• Students will describe how post WWII Europe leads to increasing tensions between democratic and communist countries
• Students will identify the iron curtain and the importance of the Berlin Air Lift
Iron Curtain
• The two superpowers–United States and Soviet Union–Cold War: state of tension between
superpowers who competed economically and militarily; • it was “Cold” because armed battle did
not occur
Iron Curtain
• Divided Europe– West: democratic– East: communist– Iron Curtain – imaginary line that divided
communist and non-communist nations– Germany: • Western – democracy, Eastern – Soviet Union
Cold War
• Opposing military alliances• NATO – North Atlantic Treaty Organization,
Western nations pledged to support each other if any member was attacked (democratic)
• Warsaw Pact – Soviet Union and seven satellite nations (communist)
• Non-alignment – some nations chose not to ally with either side during the Cold War– Ex. India, Yugoslavia, many African nations
Crisis in Germany
– Berlin: Capital city split West and East, Berlin located in East Germany
– Berlin Airlift: Stalin wanted Allies out of Berlin, closed land routes to get supplies to West Berlin, Allies airlifted food and supplies to West Berlin for almost a year, Stalin ended blockade
– Berlin Wall: communists built a wall to separate East and West Germany, soldiers shot anyone who tried to escape East Germany
