“What I rememberis that an au-t o r i c k s h a w
driver pointed towards thebonnet of my car, sayingthere had been some sparks.
Then two unidentified peo-ple who identified them-selves as mechanics came tome. They spoke with me, Idon’t remember what theysaid. They asked me forRs.10,755.Then they tookmeto the ATMwhere I withdrew
the money and gave it tothem. I don’t know why I didthat,” says Virendra Vermawho had this peculiar expe-rience on the Eastern Ex-press Highway betweenThane and Mulund lastThursday morning.Verma (40) isworking as an
account director with a re-puted company and hethinks he was hynotised andcheated by strange men onhis way to office which is ac-tually in Parel. He insists theeffects were so strong thatthey lasted at least 20 min-utes. At one point he says hetold the men, “Bhai, aapmuze ch---ya to nahi banarahe ho?” (Brother, are younotmaking a fool out ofme?)

In a bizarre incident, con-men used an online classi-
fied site, OLX.com, toapproach a seller and rob hishigh-end mobile phone, butafter only thrashing him.The incident took place on
Tuesday night at Tilak Nagarin Chembur, when 20-year-old Sandeep Jadhav was ap-proached by a person whowanted to purchase his mo-bile phone. Jadhav, a studentand an active social worker, had placed an advertisementfor selling his SamsungGrandmobile for Rs.12,000.
Seeing the advertisementon the classified website, aperson contacted Jadhavand told him that he was in-terested butwould like to seethe handset first. Jadhav, aresident of Sangharsh Nagarat Chandivali in Andheri, was called to Tilak Nagar bythe buyer who told him hewould not be able to comeall the way to Andheri.Jadhav agreed and de-
cided tomeet the buyer at 10pm below the Chembur sky-walk leading towards Chem-bur railway station. WhileJadhav was accompanied byhis friend, the buyer reached
the spot along with threeother persons.“The four thrashed Jadhav
and his friend black-and-blue and fled away with hismobile phone,” said LaxmanBhalerao, senior inspector ofTilak Nagar police station.A complaint was regis-
tered in Tilak Nagar policestation against four uniden-tified persons under the rele-vant sections of IPC, said thepolice. The complainant andhis friendwere treated at Ra-jawadi Hospital, while thepolice are now hunting forthe accused.

Although the south-westmonsoon has arrivedin the state earlier than
expected, the rainfall data ofthe last 10 days is yet to raiseany hopes of ending thewater scarcity in parts of Ma-harashtra. Since June 1, whenthe pre-monsoon showersbegan, and since the onset ofthe monsoon a week later, the rainfall has beensatisfactory in seven out ofthe 35 districts in the state.Even as the south-west mon-soon has covered most partsof the state, the cattle campsare still being run. However, the rains have slightly re-duced the number of watertankers deployed in scarcity
hit regions.The monsoon has been
good in Mumbai City, Mum-bai Suburban,Thane, Raigad,Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg andKolhapur districts so far. However, the rainfall is farfrom satisfactory in theworstscarcity hit districts of thestate like Solapur, Au-rangabad, Jalna, Beed, Latur,Osmanabad, Nanded, Parb-hani, Hingoli and Jalgaon. The scarcity hit district ofAhmednagar however has re-ceived 75.6 mm of rainfall sofar. The state average rainfallfor June has been 222.1 mm,this year, till mid-June, it is al-ready 81.2 mm.Till last week there were
5,500 water tankers deployedin 4,482 villages and 10,882
hamlets across the state. Thisfigure has come down to5,456 water tankers as of yes-terday. Comparatively, lastyear 2,554water tankers weredeployed in thewater scarcityhit villages. Still there are1,244 cattle camps in opera-tion mostly in Marathwada, north Maharashtra andwestern Maharashtra. Therains are yet to shore up thedam levels in the state. Thewater levels in dams inKonkan, Nagpur and Amra-vati have shown some mar-ginal increase.

