NIEVE’S NIL HELPS ‘TOPES BLANK ‘BIRDS 12-0: Starter Fernando Nieve tossed 7.0 scoreless innings and was buoyed by three home runs as the Albuquerque Isotopes blew out the Memphis Redbirds 12-0 on Friday night at Isotopes Park. Nieve delivered a standout performance through his season-high 7.0 innings of work, allowing only four hits and two walks while striking out a pair en route to his third win of the year and second in his last three outings. Albuquerque’s bats were red-hot throughout the night, initially thanks to Scott Van Slyke, who ripped an RBI single in the first and blasted a two-run home run in the third to give the ‘Topes a quick 3-0 edge. After Van Slyke’s blast, Luis Cruz followed with a one-out single, stole second and scored on an RBI single from Tim Federowicz to make it 4-0, Albuquerque. The Isotopes again dented the scoreboard three innings later with a five-run sixth that started with an RBI single by Nieve that extended the ‘Topes’ advantage 5-0. After a Memphis miscue allowed another run to score, Jerry Sands destroyed a Clay Zavada offering over the left field wall for a three run bomb that boosted the ‘Topes to a 9-0 lead. The Isotopes continued the rout in the seventh as Aaron Miles smashed his first dinger of the season, a three-run blast, to widen the gap 12-0 and send Albuquerque coasting to victory. WILL I AM: Will Savage makes the start looking to put to rest a three-game losing streak and get back in the win column since he won his seventh straight decision on May 13. After posting a 3.40 ERA (18 ER / 47.2 IP) in his first 11 appearances (six starts), the right-hander has posted a 9.39 ERA (16 ER / 15.1 IP) over the course of the skid. One of the factors for the streak is a sudden and uncharacteristic susceptibility to the walk. After yielding 13 total walks over his first 11 outings, Savage has walked eight in his last three games. What bodes well is the right-hander has performed well at Isotopes Park, where he’s posted a 3-1 record in six games (three starts). SHOOTING BLANKS: Three of the last four Isotopes victories have come via the shutout, raising the ‘Topes’ total number of shut- outs this season to four, tied for third most in the Pacific Coast League behind Nashville’s league-leading six. We’re not even to the halfway point in the season and already Albuquerque has almost equaled the number of shutouts it had last year (five) and is halfway to a team record in shutouts of eight, set in 2006 and tied in 2009. Even more impressive is two of the four shutouts have come at Isotopes Park, a 5-0 win on April 30 vs. Oklahoma City and last night’s 12-0 trouncing of Memphis. BEWARE OF OBJECTS LEAVING THE FIELD: The Isotopes have hom- ered in each of their last seven home games, a span in which they’ve blasted an amazing total of 16 dingers. The month of June is just nine days old and already the ‘Topes have belted eight long balls, tied for third most in the PCL. Oklahoma City continues to leave the yard at an even greater pace, hitting 10 homers this month and a league-leading 72 on the season. SLAMMING SANDS: Amazingly, Jerry Sands has reached base in every game he’s played at Isotopes Park this season, a total of 16 straight contests. Sands has hit in eight of his last 10 Pacific Coast League games, a streak that was interrupted by a two-week stay with the Dodgers, a span in which he’s bat- ted .333 (13x39) with 12 runs, two doubles, a triple, four homers, and nine RBI. MASCOT MANIA!!: Minor League Baseball has been holding an NCAA basketball tournament-style mascot contest and the Isotopes’ very own Orbit has advanced to the Elite Eight, where he’s up against that loathsome pile of rags known as “Spike” from Round Rock for a berth in the Final Four! Fans are encouraged to vote early and often at www.abqisotopes.com! Voting for this round lasts until Monday, June 11. BIG HOMESTAND ROLLS ON!: The ‘Topes’ action-packed homestand continues tonight with a special Elvis-themed fireworks show! TODAY’S START: Will Savage takes the mound looking to snap a three-game losing streak after suffering the defeat in his last start in Round Rock on June 3 when he allowed five runs on seven hits in 4.1 innings while walking one and fanning one in a 7-3 ‘Topes defeat. Earned his seventh straight victory on May 13 at Salt Lake when he pitched 6.0 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits while walking two and striking out two in a 10-7 ‘Topes win. The victory tied a team record for consecu-tive victories equaling a markset by Sean Bergman in 2003 and tied by Daniel Barone in 2007 and Hyang-Nam Choi in 2009. Beat Oklahoma City on May 3 after allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks through 5.0 innings in a 15-5 ‘Topes win. Also helped his cause at the plate, belting a two-run homer, his first professional home run. Before moving to the rotation, made five appearances out of the bullpen in which he was superb, racking up three wins while posting a 2.13 ERA (3 ER / 12.2 IP). Entered the game on April 18 vs. Iowa in the third inning after starter Fernando Nieve was ejected and pitched a then-season-high 4.1 frames, allowing just two hits and a walk while striking out two to earn his third victory of the season.

