Homelessness in D.C.

Although the DC Maryland Virginia area (DMV) is one of the richest areas in the United States, a homeless population still exists and is in need of basic supplies. According to the Thrive DC Organization, one-fifth of DC residents are currently living in poverty and around 57,000 are experiencing extreme poverty. There are around 7,000 homeless individuals on average living in Washington DC and over the past year the average has increased by almost 12 percent. Since we live in such a developed area and have jobs, we fail to notice that homelessness can slowly affect our community in a negative way. Our society cares enough to notice the problem, but not enough to actually act and fix the problem. We also fail to realize how rapidly the homeless population is growing. Our job as community oriented seniors is to assist these individuals with necessary essentials as it would build a small step into stopping the problem of homelessness within our area.

Care Packages

Each care package that we created included several different items that would benefit any homeless individual tremendously. Based on information from The Dollar Tree the packages contained several toiletry items such as; wipes, tissues, chapstick, deodorant, toothbrush, toothpaste, hand sanitizer, and a couple non-perishable food items. Before distributing the packages we also created sandwiches, which we distributed along with our package. Every package we create totals to around 10 dollars per package.
