MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL, MRS. KATHRYN ALLEN

Dear Families, We hope you had a wonderful long weekend and a fantastic start to the new Islamic year. We wish a healthy and prosperous year for you and your family.

Our main priorities at Al Muna

Be Safe!

Our first priority to ensure that children are safe. You will be aware of many of the measures we take to ensure this, for example, fire drills, risk-assessing activities, close supervision around school- especially for younger pupils etc. This year, we have also brought Year 1 and 2 classes downstairs, to minimise risks for our younger pupils of repeatedly using the stairs. This has also meant that Key Stage 1 parents can collect children from the classroom, which makes for a safer handover for our younger children.

Be Happy!

Our second priority is to ensure that children are happy at school. We make learning fun, praise and reward children and do everything we can to help them make positive friendships in school. Please speak to your child’s class teacher if you feel there is anything further we can do to support your child in this respect. We have a wonderful counsellor who can also help.

Be the best that you can be!Our third priority is to ensure that children at Al Muna make the very best progress that they can make. This is

a very important focus this year and I will be updating you regularly about the strategies we are putting in place, and how you can help- in school and at home. Items for the Playground

If you have any unwanted, good condition items that you would like to donate for our playground (e.g. small soft balls, jigsaws/puzzles, suitable table-top games, etc.) please hand them in to the administrative staff on reception. Age-appropriate comics and magazines are also very welcome. Thank you in advance for your support.

Food Policy

Our food policy was shared with families last week. Please can we remind everyone that large treats for birthdays etc. are not allowed, for example doughnuts should be the miniature kind. Staff have been asked to return treats back to parents if they are not small. Thank you for your understanding and co-operation. Having a healthy school population is important. Parking Around School We are a busy, city-centre school and the levels of traffic in the area cannot be avoided. Please take care when driving and parking around school and try not to block other cars in; safety and courtesy are crucial. Thank you.

Mrs Byrne

Sadly, it is my duty to inform you that Marie Byrne, our Head of Inclusion, will not be returning to Al Muna due to some recent ill health and personal circumstances that have required her to return, indefinitely, to the UK.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Marie for her hard work, dedication and commitment to our school and most importantly to our pupils. She has created a strong Oasis

Team who, though they will miss her very much, are also highly dedicated and hard-working and will continue to do an excellent job in our school.

We are in the process of seeking out an exceptional candidate to join us as Head of Inclusion. In the meantime, Kate McMillan (Head of Inclusion for Aldar Academies) will work with us 1 or 2 days per week to support with inclusion and is available should any parents wish to speak with her.

Academy of Excellence

We had many, very strong, applications for our Academy of Excellence this year. Well done to those who have been successful. And, for those who were not successful this time, don’t give- there is always next year. My personal thanks to Mrs Evans, for taking on the lead role for the Academy of Excellence this year and to Mr Pearce for his hard work to ensure a smooth application and interview process. We look forward to sharing in the achievements of our A of E students through the year. Some of our assemblies will be dedicated to sharing their learning and experiences.

LIBRARY NEWS:This week we welcomed our newest and youngest readers to the library. All FS1 classes have been introduced to the library and proper book borrowing will be starting from next week. We can tell they were all super excited with their session. All new books have been processed and are being added to our library collection including new French books.

All classes have started their AR tests and following the same please ensure that the students have their AR folders and books with them when they come for an AR test. No student will be allowed to take a test if they do not bring their log sheets folders and books. In case you have any question related to AR please free to contact us.Library Bag:

It is also mandatory that the students bring their library bags on their respective library days as we are unable to issue any new books unless students have their library bags. We understand that some students have still not been able to get their bags so we request all parents to send the library bags strictly from next week. It can be a regular book bag as long as it can securely hold the library book. ZAKS Uniform Book Bag is not mandatory. As long as they have a strong book bag to carry their books without damaging them we will make sure they have a library book everytime. However we will not be able to accommodate student if they forget their book bags on their library day.Parents are also welcome to have

free membership of our library and borrow books. We have some new and exciting activities that the parents can do with us and we will share all details with you shortly.

