So now I introduce a billet that works by itself! After it is folded it opens out by itself like a

    'Lotus Blossom! '

Please examine the gimmick in the envelope that haswhite paper on one side and a glassine film on the other. I haveleft this gimmick as is so that you can see how it is put together. If this gimmick is folded in half it will open out when released!

Play with it awhile but only fold it in one direction insteadof two ways. After you understand the principle, use rubber cementand cement a piece of white paper on the exposed side where thefilm shows. When the cement dries, trim off the edges slightlyand now the gimmick will look like a piece of card, like thematerial you use in billets.

You can now use this gimmick as a billet by having some onewrite a message on it and then turning the card writing-sidedown. When you pick it up, do not look at it but hold it overyour head and fold it two times in one direction only. (see Fig. J)

Then throw it into a box but do not look into the box. Justwalk away and get your crystal baIlor a glass of water and as youhold the baIlor glass over the box, pretending you are lookingfor images, you will get a good look at the message on the nowopened billet!

    Now for the details --

MAKING THE wecus LEGACY BILLETS. You will need some polyethy-lene film, 6 mil in thickness (.006 of an inch). Do not use any-thing thinner 0 This material is sold in paint stores and somehardware departments. For a few dollars you will get a roll thatwill last you a lifetime and some left over.

Cut some pieces of the film is sizes2! by J inches. Then apply cement to theedges of two pieces as shown by the dia-gonal lines in Fig. 1. You must use a cementthat will work with polyethylene. I use acement labeled 'Contact Cement' by Duro. This cement can be used on rubber and leather.

The film will curl a bit after thecement is applied. Let it dry as per theinstructions (about 10 minutesJand then putthe two pieces together carefully aligned BUT they do not have tobe aligned perfectly. Place the pieces under a press till the cementtakes. I use two pieces of lumber and some clamps.

When ready, cement white paper on both sides with rubbercement and then trim the gimmick so that it resembles a piece ofcard.

What you make is actually a small pocket of film that issealed on all four sides. There should not be any air bubbles in-side the pocket. Your prepared billet now has hidden powersl Ithas a memory I

HANDLING THE BILLETa Give the VIP a No. 2 pencilor a ball-point pen to write with. He can write awhole question that covers the whole cardS Afterhe finishes tell him to turn the card writing-sidedown so that no one can see the messageS

Tell the audience that you are going to pickup the card and fold it and to please watch youand notice that you never look at the card. Imust touch the card with my finger tips to getthe necessary vibrations, you say.

So pick up the card and hold it over yourhead so that it is visible to all, openly fold thecard once as shown in Fig. 2.

Then fold it a second time in the same direc-tion as in Fig. J. The card is slightly rounded likea cigar but to the audience it simply looks like afolded card. .

Hold the card in the air as in Fig. 4. as youpatter. Then place it inside a cigar box or whathave you but place it so that side "X" as shown inFig. J is downwards and touching the bottom of thebox.

Never look at the billet or inside the boxwhile handling it. To the audience it just looksas though you threw it into the box, but actual-ly you place it in the box gently.

The billet will open up as soon as yourelease it.

The billet must also be marked with asecret 'dot' as shown in Fig. J, so that youwill know which is the top of the billet. Thatway the billet will open right-side up so thatthe message is readible.

All is now ready for the reading which youdo in the pretext of doing something else.

That, Gentlemen, is the gist of the idea. There are many fine points for working with thisprinciple and I will detail some here. You willno doubt come up with other ideas in handling.

    ~he 8c~elt 8 CPod,iul#l,;EFFECT. On the seer's table is a scryer's

crystal ball on a small podium.A sitter is asked to write out his most im-

portant question and then to turn the card writingside down.

The seer then takes the card and folds itand then removes the crystal and drops the foldedcard under the velvet cloth that covers the po-dium. The crystal ball is then replaced and theseer looking into the crystal divines the thoughtand answers the question.

Fig. 5 gives the solution. The podium isabout four inches high and J inches square. TheCrystal ball is a 4 inch diameter ball. The po-dium has no top to it so that the crystal ballcan nest in it. Fig. 5B.

After the sitter finishes his writing, theseer removes the crystal ball and the velveteencloth. After the billet is dropped into thepodium, the cloth is replaced but so that theback is higher in order to expose the nowopen billet as in Fig. 5C

A Wocus Legacy billet is used of courseand it is marked with a pencil dot as in Fig.J in order to place it correctly inside thepodium.

