QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS

UTP places strong emphasis on Research and Development as it strives to achieve the status of an internationally renowned Research University. In

its quest to attain academic and R&D excellence, UTP forged strategic alliances and received significant software donations from several industry partners. Recently the University received software donations from several industry partners namely Fugro-Jason, EPS-Weatherford and Senergy International Sdn Bhd.

The University continues to maintain its excellence in the field of research where it won medals at a national exhibition recently. UTP won 2 gold, 9 silver and 6 bronze medals at the 11th edition of the Malaysian Technology Expo (MTE) held from 16 – 18 February 2012 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), Kuala Lumpur.

Our students have also done the University proud by emerging as champions in both national and international level competitions and tournaments in the areas of oil & gas, speech and debate, broadcasting and multimedia as well as martial arts.

We had our student intake in January when the Minggu Aluan Siswa was held to welcome new students to the campus. In February, a new line up of student leaders were chosen in the Students Representative Council and International Students Council Election Day.

Meanwhile, UTP continues to serve the community through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) projects such as the Program BAKTI Pendidikan PETRONAS and a day at the Nur Kasih Orphanage Home in Taiping held by UTP Alumni and UTP SIFE-YEC. UTP alumni members have also promoted the University through various talks held in Miri and Bintulu, Sarawak.

We hope you enjoy your reading of the Quarterly!

QUARTERLY NEWSLETTER FOR UNIVERSITI TEKNOLOGI PETRONAS COLLABORATIONS

Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS signed a software license academic agreement with Weatherford (M) Sdn Bhd on 28 February 2012 at the UTP campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar. In the ceremony, UTP received from Weatherford a donation of 25 PanSystem licenses for 25 users and upgrading of 30 WellFlo licenses with a total estimated value of about RM3 million.

At the ceremony Weatherford was represented by Ir Roslin Rozani, Executive Director of Weatherford Malaysia while UTP was represented by its Vice Chancellor Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin bin Haji Kasim.

The partnership between EPS-Weatherford and UTP started way back in October 2004. The primary objective of the collaboration was to gain EPS-Weatherford interest to support the delivery of the MSc. PE modules: Production Technology II and Reservoir Engineering II by providing its widely-used and up-to-date software applications: WellFlo and PanSystem. Subsequently, Software License Academic Agreements

were signed in 2005, followed by the UTP-Weatherford Signing Ceremony on 15 November 2006.

On 28 April 2009, Mr. Martin McMyler, Weatherford Country Manager, Malaysia visited UTP and officially signed and exchanged a software agreement on Petroleum Engineering Software: WellFlo – where Weatherford gave an additional 25 WellFlo licenses to UTP. As of 2009, Weatherford had donated 35 licenses (30 for WellFlo and 5 for PanSystem Software), estimated to be RM5.1 million worth of software licenses in total.

WellFlo is a Petroleum Engineering Software which is used to design, model, optimize and troubleshoot naturally flowing or artificially lifted wells while PanSystem is well test analysis software which is applied to obtain important reservoir parameters.

The University’s Petroleum Engineering students have been using both software in their study modules, Field Development Plan

Global energy services company Senergy International Sdn Bhd forged an alliance with Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP) that will see the two organisations collaborate to develop research programmes, including the connection of renewable energy sources to the national electricity grid. To meet the increasing energy demands, it is hoped the research will find a solution for future sustainable electricity supply.

In addition, Senergy has donated software licences worth more than US$3 million to UTP to equip geosciences petroleum engineering students and researchers with industry standard evaluation capabilities.

UTP Vice Chancellor, Datuk Dr Zainal Abidin Haji Kasim and Senergy CEO James McCallum (who is also Professor of Energy at Strathclyde University in Scotland), witnessed the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding between Senergy and UTP at the campus in Bandar Seri Iskandar on 22 February 2012 to promote collaborative links which will enhance the scientific, technical and engineering competencies of both parties.

(FDP) exercises and Final Year Projects. With the increase in the number of students, there was a need for more PanSystem licenses and Weatherford has topped up the numbers.

Besides donating software licenses, Weatherford has continuously provided UTP with excellent technical support such as organising user training courses for its undergraduate and post-graduate students as well as lecturers to get familiarised with the software.

Weatherford is one of the largest global providers of products and services that span the drilling, evaluation, completion, production and intervention cycles of oil and natural gas wells.

Prof McCallum also presented the software licences for Senergy’s petrophysics analysis tool IP™ (Interactive Petrophysics), which will be used by students and researchers. IP was developed by Senergy’s team of petrophysicists as a versatile and portable technology to enable fast and accurate multi-zone, multi-field well analysis. The software is currently used by over 500 companies in over 70 countries across the world.

Prof McCallum said, “Senergy has been committed to investing in Malaysia and the Malaysian energy industry since its foundation here in 2004, and Kuala Lumpur forms our base for the Asia Pacific region. Agreements such as these are a tremendous way of bringing together the skills, expertise and resources of two parties to help achieve a common goal more efficiently.”

“I am delighted that Senergy and UTP have forged this understanding and I look forward to seeing the fruits of this labour, both with regards to the grid integration of renewable energy sources and other programmes, in years to come.”

Protecting Intellectual Property via Patents

8

RESEARCH & INNOVATION

The Patents Act 1983 (the “Patents Act”) and the Patents Regulations 1986 (the “Patents Regulations”), which came into force on 1 October 1986, govern the grant and validity of patent rights for inventions in Malaysia. These statutes provide an independent patent system for Malaysia under which an application must be filed with the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) to secure the grant of a Malaysian patent. The earlier system of re-registering UK patents has been repealed.

On 16 May 2006, Malaysia acceded to the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT). As a result, the PCT entered into force for Malaysia with effect from 16 August 2006. The PCT provides a new avenue for Malaysian individuals and companies to initiate the complex process of securing patents overseas, by allowing them to file an international patent application. It also simplifies the process of applying for a Malaysian patent for overseas applicants that have filed a PCT application on or after 16 August 2006.

Definition of inventionThe Act defines an invention as an idea of an inventor which permits in practice the solution to a specific problem in the field of technology. An invention may be, or relate to, a product or process.

Patentable inventionsTo be patentable, an invention must:

• be new, i.e. not disclosed to the public in Malaysia or anywhere else, before the priority date of the application;

• i nvolve an inventive step, i.e. not be obvious to a person reasonably skilled in the art, having regard to what was already in the public domain as of the priority date;

• have industrial application, i.e. be capable of being made or used in any kind of industry;

• be capable of definition, in one or more claims of the patent application, in terms of its technical features; and

• be supported by an enabling description and any necessary drawings that teach others how to make and work the invention, and disclose the best mode of doing so that is known to the applicant.

Applicant and inventorAn inventor (i.e. the person who actually created the invention) is entitled to apply for a patent. If there is more than one inventor involved, a joint application may be made which allows each inventor to claim an equal share in the patent rights. However, in cases where the invention was created by an employee in the course of his/her employment or made pursuant to a commission, the patent rights are deemed to accrue to the employer or the commissioner respectively.

Priority claimAs Malaysia is a member of the Paris Convention, an applicant can claim the priority date of a first application in respect of the invention that was filed in another Paris Convention country. A priority claim may also now be made in respect of a first application made in a World Trade Organization (WTO) member country. In either case, the application in Malaysia must be filed within a period of 12 months from the earlier application’s filing date.

The effect of a priority claim is that the novelty and inventive step of the invention will be determined relative to the state of the art (i.e. what was in the public domain) as of the priority date instead of the filing date of the application. As a result, any relevant publications that occurred after the priority date do not need to be taken into account when assessing patentability.
