW/465Nm variants powering the TT RS Plus.

The bulky 1730kg RS Q3, which will make its debut at next week’s Geneva motor show, will naturally also be slower in the 0-100km/h sprint than the TT RS, clocking 5.5 seconds compared with the TT flagship’s supercar-like 4.1 seconds.

BENTLEY has endowed the new, more stately-looking Flying Spur limousine with as much power and torque as its fastest mainstream model, the two-door Continental GT Speed.

With 459kW and 800Nm, the Flying Spur to be officially unveiled at Geneva is the most powerful four-door Bentley in history, able to reach triple-digit speeds in 4.3 seconds and carry on to 322km/h.

Mass has been reduced by 50kg –

despite the addition of extra onboard technology – and combined with the more potent turbocharged W12 engine (up 47kW and 150Nm), the new Flying Spur’s power-to-weight ratio has

improved by 14 per cent.As predicted from the teaser campaign

that began earlier this month, the Flying Spur has taken on a more stately look that gives it the appearance of a little brother to the Mulsanne flagship rather than the slab-sided, stretched Continental that was the original.

McLAREN claims its P1 hypercar’s plug-in hybrid powertrain will produce a mammoth 673kW of power and 900Nm of torque but consume about as much fuel as a base Mazda3.

The British marque released yet another round of details on its eagerly anticipated new flagship last week,

ahead of the car’s full reveal in production form at the Geneva motor show on March 5.

As reported, the company has already shown full exterior and interior images.

The huge power figures come from the combined might of a 542kW/720Nm 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8 petrol engine with a 131kW/260Nm electric motor mounted directly onto it, channelled to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The motor draws power from a lithium battery that weighs just 96kg, mounted in the lightweight, high-strength carbon-fibre MonoCage chassis. The

pack features super-efficient cells and a complex temperature control system with minutely balanced flow of coolant.

A plug-in charger can be stored onboard in the luggage compartment, or to save weight it can be moved to the garage (or the pits), and can fully charge the battery in around two hours.

McLaren claims the plug-in drivetrain will emit fewer than 200 grams of CO2 per kilometre, which equates to fuel consumption of around 8.5 litres per 100km.

PEUGEOT has teamed up with French oil and gas multinational Total to engineer the 208 Hybrid FE concept that will be revealed at the Geneva motor show next week.

The Hybrid FE, which stands for ‘fun’ and ‘efficiency’, is a redesigned version of the 208 hatch that will be more aerodynamic than its donor car, with a lower coefficient of drag for improved fuel efficiency.

While no images have been released,

it is expected to have a lower stance and feature slightly different styling cues to the 208 that was released in Australia last September, but the French car-maker said the car will

retain the same occupant space.Power will come from an “extensively

evolved” version of Peugeot’s 1.0-litre three-cylinder unit – the most fuel-efficient engine in the 208 range – although it is not available in Australia.

Currently the most economical engine available in the local 208 line-up is the 60kW 1.2-litre three-cylinder petrol Active. - TIM NICHOLSON

SKODA will go gunning for family and corporate load luggers alike with its longer, wider and vastly more spacious third-generation Octavia wagon that will

debut at the Geneva motor show next week ahead of its Australian showroom rollout alongside the all-new liftback version in the fourth quarter of this year.

The Czech-made front-drive mid-sized wagon – which is 90mm longer and 45mm wider than the current model – can gobble a class-leading 610 litres of luggage with the rear seat up and 1740 litres with the seat folded flat.

As well, the front passenger seat can be folded to accommodate long loads, making the Octavia one of the most flexible mid-size wagons around.

Even passengers get more room, with 73mm of knee room for back-seat passengers – the most in its segment, Skoda says. - RON HAMMERTON

THE faster yet more frugal new-generation Volkswagen Golf GTD was officially revealed last week ahead of its public world debut at the Geneva motor show on March 5.

The GTD will be among a cavalcade of new Golf variants to premiere in

Geneva, alongside the new GTI, R, R cabrio, wagon and pure-electric e-Golf.

Pitched as more of a sporty long-distance tourer than outright hot hatch, the diesel-powered Mk7 uses Volkswagen’s new 2.0-litre engine to sprint from zero to 100km/h in a sprightly 7.5 seconds, but uses as little as 4.2 litres of fuel per 100km.

The new unit produces 135kW of power and 380Nm of torque from 1750rpm, an increase of 10kW and 30Nm over the previous GTD that continues to sell in small numbers in Australia.

