  • LYNCH

  • THE TOM CRUISE MARATHON (35mm x 5)For forty-three years the world was been blessed with a man. You see, this man isnt especially tall, and he isnt especially strong, but he possessed the ability to run faster than any living creature, and he had the ability to bring a mighty bear to its knees with the simplest of smiles. This man impressed the world by singing Bob Seger in his underpants and playing volleyball with his friends. This man has become one of the greatest action heroes to have ever lived, and he did so without firing a gun or throwing a punch for the duration of his ascension to the action hero throne. This man is Tom Cruise. This show is the ultimate five-mystery-movie celebration of the swiftest man in Hollywood.

ERASERHEAD (1977, 35mm)David Lynch once described his stunning debut feature simply as a dream of dark and troubling things, but the unclassifiable ERASERHEAD is so much more: an expressionistic headtrip, a Grand Guignol nightmare, a pitch-black comedy of manners, and a deeply personal allegory about the (post-) nuclear family. Amidst a monochromatic wasteland teeming with smoke and shadows, Jack Nances wire-haired wage slave Henry struggles to navigate the horrors of mutant offspring, sinister hallucinations and, most terrifying of all, his new in-laws.

THE ELEPHANT MAN (1980, 35mm)Based upon the life of Joseph Merrick, THE ELEPHANT MAN is a moving portrait of one misshapen mans struggle to find and maintain his dignity amidst the horrors and hardships of 19th-century London. David Lynch implicates us all in the voyeurism of the Victorian freak show as we watch the disfig-ured Merrick (John Hurt) progress from stinking slum to high society. His benefactor, Dr Frederick Treves (Anthony Hopkins) believes he is working to restore his patients dignity, but Lynch undercuts his patronage, and our sentimental response, by pitilessly skewering the self-deception at the heart of supposedly civilised behaviour.

DUNE (1984, 35mm)David Lynchs feature film take on Frank Herberts sprawling sci-fi saga is about a prophesied messiah (Kyle MacLachlan) coming to his destiny in a galactic feudal society that runs on spice. Despite bombing at the box office and receiving scath-ing criticism upon its release, it remains one of the most unique and visually exciting sci-fi films of the 1980s, displaying Lynchs vast, vivid imagination and directorial prowess in handling such an epic project. Condensed down to a lean 137 minutes, the plot of DUNE is as murky as the air during a desert sandstorm, especially for those unfamiliar with the books. But it still has more than enough Lynchian panache to be worth absorbing. Plus, its got Sting running around crazy-haired and mostly naked and a soundtrack by Toto!

BLUE VELVET (1986, 35mm)David Lynch cemented his reputation as an uncompromising visionary with BLUE VELVET, one of the most controversial films of the 1980s, burrowing beneath the surface of idyllic suburban America to reveal a sinister underworld of sex and violence. After stumbling upon a severed human ear, a young college student (Kyle MacLachlan) becomes obsessed with

investigating its origins and gets entangled with a nightclub chanteuse (Isabella Rossellini) and her psychopathic lover (Dennis Hopper). A masterfully eerie, depraved psychosexual nightmare and one of the greatest films of the 1980s.

WILD AT HEART (1990, 35mm)David Lynch throws Southern Gothic melodrama, The Wizard of Oz, surreal-kinky violence, and Elvis into a brewing cauldron for this nightmarish soap opera. Based on the pulp novel by author Barry Gifford, WILD AT HEART follows outlaw lovers Sailor (Nic Cage) and Lula (Laura Dern) as they go on the run through a menacing Deep South populated by the usual stable of unsettling Lynchian weirdos. The director received the Palme dOr amid the most violent chorus of boos and hisses to be heard in a decade (Dave Kehr).

DAVID LYNCH MYSTERY PROGRAMSecrets and mysteries provide a beautiful corridor where you can float out. The corridor expands and many, many wonderful things can happen. I love the process of going into mystery. The more unknowable the mystery, the more beautiful it is. - David Lynch

TWIN PEAKS PILOT (1990, 35mm)When homecoming queen Laura Palmer is found brutally mur-dered and wrapped in plastic, FBI Special Agent Dale Cooper and Sheriff Harry S. Truman soon discover that in the town of Twin Peaks no one is innocent and nothing is what it seems. And theres more Lynch to come in August including the rest of his features, the complete Twin Peaks marathon, two more Mys-tery programs, and an 8 film David Lynch Influences series!