2011: Led the Double-A Southern League with 12 wins (12-6) and ranked among the league leaders in ERA (3.95, 8th), innings (141.1, 9th) and WHIP (1.25, 2nd) in 25 games (23 starts) with Chattanooga… tied for the most wins in the Dodger organiza-tion with Dana Eveland... selected to the Southern League All-Star game, going 7-2 with a 3.70 ERA (30 ER / 73.0 IP) in the season’s first half... tossed the second com-plete game of his career on May 14 against Tennessee, allowing just one run on five hits over 9.0 innings, striking out five and walking only one in the Lookouts’ 9-1 vic-tory… his other complete game was a 7.0-inning shutout on May 22, 2010 at Lansing (Single-A Midwest League)... limited right-handed hitters to a .241 batting average... appeared in two games out of the bullpen in a long-relief role, allowing two runs in 9.0 innings (2.00 ERA) and limiting opposing hitters to a .229 batting average… picked up his only save of the season on Sept. 4 against Montgomery with 4.0 innings of two-run ball to close out Chattanooga’s 10-5 win.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS: Pitched for three Dodger affiliates in his first year in the organization in 2010, going a combined 10-5 with a 4.32 ERA (73 ER / 152.0 IP) in 25 starts with Single-A Great Lakes, Single-A Inland Empire, and Double-A Chat-tanooga... his 152.0 innings of work was the second-most of any pitcher in the Dodgers organization... went 3-0 with a 2.38 ERA (9 ER / 34.0 IP) in five May starts and was selected as Midwest League Pitcher of the Week from May 17-23 to win a Dodger Pride Award for Great Lakes... tossed a 7.0-inning complete game shutout on May 22 at Lansing.

Released by Philadelphia on April 4, 2009 and pitched for two independent teams Lan-caster and Wichita, going a combined 6-7 with a 2.96 ERA (44 ER / 133.2 IP) in 21 games (20 starts)... posted a 2.94 ERA in 18 starts with Wichita, the fourth-best ERA in the American Association, while also ranking fifth in the league in both innings pitched (125.1) and starts... tossed a no-hitter on June 23 in a 1-0 win vs. Sioux City, in which he fanned seven, including four over the last two innings... the gem was just the second no-hitter since the history of the independent American Association... worked into the sixth inning in 17 of his 19 starts and allowed three or fewer earned runs in 15 of them.

Saw action in just six games for Double-A Reading in the Phillies organization in 2008 before going on the Disabled List with a right elbow injury... diagnosed with a slight tear in the ulnar collateral ligament but did not require surgery.

Played the entire 2007 season with Single-A Clearwater, going 4-3 with a 3.63 ERA (25 ER / 62.0) and three saves in a career-high 42 relief appearances... 14 of his appearances were 2.0 innings or longer... in nine appearances in June went 1-1 with a 0.60 ERA (1 ER / 15.0 IP) and two saves.
