History Present Airport is development of Air Strip built by

British during world war II (1942-43).

This site was chosen for its inherent advantage

of being center of Indian sub-continent.

Prince Philip landed on this Air Strip in 1984 to

have a feel of presence of Royal Air Force.

Old remains of British structure can still be seen

in vicinity of Airport.

Geography Longitude - 80o18’ E and Latitude - 21o32’ N.

Airport is located at Birsi village of Gondia,

district in the state of Maharashtra, 16 Kms from

Gondia Railway Station.

Gondia is on Howrah-Mumbai Railway Route.

AAI took over the Runway Strip/Terminal Buildingfrom MIDC on 31st Dec. 2005

AAI Board of Directors meeting dated 14.11.2005,16.03.2006 accorded approval for infrastructuredevelopment work at Birsi Airport.

Indian parliament accorded approval forestablishment of NFTI at Birsi Airport on 07.11.2007,an amount of Rs 108.07 crores was sanctioned toundertake infrastructure development of Birsi Airport.

Designed with Space Frame Structure, Spider Glazing,

Kalzip roofing along with bull nosing.

Total plinth area : 900 Sqm.

Air Traffic Services are housed in ATS Complex.

Area 2900 Sqm.

The height of control tower

is 28 m. above ground level

Gondia Airport has world class Air Traffic Control Tower with VHF,

NDB, DVOR, DME & ILS(on commissioning phase).

Airport is equipped with modern CNS/ATM facilities (VHF, NDB, DVOR,

DME & ILS)

Airport caters to Flying Training requirements being a dedicated

training airport.

Regular watch is provided from 0800 hrs. to 1800 hrs (six days a week).

Airport is well equipped with Night Landing Facilities.

There are 220 Aircraft movements (average/per day) of NFTI / IGRUA

(winter operations)

Extension of Apron by another 65X84 Mtrs and cost Rs 1 Crore.

Departure Terminal 1305 Sqm of parameter and Rs. 10 Crores.

The objective is to provide ab-initio training for

Commercial Pilot License Member of CAE Global

Academy, a network of 10 international flight

NFTI operates the most modern training aircraft

Currently 8 Diamond DA-40 Single Engine

Glass Cockpit aircraft

1 DA-42 (Multi-Engine)

One DA-40 and One DA-42 Flight Navigation

Procedure Trainer is already in operation

Commercial Pilot’s License course consists of

200 hours flight training and comprehensive

theoretical classes.

The total duration of the course is 14 months

The state-of-art Airport Facilities at Gondia supports winter operations of

Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy, because of weather &

geographical advantages. Management and Operations are presently

being entrusted to Cae inc., Canada.

Courses Planned in NIATM

To cater to the current volume of air traffic , 2500 ATCOs

are required. Present strength is around 1800.

To cater to the increased intake of JE (ATC) , training has

been initiated at NIATM, Gondia w.e.f 16-08-2010.

The first batch of JET (ATC) of 41 Trainees have

graduated from the institute on 02-02-2011.