MUSIC NEWS:

FS1 began music for the first time this week. They were so excited to get started! We practised using our voices and singing some nursery rhymes. We also danced, clapped, stomped and played maracas to the sound and beat of the guitar. FS2 learned the ‘Walking in the Jungle song’ and explored what instruments they could add to it.

Y1 and Y2 have been exploring the concept of tempo. We discussed what tempo means, what vocab to use when talking about it and what tempos suit what types of songs. We used different tempos to escape from jungle animals in the song ‘Walking in the Jungle’ and followed the tempo of a cowbell leader using different kinds of shaking percussion instruments. Y3 explored Egyptian drumming. We

warmed up with some response games such as ‘Rumble ball’ before learning two types of striking techniques to put together a simple drum pattern. Y4 dealt with the music terminology of major and minor, and learned to distinguish between the two. The then created pictures and sketches to describe what they could hear in music to develop music interpretation.

Y5 learned about the great composer Gustav Holst and listened to the first piece ‘Mars’ from his famous work ‘The Planets Suite’. They created pictures of what the music made them think about and discussed what the composer did within the music to achieve it’s dangerous and dramatic feel. Y6 learned about the famous composer Heitor Villa-Lobos and his

‘PE classes have begun with a big focus on movement throughout the school. Not only are we trying to improve the way we move, the variety of ways we can move and the length of time we can move for, but we are also trying to develop creativity through movement. From FS to year 6, and into adulthood, movement is the foundation of everything that we do. It’s how we get from one point to another and is the key to success in many sports. For the younger year groups we are learning about movement and challenging our coordination, strength

and mobility. For the older year groups we are thinking about how our movement can be applied to games, how we can use it to create space and thinking about how we can use it to our advantage. All the while we are managing to have fun alongside our learning.

Competitive sports are beginning their build up and over the last week we have run trials for the U9 and U11 girls and boys football teams. With fantastic turn outs across the board it is clear that there is going to be

competition for places this year. The girls will begin their league fixtures in the coming weeks whilst the boys will have a little more time to prepare themselves for fixtures which begin in term two. Students who have been successful with their trials will be notified via the sports board and a letter home. We wish all the teams a lot of success this year and we will be working hard to provide them with the best opportunities to help them reach their potential!’

PE NEWS:

famous piece ‘The Little Train of the Caipira’. We discussed what we could hear in the music, the changes in tempo and the unusual instruments used. In groups they created their own train themed performances using glockenspiels and a variety of percussion instruments.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS

FS1 & FS2

FS1:

FS2:

After a lovely long weekend the children have continued to settle in well and they are starting to make lots of new friends, which is lovely to see. By the way, have you heard the latest news? Someone fell off the wall!! Oh, it was…Humpty Dumpty!!! As the beginning of our first new topic, we started to introduce nursery rhymes and learn many different things based on the rhyme. We all know now what happens with an egg when it falls and we know how difficult it is to cut

around an egg shape! We’ve also begun to learn our numbers. All the children were happy to show with their fingers how many Humpty Dumpties’ sat on the wall and to begin counting using our number line. This week the children started their specialist lessons- and already we see many happy faces when we call them to go for PE or Music!!! Please remember FS1 children at this stage need to come dressed for P.E. wearing trainers and the Al Muna P.E. kit.

The FS2 children have been learning and having so much fun at school this week. We have been learning about different things that go ‘Up, up and away’. We have heard so many great suggestions about this topic including an Etihad flight, clouds, hot air balloons, the sun, the moon and owls! Have a look out on your way home for beginning with a sound we have learned this week? We have also been making shapes with different objects this week. Can you find any shapes in your home?

They will also be entitled to borrow a book from the library when bringing a library book bag from next week.Next week we will be learning about two little dicky birds, can you remember the nursery rhyme?