The new GTD is subsequently six tenths faster to the 100km/h mark than its predecessor while being around 20 per cent more fuel efficient. Indeed, the Mk7 uses just 0.3L/100km more than a Toyota Prius hybrid.

Power is sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox or a six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic. This latter transmission pushes fuel consumption out to 4.7 litres per 100km.

VOLKSWAGEN has confirmed production of its super-efficient XL1 plug-in hybrid, which weighs just 795kg, sips 0.9 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres and emits a paltry 21 grams of CO2 per kilometre – record figures for a production car.

Whether this revolutionary car will reach Australia following its world debut at the Geneva motor show next week is unclear, as Volkswagen Group Australia communications general manager Karl Gehling told GoAuto

must “wait and see”, but conceded that the company would “look at it”.

The sleek, low-slung two-seater also sets a production-car record for its low coefficient of drag, rated at just 0.189Cd, meaning it uses just 6.2kW to travel at 100km/h – and it can drive for

up to 50km on electricity alone.Propulsion comes from a 35kW

800cc two-cylinder turbo-diesel engine combined with a 20kW electric motor powered by a lithium-ion battery, all driving through a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Volkswagen claims the XL1 can hit 160km/h and accelerate from standstill to 100km/h in 12.7 seconds.

A MASSIVE model upgrade across Volvo’s passenger-car range will arrive in Australia by the end of the year, with facelifts for six vehicles including the popular XC60 SUV and S60 sedan.

Volvo Car Group senior vice-president of product strategy and vehicle line management Lex Kerssemakers said this update to the range was “the most extensive development of existing models in our company’s history”.

The Swedish car-maker’s “60 cluster” that includes the S60 sedan, V60 wagon and XC60 SUV have all been given a makeover that includes a redesigned front end.

Volvo has dropped the quirky split headlamps of the current S60 sedan and V60 wagon twins and replaced them with a single, cleaner headlamp design.

Volvo, Geely to developnew compact car platform

By HAITHAM RAZAGUISWEDISH premium car brand Volvo and its Chinese majority shareholder Geely Holding will develop a new modular platform for compact cars at a new research and development centre to be established in Gothenburg.

The new architecture will be shared between both companies, making the most of Volvo’s technology leadership within the Geely empire.

To this end, Volvo Cars vice-president of product strategy Mats Fagerhag will run the new R&D centre, which will employ around 200 full-time engineers from Sweden and China and will be fully operational by the end of this year.

Volvo says the modular architecture and component set will deliver “world-class product technologies and attributes” while cutting development, testing and sourcing costs and delivering “significant” economies of scale.

Mr Fagerhag, along with senior executives including Geely Holding chief advisor and Volvo Cars board member Carl-Peter Forster, will ensure the new platform and associated components will “meet the individual brands’ specific requirements for different cost and attribute levels”.

V40 crossfire

By HAITHAM RAZAGUITHE Volvo V40 Cross Country – a high-riding, ruggedised crossover version of the V40 small hatch that launched in Australia last week – has been confirmed for Australian launch and is expected to arrive in the third quarter of this year.

Volvo Cars Australia (VCA) managing director Matt Braid told GoAuto he expected the V40 Cross Country to be priced at a premium over the V40 hatch, which starts from $34,990 plus on-road costs, citing the BMW X1 (from $46,900) as a key competitor in price and execution.

Front-drive and all-wheel-drive variants are promised but whether the Cross Country will reflect the standard V40 variant mix is still undecided, and VCA is still awaiting confirmation of which driveline combinations will be available to this market.

Mr Braid anticipated a small number of V40 Cross Country variants as it is a niche model and enters a “bit of an

unknown segment” for VCA.But he agreed that the car could become

a surprise hit, given the success of the conceptually similar but less premium Subaru XV that is priced from $28,490.

He said the Cross Country’s price premium over the V40 would depend on the additional specification and hardware fitted to give the Cross Country a bit more off-road ability than the low-slung hatch.

Revealed at the Paris motor show last September, the V40 Cross Country has a ride height pumped up by 40mm over the standard hatch and typical crossover styling cues like black lower body cladding and silver scuff plates.

Volvo expects to sell 17,000 V40 Cross Countrys worldwide per year, with half going to Europe and 30 per cent going to China.

Globally, the V40 Cross Country is available with the same driveline and specification mix as the V40.

