Two weeks ago, a New York Times investigation brought to light specific, well-documented
accusations of sexual harassment and sexual assault made by five women against Richard Meier,
FAIA - Pritzker Prize winner, AIA Gold Medalist, and member of the AIA College of Fellows. Within
ten days, the AIA New York City Chapter rescinded the 2018 design awards it had been poised to
present to Meier and to Peter Marino, FAIA, who has multiple pending and settled lawsuits in
which he is cited for sexual harassment and racist behavior.
The situations described in the New York Times coverage of Meier are abhorrent. And yet while
the details may have been surprising, the idea that Meier could have perpetrated such actions
seemed to surprise almost no one. This was an open secret within the profession.
Meier's behavior is on the more extreme end of the spectrum, but it's also not an anomaly. There
are innumerable, everyday instances of harassing and discriminatory behavior (based on gender,
race, ethnicity, religion, and more) in architecture firms, on construction sites, at office social
events, and at professional conferences. And throughout the nation, students too often witness
and experience harassing and discriminatory behavior involving their professors and guest
lecturers.
We, the Executive Committee of AIA Minnesota, are united in our conviction that all forms of
harassment and discrimination are unacceptable and cannot be tolerated. We will be bringing
forward to the AIA Minnesota Board of Directors specific recommendations for action related to
who is lifted up as admirable members of the profession, how accusations of misconduct will be
dealt with, what standards are set for leaders, and how risks will be proactively addressed. For
specific actions recommended, read more »

Interrupting Bias to Counter Harassment andDiscrimination: Twin Cities Sessions in April, GreaterMN this May/FallBiases are created and reinforced by our environments and experiences. Bias can be unconscious
or intentional and can be based on gender, race, ethnicity, income, physical ability, sexual
orientation and other "differences that make a difference." And these biases can manifest in the
form of harassment and discriminatory comments and behaviors.
Many of us witness biased behavior and feel paralyzed to respond; we're not comfortable, not
practiced, in recognizing, interrupting, or addressing bias when we see it happening around us.
The good news is that there are a variety of steps that you can take and ways to grow your
comfort in responding to bias.
This popular and well-received interactive workshop was offered in 2016 and will be offered
again four different times in April - April 16, 17, 20, and 27, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm (free of charge
with lunch provided) in Suite 512 at International Market Square, just a few floors up from the
AIA Minnesota office. In the session, we will utilize small and large group activities to explore
examples and to grow your comfort in speaking up when you encounter biased behavior.
Also, in an effort to grow industry-wide engagement on topics of bias, harassment and
discrimination, invitations to participate in these sessions will also be shared with ACEC-MN and
AGC-MN. Register now »

MINNESOTA DESIGN TEAM (MDT) COMMITTEE
WHAT IS YOUR DESIGN STORY? Architects who have been a part of the "team" over the last thirty-five years share their stories.
John Barbour, FAIA, Shelter Architects I heard about the Minnesota Design Team (originally called the
Governor's Design Team) through colleagues at work. It sounded
like a fun way to use my architectural skills to help with some real
issues, so I signed up for my first visit, to Embarrass, in spring
1988.
The community was extremely organized and took care of all of our
needs, from teaching us about their sauna customs to providing us
with a tour of the community and providing us with a place to work. Following our visit, they
pursued some of the options we developed and presented to them. One of the ideas was for
them to develop an organized national tour of their unique collection of Finnish-style log homes.
Within about two years, a story about the Embarrass Finnish home tours was on national
television. Learn more »