Quote of the week from one of our FS2 children: I don’t like FS2, I don’t hate FS2, I love FS2’.

This week we enjoyed taking part in activities together! We read stories and we learned new songs too. We learned about brain breaks and we sang a fun song called “Baby Shark”. Ask your child to sing it to you… It won’t be long before you will be singing the words too.

We had a lot of fun this week as we took part in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) activity. We designed a covering for an egg so that it didn’t break when it was dropped! We experimented to see which covering worked the best and evaluated our covering to see how we could make it better and improve it the next time.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS

YEAR 1:Our topic for this half term is “Amazing Me” and our enquiry question is “What makes me special?” Next week in English we are going to be reading a new story called “Funnybones”. It is about a skeleton family who go to the park to scare people and end up scaring one another. The children will enjoy the story and we will use story maps and drama to learn the story really well so that we can practise writing the story in the correct sequence too.

In maths next week we are going to be practising our counting skills. We are going to count from 1 to 100 in 1’s and will begin to practise counting

YEAR 3 AND YEAR 4

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS

YEAR 3:We’ve had a busy week in year three! We began the week with some assessments to see how we are doing after our summer break. In Maths we started looking at place value, in particular, we were counting up in 100s, breaking down numbers into hundreds, tens and units and we were reading and writing numbers up to 1000. For example, 367 has 3 hundreds, 6 tens and 7 units and four hundred and eighty two is written as 482. For next weeks’ Maths we will be continuing with our place value, while also looking at our reasoning behind the answers we give. For example,

YEAR 4:

how do we know that 6 in 4645 means 6 hundreds? We will also be looking at explain this using concrete materials. In English we started looking at character descriptions. This will help us for our genre this month which is diary writing. We are hoping to get our first draft of our diary entry done next week. We also looked at some revision of our capital letters and where they should go.

All of our year group have their Mangahigh log in details in their homework books. As yet we have not created any assignments so the

They counted forwards and backwards in steps of 10 and 100 and solved multistep word problems. In science, the children learned about and described the different characteristics of the planets in our Solar System. The students used their ICT skills to research this information and presented interesting facts to their peers.

Next week, in maths, year 5 will be completing working around multiplication and focusing on various methods to multiply. They will also focus heavily on mental multiplication so make sure they are practising their times tables at home. In English, we will be creating a biography about Neil Armstrong and

Well done Year 6 for having a brilliant attitude to learning this week. We are really delighted to see the enthusiasm you have to get back reading your Accelerated Reading books. Both the librarians and teachers will be monitoring the AR tests to ensure you are reading regularly and challenging yourself, gathering new vocabulary for

Porpoise class getting back into the routine completing A.R tests in the library.

YEAR 6:

In English this week we enjoyed using synonyms to improve our descriptive writing, making it more engaging and entertaining for the reader. We had great fun interviewing each other using open and closed questions. We discussed top interview tips, preparing for real life situations. We began to plan our letter in which we will describe ourselves and our targets and aims for the year. We will continue with this next week.

In maths this week we explored place value. Next week we will take a look at decimals, fractions and percentages. We hope that everyone has been able to access homework on OneNote, if you are still facing difficulties please chat to your teacher and we are happy to assist.

In Science, we investigated the difference between inherited and environmental characteristics. We categorised whether a trait was inherited or acquired. We were really surprised when we found out that tongue rolling is inherited by some of us, and others don’t have the ability! Next week we will take a look at some adaptations animals have made to suit their environment.

Parrotfish class distinguishing between inherited and acquired traits- we discussed that some were actually both!

Maria and Amna showing us their ability to roll their tongue.

Dolphins celebrating Shyaam’s birthday!

We shared in what ways we find it easiest to learn in school. We noticed that everybody is individual in the way they learn best! Some people are visual learners and love to use charts, maps and diagrams in their learning. An auditory learner depends on listening and speaking as a main way of learning.