EL TOPO (1970, 35mm)The bearded, leather-clad gunfighter El Topo (Jodorowsky himself ) and his young son (Brontis Jodorowsky) ride through the desert and into a hamlet of bloodily decimated people and animals. From then on, its a winding, spiraling road of evil bandits, mystical foes and whip-cracking dykes, spiked with in-delible, inexplicable imagery. A veritable blur of ridiculous and sublime (and ridiculous-sublime) moments that defy ordinary readings while inviting (demanding, really) audience involve-ment via active interpretation.

THE HOLY MOUNTAIN (1973, 35mm)Alejandro Jodorowsky followed up his intense cult hit EL TOPO with this even more intense meditation on planetary relations, black ritual, and general grotesqueries. THE HOLY MOUNTAIN follows a Christlike protagonist as he joins a footless, handless dwarf to perform in a village for tourist dollars. The man then leaves town, gets himself involved with an Alchemist who can turn excrement into gold, and finally launches into a series of astrological visions that result in a mind-numbing tornado of satirical surrealism. Jodorowsky is a visionary artist in the truest sense, and THE HOLY MOUN-TAIN is his most expressive and honest work.

  • PIRANHA (1978, 35mm)We should all be thankful for Stevie Spielberg. If it wasnt for him, there would be no JAWS. And if it wasnt for JAWS, there would be no PIRANHA. And if theres no PIRANHA, whats the point? Half JAWS spoof and half trash-gore powerhouse, Joe Dantes PIRANHA holds the key to the most bitchin summer of your life.

RUNAWAY NIGHTMARE (1982, 35mm)DIRECTOR MIKE CARTEL IN PERSON! NEVER BE-FORE SCREENED IN 35MM! Call it the lifes work of a ded-icated lunatic. Call it a supernatural porno without the porn. Or, call it the weirdest horror obscurity to ever hit the Terror Tuesday screen. This is the baffling D.I.Y. action-horror hybrid that Doris Wishman might have made if she had interned on the set of Russ Meyers FASTER PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL!

PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERICS REVENGE (1989, 35mm)In case you missed it, this movie is called PHANTOM OF THE MALL: ERICS REVENGE. That alone convinces you that it will be the greatest thing on the planet. It might be nice to focus on the minutia of this direct-to-video gutter slasher that has inexplicably turned up on 35mm to provide us with intense happiness. But why bother? Morgan Fairchild, Pauly Shore, and Ken Foree made the best decisions of their lives when they decided to star in this movie.

MOTEL HELL (1980, 35mm)In the 1970s, serial killer Ed Gein made cannibalism and human-flesh wardrobes into youth culture sensations. When not blaring Journey or learning macrame, the eras teens could often be found enjoying the latest Gein-inspired cinematic masterpiece, from TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE to the incredible DERANGED. MOTEL HELL takes the crown as the most deeply pleasurable, fun-powered man-as-meat tale ever set loose on the public. Features a chainsaw war between a cop and a man wearing a giant pigs head.

THE SADIST (1963, 35mm)STAR ARCH HALL, JR. IN PERSON! Loosely based on the crimes of Charles Starkweather, who provided the sicko inspira-tion for BADLANDS and NATURAL BORN KILLERS, THE SADIST is a rabid, angst-filled champion of 1960s horror. If an episode of THE TWILIGHT ZONE was directed by Tobe Hooper circa 1974, it might have turned out like this movie.

INVASION U.S.A. (1985, 35mm)Production company Cannon Films earned a reputation among connoisseurs of 80s action movies for consistently delivering over-the-top, violent products that had more guts than sense. INVASION U.S.A. is a crown jewel in their collection: a para-noid, explodey action-thriller set in a cartoon version of reality that fans the flames of the Cold War with the kind of dumb, macho rage that, like a denim tuxedo, only Chuck Norris could pull off with any sincerity.

THIS IS AMERICA PART 2 (1980, 35mm)Theres no need to see Part 1 of this Italian produced travelogue that shines a light into the dark corners of weird America. Rum-

maging through our garbage and peeking in our closets, the producers expose such wild goings-on as karate nuns, topless carwashes, amateur superheroes, worm eaters, erotic bakeries, public orgies, Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafras mayoral run, and a brothel... but for dogs.

