Northern India is a wonderful destination for adventurers interested in exploring the mountains, culture, history and spirituality of this fascinating region. We begin in Delhi, the capital of India, before flying up to Leh, the most important town in the Ladakh region. Nestled in the valley of the Indus River and surrounded by snow-covered fringes of the Himalayas, Leh has a distinct character that transports us back in time. A major trading point where caravans came in from the distant lands of Yarkand, Kashgar, Tibet, Kashmir as well as other regions of northern India, the market once bustled with activity. Today, Leh is a center of Tibeto-Buddhist culture and has only been open to travelers since 1974. While exploring the region, we’ll have many opportunities to visit local villages and learn about their way of life and dedication to their religion. We visit the gompas of the area, which are home to many ancient manuscripts, images of Buddha, icons, thangkas and stupas. We travel to Alchi to see the beautifully-preserved 900-year-old paintings and drive over the spectacular Khardung La Pass at 18,274 ft (5,570 m), the world’s highest. We return to Delhi and travel to Dharamsala by train. Set against the backdrop of the dramatic Dhauladhar Mountains, Dharamsala is perched on the high slopes in the upper reaches of Kangra Valley. Dharamsala is synonymous with the Tibetan government in exile and the home of Tibetan leader, the Dalai Lama. We have plenty of time to explore the colorful temples and gompas of the area, which reflect the culture of Tibet. We have also arranged for a Buddhist meditation class in order to learn first-hand about this ancient religion. We visit the impressive Golden Temple as well as the markets and sites of Amritsar. We return to Delhi for further sightseeing in the old and new cities before concluding this truly great adventure.

Kashgar, Samarkand and Khiva – ancient Silk Road cities that evoke images of exotic caravans traveling across deserts and over mountains, linking the worlds of east and west.

For over 1,000 years, it was the legendary Silk Road that provided adventurers and traders with a route from the mystique and wealth of China to the developing countries of Europe. ElderTreks’ Silk Road journey explores the old trading routes of northern Pakistan, northwestern China, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

We spend our first week in the mountains of northern Pakistan, including the beautiful Hunza Valley. Explore the Himalayas, Hindu Kush, Pamirs and Karakorams mountains, along the Karakoram Highway over the world’s highest paved border crossing – the Khunjerab Pass – into China. In Kashgar, visit the ancient market, where 100,000 Uyghurs gather to trade.

Crossing the mountainous beauty of Kyrgyzstan, we arrive in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, our transfer point to the historic city of Khiva – an open-air museum of central Asian architecture. In Bukhara and Samarkand, two of the best preserved Silk Road wonders, we see mosques, tombs and monuments that provide a majestic ending to this Silk Road journey.

The words of Alexander the Great, spoken more than 2,000 years ago, still ring true: “Everything I have heard about the beauty of Samarkand is true – except that it is even more beautiful than I could have imagined.”

Activity Level: 5+ Comfort Level: Hiking is at high elevation – 22 days at over 9,000 feet. Participants must be very fit. Many long and dusty drives.

Accommodations Most accommodation in guesthouses is very basic; shared rooms and shared bathrooms. 5 or more nights camping with no bathrooms. Single supplement not available all nights.

The spiritual draw of Tibet’s holy mountains has long been the inspiration for millions of Tibetans to make the harsh overland pilgrimage to Mt. Kailash and Mt. Everest.

Join our challenging hiking adventure to the rooftop of the world. This trip includes scenic drives on rough roads, long hikes at high elevation and several nights of camping. For Buddhists and Hindus, the circumambulation of Mt. Kailash is said to erase the sins of a lifetime. At 6,714 meters (22,022 ft) high, with its four sheer walls and snow-capped peak, it is an awe-inspiring site. A supremely sacred site of four religions and billions of people, Mt. Kailash is seen by only a few thousand pilgrims each year due to its extreme remote location in northwestern Tibet.

Mt. Everest, also known as Mount Chomolongma (Mother Goddess of the Universe in Tibetan), is the highest peak in the world, at 8,844 meters (29,017 ft). It has long been a holy pilgrimage for Tibetans, and more recently, travelers from all over the world.

Our journey is not just about these must-see destinations. This arduous adventure includes some of Tibet’s most famous attractions, including the impressive Potala Palace, the holy Jokhang Temple, Sera, Drepung and Tashilhunpo Monasteries and Khumbum Stupa.

Drive over high mountain passes and marvel at the brilliant blue waters of Yamdrok Lake. For many, a true highlight is the cultural encounters with nomadic Tibetans on their religious journey of enlightenment.

We invite you to take your own personal pilgrimage to a magical land filled with the highest peaks on earth, while encountering some of the world’s friendliest and most devout people.

Prayer flags flutter on wind-swept passes, snow-capped Himalayan peaks touch cobalt skies, plains of green barley and yellow canola shoulder treeless brown slopes and mountain monasteries echo the chants of monks. The sights and sounds of Tibet are fantastic and for many, magnetic.

