TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

In the last century, a few new feasts were blended into

the Church year, including today’s. After World War I, the

chaos of daily life in Europe made its impact felt on the

family structure. Partly to offer Christians an image of

hope and holiness in married family life, and also to pro-

mote the welfare of children, today’s feast was “invented”

in 1921. In 1969, it became a feast of Christmas.

The prayers today remind us not only of family life,

but of life in the community of faith. We ponder the mys-

tery of a God who loves us dearly enough to embrace the

struggles, joys, and daily sorrows of family life. The mes-

sage of Christmas shines through: God-with-us is available

to us in the ordinary patterns of our lives and commit-

ments. The lives of people who raise their children in diffi-

cult circumstances, and of people who remain faithful to

life in the Church in spite of some of their own family

struggles, occupy a special place in our hearts today in

prayer.

My Beloved Brothers and Sisters,

BLESSING & DEDICATION OF ARTWORK ON FEAST OF EPIPHANY Our parishioner, artist Catherine Whiteswan, has completed a beautiful painting of Jesus and the Sa-

maritan Woman at the Well. The painting will be blessed and dedicated on Sunday, January 4, 2015, at

the 8:30 a.m. Mass, the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord. It will be placed permanently in the Recon-

ciliation Room. The story of the Samaritan Woman is a story of a great awakening and manifestation

of Jesus to the woman and to all mankind. The Epiphany is a day of manifesting/showing forth Christ

to the world. We welcome this special work of art which will be an inspiration and work of evangeliza-

tion for all in our parish.

WORLD YOUTH DAY - POLAND 2016 World Youth Day will take place in Krakow, Poland in July 2016 with Pope Francis and youth from all

over the world. For the first time since it began, All Saints will be sending four young adults to repre-

sent our parish at this extraordinary event of faith. World Youth Day began with St. John Paul II as an

expression of his love and his confidence in the faith of Catholic youth in the Church. The last World

Youth Day was held in Rio de Janiero, Brazil in July, 2013 with an estimated 3 million youth attending the closing Mass with Pope

Francis. On that occasion he said to them:

"You too, dear young people, can be joyful witnesses of his love, courageous witnesses of his Gospel,

carrying to this world a ray of his light.”

Pope Francis at World Youth Day, July 25, 2013

During this blessed and holy season, the staff, our deacons and I wish all of you a happy and joyful Christmas celebration. May it

bring peace and renewed hope into your lives and the lives of your loved ones.

Merry Christmas,

Msgr. Adam

Formation Classes for children and youth resume on January 6 in the public schools and January 11 on the church campus. Re-

new your life and your children’s in Christ during this holy season and through our many formation programs.

Religious Formation registration remains open all year. Give your child or the child of someone you know the gift that lasts for

eternity – a formation in our Christian faith. Forms can be found in the foyer of the church or you may register electronically on the

parish website. Also, we take registration at class times on Sundays and Wednesdays as well as at the following public schools –

Harvard, Love, Sinclair and Travis elementary, Hamilton and Hogg MS. and Reagan HS. We are a parish that PRACTICES reach-

ing out to share the faith with all.

A Spiritual Book Study/discussion program on the books distributed on November 21/22 will begin with The Real Story by Ed-

ward Sri and Curtis Martin. This book presents the connection of the great prophets of the Old Testament from Genesis thru Jesus

to for our church today. It will begin January 26. Details will appear in the January 11 bulletin.

Adult Confirmation Program is taking enrollment starting in January. Please contact Ed. Colbert (English) – edcol-

[email protected] or John Guzman (Spanish) [email protected] or Dan at the parish office to sign up. In English and

Spanish. It will begin in February with confirmation in May.

Volunteer efforts in our formation programs. Volunteer efforts by several dozen parishioners make this possible. Some serve as

teachers and aides, others on committees such as Adult Ed, with the youth and children for events, and in the office to prepare mate-

rials. We will begin our first confession and communion program in March through the end of June for which we will need another

10 or 12 volunteers. If you are seeking ways to help get the message of Christ out, you convert yourself from a disciple (learner) to

an apostle (a doer who goes out to others). Call Dan or Adriana at the office or email us if you wish to get moving in the New

Year.

2014 YEAR-END

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS

2014 CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS

(January 1, 2014—December 31, 2014)

will be mailed in January, 2015.

If you have moved during the year, please contact the Parish

Business Office at 713-864-2653 to make sure that we have

your new address on file.

WE ARE GOD’S HOLY FAMILY The scriptures of Israel are filled with many stories of barren

couples who were miraculously granted the gift of children by

God. Surely the best known among these is the first reading from

today, from which Luke took inspiration when he recounted the

miraculous birth of John the Baptist to Zechariah and Elizabeth,

and the more miraculous birth of Jesus to Mary and Joseph.

In each instance, we are given examples or role models of

those who trusted in God. More than examples of those who

trust, they are models of self-surrender. They abandoned their

own presuppositions and prejudices about the workings of the

world and turned their lives over to belief in a God who can make

life grow where none ought to; a God who can turn death around

into a new and unimagined life; a God who can, today, take a tiny

child of humble parents in an insignificant town and make him

into a light for all the world .

This is what we, as God’s holy family, are called to do each

day: to trust not in ourselves and the way we think things should

be, but to open ourselves and surrender ourselves in faith to a God

of endless promise.