Taking a lesson from thesevere drought in the
state, the state Governmentyesterday decided to setaside Rs. 470 crore for amicro-irrigation scheme tobe implemented from thisyear across the state.Under the fire from all
sides for ineffective large-scale irrigation projectswhich did not provide any re-lief to the farming commu-nity, the Congress-NCPgovernment decided at acabinet meeting yesterdaymorning to introduce thenew irrigation method, which will be monitored bythe Agriculture department.Presently a Central scheme isin existence, however, it isprone to delays. For this ambitious scheme,
Rs 250 crore will be madeavailable every year for the
next three years for this pur-pose; the project will be firstimplemented in Konkan,Marathwada regions alongwith Gondia, Gadchiroli andBhandara districts of Vi-darbha region. Funds fromNational Micro-IrrigationScheme, Vidarbha IntensiveIrrigation Development Pro-gramme andRashtriya KrishiVikasYojnawill be utilized forthis scheme. The government has also
pointed out that so far, thestate has received 37 per centof the average rainfall forJune. In the first ten days ofthemonth, 68 tehsils have re-ceivedmore than 75 per centof average rainfall while 177tehsils have received morethan 100 per cent of themonth’s average. Sowing op-erations are in full swing inmost of the parts of the state.Of the 134.69 lakh hectares, sowing has been completedon 0.3 per cent area.
Monsoon in, but yetto raise hopes

We notice that Sreesanth is alreadybehaving as if his little sojourn injail is just a hiccup in his life andnow that he is out on bail, he canput the past behind him.And what is with his parents and
the rest of the family running off tochurch at every opportunity andlighting candles and spending 15minutes in thanksgiving prayer, forall the world as if he has finallysucceeded in climbing MountEverest.Alright, we know it’s obvious that
we are less than enamored of him,but it looks as if his disconnectfrom the real world is still complete.“I’ll have to start from scratch”, hedeclares. We would like to remindhim that he has not beenacquitted, discharged, or otherwisegot free of the system so he canstart from scratch of wherever hewants, but there are still a lot ofquestions he must answer. Whatwas he planning to do with the Rs 5lakh in cash allegedly found in hishotel room in the suburbs, for onething? And not all the lit candles in the
world can change that.
The depths of idiocyYou imagine that the Mumbaipolice have already plumbed thedepths of idiocy – and then they goand arrest that poor SoorajPanscholi for allegedly abetting thesuicide of 25-year-old Jiah Khan.Frankly, we think that the six-
page letter that her mother Rabiyasays she wrote, and that werefound in her room three days aftershe died, should have been keptunder wraps because they showboth the girl and her own family insuch a poor light. Her is someone who has had the
kind of chances that millions ofyoung women all over the countrycrave, without ever getting thetiniest opportunity. She messes things up through
her own bad decisions. She hangs
in there for years. She enters into arelationship with someone youngerthan her, from the same industry.Things sour there as well. Dies shethink that perhaps she should trysomething else in life, bothprofessionally as well aspersonally?Of course not. She wants what
she wants (and in this case, cannotget). Her mother sees her on oneoccasion (or maybe two or three, things are so confusing becauseshe keeps letting them out to themedia in a steady trickle) withbruises on her face and hasalready noted that she isdepressed. Does she haul off andsmack her daughter out of love andconcern? Does she storm off to thePanscholis and haul off and smackhim? We would do that in a similarsituation because we would never
tolerate someone raising theirhands to our daughters or lettingour daughters tolerate violenceeither.Again, of course not. She “asks”
her to move out of the relationship. How is someone who alreadyseems unbalanced with frustrationand grief expected to do that? Andso Jiah Khan hurtled towards anend that in hindsight seemsinevitable.Having read reams on the
subject and already completely
sickened by the turn things havetaken, we think that the only onewho got it right was AmitabhBachchan. Asked to comment onhis co-star from Nishabd, theremake of the controversial Lolitaby Vladimir Nabokov, he said hewas greatly grieved by her death, but committing suicide is just notthe way to handle life. Think of themisery you leave behind, he said.Jiah Khan started her Bollywood
career in a Lolita type role. Whendid she become as vulnerable asLittle Orphan Annie?
Tragedies that go nowhereOur hearts go out to criminal lawyerRizwan Khan and the survivingmembers of his family. Not only didthe man who defended actorSanjay Dutt in the arms case withso much heart, lose his wife and
his mother in the Mahim buildingcollapse on Monday night, but healso had to sit and hear the lifeebbing out from his 13-year-old sonwho was trapped under the debris. It is a bitter truth that, as with all
these cases, the first thing theauthorities think of is a cover-up.So building plans have gonemissing and how does onecompare what exists with what wasmeant to be?One thing is sure. This tragedy is
not going to change a thing.