Australia set to become first market for new line of Hyundai halo models

By MIKE COSTELLOPERFORMANCE-ORIENTED SR versions of the Hyundai i30 and Accent hatchbacks are edging closer to a local launch, with the company’s Australian arm pushing the case strongly to get the two prospective halo cars out of development and into production.

Australia is shaping up to be the first market in the world to receive each vehicle – provided Hyundai Motor Corporation gives each the green light – with the Aussie market acting as a test bed ahead of a wider global rollout.

While not confirmed, GoAuto understands a launch as early as the third quarter of 2013 could be on the cards, almost 12 months after their premiere at the Australian International Motor Show in Sydney last October.

Hyundai has made no secret of

its ambitions to branch out into the performance-car market, which it sees as crucial to the continued improvement of its brand reputation.

While not outright high-performance vehicles, these warmed-up versions of its small hatchbacks would give the company a rival to the likes of the Mazda3 SP25.

Each car would be a development of the concepts shown in Sydney, with the same mechanicals but potentially some changes to specification and body additions.

As previously reported, Hyundai Motor Co Australia’s product planning division has played a substantial role in the creation of each model, selecting components from throughout the Korean auto giant and combining them into two unique prototype vehicles.

HMCA product planning manager Scott Nargar told GoAuto last week this

is largely down to Australia’s seemingly insatiable appetite for performance variants of mainstream cars.

For instance, both the SP25 and the Volkswagen Golf GTI make up a far greater proportion of sales in their respective ranges than in other global markets.

“If we don’t have a car in that segment, we’re basically losing customers,” he said. “They haven’t got a Hyundai to choose from so they’ll walk to one of our competitors, so we need to have the right sort of vehicle.”

The i30 SR show car was powered by the i40’s 2.0-litre GDi petrol engine delivering 130kW and 213Nm – a considerable improvement on the regular hatch’s 110kW/178Nm 1.8-litre engine – and driving the front wheels through a six-speed manual gearbox.

GM debuts next-gen diesel in Opel Zafira

By RON HAMMERTONOPEL’S Australian customers will have to wait until at least next year for the first signs of the European company’s new clean but powerful 1.6-litre CDTi Ecotec diesel that has just been launched in the Zafira Tourer people-mover on its home market.

The Euro 6 engine, packing 100kW of power, 320Nm of torque and 4.1 litres per 100km fuel economy, is destined to replace all current, dated 1.7-litre Opel diesels in Europe, plus some of the more basic 2.0-litre diesels over the next year or two.

The engine is also likely to turn up in other products produced by Opel’s parent company, General Motors, meaning we might see the unit in Australian Holden cars at some point.

Opel Australia head of marketing and public relations Michelle Lang told GoAuto that the local branch had no plans for the engine in the foreseeable future.

“It is not in our current planning,” she said. “We have our hands full grappling with the current range.”

This appears to rule out the upcoming Opel Mokka compact SUV for the engine’s debut in Australia, at least at launch.

‘We need that car’

Opel Australia hot to trot for all-new Mokka SUV

By BYRON MATHIOUDAKISOPEL is still confident of releasing its long-awaited Mokka in Australia by the end of this year, but only if there is enough allocation to satisfy stronger-than-expected global demand.

With 80,000 orders already taken even before its launch at next week’s Geneva motor show, Opel Australia managing director Bill Mott declined to announce a local on-sale date.

However, he did reveal that the Mokka’s business case has been completed and that its fate now rests on availability for Australia.

“Ideally, if we were to get it, we would launch it to coincide with the (next) Aussie summer… but we will take it when we can get it,” he told GoAuto at this month’s launch of Opel’s OPC performance brand in Australia.

“I just can’t confirm it because I don’t know yet exactly when I can get it.

“We need that car, I am very keen,

and I’ve already raised my hand. “Mokka’s been a huge success already

in Europe. They’ve got 80,000 orders. My concern is that, as much as I am happy for the success that car is having in Europe, it comes down to allocation and when we can get that vehicle. So I’d hate to say it (but) I am almost wishing my colleagues in Europe limited volume.

“We do have a business case put together for that car. The things that have to happen ... they have already been done. I am optimistic that we will get an approval – but I don’t have it yet.”

Opel is working full steam ahead with the South Korean manufacturing site in Bupyeong to ensure there is enough stock for the various General Motors brands (Opel, Chevrolet, Buick and Holden) to access.

