NOVEMBER 2018

Thank you to everyone who got involved in Hospice Care Week last month and joined in with our ‘Go Yellow for Hospice Care’ day.

‘Go Yellow for Hospice Care’ We loved seeing how creative you all were with the theme, there were some great outfits and shop windows. We appreciate all the effort made to promote Hospice care.

Amy and Tracey in Fundraising were chosen as joint winners and shared a yellow themed chocolate hamper, made by Michelle of Michelle’s Flowers.

We love that both Tracey’s and Amy’s outfits were already in their wardrobe and they didn’t even have to buy them for the occasion.

Talking about the win, Tracey said; ‘If fundraisers aren’t really good at dressing up then there’s something wrong!”

Our Hemsworth shop scooped the prize for best dressed team, and Castleford were awarded best window display. Both shops won a chocolate and biscuit bundle to share amongst their team.

Take a look at some of the brilliant photos from the day.

Doncaster Shop Opening

World Kindness Day is an annual event that celebrates and promotes good deeds and acts of kindness.

The official day is planned for 13th November and there are things you could do that would benefit our patients by raising much needed funds:

• donate unwanted clothes or other items we could sell in our shops;• take home a collection box and fill it with your loose change; and• sign up to one of our events before the end of the year. Santa Dash is always good fun and Light up a Life is a lovely way to get your Christmas started. Other ideas of random acts of kindness include:

• eat lunch with someone new;• send a thank you email to a friend or colleague;• Pay someone a compliment; and• sign up to the organ donor register.

Take a look at kindnessuk.com for loads of other ideas on their website.

£1,143,852of sales were made.

25th October 2018 marked 100 years since the Yorkshire Electric Power Company purchased an area of land from the Marquess of Crewe, adjacent to the River Aire for the purposes of building what was to be the UK’s largest electricity generating station using coal brought from the nearby colliery. So came to pass the beginning of what is the most prestigious and historically important site for the power industry anywhere in the country.

The entire Ferrybridge site has produced electricity continuously for 90 years, something not achieved anywhere else, and as far as records show has produced more power than any other location in the UK.

The beautiful red brick Grade II listed building that housed the original turbines of the “A” Station still stands proud, and continues to be an important site for the power industry to this day, housing one of the finest heavy engineering workshops in the country, a Training Academy that continues to educate and develop young talent through apprenticeship, technician and graduate programmes, and adult learning, and many of the staff that give life to the power that we all take for granted.

Jo Lister was approached by Andy Alden and Richard Hirst of Ferrybridge power station, to create a mural for the centenary which depicted 100 years of power in the community. Jo told us she was very lucky that Yan Lawrence, a local photographer and historian was able to supply lots of photos to give her inspiration.

The wall is approximately 13m x 4m and Jo was asked to include key parts in the mural such as a train, the old style turbines, the pit head at Kellingley, the barges and Tom Puddings, the cranes unloading the coal and a bird to represent Fairburn Ings as well as

the towers and a rugby player.

Speaking about the Centenary, Jo said; “I am so fortunate to have been given this opportunity to be able to do something for the local community. The Hospice were fantastic at giving me the time to be able to go and do the painting, as they recognise how important our local community are. I am proud to have been part of this celebration and to have been able to contribute in a small way.”

They have had two events, a corporate event on the actual Centenary on 25th October and the community event on the 27th October. The events were free but you had to get a ticket as places were limited.

They had a brass band, a performance by Featherstone male voice choir, as well as workshop tours and plenty of food and drink.

I’m sure everyone will agree the mural looks fantastic, a huge well done to Jo for creating it.

Wellbeing choir

We had a special visit from Badsworth Primary School at our Badsworth Outreach group. The children came to share their harvest message, explaining the process that corn goes through before it lands on our plates. Each child also had something to read and pictures to hold up, which illustrated the points they were making.

After the presentations, the children spent time chatting to the patients and the whole room was buzzing with the energy that the youngsters brought to the morning.

The patients always enjoy

visits from the school children and it’s so rewarding to see the two groups, so far apart in age, engaging so well together. There’s a tangible change in the patients mood which last well beyond the time when they return home and go back to their routines.

The children clearly enjoyed themselves and when they return to school their talk is all about the people they have met and chatted with. It is quite remarkable that both groups benefit so much.

Badsworth Primary share their harvest message

The Wellbeing choir had its first meeting this month and we had an enjoyable time in the Haven.

We talked briefly about how things might work, then sang together, which encouraged those who had reservations about their ability to join in.

The choir is open to all Hospice staff and volunteers and the hope is that we’ll be able to sing something at a Hospice event.

We plan on meeting fortnightly and may have meetings at various times to accommodate shifts and work patterns, so if you’re interested, get in touch with Fr Stephen on [email protected]

We are a breastfeeding friendly organisation I’m pleased to let you know that The Prince of Wales Hospice is now officially recognised as a breastfeeding friendly organisation.

We know that breastfeeding is good for mums, babies and the environment, however many mums can feel nervous about breastfeeding whilst out and about.

By signing up to the breastfeeding friendly scheme we show that we welcome and support breastfeeding at the Hospice and in our shops.

Breastfeeding friendly stickers will be displayed in the entrance to the Hospice and we have introduced a new Breastfeeding At Work Policy.

Make a will week Last year, one quarter of our care was funded from gifts in wills.

Leaving a gift to the Hospice in your will is a fantastic way to support us, which doesn’t cost you a penny now. Even 1% would make a remarkable difference.

19th - 23rd November is make a will week, thanks to the support of local solicitors and

will writers, you can have a will expertly written or updated in exchange for a donation to the Hospice.

For a list of participating solicitors please visit www.pwh.org.uk/will or pick up a leaflet from fundraising.

Please share this information with patients and families you think might benefit.
