HEATING SYSTEM FOR INFRARED THERMOGRAPHY ANALYSIS Application to water detectionFor Airbus Aircraft Elevators
Since now more than ten years, GMI develops thermal equipment for infra -red applications de-voted to water detection in composite strucrtures.Special Kits have been produced to adapt to specific configurations in particular for Airbus ele-vator parts.For this specific application, GMi makes available ready to use three families of complete so-lution kits, for AIRBUS :
• A340, A330
• A300
• A320
Each kit is constituted of two sub-kits:
- A Thermal Kit of Heating Blankets adapted to the process and to the shape and dimensions of the elevator
- A Temperature and process Controller
NOTE : A transformer Kit is proposed to adapt the above system designed for 220 Voltspowering to 120 Volts AC input.
Each equipment is described below successively.

1 THERMAL KITS
For this specific process, a series of heating mats has been designed appropriately.
These blankets have two main particularities:
- They are cut to cover exactly and integrally the upper skin of the elevator. Placed side by side they fit completely and perfectly all the surface to be analysed.
- They have a power design and an electric scheme to provide the necessary temperature control and heat performances with regard of the constraints of the infra red thermal imaging process.

- The system has been studied so that it is possible to analyse the two skins of the elevator box by heating only the upper skin.
- Note also that the kit is conceived for right and left elevator application.
1-1 DESIGN
1-1.1 NUMBER OF BLANKETS
The number of blankets depends of the elevator type.
1-1.2 CONSTRUCTION
The heating mat is built with internal temperature sensors so that the operator has not to care about the positioning of any thermocouple or other sensor. Connection to the controller is through appropriate cables. Connectors are mounted at the end of reinforced long tabs.
The heating mats are designed to be used on left and right elevators.
The heating process has been set up so that it is only necessary to heat the upper closing sand-wich panel of the elevator to analyse with the camera the presence of water in the upper panel as well as in the lower one.

1-1.3 PRESENTATION & DELIVERY
1-1-3.1CONTAINER
The blankets are delivered in a case designed for practical and easy storage. The case is ap-propriate for safe worldwide transportation.Rolls allow easy dragging of the case to the field.

2 CONTROLLER KIT
2-1 PRESENTATION
The controller kit has been designed specifically and exclusively for handling the process with the thermal blanket kits above.It is important to note that the controller is compatible with all three thermal kits described in the previous chapter.
2-2 FUNCTIONS - PUSH BUTTON OPERATIONS
The process controls is built to control simultaneously 2 heating mats.
The process is straightforward for the operator. He has just to connect the two mats through their cables and just to press a start switch to launch the heating cycle. The process tempera-ture profile and all safety features are pre-registered for a complete automated process.
The Console offers a nice and easy working panel for the operator. It can be safely positioned on a table or on ground near the elevator.
a. Programming: the program has been decided with Airbus; it is already memorized. The op-erator has just to press a start button to launch a cycle if all connection conditions are satis-fied
b. Temperature measurement: here the operator has not to care about thermocouple place-ment; the sensors are already integrated inside the blankets; they connect to the controllerthrough a specific cable. Two other plugs are offered for a free measurement of other loca-tion temperatures if needed.
c. Cycle Run. The cycle is controlled in set-point and duration according to a protocol studiedin order to obtain optimum heat transfer performances in the elevator.
d. Displays and Lights: all information are displayed through panels and light mimics. The op-erator is informed by a buzzer and a time display when he can start the camera analysis.
e. The procedure has been specifically studied for an optimization of the duration of the oper-ations.

The console is delivered with all necessary accessories to connect and to power. It is packed in a sturdy transportation case.

3 TRANSFORMER KIT
3-1 PRESENTATION
The Blanket kit has been designed for 220 Volts Monophase AC powering.In case of 120 Volts environment, one can use a transformer specifically designed.This transformer connects on one side to the power source and to the controller that itself drives the blanket resistance.
3-2 SPECIFICATIONS
- Input: 120 Volts monophase - 30 Amps
-Output: 220 Volts monophase - 16 Amps
3-3 CASE
The transformer is integrated into a console with a pane for safe connections. For easy transportation to the field, a sturdy case has been designed with rolls.
