USS Ronald Reagan (CVN 76)“On weight and ready to wrestle off

for one of the 8 spots on the team, in both Greco-Roman and Freestyle. I

am beyond grateful that my command and the team gave me this

opportunity to come out and compete for a spot to represent the Navy at the Armed Forces

Championship. Embrace the grind. “

OS2 Zachariah Manning125kg Freestyle-130kg Greco

USS Leyte Gulf (CG 55) “My knee is getting better. I got a

kneepad that is helping. I am improving every practice. I am

pushing forward to do my best. This is an experience of a lifetime. I cannot

thank my chain-of-command enough for this opportunity, and I am making the most of this.”

IT2 Craig Penzien97kg Freestyle-98kg Greco

USS George Washington (CVN 73)“In the second week the team is really

starting to mesh together. For me, to become a member of the All-Navy

Wrestling team would be a great honor. I have been wrestling for a

long time, been on many teams, and this team would be both amazing and humbling to add to that

list.”AN Lance Jeffries

74kg Freestyle-75kg Greco USS Nimitz (CVN 68)

“Navy wrestling has proved to be everything I expected and more. I

haven’t been in a room working and grinding like this since I was in my

college room. Bumps and bruises come with the sport though. My conditioning and technique is feeling better everyday. At my weight in particular, we have

a handful of guys competing for the number one spot. I am the number one seed in freestyle and the number two seed for

Greco roman. I’m feeling pretty confident going into wrestle offs. Winning the starting spot is the first step to the ultimate goal of

winning the Armed Forces Championship. That is what I have in my mind. Thank you for your continued support. I plan on

representing my V4 Nimitz team and the Navy!”

AS3 David Perez65kg Freestyle-66kg GrecoUSS America (LHA 6)“Training continues to go well, as my mind and body have adjusted to the nature of our schedule. I’ve learned a lot and am ready to put my skills to the test Wednesday at wrestle-offs, which decides who make the

All-Navy wrestling team. To me, making this team is very important because of the hard work I have put in. My opponent has not worked as hard as me, and although I may be lacking in experience, he will be hard pressed to beat me. Thank you again for the continued support.”

OS3 Abril Ramirez63kg FreestyleUSS Halsey (DG 97)“I’m on my second week of training, and I have already started to see improvements in my conditioning and wrestling. I have been learning so many things since I’ve been here. I’m really enjoying this experience it’s

rough some times, from the bumps and bruises, but that’s how we get better. I’m really looking forward to the next couple of weeks to see how much I can improve and be ready for the Armed Forc-es Championship.”

HN Bobby Hiro Raines57kg&61kg Freestyle-59kg GrecoNaval Branch Health Clinic Port Hueneme“I get more excited as wrestle offs draw closer. Last year I felt that my weight and experience in these styles were my biggest downfall. Now that

I’ve put on more weight and improved my technique, I can’t wait to see how well I will do. I am the type of person that loves challenges. The stronger my opponents are, the more I want to face them to put my skills to the test. The person I have to wrestle off against is a phenomenal wrestler, he’s extremely strong and his years of experience make him a very formidable opponent. Making the All-Navy wrestling team is just a stepping-stone to get me closer to Olympic gold. The moment I step onto the mat it is life or death in my head, I’m going to war and I have to put everything I have out there to come out the victor.”

ND2 David Close74kg Freestyle-75kg Greco MDSU-2“It’s been an exciting week preparing for the tryout portion of camp. We are working hard to have a good showing at the Armed Forces Cham-

pionship, regardless of who makes the team. Every practice is a chance to better each other and ourselves. Wrestling two different styles is a new and interesting challenge. Tryouts will be the final test of who has adapted to them the best. “

IC3 Austin Craig74kg Freestyle-75kg Greco

USS Nimitz (CVN 68) “This week in camp has been tough

yet rewarding we are training savagely in preparation for the Armed Forces Championship, which is an Olympic