The best presentaion is to simply take thebillet, fold it and drop it into the podiumquickly without any farther ado and then do thereading. This will hit the sitter between theeyes o

NOTE. The back window shown in Fig. 5Bneed not be as big as shown. A 2 inch high .opening will do.

YOUR CRYSTAL BALL. (MF) You may be able to bUy a 4 inch crystalball today for about $100. But some crystal balls sell for as hibhas $20~000. Your crystal ball is like a fine jewel. A flawless andnear perfect (spherically) ball is as expensive as any preciousjewel. They also go up in price with the years. Most crystal ballscome out of Quartz crystal and come from Czechoslovakia.

So insure your ball for a few thousand dollars and tell yoursitter about it.

NOTE. The Wocus billet can of course be re-used simply by usinga pencil for the writing or using Erasable Bond paper.

If the 'billet kings' of the past were alive today they wouldprobably handle the Wocus billet as follows.

If you can palm a playing card undetectedly, you can do themove described here.

First get a prepared billet that measures 2 by 2 inches. After the VIP writes his thoughts on it, fold it from the bottomup in thirds~ as shown in Fig. 6, A and B.

Then hold it between the fingers as shown in Fig. 4and then put it to your temple and then take itas shown in Fig. 7 and place it against the templeof the VIP. As you do that stick the first fingerof the right hand (assuming you are right-handed)between the folds and with the help of the VIP'stemple push the billet into your fingers and out ofsight. Let the billet open out as you release thepressure of the thumb. The thumb may also help inopening the billet. Get a quick glace at the messageand then look away, crumple the billet in your handand pocket it. Get a slate and chalk and read hismind!

You must practice these moves several timesbefore presenting it. The idea is to clip the topof the billet between the first and second fingersand let the billet open out downwards, while thefour fingers and palm cover the move.

(SMP) There is nothing wrong with you foldingthe billet. Many persons in your audience ~~~~resent taking orders from you. I well re- .... -~.member the time when I told the editor of ~ :a newspaper to open the prediction box. Shesaid to me, "You open it. Why should I open it?"So I open it and had an easy time of it and gotheadlines for it. Some spectator even refuse to takepart in the show or get out of their seats. So if you fold thebillet for them, you are saving them the effort.

But you must convince them that you never look at the billeteven after it is folded. While you are holding the open billetagainst the VIP's temple you glance at it in the pretext oflooking into his eyes!

T.A. Waters, aptly put it that billets are psychologicallyinvisible (Script) I

Once the billet is folded and then crumpled and pocketed itbecomes non-existent as from then on you are going to read minds!

Since you are still 'fishing' for vibs, the audience assumesthat you do not know the thought yet until you write it on yourslate!

    _1~_""l,

The Wocus Legacy billet can be used as a prediction pellet! It will not work with the 'key' boxes due to the pressure exertedby the billet inside the key. The pressure will slow down the oper-ation and cause failure, BUT it works well with.

Nelson's Prediction Pen. This item was sold by Bob Nelson ofColumbus Ohio and some are still available. The pen takes a bigbillet. So the Wocus billet can be rolled as in Fig. J and stuckinto the pen.

A good way to present the effect is to seal the openingin a small bottle and then break the seal with the pen, depositingthe billet in the act of trying to take it out. In the meantimethe billet has expanded so now you will have to either take thebillet out with a pair of tweezers or break the bottle with ahammer! Use an opaque bottle.

~Iu Sp,A.Lt .9",,, 'Bottle ..EFFECT. After the sitter writes his

question on a piece of card, the psychictakes the slip and rolls it and sticks itinto an ink bottle. The question is thendivined and answered.

Fig, 8, reveals the method. The bottleis painted with jet black paint on all sidesand the bottom except for the back sidewhich is transparent. However, when thepsychic removes the bottle from his deskdrawer, he flashes it and it appears to bepainted on all sides.

The billet must be inserted into thebottle so that side "X" as in Fig. J is Fig. 8facing the front of the bottle. That waythe billet will open out right-side to the back and exposing themessage as in Fig. 8.

This bottle you should not break as it has taken you sometrouble to prepare. The billet is taken out with a pair of Tweezersand rolled up in the act so that the billet looks the same aswhen it went it.