“There are still a few more hurdles that we have to jump,” Mr Mott added.

Panda, Grande Punto andFreemont to lead productwave for Fiat in Australia

Fiat fights back

By TIM NICHOLSONFIAT’S Panda city car and Punto light hatchback will headline the Italian brand’s product onslaught in Australia, with at least 11 new models or variants being prepared for launch over the next two years.

The quirky Panda has been rumoured to be a starter in Australia for some time, but an agreement with former distributor Ateco prevented Fiat Chrysler from announcing any future product strategies or pricing realignment until February this year.

Fiat’s announcement of the future direction of the brand and restructured pricing comes after months of planning after the change in distributorship from Ateco to a factory-backed operation in May last year.

Fiat Chrysler product strategy director Alex Tam said that the brand expansion and price cuts will provide potential buyers with the opportunity to get into an Italian brand for the first time.

He said his company wanted to

make Italian cars more accessible and desirable.

The first cab off the rank for 2013 will be the Dodge Journey-based Fiat Freemont in April.

While the Journey is marketed as a people-mover, the Fiat Freemont will be sold as a crossover SUV to ensure it appeals to a wider group of consumers.

Pricing is yet to be revealed for the Freemont, but Mr Tam said he was enthusiastic about its future in Australia.

“It will be, and I can assure you, the best-value D-sized crossover the market could offer,” he said.

GoAuto has previously reported that the Freemont would arrive with a number of specifications in both front- and all-wheel drive with a starting price below $30,000.

The expansion of the Fiat brand also marks the return of the Punto to the Australian market after it was discontinued under Ateco’s stewardship in May 2010.

Now to be called the Grande Punto, it is expected to compete at the lower

end of the light-car market. Australian dealers will receive a facelifted version of the current-generation Punto that was released in 2005.

Mr Tam said he was not concerned about bringing a car of that age back to the market.

“The slice of the market is so big,” he said. “There is always someone out there who wants something different to the usual Japanese and Korean product. We are going to offer a product that plays to our strengths.

“The customer will decide whether they see this car as good value and I have to say, most consumers won’t even know whether this is an old car or a new car … most consumers will just look at it and go ‘wow, there is something new in the marketplace’. We should do well with this car.

“I believe it’s going to be the most affordable, best-value light car that you can find in the marketplace.”

Range Rover to offer supercharged petrol V6 here

By MIKE COSTELLOTHE latest-generation Range Rover will be available in Australia with a new six-cylinder petrol engine option from the fourth quarter of 2013.

The 3.0-litre supercharged V6, currently used in the Jaguar XJ limousine, will make its way under the Range Rover’s clamshell bonnet as the new entry petrol engine, joining the line-up alongside the existing V6 and V8 diesels and the flagship supercharged V8 petrol.

It will not undercut the entry TDV6 diesel on price, however, as Land Rover Australia spokesman James Scrimshaw

confirmed to GoAuto that it will instead slot into the range between the $178,900 TDV6 Vogue and $195,100 TDV8 Vogue.

Official pricing will be confirmed closer to launch toward the end of this year.

The direct-injection downsized engine may have two fewer cylinders than the previous model’s base V8 naturally aspirated petrol, but it is no slouch. JLR claims figures of 250kW at 6500rpm and 450Nm of torque between 3500 and 5000rpm – the same as the XJ.

By TIM NICHOLSONNEW Fiat and Alfa Romeo importer Fiat Chrysler Group Australia plans to quadruple sales of the Italian brands and sell a minimum of 10,000 units a year in Australia.

Fiat and Alfa Romeo averaged only about 2500 sales a year combined in recent years, mostly under previous importer Ateco Automotive, which relinquished the franchises in the middle of last year.

Speaking at the announcement of the group’s brand realignment and pricing restructure recently, Fiat Chrysler Group Australia president and CEO Clyde Campbell said the 10,000 sales will be made up of about 2000 for the Fiat Professional commercial division, 3000-3500 for Alfa Romeo and the remaining 4500-5000 for Fiat passenger cars.

“We think that in a full year of full supply with a fully functioning network, that’s the minimum number,” said Mr Campbell.

There are currently 46 Fiat and Alfa Romeo dealers in Australia, but Mr Campbell said he hoped this would grow to between 65 to 70 dealerships as the model ranges expand.

“I personally think it is very hard to go significantly beyond 10,000 sales with a network of 46 dealers,” he said. “You actually get hamstrung by the size of your network.”

