Introduction

Arresterbarrierisasysteminstalledattheendoftherunwaytostoptheforwardmovementofanaircraftovershootingtherunway,incaseofarejectedtakeofforemergencylanding,withminimaldamagetoaircraftorinjurytothecrew.Availabilityofthesystemis,therefore,anessentialrequirementforflyingoperations.

IndianAirForce(IAF)hasarresterbarrieratalloftheirbasesforaircraftsupto20.4tonmass(MiG,Jaguar,Mirage,Kiran,etc).TheinductionofSU-30aircraftinIAFnecessitatedtheneedofarrestorbarriersfor40tonclassaircraftsincetheexistingbarrierscannotbeusedformorethan20.4tonclassaircraft.

JohnGaltInternational(JGI),incollaborationwithIndia’sDefenseResearchDevelopmentOrganization(DRDO)hassuccessfullydevelopedarrestorbarriersforboth20.4ton&40tonclassaircraft.

JGIhassuccessfullyinstalled50ArresterBarriersacrossIndia.Besidesthis,JGIhasalsore-installed15olderbarriers,aftercriticalupgradationofsystems.

ThebarrierisraisedwiththehelpofstanchionsystemonacommandreceivedthroughremotecontrollocatedinATCtower,whenemergencyarrestingofanaircraftisrequired.Asthenetenvelopestheaircraft,thepullexertedonthenetreleasesthenetbottomfromthenetanchorsandbreakstheshearpinsintheshear-offcouplings,releasingthenettopfromthesuspensionsystem.Thepurchasetapesattachedtothenetendloopsarepulledthroughthefair-leadtubespayingoutthetwoenergyabsorbertapedrums,therebyturningtherotaryhydraulicbrakes.Thisactiongeneratesauniformbrakingforce,whichsmoothlydeceleratestheaircrafttoasafestop.Theenergyabsorption(max.13.5millionJoules)inthissystemisbasedonwatertwistertechnology.Thisarresterbarriersystemcanarrestthefighteraircraftof20tonto40tonataspeedof160knots.Theaircraftstopsafterarunoutdistanceof270mafterengagementinthesystem.Clearanceforservice-useofbarrierhasbeenaccordedbyCentreforMilitaryAirworthiness&Certification.