We had almost forgotten how dramatic the sky and the skyline could be in Mumbai, till we were sent this picture of the GodrejTowers against a stormy monsoon scene in Vikhroli recently. Come to think of it, we had almost forgotten what a monsoon couldbe like, and now we are thankfully reminded.
I think it’s pretty safe to say that KarshKale is someone almost every IndieIndian artist looks up to in terms orcomposing and performance. He has teemed up with the MidivialPunditz, Norah Jones and the BombayDub Orchestra to produce some of thefinest eclectic fusion music this countryhas seen. As a recurring performer at theNH7 Weekenders and Blue frog, you knowthe guy means business when he wasasked to perform at the White House forPresident Barack Obama and wasmentioned specifically in the USpresident’s speech. “The artists joining ustoday exemplify that creed. So we’ve gotperformers like Karsh Kale, who fuses thebest of East and West, mixing eclecticbeats with the sounds of his heritage andcreating music that’s distinctly his own.”Seriously, how flippin’ cool is that? The bloke’s no stranger to performing atprestigious events. He’s previouslyworked his magic at the Grammy’s andconcert for peace by the Clintons (wherehe got to speak to Bill Clinton) and we’vegot a feeling this is just the beginning forhim. Godspeed Karsh! We wish you thebest!

It took a teamof around 80 policepersonnel, including 20 officers,of the Bandra police station, to
crack the murder case of a 58 year-old senior citizen, Nalini Chainani, whowas killed onTuesday evening. The police were themselves dumb-struck when they learned that boththe murderers were actually deafand dumb. The two accused gained access
into the home of the victim becauseshe knew them well. On enteringthe house they attacked her withsharp weapons and hurriedly de-camped with valuables, but madethe mistake of leaving their cellphones behind. As they exited thebuilding, the watchman who wasnot present when they had arrived, questioned them and before run-ning away, one of the accused re-portedly showed him seven fingersto indicate that they were comingfrom the 7th floor. Her body was
discovered by her husband, Sunil, who returned home at around 8.30pm.
After a couple of hours, when theaccusedwanted to use their phonesand couldn’t find them, they begancalling their numbers from variouslocations in Mumbra and Bandra, which helped investigators whowere present at the crime scene, crack the case. The ADC spoke to a local resi-
dent, Naresh, who said that both theaccused were sitting outside thebuilding from early morning, look-ing for chance to enter into Mad-huban Apartments, where thevictim lived. But no one got suspi-cious because one of the accused,Saif Bhavnagri (28), used to stay inthe next building namedGul PalaceApartments.According to Deputy Commis-
sioner of Police (Zone IX), CherringDorje ‘’We solved the murder casewithin 12 hours, and have arrestedtwo deaf and dumb accused in thisconnection. They have been identi-fied as Saif Raza Shabbir HussainBhavnagri (28) and his accomplice,
Parvez Wahid Khan (30) who is agym trainer by profession and theson of city-based doctor. Saif knewvictim and her familymembers verywell, They reportedly entered thebuilding at around 4 pm and com-mitted the crime at around 5.30 pm,after sitting and chatting with theunsuspecting victim who also of-fered them tea and refreshments. They made off with gold jewelleryand cash, totally worth Rs.4 lakh, some of whichwas recovered later.”“Based on the descriptions given
by the building’s watchman andthrough theirmobile phones whichthey left at the crime scene, we ar-rested Saif from his Mumbra resi-dence, while Parvez were picked up
from Bandra’s Chinmaiwada local-ity,” added Dorje.Investigation officer Rajendra
Kane revealed that in their confes-sions, the duo revealed that theywere in the habit of drinking andgoing to discotheques, and due totheir bad habits, their families hadstopped giving them any pocketmoney. They therefore had plannedto kill Mrs Chainani around a fort-night ago.“We produced them before the
court which remanded them to po-lice custody till June 15.We have re-covered the knife used in themurder and some jewellery, and in-vestigations are still on,” addedKane.