All existing Fiat and Alfa Romeo dealers are multi-franchised, with no standalone dealers remaining in Australia.

Mr Campbell said 42 of the 46 dealers are multi-franchised with other non-Fiat-Chrysler brands.

“What is traditionally seen as a liability or a disadvantage, we have actually turned into an advantage. We are really comfortable operating in that multi-franchise environment, because it keeps us honest,” he said.

“We know that to get the attention we have got to make more money for the dealers than their other brands. If we don’t, they will switch their focus to them.”

A multi-million-dollar marketing campaign is underway with new locally

produced television commercials for both Fiat and Alfa Romeo already on air that aim to capture Australia’s connection to Italy.

Mr Campbell said that despite announcing major price reductions across the range, the company will not advertise pricing, preferring the commercials to engage potential buyers to connect with the brand in the digital space.

Sponsorship will continue to be a key element of the company’s marketing activities.

Fiat and Alfa Romeo sponsor the St George Illawarra NRL team and the Group has a multi-brand deal with Channel 10 to sponsor cooking reality show Masterchef.

By JOHN MELLORPETROL engines are going to get smaller over the next five years and borrow heavily from diesel engine technology, to the point where they may become as efficient as diesels but cheaper and cleaner, according to international expert Anup Bandivadekar.

Dr Bandivadekar is the passenger vehicles program director of the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), an advisory body set up as a research resource for regulators worldwide developing environmental policy on transport fuel use and emissions.

He was commenting on the relatively recent surge by car-makers globally to launch vehicles with dramatic reductions in CO2 emissions and fuel consumption which are starting to show overall energy and pollution improvements in vehicle fleets in key western markets.

Dr Bandivadekar will be a keynote speaker at the forthcoming Cars of Tomorrow conference to be held in Melbourne on March 14 as part of the Victorian government’s Automotive Week.

In an exclusive interview with GoAuto, he said the rush of improvement has resulted from a change of focus by car-makers from improving performance to improving

drivetrain efficiency.“Newer tools in design are enabling

these technologies to come to market faster, but what has really changed dramatically is how these technologies are getting deployed,” he said.

“In the decades of the 1980s and 1990s, even though technology was advancing at a steady pace, most of the technology improvements, with a few exceptions, went to improving vehicle performance – speed, horsepower, creature comfort levels, additional electronics and gadgetry and

zoom-zoom type of performance aspects.

“This past decade has shifted in favour of using technology improvements for reducing fuel consumption.”

He said this reflects increasing fuel prices around the world and renewed interest in regulation of fuel efficiency and emissions, especially in the United States, Japan and Europe, and that the pace of change has “surprised us”.

“In the US, for example, the

deployment of turbochargers and six-speed transmissions has gone up at a faster rate than we expected,” he said. “Ford, for example, has used the EcoBoost V6 engine as an alternative to the V8 in the F150, which is the workers’ truck and the largest-selling light vehicle in the US.

“This is a segment that is very conscious of what they buy and are proud of what they buy. Ford expected some sort of penetration, but now it is approaching the high 40s (per cent share). That is pretty astounding.”

Dr Bandivadekar said the largest improvements in vehicle engines in the next few years would come from smaller gasoline engines using diesel engine technology – turbocharging, direct injection, exhaust gas recirculation and intercoolers – without the particulate issues of diesels.

“This will bring gasoline engines within earshot of diesel efficiency at a lower cost overall and with less emission challenges than diesels,” he said.

SALES SPECIALIST NAMED AS INCOMING HEAD OF HONDA AUSTRALIABy RON HAMMERTON

HONDA has appointed a sales executive to head up its Australian outpost for the next three years as the company’s selling efforts move into top gear with the arrival of key new models.

Japanese-based Noriyuki Takakura, 44, replaces Satoshi Matsuzawa who is headed back to Japan to become managing director of the company’s charitable arm, The Honda Foundation.

Mr Takakura, who has been with Honda only 11 years and appears to be on his first overseas posting for the company, will receive the baton from Mr Matsuzawa on April 1 in the regular three-year change at the top of Honda’s Australian car import and sales operations based at Tullamarine in Melbourne.

A graduate of Kyoto University, Mr

Takakura is currently sales operations senior manager for Honda in Hokkaido, Japan’s large northern island, having worked previously in planning roles in regional sales and marketing since joining Honda in 2002.

