Business Events Week highlights

A week to remember

Melbourne will host Australia’s inaugural Business Events Week from February 25 to March 1, organised by the Melbourne Convention + Visitors Bureau (MCVB).

Making the announcement late last year, Victoria’s Minister for Tourism and Major Events, Louise Asher, said Business Events Week will be a week-long program of activities designed to showcase the value of business events.

“Business events generate extensive economic wealth for the local, state and national economy. In Victoria alone, business events inject more than $1.2 billion annually,” she said.

“Over the next two years Melbourne will host in excess of seven of the world’s largest and most prestigious conferences including the 22nd World diabetes Conference in 2013 and the International AIdS Conference in 2014, both of which will bring thousands of delegates to Victoria from all over the world and put our city firmly in the international spotlight.

“In May this year [2012], the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA) recognised Melbourne as Australia’s number one city for conferences and congresses in its annual Country

and City Ranking Report, so it is fitting our city is taking the lead on driving this initiative which we hope will become a national event in the coming years.”

The inaugural Business Events Week will be centred on this year’s Asia-Pacific Incentives & Meetings Expo (AIME), an event which has been drawing Australia’s business events community to Melbourne in its own right since its launch in 1993.

The idea for Business Events Week came out of a discussion by AIME’s advisory board, about how AIME, now in its 21st year, will continue to build on its position as Asia-Pacific’s

premier business events show, according to Karen Bolinger, chief executive officer of MCVB.

“We sat down and talked about how we want AIME to be positioned in the future, because it’s not just an Australian show, it’s an Asia-Pacific show and it has great credibility,” she said. “We have this amazing show, where the world comes to Australia to promote business events, so the question for us was why aren’t we utilising that to start talking about the economic impact that business events has across Australia?

“AIME is a trade show for the business events industry, but

we’d like to broaden that; to give the wider community a better understanding of what a business event is, and that it comes with employment and a lot of other things attached to it that people don’t always recognise, including the beyond tourism benefits.

“When I think about Melbourne, that’s about us tapping into the resources that exist in the city such as the Burnet Institute [Australia’s largest virology and communicable disease research institute], and showcasing these on an international platform.”

In addition to AIME, which will be held on February 26-27, highlights of the Business Events Week calendar include the annual ICCA Forum for young Professionals, aimed at professionals under 30, which will focus on new approaches and innovative case studies in the meetings industry; AIME CEO Summit, which will bring together chief executives from the global business events industry to discuss the latest trends and issues facing the industry; Saxton Ultimate Event Experience, an exciting two-hour session showcasing the talent and wisdom of 10 cutting edge presenters and entertainers; and an intensive business events educational session and guided tour of AIME for Victorian university and TAFE students.

A number of trade events relating to the aviation industry, to be held before the Avalon Airshow from March 1-3, will also be included on the schedule, demonstrating the value of business events to an industry such as aviation and aerospace.

A key partner in the initiative, Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre (MCEC), will be hosting not only a number of events related to AIME including a welcome lunch on Monday, February 25, for around 350 Hosted Buyers, but will also be opening its

doors to all-comers with its inaugural “Open Space” event on Thursday, February 28. The event will include a plenary session with influential business leaders, including AFL chief executive, Andrew demetriou; Aus Biotech chief operations officer, Glenn Cross; Victorian Employers’ Chamber of Commerce and Industry chief executive, Mark Stone; and Cisco Asia Pacific area, vice president, Les Williamson.

MCEC’s chief executive, Peter King, believes Business Events Week is destined to become a “national showcase for business events” in Australia.

“We struggle as an industry to define the contribution we make to the community from an intellectual capacity, but also an economic one,” he said. “Initiatives like this are great for us as an industry.”

King said MCEC’s participation in Business Events Week is about creating awareness of MCEC’s contribution to Melbourne as a whole.

“There are things like jobs for a start; we employ around 700-800 people on a regular basis. But there

are also all the other benefits – the hotels, the restaurants, the airports – that are very dependent on the business events that we bring in.

“There’s also a whole regional support story. We use around 70 boutique suppliers from right around Victoria for our food and wine offering. This allows us to showcase wonderful Victorian produce and puts a lot of these smaller suppliers into a stronger economic position to grow their businesses.

“One of the major things we’ll be doing [during Business Events Week] is offering behind-the-scenes access to the public. We’ll be inviting people we do business with around Melbourne and opening MCEC to anyone who wants to come and have a look. This is a world class facility but not a lot of people understand what we do here. By opening up our doors we can show people the benefits of the industry and what a great venue they have on their doorstep.”