Besides this, theSangh is reported to have de-cided to recall its organisa-tional secretaries Shyam Laland Suresh Soni for their al-leged failure to damage con-trol recent drama of Advaniresignation.Yesterday, two senior
Sangh functionaries told Ad-vani in no uncertain terms todesist from making personalremarks and commentsabout partymatters on Inter-net platforms like blogs,Facebook or Twitter. Advaniwho had quit all his partyposts had in his blog likened

has asked leaders to freely airtheir views only at internalparty forums rather than airthem publicly.Sangh sources disclosed
that its point men, organiza-tional secretaries Shyam Laland Suresh Soni could be re-called back to its fold. Ac-cording to sources the style offunctioning of Soni has left abitter taste amongst quite afew senior BJP leaders whowanted the Sangh to recallhim. FOR a while now strange stories aboutShri Lal Krishna Advani have circulatedon Delhi’s political grapevine. Stories of
how visitors to his house in Prithviraj Roadare obliged towatch the latest documentariesmade by his daughter before they can discussanything political. Stories of howhe has takento bursting into tears for no reason. Stories ofhow he seems deeply embittered about life.Stories of how he surrounds himself withcourtiers who praise him all day long andhow this has led to him becoming more thanslightly deluded about his future political ca-reer. I have listened to these stories with sad-ness because on a personal level I havealways had the deepest respect for Mr. Ad-vani. I was very touched that after my book,‘Durbar’, came out at the end of last year hecalled me and told me howmuch he had en-joyed reading it. Even when I have been intotal disagreement with his politics, as I wasduring his rathyatra days, I have never lost re-spect for him. Can I say this any more withhonesty?
Will no longer be taken seriouslyNo I cannot and I feel bad admitting it be-
cause even as I do so images of him as heonce was drift before my eyes. I rememberhim as he was when he first became aminis-ter in the Janata Party government in 1977. Iremember him from travels on his various ya-tras and I remember once being on a smallaeroplane with him when the pilot lost hisbearings and it seemed for a while that wewould never find the landing strip on whichwe were to land for an election rally. In theyears that I have known him I have been im-pressed by his qualities of humility, integrityand decency. Qualities that are rare in Indianpoliticians so when he did what he did afterthe BJP’s decision at its Goa conclave to ap-point Narendra Modi as head of its electioncampaign I felt almost personally betrayed. Ifound it hard to believe that he could havegone out of his way to destroy the politicalparty that he had led for so long. And, for what? After one day of hysterical
panel discussions on our news channels, anda few hours of schadenfreude in Congress cir-cles, Advani took back his resignation letterand the story died. When political commen-tators sat down to examine the fallout of Ad-
vani’s resignation what they mostly con-cluded was that he had done more harm tohimself than to his former protégé, NarendraModi. Since there is no retirement age in In-dian politics he will undoubtedly continue tobe an elder statesman in the BJP and con-tinue to be seen in the political arenas ofDelhi but hewill no longer be taken seriously.Meanwhile, the damage that he sought to dotoModi has been done to the BJP and insteadof getting into campaignmode senior leaderswill have to spendmost of their time on dam-age control. This will not be easy.Modi is hated bymost
journalists working in the national media sothey have taken great pleasure in pronounc-ing that if he can have such a polarising effectwithin his own party he will certainly destroythe NDA (National Democratic Alliance). No
sooner did Advani take back his resignationletter than the English news channels beganto speculate about whenNitish Kumarwouldwithdraw the JanataDal (United) from the al-liance. There is the additional problem thatmost political pundits from academia areeven more leftist than us hacks so they hateModi even more than we do. They say this isbecause of what happened in Gujarat in 2002but you only need to scratch a little to dis-cover that beneath that veneer lies the realreason. They hate Modi most of all becausehe has been articulating an economic visionfor India that is the direct opposite of the onethat the Congress Party has followed formostof its years in power. They hate the way in which he talks about
aiming for a prosperous India instead of justone inwhich poverty removal is the goal. And,to demolish his ideas they spout so-calledstatistics that seek to prove that Gujarat hasnot done as well as Modi says it has. Any ca-sual visitor to Gujarat cannot fail to notice thenew roads and the new prosperity in the vil-lages but academics rarely bother to travelout of Delhi so they base their opinions on in-formation that they claim is from the Plan-ning Commission.Modi’s political opponentschoose to attack him differently by assertingas often as possible that he has been chiefminister of a state that has always been pros-perous so no credit should go to him.
Damage done more to himselfModi is the firstmajor political leader since
Jawaharlal Nehru who has articulated a cleareconomic vision. It is a vision that is almostthe exact opposite of the one that Nehru be-lieved in and it is this that attracts young peo-ple in our cities because it is a vision ofprosperity in which he emphasises gover-nance rather than government. Indian busi-nessmen are drawn to Gujarat exactlybecause he has succeeded in implementinghis ideas in that state so that it has become aplace that is investor friendly at a time wheninvestors are fleeing our shores in search offriendlier climes. To articulate his vision in the coming elec-
tion campaignModiwill need the full supportof the BJP’s workers and its organisationalmachinery. What Advani has managed to do,albeit temporarily, is to disable this machin-ery by creating the impression that there is adeep rift within it over the leadership ofModi. The truth is that the rank and file of the partyis solidly behind Modi and it was because ofthis that the BJP’s senior leaders were forcedto elevate him. If Advani had stood his groundand attempted to break the BJP the only peo-ple who would have gone with him wouldhave been a handful of aged leaders who canbarely win their own seats but now that hehas taken his resignation letter back we willnever know for sure. In any case the damagehe has really done is to himself. No longer willit be easy for ordinary BJP workers to see himas the patriarch that he has been revered asdespite leading the party into defeat in twosuccessive general elections in 2004 and 2009.