POOR PRETTY EDDIE (1975, 35mm)Everyone who sees this stunning, brain-scraping masterpiece is amazed by it. It tells the story of a famous singer who sets out on a drive through Georgia to get away from it all. When her car breaks down in a rural area she gets a room at the local hotel, run by maniacal method actress Shelley Winters and her evil country singer boyfriend Eddie. Within five minutes of her arrival, things go shockingly downhill. One of the best movies of the 70s or ever.

SUPER FUZZ (1980, 35mm)Outrageously dubbed Italian comedy about policeman David Speed, played by comedy spaghetti western icon Terence Hill, who stands a little too close to an exploding nuclear missile. Just as in real life, the exposure to devastating atomic shockwaves and high levels of radioactive plutonium gives him super powers. With Ernest Borgnine as his by-the-book partner, who just gets all steamed up when Officer Dave wont follow the rules.

NORTHVILLE CEMETERY MASSACRE (1980, 35mm)WRITER/DIRECTOR WILLIAM DEAR IN PERSON!Cops and bikers will always be at war. NORTHVILLE CEM-ETERY MASSACRE takes that premise to extremes, framing the bikers as true emblems of freedom and individuality who are repeatedly victims of a violent and corrupt police force. Like The Wild Bunch on Wheels, a series of violent encounters lights a fuse that eventually explodes in an unforgettable climax.

THE 68TH ANNUAL SYLVESTER STALLONE BIRTH-DAY CELEBRATION (19??, 35mm)Hes an actor, writer, director and even a painter - so why hasnt Sylvester Stallone been fully acknowledged as the great American artist that he is? Celebrate his 68th year on earth with a different Rocky movie at each Alamo Drafthouse theater! Unique Mondo poster available to buy at the screening!

20,000 DAYS ON EARTH (2014)Drama and reality combine in a fictitious 24 hours in the life of musician and international cultural icon Nick Cave. With startlingly frank insights and an intimate portrayal of the artistic process, the film examines what makes us who we are, and cele-brates the transformative power of the creative spirit.

Girlie Night: EMPIRE RECORDS (1995, 35mm)What is the greatest job in the world? Duh, working at Empire Records!! What could be better than spending your days rocking out to 90s alterna, throwing fake funerals, yelling SHOPLIFT-ER! and, most importantly, celebrating Rex Manning Day? So if youve ever found yourself doing the Lucas dance or gluing quarters to the floor as an artistic statement, come join us for Girlie Night, where yelling Oh Rexy, youre so SEXY! will be highly encouraged.

Tough Guy Cinema: HARD BOILED (1992, 35mm)The films original tagline was more exciting than a dozen Die Hards, and frankly even that isnt enough to prepare you for the jaw-dropping, life-altering ballet of bullets that John Woo has in

store for you. Doves will fly, bullets will fire and by the end of the night you will see Chow Yun-Fat diving out of the second story of a hospital building with a live baby in his arms while firing a pistol all in glorious 35mm.

A HARD DAYS NIGHT (1964)Just one month after they exploded onto the U.S. scene with their Ed Sullivan Show appearance, John, Paul, George, and Ringo began working on a project that would bring their revolutionary talent to the big screen. Directed with raucous, anything-goes verve by Richard Lester and featuring a slew of iconic pop anthems, this is one of the most deliriously entertaining movies of all time.

Zzang!!!: THE LAST DRAGON (1985, 35mm)Bruce Leroy embarks upon a quest to become the greatest martial arts master to have ever lived. But when low-down, no-good, all-around bad mamma jamma ShoNuff shows up to destroy Leroy, an epic battle of Good vs. Evil explodes that leaves 80s pop divas, break dancing fools and child kung-fu prodigies in its wake. A neon soaked, blaxsploitation, kung-fu musical with karate chops as strong as its comedy.

THE LIFE AND CRIMES OF DORIS PAYNE (2013)A glamorous 83-year-old, Doris Payne is as unapologetic today about the $2 million in jewels shes stolen over a 60-year career as she was the day she stole her first carat. With Doris now on trial, this documentary probes beneath her consummate smile to un-cover the secrets of her trade and what drove her to a life of crime. Stylized recreations, an extensive archive and candid interviews reveal how Payne managed to jet-set her way into any Cartier or Tiffanys from Monte Carlo to Japan and walk out with small for-tunes. This sensational portrait exposes a rebel who defies societys prejudices and pinches her own version of the American Dream.