Other organisations who have thrown their weight behind the Business Events Week initiative

include the Exhibition & Event Association of Australasia, Tourism and Transport Forum and the Committee for Economic development of Australia.

Bolinger is confident that both Business Events Week and AIME 2013 will be a success.

“We’re hoping that Business Events Week will communicate to a broader platform what business events add back to the economy, as well as the overall wellbeing of the city.”

icca youth forum on again The International Congress and Convention Association’s (ICCA) 2013 Forum for young Professionals is back again at this year’s AIME.

Running from February 24-25, the Forum targets young professionals under the age of 30 who are keen to boost their understanding of the global meetings industry.

“We leverage off the AIME trade show to develop a quality program using senior industry experts visiting Melbourne,” says Forum manager Elizabeth Rich. “The 2013 theme is ‘Revitalise your Thinking’ with a focus on new approaches and innovative case studies in the meetings industry.”

The Forum is free to staff of ICCA members. There are also limited spaces for non-members at a cost of $330. Visit www.aime.com.au for more information.

A highlight for many visitors to AIME every year is the expo’s education program, AIME Knowledge, which this year has doubled in size to offer two concurrent streams.

To ensure that the program meets the high standards set in previous years, AIME will once again partner with key industry associations including the International Special Events Society (ISES), International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA), Meetings & Events Australia (MEA), Professional Convention Management Association (PCMA), Associations Forum and the Professional Conference Organisers Association (PCO) to deliver the most relevant topics and insightful presenters.

With the business travel sector playing a more prominent role at this year’s AIME, the expo will also be partnering with the Association of Corporate Travel Executives (ACTE) to include additional business travel seminars.

AIME Knowledge also includes a number of personal development sessions with topics ranging from entrepreneurship, to reaching your potential to negotiation.

AIME Knowledge sessions are $55, or you can purchase an ”all access” pass for $175. Visit www.aime.com.au for more information. Book now to secure your place.

Spotlight on… Andrew SparksWhen motivational speaker and executive coach Andrew Sparks steps up to the podium on Wednesday, February 27, to speak about “Potentiability and a Life of Fulfillment”, he’ll be drawing on his own life experiences to reveal the secrets of fulfilling your full potential.

AIMe: you haven’t always had the lifestyle you lead now. How did you turn your life around?

Andrew sparks: Just four short years ago I was living a very destructive lifestyle which involved very heavy use of drugs, alcohol and violence. For me there wasn’t a lightbulb moment, or catalyst to change, but I knew I wanted to make a positive difference and I needed to take myself from the destructive environment I put myself in.

After a long learning curve back to how the rest of the “normal” world lives, today things are awesome. I get

AIME high with sensational speakersto work with some of the most amazing people, speaking with them, sharing my thoughts and coaching them so that they too can have the life of their dreams.

AIMe: What was it that led you to realise that your experiences could help other people?

As: After I had my head back above water, I realised that there are a lot of other people that were in the same boat, and that if I could break free of it, then so could they. When I found something that worked for me I really wanted to share it with others.

AIMe: What services does your company, Sparks Elite, offer and how can they change people’s lives?

As: I speak motivationally, run high-performance workshops and consult to a select group of individuals and companies. Sparks Elite also

has several other highly trained executive and life

coaches in the team, which is great. We also have a sporting element to our company with a running coach and triathlon coach. This way, we don’t just teach performance, we

live it too, which our clients love.

The backbone of what we do in every area of our coaching helps people get what they really want from their life – fulfilment. It could be a past trauma, a broken relationship, losing a few kilograms or making millions of dollars.

AIMe: does everyone have the potential to fulfil their dreams?

As: My personal belief is that we have unlimited potential and can achieve whatever we want. Mindset is our only limitation. If you are extremely determined to get what you want you can definitely have it, from any starting point.

AIMe: What are some of the strategies you employ to encourage people to achieve peak performance?

As: First of all you have to get clear on what you want, and really want it. Obviously goal setting is a major part in achieving anything in life. I tend to assess a situation and then set a goal that scares the heck out of people.

I’ve been critiqued by other coaches in the past for setting large goals for my clients. If they do come up a little short in the timeframe, the disappointment can be easily managed. What can’t be managed though is people looking back when they’re 80 years old and regretting they never attempted to reach for their potential. By then it’s too late.

AIMe: What’s the number one thing people will get out of attending your session at AIME?

As: I’d say inspiration and an action plan to achieve that. I’ll be sharing a simple strategy they can implement in any area of their lives to be successful.