Now, I ask you, what mortal in his right mind is going tobelieve that the rolled billet blossomed out to reveal the secretmessage? Besides they will know that the bottle is painted blackon all sides!

  • 7THE WOCUS LEGACY AN AL MANN EX.CLUSlVE

On JUly 10th, 1982, Gary Lee Williams of White Plains, N.Y.phoned to say that Tr-Id was out-of-this-world. I was working onThe Wocus Legacy and let him in on the secret. Straight away heput his mind to it and called back four hours later to say thathe could do the "Lotus Move" with an unprepared piece of paper!!!

He then wrote a letter with all his ideas on it (July 16th)and these ideas are incorporated in "Wocus II."

If the following instructions are followed, you will findthat the "Lotus Move" works everytime.

THE PAPER. Although any kind of soft paper can be used, itis best to use opaque paper. Red or blue paper. This will obviatethe thought of transparency.

Use fieces of paper the same size as the billets you are usedto. Say 22 by Jt inches square.

Fold the paper in half and 'break' the fold by folding thepaper back and force. This will assist greatly in the move. Alsoif you wish you can fold the paper into quarters and 'break" thequarter folds also. But actually only the first fold is important.

    Fig. 9

THE GIMMICK. Use a single thickness of polyethylene film,6 mil thick. (see sample in envelope).

Cut the film smaller than the billet. It can be round orsquare. Also cut a small piece out of the center as shown inFig. 9

I prefer the square piece. The hole in the center of the film

serves several purposes. First you can tellwhere the center is by feeling it with yourfinger-tips. Secondly it lessens the frictionof the gimmick after it is folded intoquarters. This friction sometimes causesthe gimmick to slip out a bit.

Thirdly, the hole in the center avoidsa 'break' after the gimmick is folded intoquarters. Since the film has a 'memory' and atendency to open out, a break will slow this action.

THE PRESENTATION. After the VIP writes his thoughts, he isinstructed to turn the slip writing-side down.

You have the film gimmick palmed in your left hand. So youpick up the message paper and place it writing-side down over thegimmick and then cover the paper with your right hand and placeyour hands to your head to get the 'vibs.'

Then without looking at your hands, fold the paper downwardsand over the gimmick, and then into quarters. Now -l~ you throw thisfolded paper into the box, it will open out to reveal the message!

  • THE WOCUS LEGACY

    WOCUS II cont. ...

    8AN AL MANN EX.CLUSIVE

NOTE, Never put a break in the film. This will only programthe memory of the film so that it will stay folded at the break .

So when you fold the billet into quarters, DO NOT make thefolds hard, but fold it over gently so that the folds are actuallyrounded instead of flat.

~he. CU)ODU.8 Ce",telt*teo,,/f." If the paper is twice as largeas the gimmick, you can do the Wocus Center-Tear. After you foldthe paper into quarters with the gimmick inside, hold it to yourtemple and notify the audience that you received the thoughtl thentear the paper up as you do with the conventional center-teartechnique. Steal back the folded center piece and then tear upthe rest into tiny bits and throw everything into a basket orwhat-have-you, and show your hands otherwise empty---.

Do not look into the basket until you pick up a clip-boardfor example and start to draw your impressions. You can see theopen center-piece as you look over the left side of the clipboard(or the right side).

    ~hc, ~CLel()t ~O-" J.1illfLCee:Fig. 10 explains the miracle. The Wocus II

billet is folded into quarters and droppedinto the ballot box through the slot. Thebillet opens up and reveals the message. Theonly problem is that you must practice to seehow you must insert the folded billet in orderfor it to open right-side up.

The back door in the Ballot box can becovered by a swinging secret door. Since the Fig. 10box has a bottom, that should not be hard to do.

The box can also be made out of a card-board candy box.

Since the Box has a back door, you can pick up the box~der any pretext, tilt it back towards your lap and let the

b~llet fallout. You can then read it at leisure and then returnit to the box if necessaryl

I~ an e~ergency you can even use a paper bag. Simply cutout a w~ndow ~n the back. Drop the billet into the bag, shake itor whatever and glimpse the message! The bag and all can then betorn up and thrown away!

Making the billet open up right-side-up is quite easy. Justplace a mark on the back side upperright hand. Then fold the billetso that the mark is on the outside of the folded billet and insertthe billet into the box with the mark away from you!

