Skill Enhancement
The Aga Khan Foundation and HUDCO signed an MoU on 10-
December 2011, in the presence of Ms Kumari Selja, Hon’ble Minister
of Housing and Poverty Alleviation & Ministry of Culture. The initiative
allowed skill training in various fields such as crafts, construction and
computer for about 200 women & youth from the Basti and contributed
to process of development of the Hazrat Nizamuddin Basti.

Existing livelihood groups, NOOR and INSHA have benefitted through advanced trainings
while other groups have been trained in new trades. Such livelihood groups have not only helped increase family incomes of the women but have also helped instill a sense
of confidence and self reliance. The trainings were conducted by experts
from Jan Shiksha Sansthan, All India Women’s Confederation and Literacy India.

WEB DESIGNING
Access to computer-based trainings through the NIIT centre at the MCD school
has supported many youth from the Basti in seeking jobs in Service Industry. Under the Skill Enhancement Program, 116 students have been trained in various computer
fields. Following discussions with youth and after conducting market surveys, two new courses of Web Designing and Hardware
and Networking were introduced under the training program.

Computer Reservation System
Travel and Tourism 21 students took up courses related to the Hospitality industry. The Travel and Tourism
courses were carried out by the Delhi Institute of Travel and Tourism (DITTM), who have provided an opportunity for students to explore jobs in various travel agencies
through campus placements. The Food and Beverage course,
conducted by Campus and Beyond has been able to find job opportunities with
various companies.

AKTC has been carrying out conservation works using traditional building and
conservation methods in the Humayun’s Tomb, Sundar Nursery and Hazrat
Nizamuddin Basti since 2007. Under the Skill Enhancement Training program, 9
craftsmen from the basti were trained in the manufacture of hand-crafted tiles
which will be used during the conservation works at Humayun’s Tomb and other
Mughal structures. The training of these craftsmen will help revive a rare and
forgotten art of tile making.

Introductory SessionsThe Basti has several youth engaged in the construction industry in the form of
electricians and plumbers; however they lacked formal training and knowledge of
correct practices. A training to impart knowledge on
correct methods, practices and tools was organized for 12 electricians through
CCPS and the Ministry of Labour.
