MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL, MRS. KATHRYN ALLEN

Dear Families,

What a superb first week back we have had!

This is my 25th time starting a school year, and it really has been the very best! All of the children have settled back so quickly, especially our many new Al Muna members. They have made lots of new friends, followed all the routines, and they come in every morning (and go home every afternoon) with a huge smile.

Our teachers are smiling too! They are so proud of their new classes and every one of them has told me that their class is the best!!

Children and staff have been working hard, getting to know each other and creating work for the classroom and shared areas- to make them feel more homely. They have also worked together on a project to celebrate ‘The Year of Zayed’ and we look forward to reading their articles and seeing their artwork.

Thank you also to you- our parents and families. You have settled back well too! There were lots of changes to get used to- with lots of new staff faces, building changes and some adaptations to routines. We also really appreciate the wonderful positive feedback we have received about the great start we have made to the year.

Fitness Thursdays

On Thursdays, if they wish, children may come to school in their PE kit, so that they are ready for fitness before assembly each morning. Mrs Allen will do aerobics some weeks, but some other staff may also lead the school in their fitness passion!

Staff will also come ready for fitness action and parents are strongly encouraged to join in!

Family Puzzler

When does Friday come before Thursday?

School Visit: HH sheikh Ahmed Bin Nasser Bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

On Monday we were honoured with a visit by HH sheikh Ahmed Bin Nasser Bin Zayed Al Nahyan. His Highness visited some of our Year 5 children and toured our Foundation Stage areas. Accompanied by Captain Ahmed Omaid Al Ketbi and Captain Khaled Al Kheili from the Abu Dhabi Police, our special guests were impressed by the enthusiasm of our children and the professionalism of our staff. Children in Year 5 received gifts from Abu Dhabi Police as part of an initiative to raise awareness of the role of the Police in keeping the people of Abu Dhabi safe.

Updated 3.09.2018 MP

Healthy Eating Policy: Packed lunches, snacks and birthday treats in school.

The main aims of this document are to provide guidelines to ensure packed lunches, snacks and birthday treats in school support a healthy diet.

- To ensure children have enough healthy food for snack and lunch - To ensure children receive a balanced nutritious diet that supports their physical growth and

development - To ensure children receive a balanced nutritious diet that supports their mental growth and

development

Children bring a packed lunch containing a fruit snack and lunch.

Juice, water and milk are permitted. All fizzy sugar based drinks are prohibited.

We are a NO NUTS school. To ensure the safety of students who have sensitivity to nuts and nut based products, we discourage all nuts from packed lunches and birthday treats.

In the morning children eat their snack in class. Children do not take food onto the playground.

At lunch time children in Years 1 to 6 eat at tables in the assembly hall. Children in FS 1 and FS 2 eat in their classrooms.

Children are supervised when eating to ensure staff monitor healthy diets and good manners when at the table.

At all times we encourage healthy eating. We take a sensible view – if the lunch is balanced and varied – children are allowed a small treat, e.g. a mini chocolate bar, or small cake.

If the food in a child’s packed lunch is not well balanced, and there are numerous unhealthy items, children will be asked to put these unhealthy items back into their lunchboxes, uneaten. A reminder listing alternative healthy options will be placed in the child’s lunchbox. See NOTE page 3.

Families of children who repeatedly bring in unhealthy packed lunches will be contacted by their child’s Phase Leader.

At all times staff will promote and encourage healthy eating habits in line with positive lifestyle habits, Ministry of Education School Inspection Framework https://www.moe.gov.ae/Ar/ImportantLinks/Inspection/PublishingImages/frameworkbooken.pdf and British National curriculum outcomes.

Food understanding is mainly taught through:

Design and technology: Cooking and nutrition Science Personal, Social, Health and Economic education (PSHE).

Physical education also plays an important part in pupil health and wellbeing.

Message from madamme Janet Lynne Sutton

Bonjour tout le monde! C’est La Rentrée!This week the children will be introducing themselves in French and practising using the French alphabet.

NEWS FROM THE FRENCH DEPARTMENT:NEWSMAKERS

LIBRARY NEWS:

We welcome you back from the holidays. It’s a fresh academic year and we hope you all have had an amazing summer. It has been very busy at the library as we have been working on initial set up of the library systems for the new academic year for the students as well as the parents.

There have been changes for betterment starting from this term and we invite parents to be an active part of the library this year as we plan to start book reading clubs and mystery reader plans. The details will be communicated to you in the coming weeks. All classes will have a mini library that will be updated every term to promote active reading. Also this library is being put together by the students themselves as they will be choosing books themselves instead of their teachers.

There have been no issuance of books this week as the students data was being imported and new browser cards being prepared so they have been choosing books for the class library. All book borrowings for students as well as parents will start from the next week.

