Aims of SMILE Project

For pupils:

• To improve attitudes to self and school through

development of emotional literacy

• Decrease disruptive behaviour in the classroom

• Provide a more supportive learning environment

• Improve pupils’ interpersonal skills

• Reduce exclusions and/or the number of pupils leaving

education early

• Increase academic success

Aims of SMILE Project

For Adults:

• To know behaviour can be “taught not caught”

• To have a greater understanding of the value of helping all children to understand their own emotions and the emotions of others in their school

• To have an understanding of how to help all children to more successfully manage their emotions

• To plan activities for children aged 3 years to 11 years which explicitly teaches emotional literacy

• To include activities which meet the needs of pupils with special needs in mainstream and special provision to support Inclusive practice

Project Participants

• 2 Year National Agency Erasmus + project, involving pupils, staff, parents and

Governors in all 5 countries

Age – 3 years – 11 years, including children with SEN in mainstream schools and

a group of children Significant Learning Difficulties in a Special Provision within the

UK school

Project Themes

7 Emotion related themes were explicitly explored in all 5 project schools over the two years:

2. Hopes, Dreams & Joy

3. Love & Friendship

4. Self-esteem

5. Empathy

6. Understanding Anger

7. Understanding Sadness

Evidence Gathering and Wider Dissemination

• Participating pupils took part in assessments at start

and end of the project

• Evidence included: Floor Books, Individual books,

displays, photographs, SMILE Blog page, the e-

twinning platform, parental feedback , staff surveys ,

pupil feedback

• Intellectual outputs included a SMILE Project

Evaluation Report , a teaching Manual and an

Emotions Pictionary available on e-twinning

Lesson Plan Manual Available on e- twinning

Impact so far …• A refreshed approach to the teaching of PSCHE

• Improved pupil attitudes to school, particularly those with SEN related to EBD

• Increased staff confidence and motivation in the teaching of emotional literacy

• Invaluable exchanges of ideas and practice

• Improved cultural understanding and ongoing links

• Increased family involvement in the teaching of PSCHE

• Invitations to disseminate project more widely