While Mr Matsuzawa spent time in the United States at Honda’s North Carolina operations before being assigned to the Australian helm, Mr Takakura’s CV appears to show that Australia will be his first venture outside Japan.

Mr Takakura will be guided locally by sales and marketing director Stephen Collins, who has been the most senior Australian at Honda Australia since Lindsay Smalley stepped down as senior director in 2011 and then

retired in December. The new boss will arrive in

Australia to find Honda in a state of relative serenity compared with the past three years, during which Mr Matsuzawa was forced to deal with massive supply disruptions due to natural disasters in Japan and Thailand, and an ageing product line-

up due to product development delays caused by the global financial crisis.

With a new Civic and CR-V in play and an all-new Accord in the pipeline for launch this year, Honda Australia is hoping to claw back sales lost since its peak of 60,529 in 2007.

Last year, Honda’s sales improved 14.5 per cent, to 32,193 vehicles.

Honda is this week launching its first new model for the year, the Jazz Hybrid.

KEY EDITORIAL CHANGES TO THE GOAUTO NEWSROOMBy JOHN MELLOR

GOAUTOMEDIA has made a number of significant changes to its newsroom personnel following the departure later this week of managing editor Ron Hammerton.

The new managing editor is Mike Costello, who is presently a senior writer at GoAuto.

Mr Costello, who holds an honours degree in communications, joined GoAuto two years ago.

He will continue as a key writer as well as manage the newsroom roster and assignments. He will be responsible for the content in GoAuto’s consumer website, GoAuto.com.au which is currently attracting between 320,000 to 340,000 unique visitors a month.

Mr Costello will work closely with

Terry Martin who remains editor of GoAuto’s weekly industry newsletter, GoAutoNews.

Mr Costello will be joined by a new senior writer, Barry Park, a 20-year motoring veteran who from 2005 until late last year was a key member of the motoring team at The Age newspaper and Drive website.

GoAuto senior writer Haitham Razagui has elected to pursue his previous career as a technical writer specialising in the preparation of automotive technical presentations and press kits (Mobile: 0424 613 708).

Mr Razagui will remain associated

with GoAuto on an ongoing assignment basis.

Production assistant Tim Nicholson, who recently achieved his Master of Media and Communications, will now assume the role of a full-time journalist in the newsroom, while the role of production assistant goes to newly appointed staff member Daniel Gardner.

The remaining editorial team includes John Mellor, Byron Mathioudakis and Ian Porter.

Nicholson, Costello, Mathioudakis and Gardner are also presenters on a weekly motoring show on the community FM radio station Joy 94.9.

The smooth new Nissan Patrol – the first since 1997 – is the polar opposite of its utilitarian predecessor (which remains on sale). It’s larger and more luxurious, but the lack of a diesel option will repel some buyers. A 298kW/560Nm petrol V8 is the sole powertrain option.

Holden VF series drip-feed campaign continues with first look at ute and wagonBy RON HAMMERTON

THE drip-feed of Holden VF Commodore models continues with the release last week of images of the new Holden Ute and Sportwagon, showing new front treatments but only minor changes to the rear.

The Ute has been shown in SS V guise, with the same black twin grille nose as the sedan, while the Sportwagon is the Calais V version that again mimics the flagship sedan shown earlier this month.

But as expected, the two alternatives to the sedan fundamentally get only the VF’s new nose – including the aluminium bonnet and new front lights.

The sheetmetal around the back of the vehicles appears to be carryover from the superseded VE, on which all VFs are based.

No interior shots have been presented, but expect the two vehicles to get the all-new dashboard and seats of the VF sedan, along with the hi-

tech electronic safety devices such as collision warning and lane departure warning.

Holden says the Sportwagon and Ute will be launched mid-year, at the same time as the sedan range. Neither vehicle has been slated for export to North America as part of the Chevrolet SS range, but that might change with the Sportwagon.

Next cab off the protracted Holden VF launch rank is expected to be the base model, which will probably carry the Omega name but move upmarket to absorb the Berlina into one vehicle.

Holden has also announced it is doing more than 1.4 million kilometres

of local and overseas validation testing before the first VF Commodore reaches Holden showrooms in June.

“This includes 350,000km of customer verification testing of early production models by Holden employees across the business over the coming months,” it said.

Holden said it had mined customer feedback dating back to 2003 to help guide its test strategy.

Holden chief engineer Brett Vivian said Holden had put VF through its paces around the globe – from Sweden to North America to the Middle East.