We will be starting the Star Reading Test from Year 6-4 from Sunday. They will be issued their AR folders and can start with their AR tests soon after. Following the same please ensure that the students have their AR folders and books with them when they come for an AR test. No student will be allowed to take a test if they do not bring their log sheets folders and books. Also please keep in mind that the library timings for students is until the end of school day so they have to finish talking their tests and borrowing their book by then.

It is also mandatory that the students bring their library bags on their respective library days as we are unable to issue any new books unless student have their library bags.

Parents are also welcome have free membership of our library and borrow books

For any further information please feel free to share your feedback with us at [email protected] or visit us at the library after school. We are open for parents from 14.20 until 14.45 from Sunday through Wednesdays.

MUSIC NEWS:

It has been a fun and exciting return to music for the children of Al Muna this week. As well as having lots of new faces in our music classes, we also have a new music room! We are now located in a newly renovated and spacious room upstairs off the Year 6 area. We have been settling in well into our new surroundings, discussing the rules and routines that are important in music class. The children revisited the fundamental concepts of beat and rhythm with fun new games, activities and songs.

FS2 practiced ‘feeling the beat’ to Bhangra music, a style originating in India and Pakistan. Key stage One children learned the names of new percussion instruments and practiced playing them steadily as I accompanied on the guitar. They also learned a new song which helped them to internalise words in their heads as they sang. Key Stage Two children revisited both beat and rhythm, reinforcing the difference between the two. They explored beat interestingly through the use of

basketballs! They used their bodies and boomwhackers to practice rhythm patterns as a whole class.

What a busy and productive first week we have all had in Year 1!The children have been able to understand the Year 1 routines and procedures that we have introduced so far. They have a lot to learn and there are many new skills they will be introduced to and will practise. We have worked in small groups and have learned to collaborate and share ideas. We have practised communicating with one another and sharing our feelings – both positive and negative – in a productive and positive way. We are all learning to work as part of a team and to support one another so that we can all be our best.

NEWS IN YEAR GROUPS

YEAR 1 AND YEAR 2

YEAR 1:We have learned about our learning environment and how it works. The children are beginning to understand how to use the shared area too. We have discussed our classroom rules and we have spoken about why it is important to have these rules. We are practicing our counting in 1’s, 2’s, 5’s and 10’s and we are learning more about numbers between 1 and 10. The children are learning to use mathematical vocabulary to describe numbers.

Well done Year 1 for a great start to the new school year. We are all very proud

YEAR 2:What a fantastic and busy first week of learning we have all been enjoying in Year 2! Everyone (even me!) has been working really hard to get back into the routine of school life and getting to know new teachers in Year 2. They have been looking at their new learning environment shared with Year -1 within Key Stage One and exploring these areas of learning.

The children have looked at the classroom rules and have discussed why it is important to have them- I was

of you and what you have achieved so far. We look forward to getting to know you all even more as the year progresses. If you would like to be a class representative or a helping hand during our Guided Reading lessons, please contact your child’s class teacher.

Please also remember to send a water bottle and school hat to school every day. The bottle, hat and all school clothing should be clearly labelled.

amazed by their mature ideas. We have also been busy writing about our own `Scoop of the Summer`, explaining what we have done within the summer break. Welcome back! We hope that you all have a very enjoyable summer break and are ready for the new school year. This week we have all gotten to know each other and started our `Year of Zayed` project! Year 5 have settled in brilliantly and have already written a recount of their summer holidays in English. They have planned out their recount and presented it in a neat and tidy manner. In maths, we have been playing multiplication, addition, subtraction and division games. Mr. Dyke and Ms. Khasha started a murder mystery maths task and Mr. Tormey started a maths mission based around the summer holidays. We have completed some excellent pieces of art based around our first, enquiry question. They were out of this world!

Next week, in English we will be covering work around persuasive arguments. In maths, they will be using place value and rounding off numbers. We will be looking at numbers up to tens of thousands and even a million! We will be getting the children to find real life examples of where they see these numbers in their everyday lives. In science, we will be learning about the planets

Wow, what a wonderful start to the year we have had this week. In true Al Muna fashion, Year 6 have had an amazing start to the year! We spent this week getting settled into daily routines, meeting new friends, catching up on all the summer adventures and adapting to our role as the oldest children in the school. The children have demonstrated a real maturity that comes with being in Year 6 and are committed to hard work, becoming role models to the rest of the school.

This week Mr. Pearce spoke to us about the Year 6 leadership programme. The children showed great interest in this, something which will require commitment, trust and reliability. Let’s hope we can meet this challenge!Year 6 has started in a very positive way, long may this continue!
