AIRPORT CLASSIFICATIONS:
ICAO(International Civil Aviation Organization) classified the airports
into two categories:
1. A-E which indicates basic runway length, width of the runway
pavement and maximum longitudinal grade.

The airport surveys can be grouped in the followingseven categories:
1. Approach zone survey.
2. Drainage survey.
3. Meteorological survey.4. Natural recourses survey.
5. Soil survey.
6. Topographical survey.
7. Traffic survey.

DRAWINGS TO BE PREPARED:
Following the details of surveys conducted at alternative sites,
the most favorable site for the airport is selected and then the
following drawings are prepared:
1. Drainage plan
2. Grading plan
3. Lighting plan
4. Master Plan
5. Obstruction Plan
6. Paving plan
7. Topographic plan

AIRPORT SITE SELECTION:
Following are the factors which influence the location of
airport :
Atmospheric and meteorological conditions.
Availability of land for expansion.
Availability of utilities.
Development of the surrounding area.
Economy of construction.
Ground Accessibility.
Presence of other airports.
Regional plan.
Soil characteristics.
Topography.
Use of airport.

AIRPORT LAYOUTS:
Following are the characteristics of a well planned airport layout:
It grants maximum functional efficiency with the minimum
utilization of the space.
It has adequate space for the loading aprons.
It has sufficient terminal building facilities.
It provides excellent control tower visibility.
The cost of construction is minimum
The operations of landing, taxing and take off of the aircraft are
carried out smoothly without interfering with each other.
The overall arrangement of the components is such that the
future expansion is easily permitted.
The runway length and approaches are safe.
The taxiway distances b/w the loading apron and the runway
ends are minimum.