Why is the UPA government hellbent on bringing an ordinance
with regard to the Food Security Bill? The monsoon assembly session isscheduled to be held late in July. There should be discussion on theissue: In fact when it came before thestanding committee of parliament, some amendments were moved butthere was no discussion on them. This is a very important bill and it isabsolutely necessary a discussionshould take place in parliament. There is widespread speculation
with regard to the hurried decision ofthe government to skip the introduc-tion of the bill in the assembly. Thereis an opinion that the governmentwill not be able to muster a majorityin the House for a vote on the bill. The Samajwadi Party is not likely tosupport the government. This partyis opposed to the measure with re-gard to food security – as preparedby the government. Evidently thegovernment does not want to takeany risk. Another reason for the gov-ernment’s hurried intention to issuethe ordinance could be it wants toadvance the poll date. The government’s hurried pro-
posal is clearly to gain a poll advan-tage. It looks like it as prepared tobreak all rules to achieve its objec-tive. Finally, has the government gotready arrangements required for im-plementing the scheme? And has itgot funds – thousands of crores –herded subsidised food items to 69crore people?

A defeated patriarch
Wemust generate in our hearts a certainamount of ‘spiritual enthusiasm’, and
then we can readily ‘remember’ our chosengoal constantly. If the constant awareness ofthe goal is blazing in the highways of ourmind, then in our hurried living and therush of events and happenings we will not, even accidentally, run out catering to theidle demands of the mind and thus fallagain unwillingly into some new sets ofclinging attachments, expecting happinessfrom the acquisition and possession of, andindulgence in, the world. The constant re-membrance of our goal will serve as asteady warning light, and it will guide usaright steadily on our pilgrimage through allthe day-to-day contentions of the busy bru-tal life in the community! Thus, once shraddha, the ‘sincere urgency’
formastering themindhasmanifested inus, spiritual ‘enthusiasm’ in applying ourselvesto its achievement immediately follows, andwhere there is this ‘enthusiasm’ we cannotbut steadily ‘remember’ our determinedgoal. When a seeker lives in the constant re-membrance of his ideal-to-be-attained, his‘concentration’ grows. The capacity of the mind to entertain
consistently one idea, to the exclusion of all
dissimilar thought, is called concentration. This single-pointed,mental self-applicationto an exclusive idea becomes inevitable in aseeker who remembers his goal constantly. For our spiritual conquests, the force weemploy is our single-pointed concentration. But however large one’s army is, its strengthlies in the education, culture and disciplineof its members. Else the army may win thebattle yet lose the war by its own victoriousexcesses. Similarly, ‘concentration’ is the se-cret weapon which we must have to stormthe citadel of truth; but this weapon in an
impure heart may convert all its successesinto a suicidal self-annihilation. Therefore,we must cultivate the ethical and moralvirtues side by side, and a bosom rich inthese glorious traits alone can use its pow-ers of concentration for the creative pro-grams of mastering the mind.Values of life which arise only in our con-
tact with others in society constitute ourstrategy and policy, regulating and beauti-fying all our relationships with others. Therishis of yore experimentedwith these. They
came to prescribe the right attitude towardsgiven specific types of challenges. Thus, friendliness towards happy ones, kindnesstowards unhappy ones, joyous enthusiasmtowards the virtuous and the righteous, dis-regard towards sensuous sinners’ are pre-scribed as the healthy attitudes to becultivated andmaintained by all seekers. Inthis way we learn to involve ourselves withgood, commit ourselves to the righteous, and avoid all the evil influences of the sinful.By bringing up our personality in this
way, in the very contentious and competi-tive market-place of life and in the midst ofits tensions, we can spiritually grow andgather more and more steadiness of mind, called purity of the inner-equipment.With-out a steadymind spiritual explorations areindeed impossible. Friendliness, kindness, etc. are values of healthy relationships;when practiced for a sufficiently long timethey will lead the intelligent seeker to dis-cover in himself a steadiermind on his con-templation seat. When the seeker has, asexplained so far, eliminated fromhimself allclinging attachments (asakti) to and thirst(trishna) for the world, he will find that hisconcentration proportionately increases.
— Swami Chinmayananda