Trials qualifier. Becoming an Olympian has been one of my three

goals for as long as I can remember. I had no direction in how to obtain it until last season. Now I work day and night to improve my chances making the team will be one step closer to stepping on the Olympic podium. Time to embrace the grind, reap what

I sow and take only what I earn... I’m am still extremely thankful to my chain-of-command for allowing me this opportunity to

make my dream a reality.”DC2 Charles Pace

74kg Freestyle-75kg Greco USS Cole (DDG 67)

“The second week of practice was a little rough because I had to sit out

for a few days for medical reasons. I hated not being on the mat, but I was able to work out on my own doing a lot of sprints and pull ups. I was able

to wrestle again on Saturday and felt good about my performance. With wrestle offs just around the corner, I’m

getting really nervous on making the team. Ever since I’ve joined I have wanted to be on the All-Navy team. Its something my

recruiter told me about to sell me on the navy. Ever since then I’ve wanted to do it and I finally have my chance now. With five people in my weight class I have my work cut out for me, but I know I’m going to give it my all. No matter what the result is,

I’m very happy and fortunate to be here and have this shot and I will continue trying to make the team as long as I’m in the navy.”

ND3 Blake Borges70kg Freestyle-71kg Greco

SDVT-1“I expected another normal week

of wrestling, I was wrong. Two days into the week my big toe swelled to

the size of a tomato. I had no choice; it was time to undergo surgery. After

they took half my toenail, all was kosher. I’m now back in the fight and ready for wrestle offs. Making the all navy team is the

ultimate way to fight for our navy. GO USA!”

MM3 James Souza85kg Freestyle-86kg Greco

USS America (LHA 6)“I never feel more alive than when I’m on the mat wrestling, living my dream.

There’s no one who can stop me but myself and I will make sure to leave it all on the mats. It’s time to do or die. There is no quit in me. The only way anyone will keep me from

being the champ is to pry it from my cold dead hands. We’re here to wrestle for the Navy and everyone will know it before the

night is over.”

AEAN Joseph K. Blaes 97kg Freestyle-98kg GrecoHSC-4“Just finished up our second week of training. Still pretty sore with minor injuries here and there, but nothing too serious. The team is wrestling extremely well and we are feeling very confident for our competition in a few weeks. We are

very lucky to have this camp to keep all our focus on wrestling. We will have wrestle offs this week to decide who will be competing at each weight class at the Armed Forces Championship. I plan on continuing not only making my family and friends proud, but my command and the whole Navy as well!”

MA2 Bobby Yamashita70kg Freestyle-71kg GrecoNAS Pensacola“Wow! Bodies are being launched all over the mats and it’s just been a great energetic week of practice for the whole team. I guess you can call it fearlessness or stupidity but we just lock up, don’t

back down and whoever has more guts usually will get these high amplitude throws. Personally, I feel I’ve been improving with my technique and everything seems a lot smoother. Connor McGregor said it best, ‘precision beats power and timing beats speed.’ You can have all the power and speed you want but if you don’t use it efficiently, basically you just wasted your energy and your opponents will capitalize on it. I feel more comfortable with my pummeling, pushing, pulling and just subtle moves that helps open up all my other big moves. I’m getting ready to wrestle-off against Blake in a best out of three match qualifier in both Greco-roman and freestyle wrestling in the 71kg and 70kg weight classes. I already know we’re going to kill each other and it’s going to be a non-stop, action packed, high scoring battle.”

AE2 White Dawkins65kg Freestyle-66kg GrecoVP-40“Week two was smoother, as my body was able to adjust to the two-a-day schedule. I got another black eye just as the other disappeared. We will have wrestle offs this next week and I have been preparing mentally. I try to make it

up on Tuesday, which are our days off. I’d like to take this opportu-nity to say thank you to the triad and chain, I’ll make you all proud. Please reach out to myself or the team in case you had any ques-tions for me. I appreciate your support, Laging Handa!”

tough. Pushing through the soreness and pain to prepare for wrestle offs. It’s hard sometimes and i want to give up, but I dig deep and ask myself why I’m

really here. It’s because I love this sport.“