Kathmandu is our rendezvous point, where we spend a day touring before taking a spectacular Himalayan flight to Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. To help us acclimatize, we leisurely explore Tsedang and the burial site of the ancient kings. On our way to Lhasa, we visit Tibet’s first monastery, Samye, on the shore of the braided channels of the Yarlung Tsampo, the world’s highest river. In Lhasa, we see the towering 1,000-room Potala, the former winter palace of the Dalai Lama.

We visit the religious sanctuaries of Sera, Drepung and the Jokhang, Tibet’s most religious structure. In the streets of Lhasa, we can walk with Tibetan pilgrims around one of the holiest paths in Tibet, the Barkhor.

The journey continues to Gyantse and Shigatse, via the 14,600-foot Karo La Pass, overlooking Yamdrok Lake far below. In Gyantse, the Khumbum Stupa is open for the curious who want to view its 1,000 Buddhas. In Shigatse, we wander through the buildings of Tashilhunpo Monastery and observe the beautiful paintings and funerary pagodas of former Panchen Lamas. A true highlight is our journey to Mount Everest Basecamp as we look up to the world’s highest peak. Leaving the plateau, we descend through the Himalayas. The land becomes greener as we head into the Kathmandu Valley, concluding one of the world’s great overland journeys. For combo trips, see page 124-125.

From here, we drive to the former hill station of Darjeeling, famous for its tea plantations, temperate climate and the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute. Views of Kanchenjunga (the world’s third highest mountain) and a visit to a tea plantation feature prominently during our days in Darjeeling. In Sikkim, a kingdom formerly closed to tourists, be awe-inspired by spectacular views of mountain peaks. Experience a rare opportunity to mix with a traditional Himalayan community, considered by many to be the last Shangri-La.We travel to Bhutan along winding mountain roads. We visit Thimpu, the nation’s capital, and wander through markets, Buddhist temples and monasteries. We watch local craftsmen working with wood, silver and gold. We journey to Punakha via the Duchola Pass, with its stunning views of the Himalayas. Add a visit to Paro, where one can hike to Taktsang Monastery and encounter Bhutan’s gentle and gracious people. It’s the perfect recipe for a magical itinerary set against the mystical backdrop of the majestic Himalayas.

In the 13th century, Marco Polo wrote of Kunming and Yunnan: “The capital city named Yachi is very great and noble. In it are found merchants and artisans with a mixed population of idolaters, Nestorian Christians, and Saracens or Mohametans. The land is fertile in rice and wheat...”

Yunnan’s diversity of natural wonders includes Himalayan peaks, fertile valleys, tropical rainforests, tranquil lakes and thundering rivers. The snow-capped mountains and glaciers feed two of the world’s great rivers, the Mekong and the Yangtse. Culturally, the area is a veritable cornucopia of 24 colorful and exotic ethnic groups including the Yi, Lisu, Bai, Naxi, Li and Tibetan people.

Starting in Kunming, we visit the Western Hills and a temple carved out of the mountainside. In the town of Dali, we explore ancient streets surrounded by remnants of the city wall that once protected inhabitants from invaders. In the background, the Cangshan Mountains rise to snowy heights. We cruise on beautiful Erhai Lake before traveling to higher altitudes as we begin our journey to Zhongdian and Dêqên on the Tibetan Plateau. We encounter Tibetans in their traditional villages, plowing fields with yaks in this truly rugged, spectacular and seldom-visited Shangri-La.

We descend from the Tibetan plateau to the town of Lijiang and walk along footpaths over ancient canals and alongside merchant shops.

Finally, we board a plane to Chengdu in Sichuan province, where we conclude our trip with a visit to the UNESCO Panda Breeding Sanctuary.

Grasslands extend to a horizon of cobalt-blue skies, pastel-hued rocks color the Gobi Desert and fast-flowing rivers cut deep canyons in arid steppes in this remote Asian nation land-locked between China and Russia. The people, descendants of Genghis Khan, are an eclectic mix of rugged nomads, Buddhist monks, farmers and merchants. site with remains so plentiful that dinosaur eggshells can still be found on the surface.

In Yol Valley National Park, we experience a unique environment that includes 200 species of birds and 600 species of vegetation. We overnight at The Hongory Els to experience the “Singing Sands”. We stay on the beautiful shores of Lake Hovsgol. Surrounded by mountains and forests, it contains three percent of the earth’s fresh water. Expedition Cruise

This is one of the last great journeys in an ever-shrinking world. We are privileged to get to know a land and a people in a way that very few have experienced as we travel from Nome, Alaska across the Bering Strait to Chukotka in the far eastern Russian Arctic. Here we enter the homeland of the Chukchi and Siberian Yupik Eskimo nations. Long isolated from western civilization, these indigenous people have learned to survive and even thrive in one of the harshest environments on the planet. When we arrive it will be late summer and the ice encasing the region every winter will have retreated far to the north. The area holds an abundance of wildlife, notably migratory birds, walrus and polar bears. Many of the bird species we will find come here for the express purpose of breeding, taking advantage of the brief summer explosion of life, a period of exceptionally abundant resources provided by land and sea. We plan to spend two days at Wrangel Island, well known to biologists as a ‘Polar Bear maternity ward’ on account of the number of cubs born here in winter. At this and other isolated outposts in the High Arctic, we will explore the natural and human history of this wild and beautiful land.

