How is O2 Saturation Measured?

Pulse oximeters get their

reading by measuring the

change of the color of the

blood.

Bright red blood indicates a healthy, oxygenated blood

(arterial hemoglobin with oxygen). 3

Dark color blood indicates low oxygen in the blood (venous

hemoglobin without oxygen). 3

Very small color changes indicate desaturated blood

Accuracy in Desaturation

A performance study was conducted using one tabletop

and three finger pulse oximeters that were attached to a

subject who was breathing through a commercially

available re-breather to induce hypoxia.4