Bad phase in Indian cricketTHE dice was heavily loadedagainst GurunathMeiyappan in theIPL 6match and spot fixing. He wasmade to spend some days in Mum-bai jail and that was bad news forfather-in-law Srinivasan, the ex-BCCI president and now made toshed his post in themurky IPL deal. The secret diary may open up aPandora’s Box still further. It isproved beyond doubt that IPL is nogentleman’s game. If you are stillbrave and reckless in betting thencontact the team owners for betterprospects. The game of cricketneeds total cleaning and unless theGovernment interferes, nothing isgoing to make the game get thesame popularity as in the past.

Women’s health tipsAS we find more and more womenare prone to cervical cancer andthat is causing concern. It is betterto have best hygiene and not to usepublic toilets as far as possible. Theconcept of annual physical examshas not become common in Indiabut in the US andmany other west-ern nations, women aremandated to undergo anAnnual Wellness Exam. The concept is slowly spreadinghere but only in the metros. Even ifyou don’t undergo a comprehensiverange of tests, ensure that you doorder Pap Smear, twice a year. Many voluntary organizations andsome hospitals too have startedhosting cervical cancer check-upcamps. Please use them to your ad-vantage to get tested easily and af-fordably.

LETTER OFTHE DAY
L.K. ADVANI has been playinggimmicks as he seems to besquealing at the anointment ofNarendra Modi by the BJP andsuffering from the feeling that heis losing a fortune. He is missing avalid point in that the party work-ers were unanimously vociferousfor Modi to lead the campaignand also become the PM. They arealso of the firm opinion that onlyModi and none other is capable ofprevailing over the corrupt Con-gress and are hence very particu-lar about the candidature of Modi.Advani who had earlier resigned
from all important posts in BJPfondly hoping that BJP shall nose-dive and grovel, perceived to hisdismay that there were no takersfor his demands and had to in-evitably withdraw his resigna-tions. Shri Advani, who is 85,should remind himself that ‘re-spect’ is to be ‘earned’ and ‘notdemanded’ and conduct himselfin a responsible way like a ‘states-man’ and should not stoop downto be despised, as of today, for hisgreed and incredulous nature ondisplay.
—T.M.Uday Shankar,Mumbai

SO, a compromise formula ap-pears to have been arrived atwhich may lead to an uneasytruce between the two warringfactions in the BJP. However, thedeep dent created by this resigna-tion dramamust have left a severedent in the minds of even the die-hard supporters of the saffronbrigade which the Hindutva partywould find difficult to heal. Thecommitted voters of the Partymust be having second thoughtsabout electing such representa-tives who, even before beingsworn-in, enter into factionalfights over some ridiculous issues.

L.K. ADVANI, the patriarch ofBharatiya Janata Party is a sadman today, politically! Advaniji’scheckered political career, laterhow he was being ignored andmarginalised by the party rank
and file and now finally his igno-minious exit from his nurturedparty encapsulate a depressedstory of an isolated politician whooverlooked to read the writings onthe wall! His personal contribution in
pulling the party from an abysmaltwo parliamentary seats to 185seats is really praiseworthy. And,none of the present party stal-warts can lose sight of the factthat Advaniji was instrumental forthe current astronomical popular-ity rise of Narendra Modi.
Wake up from your sulking, Ad-vaniji, the party and the nationdesperately need you!