Activity Level: 1 Comfort Level: Seas can be rough when in open water. Wet and dry zodiac landings. Very remote. Accommodations: Our vessel, the Spirit of Enderby (Professor Khromov) is perfect for expedition travel. The real focus and emphasis of every expedition is getting you ashore as often as possible for as long as possible with maximum safety and comfort. It carries just 50 passengers in very comfortable accommodation. Cabins with private or shared bathrooms. She measures 72 metres in length and is fully ice-strengthened.

From Nome, Alaska in the north to Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk, Russia in the south, this journey presents the unique opportunity of travelling down the entire coastline of the Russian Far East. This is a chance to discover a region that, until recently, was ‘off limits’ to western visitors. The Russian Far East is composed of extreme environments, starting with the uninhabited islands off the shores of Chukotka and the vast north Russian tundra; barren lands that the Chukchi, a people who herd reindeer, call home. Travelling south we encounter the forests and snow-capped volcanoes of Kamchatka where you will see and experience wildlife in great colonies and rookeries. Our landings will focus on flora, fauna, and interactions with local people in genuine situations, enabling you to better understand their history and lifestyle. Sailing further south to the volcanic islands of the Kuril Chain, we will find the highest density of seabirds in Asia.

Thailand is an ancient Buddhist kingdom of

temples, tropical jungles and warm, gracious peo-ple. In the north, life proceeds quietly in hilltribe

villages while in the south, the golden spires of the Grand Palace rise above manicured gardens and marble walkways.

In Bangkok, we explore the Grand Palace and floating market. At the River Kwai, take a dip at a local waterfall and discover the infamous history of the area. Here, we stay on comfortable, floating bungalows on the river, set against a backdrop of jungle-covered mountains.

At Khao Yai, we encounter one of the largest rainforests in mainland Asia. Here, we have our best opportunity to observe hornbills and elephants in the wild.

Traveling north, we visit the ancient capital of Sukhothai and discover the splendor of Thailand’s classical period by bicycle. Chiang Mai, a relaxing city renowned for its tradi-tion of excellent handicrafts, is our base in the north. For those who like to trek, we offer an option of hilltribe hiking to a Karen village. For those who prefer something less active, we also visit hilltribe villages by road and river as well as the delightful town of Mae Hong Son, set amongst the beautiful mountain scenery of the far northwest.

Our trip to ancient Siam concludes in Bangkok, with a farewell dinner and traditional Thai dance.

proud Batak people migrated from the Himalayan foothills of upper Burma and Thailand over 1,500 years ago. Journey to islands where volcanoes puff smoke, green rice sways in reflecting paddies, white sand beaches glisten in the sun, and ancient monuments and arts thrive in a contemporary culture.

We begin in Yogyakarta, the former royal capital of Java — a city where culture is expressed in the arts of batik, painting, and wood sculpture; in the courtly dances performed to the rhythms of the gamelan orchestras; and in the wayang kulit, the shadow puppet performances of the Ramayana epic. Nearby, we find the two ancient masterpieces of Borobudur and Prambanan temples, both over a thousand years old.

At Mount Bromo, witness a volcanic landscape with an accessible crater and a rumbling fire down below. In Lovina, Bali, take in the coral reefs and sandy beaches before continuing on to Ubud to explore the arts and crafts of Bali. Our trip concludes in the tranquil seaside resort of Candidasa where we board traditional fishing boats for a remote beach and fishing village, and a last swim in the warm, turquoise sea.

Accommodations4 or 5 nights basic accommodation. Bush houses with limited bathrooms in Sepik. Trobriand Island accommodation is a basic lodge. Papua New Guinea is like no other place on earth — culturally rich and geographically remote, with some of the most stunning scenery anywhere.

From the rugged mountains to the coastal islands, this journey is an adventure of a lifetime. We meet and learn about some of the tribal people of this land, including the Asaro Mudmen, the Huli, the Simbu, the Kaguel and the fascinating Trobriand Islanders.

Our adventure includes many village visits to meet the people and truly experience their way of life. We explore the Sepik River by wooden canoe. We spend three days on Kiriwina Island (part of the Trobriand Islands), where people live a traditional lifestyle.

Our August departure features the Mt. Hagen Show, where the tribes come from all over Papua New Guinea for a spectacular “singsing”— a traditional song and dance festival complete with traditional tribal clothing and body decoration. Our September departure features the Goroka Cultural Show, where over 100 different tribal groups perform their singsing over a two-day period.

Please Note: This adventure has been designed to fully experience the villages and people of Papua New Guinea. In order to do this, we visit a number of local villages and stay overnight in very basic accommodations, with no fans/air conditioning and limited bathrooms.

As much of the interior of the country has no roads (or impassable ones), we maximize our time by flying between destinations and flight schedules frequently change.

While we endeavor to do and see everything listed in the itinerary, not everything in Papua New Guinea goes as planned. Travelers must be prepared for changes to this program along our journey.