    AN AL MANN EX.CLUSIVE

Well, Gentlemen, that is all I can tell you about the "WocusLegacy." But I have a feeling that there has got to be more to itthan that. No doubt that something more will develope later

And if you do not think that the information given here isworth more than the price paid for it, perhaps you are not wellversed in billet work of in the art of the Mentalist.

I for one do not want to go back to doing the Mutus-Nomen-Debit-Cocis card trick and palming it off as mindreading, althoughI admit that laymen love the trick.

GlJt:Lmpilte t1hO~lttd IA person is told to write down her

thoughts on a piece of paper and then toconcentrate on the thought. She is then toldto erase her thoughts from the paper.

The same paper is passed to another person whois also told to write down her thoughts and then tofold the paper twice.

The Mentalist takes the folded slip and holding it at hisfingertips divines the first thought that was erased and thendestroys the paper and divines the second thought!

The reader may already have a solution for this effect. ButI am sure you will agree that the plot is intrigueing.

When "The Donovon Papers" was released, many subscribers wroteto ask what kind of paper was recommended. Looking into the AME filesI found the ideal paper. It is Erasable Bond Typewriter paper,Medium weight. This is sold in stationery stores and is made byseveral companies. As expected some is better than others.

This paper has amazing qualities! You can type on it or writeon it even with a china marker and the writing can be easily erasedwith an ordinary eraser.

You can even write on it with ink and it will erase. But let'snot go that far. In our tests we will use a no. 2 pencil.

Together with the erasable bond paper, I found the secret ofthe Vampire Thoughts! Here it is, in print for the first time!

SECRET AND PRESENTATION, The secret is quite simple. It isthe patter and the plot that will intrigue your audience.

The first person gets the piece of paper and an impressiongimmick. Here I recommend the gimmick that is used in the JupiterEffect in "Through A Wall, Mistily.1I But you may have your ownfavorite.

After the secret message is written, take back the gimmick asyou tell the person to look at her writing and to concentrate onher thought. She is next told to erase her thought from the paper

with the eraser on the back of her pencil and to pass the slip ofpaper and the pencil to another person. The second person is toldto write her thoughts on the slip of paper as you turn your backfor an instant and glimpse the impression of the first person'sthought I The second person next folds the billet.

You take the billet at your fingertips and without lookingat it place it to your temple and divine the first thought, theone that was erasedl to the amazement of everyone.

During the ensueing amazement, tear up the slip of paper anddiscard it 0- - (you have just done your favorite center-tear

method )and then reveal the second thought.NOTE, If you know the secret of The Donovon Papers you will

have no need to tear up the folded slipl

fJAe .M.n,8 *4 ~ c.A1fA.6tte~ :Here is another intrigueing plot that may dumbfound your

audience. You inform the audience that you are going to attempta most difficult and unique test.

"You have all heard of thought reading, well I am going totry something different. You may call it Memory readingI "

METHOD, The method used here is exactly as the method usedin "Vampire Thoughts," except that you do it with a single person.

Tell a person to think of a thought or question and towrite it down on a slip of paper. He is then to concentrate on'itand then to erase it from the paper and to think of somethingelse. He is instructed to write his thought again on the same slipof paper.

Mentalist takes the paper and folds it and places the slipto his temple. He then destroys the piece of paper and discardsthe pieces, some of which drop to the floor.

Mentalist tells the person to please concentrate on histhought while Mentalist writes on a slate.

Say that the second thought was "Son" and that the person isthinking about it.

"I have received an impression and I have chalked it on thisslate which I will show you shortly. Please tell us, for the bene-fit of the audience the exact thought you had in your mind."

Spectator replies "Sonl""That is what you were thinking about, Correct?" "Yesl""You were not thinking of anything else'? "NOI"

"Ladies and Gentleman p while this person was thinking ofhis Son, I was attempting to read, not his thought but his memory! His memory had a clear record of the first question in his mind I "

"Will you please tell the audience what your first questionwas. The one that you wrote down first and then erased"

"My questions was, 'When will I sell my house?"

Mentalist turns his slate around and shows the same questionchalked on it!

NOTES a The first question was gotten from the impressiongimmick. The second thought can be gotten via the center tear butas you can see it is not at all necessary.

The patter for this effect can be most convincing since yousay that your subconscious mind records everything that you haveever read, seen, touched, tasted or smelled. In fact everythingyour senses feel! is recorded in your memory and can be re-

    called.