Marx Bros: LOVE HAPPY (1949)Harpo fans unite! Allegedly green-lit to help Chico pay off his gambling debts, LOVE HAPPY is a surprisingly touching swan song for not only the Marx Brotherss film career, but also the genius of Harpo Marx. A small acting troupe struggles to produce a play called Love Happy. Harpo, acting as the groups mascot, steals groceries to help his starving friends. But when a stolen sardine can also contains stolen diamonds, Harpo finds himself in the middle of an international espionage adventure. A misunder-stood gem in the canon of 1940s Hollywood comedies.

Kids Club: PETES DRAGON (1977, 35mm)His name is Elliott. Hes 20 feet high, 40 feet long. He can become invisible at the drop of a hat, or spew red hot flames. In fact, theres only one way to bring this awesome beast under con-trol... rub his tummy. Magical musical numbers and spectacular Disney animation combine to make an adventure of miraculous proportions. So grab a kid or bring just yourself for a FREE 35mm Kids Club screening and have a Brazzle Dazzle Day.

ROCKY IV (1985, 35mm)The most American movie in the history of America! In his fourth and most momentous screen adventure, wee punchin ma-chine Rocky Balboa shakes the foundations of the nation when he goes toe-to-iron boot with Drago (Dolph Lundgren), a Rus-sian Frankenstein who looks like he uses Italians as dental floss. But our hero remains undaunted, diving fearlessly into a montage barrage thatll rattle you like a boxing glove fulla borscht. This movie is so red-white-n-black-n-blue that its aftershocks directly resulted in the dissolution of Soviet Russia just six years later!

Cinema Club: SOME LIKE IT HOT (1959, 35mm)Tony Curtis, Jack Lemmon, and Marilyn Monroe have never been better in this tale of two struggling musicians who witness a mob hit and are forced to hit the road with an all-female traveling band in the midst of Prohibition. If seeing these three titans of cinema on display under the guidance of the great Billy Wilder isnt enough for you, well then Cinema Cocktails is here to ease you into it in non-Prohibition-style.

STOP MAKING SENSE (1984)Director Jonathan Demme captured Talking Heads at their most powerful in this rousing concert film. Lead by David By-rne, the bands energy is contagious, and the excitement builds from song to song as the stage goes from bare to an intricate design that perfectly compliments the music. Once you get to David Byrne in the most exaggerated version of his iconic suit, youll be smiling so hard your cheeks will hurt.

Homo Arigato!: SUPERSTAR: THE KAREN CAR-PENTER STORY (1987)The tragic life of Karen Carpenter as told with emaciated Barbie dolls, archive footage, fake talking heads and ample, unautho-rised use of The Carpenters music. But this description belies the films true depth, its emotional impact, and its surprising insights into anorexia, the strange intertwining of music and politics, and the pressures that are placed on those in the public light, particularly women. Screened with addition shorts from director Todd Haynes.

Cinema Club: TARGETS (1968, 35mm)Elderly horror-film star who, while making a personal appear-ance at a drive-in theater, confronts a psychotic Vietnam veteran whos turned into a mass-murdering sniper. Centered around Karloffs poignant meta-performance and director Peter Bog-danovichs raw ambition, TARGETS is a compelling B-picture brimming a social and cinematic intensity that still resonates today. Stick around for a post-film roundtable discussion!

THX 1138 (1971) WITH LIVE SCORE BY CONVEYORA chilling exploration of the future, George Lucas sci-fi classic stars Robert Duvall as a man whose mind and body are con-trolled by the government. He makes a harrowing attempt to escape from a world where thoughts are controlled, freedom is an impossibility and love is the ultimate crime. Accompanied by a brand new live score performed by the band Conveyor.

Video Vortex: TIME OF THE APES (1987, 35mm)An illogical black hole of madness, jam-packed with psychedelic visuals, deranged dubbing, and ape soldiers who drive rain-bow-colored hippie vans. The movie reeks of desperation, haste, and recklessness. It has UFOs and a child-ape named Pepe who wears corduroys. Were not saying that TIME OF THE APES is better than PLANET OF THE APES. But it probably is.

WATTSTAX (1973)An incredible outpouring of music, soul and the black experi-ence. A concert staged in the L.A. Coliseum in the Summer of 1972, WATTSTAX brought together over 100,000 people in a spirit of joy, pride and celebration. Virtually the entire Stax Records roster, including Isaac Hayes, Rufus Thomas and the Staple Singers, put their hearts into performances that matched the magic of the occasion and forged a connection with the crowd which is still remembered and revered.
