The MarketWith 32.5 m ha of arable land and one-third of the worlds fertile black earth, Ukrainian agriculture has huge potential. In 2018, Ukraine attained a record harvest (70.1 m tons) and also the exports reached with 50.4 m tons a new record height. Agriculture has always been one of the major sectors of the Ukrainian economy – its share of the GDP amounts to approximately 14%.

However, due to the shortage of state-of-the-art equipment experts estimate that 5-6 m. tons are lost annually. The insufficient equipment of the industrial plants also affects the average yields in grain, sun flowers, rapeseed, sugar beets and potatoes with results way below the Western European level. The Ukrainian Government, thus, subsidizes livestock farms with 130 000 USD and agricultural machinery purchases with 32.7 Mio USD in 2019.

Livestock in Ukraine has been gaining more and more importance. The poultry sector driven by exports has been rapidly developing, especially since 2013, when Ukraine has started to export poultry and egg products in the EU. In 2018, exports of poultry products amounted to 330,000 tonns setting again a new record.

Fruits and vegetablesDue to the fertile black soil and favorable climatic conditions production of fruits and vegetables in Ukraine, especially in it southern regions, provides high potential. Uk-raine belongs to the Top 5 of the European apple producers and to the Top 10 of the most important producers of grapes and wine in Europe. In 2016, European importers’ demand for Ukrainian tomatoes grew rapidly – the total exports amounted to 17,100 tons from January-August 2016, 2.2 times as high as a year ago and the highest result ever.
