St. Maximilian’s Choices

Saint Maximilian Kolbe died in 1945 taking the place of another prisoner in Auschwitz, but his

martyrdom started many years before. As a young boy, he was quite a handful—so much so that at one point his mother cried out, “What will become of you?” Shaken by his mother’s grief, Maximilian went to the town church to ask our Lady what would become of him. He wrote that the Virgin Mother appeared to him holding two crowns: one white and one red. The white crown meant he would remain pure, and the red meant he would be a martyr. Our Lady asked Maximilian which one he would like. He chose them both.

We are offered choices as well. Sirach says that whatever we choose will be given to us, but what Jesus offers is challenging. Jesus offers each of us a new heart, a new spirit, a new love, and a new trust. Jesus defines what it means to be his follower, and it is a challenging task. This standard is not lowered for Christians, nor is it defined by what is legal in a country or popular in a social group. In fact, we are not only asked to live this life but we are called to teach it to others.

The rewards, however, are equal to the challenge. What Christ promises to those who love and teach his gospel is a glory and reward greater than any we have ever seen, heard, or imagined. Maximilian Kolbe knew this, and he fought earnestly for the truth in Nazi Germany, even though it led to his arrest and death.

For ReflectionWhat choices did Jesus place before me this week? How have I been an example of Christ to others this week?

A Word From Pope Francis“The word of God constantly shows us how God challenges those who believe in him....Each Christian and every community must discern the path that the Lord points out, but all of us are asked to obey his call to go forth from our own comfort zone in order to reach all the ‘peripheries’ in need of the light of the Gospel.”

Does suffering please God? I’ve heard we should “offer it up,” but to me, God is never pleased with pain.

Some think God sends suffering into our lives as retribution. In fact, God asks certain things—difficult things—of us so we can avoid suffering in

our own lives, in the lives of others, and after death. When a mother says, “Don’t touch that! It’s hot,” and her child touches

it anyway, the mother didn’t cause the burn. She knows the consequences of that action and warns her children not to do it. If they disregard her, she doesn’t stop loving them. In the same way, God tells us how to live so we can avoid being hurt, and God never stops loving us.

Some suffering is unavoidable no matter how well we love and obey God. This suffering is the hardest to accept. Some is the result of our humanity.

Many seek to assign blame; others want to know why things happen. The truth is, sometimes there is no why, no clear purpose. When there is, we don’t feel it any less. We can only trust that God will turn it into something good.

God’s power turned a “meaningless” crucifixion into the means of our salvation. This is what “offer it up” means: By turning toward and imitating Christ, we find new depths of faith and hope.

On the Road to Sainthood: Leaders of African Descent

Mother Mary Elizabeth Lange (1784-1882). . .   Mother Mary Lange was the foundress and first Superior General of the Oblate Sisters of Providence (1829-1832), the first congregation of African American women religious in the history of the Catholic Church. On July 2, 1829, Elizabeth and three other women professed their vows and became the Oblate Sisters of Providence. This congregation would educate and evangelize African Americans. She was born Elizabeth Lange, a native of the Caribbean, believed to be Cuban born of Haitian descent. By 1813 Providence directed her to Baltimore, Maryland where a large community of French speaking Catholics from Haiti was established.

Venerable Henriette Delille (1813-1862). . . Henriette Delille was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she lived all of her life. She was determined to help those in need for the love of Jesus and for the sake of the Gospel. It was in this manner that she dealt with her troubles and major obstacles to achieve her goals. Some of the troubles Henriette met were the resistance of the ruling population to the idea of a black religious congregation; the lack of finances to do the work; the taunts and disbelief of people in her mission; the lack of support from both the Church and civil authority; and poor health. In 1842, she founded the Congregation of the Sisters of the Holy Family.
