North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA)

iWireless Center • Moline, Illinois

For three days in early April, Black Hawk College hosted hundreds of youth and college competitors for the North American Colleges and Teachers of Agriculture (NACTA) Judging Conference 2015.

Contestants competed in the following areas: • Agribusiness • Horse Judging • Agricultural Mechanics & Material Handling • Horticulture Judging • Agricultural Communications • Knowledge Bowl • Computer Applications • Livestock Judging • Crops Judging • Meat Animal & Livestock Management • Dairy Judging • Soils Judging

The stats: • 12 contests • 173 teams • 24 states • 325 youth contestants • 51 schools • 834 individual entries • 49,896 meals packaged for the River Bend Food Bank

The theme for this year’s conference aligned with the Agriculture Department’s mission statement, “What starts here changes the world, one student at a time.”

“The young people in attendance at this conference are the future of agriculture,” said Drew Cotton, conference co-chair and assistant professor of horse science. “They have unlimited potential and optimism with which to attack challenges and opportunities,” he said.

The NACTA Livestock, Dairy and Soils Judging Conference began in 1970. The college co-hosted in 1975 and hosted in 2004. The 2015 event involved months of planning and little sleep for East Campus faculty, staff and students the week of the conference. Thanks to everyone who helped make it a success!

Horse Judging Awards & Scholarships

Susan Shipp Memorial Scholarship (Freshman Horse Judging) ............................................................................. TBAThis award is given in memory of Susan, a transfer student who lost her life in a car accident while a student at BHE in November, 1994. It is awarded to a member of the freshmen horse judging team. The selection is based on Contest results, an essay about their Personal Characteristics and first semester GPA.

Pard’s Western Store Work Horse Award (Sophomore Horse Judging) ............................................................... TBAEach year Pard’s Western store presents a gift certificate to the sophomore horse judge that competed on the judging team all four semesters; set high goals for themselves and the team; stayed very coachable until the end and added value to the team by motivating others and staying a team player. They always tried hard and finished strong, but not necessar-ily finished 1st. Also plans to continue their education and judging at a four-year institute.

Robert & Jean Wolf Memorial Scholarship (Sophomore Horse Judging) ............................................................. TBAIn the fall of 2002 Jon Wolf, founder of the Equine program, suffered the loss of both parents, Robert and Jean Wolf of Polo during the month of September. They were of vital support in the beginning of the program and remained so to the end. Both parents are so reflected in the personality and dedication of Jon. This award will be given to a sophomore horse judge that compted on the judging team all four semesters; set high goals and made major progress in their placing of classes and oral reasons; stayed very coachable until the end, trying hard and finishing strong. This award goes to the sophomore who accumulates the most contest points in fall competition.