THIS is with reference to the re-port ‘RSS pacifies Advani’ (ADC,June 12). I am inclined to believethat, far from pacifying, Nagpurhas in fact directed the octogenar-ian Advani to either “patch up orpack up” in no uncertain terms, making it clear that it is nowthe time for the Gujarat strong-man to take centre stage, remind-ing him in the process that he hashad his chances and positions ofpower and so should not aspirefor more eternally. Fair enough, but the intriguing question is: “Arethere no capable leaders in theparty in Delhi who can be trustedwith the job of campaigning forthe 2014 Lok Sabha polls if not thecandidature for the primemin-
stership?” Among the availablecrop, a lot of them have been min-isters, with one even a past chiefminister of Delhi and is it not nat-ural that all of them will feel in-sulted by the party supercedingthem by importing someone fromoutsdie for electioneering?
—Dr.V. Subramanyan, Thane

AS reported, it is indeed veryshocking and disturbing to noteL.K. Advani had resigned from all
party posts which is indeed veryharmful and a rather lethal doseto BJP. It is just like digging its owngrave particularly when nationalelection is around the corner. Itwill be a great boon to Congressparty and its coast is clear forpolls. Advani should have realisedhowmuch damage his irresponsi-ble action could cause to BJPwhich was nurtured by him forsuch a long time. Matured, wiseand experienced as he is, he couldhave solved the differences ami-cably. He should have realisedthat nothing is permanent in thisworld and it is a universal fact thatold gives place to new. However, now that Advani has relented, theBJP has not lost everything exceptit’s credibility.

WITHDRAWAL of resignation byBharatiya Janata Party (BJP) sen-
ior leader L.K. Advani at the in-stance of RSS chief Mohan Bhag-wat from Nagpur proves that allthe decisions of the BJP is beingtaken by RSS and it controls BJPthrough remote control in all thedecisions and it has exposed theworking of the BJP and its partyleadership, particularly L.K. Ad-vani who took the U-turn within36 hours and withdrew his resig-nation to surrender himself to RSSto make the Narendra Modi strongin the party for the 2014 generalelections. I strongly feel that if Ad-vani has some dignity and credi-bility to his position and post, heshouldimmediately retire from activepolitics for loweringthe image of himself and theparty, rather than sticking to thechair to get humiliated by youngparty leaders like Modi and otherswith false promises.
—Bhagwan Thadani,Mumbai

EVEN before the mehndi ofNarendra Modi‘s appointmenthas dried up, BJP patriarch L.K.Advani resigned from all posts. This is just the beginning, which Idid expect. There is more to fol-low. Like Mr. Advani, there aremany in BJP who do not agree butcannot speak up like Advani. It isunfortunate that BJP Presidentcould not visualise the drawbackof this appointment, particularlywhen JD(U) has been saying if heis the primeministerial candidate, they will walk out of NDA. Proba-bly Modi has literally bribed Raj-nath Singh with big election fundsfrom the industries/businesshouses in Gujarat whom he hashelped. Even now it’s not too lateto mend and Rajnath Singhshould see the big writing on thewall and retract this if he wants tosee NDA/BJP in power in2014. The UPA/ Congress is in avery bad shape and does not havethe chance of coming back exceptif there is no alternative (TINA). Itis this TINA that the Congress isconfident of in 2014.
—Sharad Kumar,Mumbai

THE BJP, by its ownmaking, hasbecome the ‘butt of ridicule’ in theeyes of other parties. L.K. Advani,Bhishmpitamah of BJP, is on thebed of arrows. But, the irony, inboth the cases, (Mahabharat andBJP) is that their own shishyas areresponsible with only one differ-ence that Bhishma was happywith Arjuna but Advani is angrywith Modi. It is fateful that Advanihad to see the situation which hehimself created. If one promotes awrong person, he (wrong person)will always do harm. If milk is of-fered to a serpent, only poison willincrease. It may be recalled thatthe then primeminister, Vajpayeewanted Modi to resign after 2002Ahmedabad pogrom. But, Advani,in order to humiliate Vajpayee, sent Arun Jaitley to Ahmedabad todissuade Modi from resigning andrest is history. As Digvijay Singh said, Modi is a
person who chops off the handsthat help him. He (Modi) wasruthless and he wants to be one.He believes in dictatorship.

BY declaring the Gujarat ChiefMinister Narendra Modi as chair-man of its Election CampaignCommittee for the 2014 polls, amove considered just short ofmaking him the primeministerialcandidate, the Bharatiya JanataParty, (BJP), has unfolded its realface. The 2002 Gujarat genocidewherein more than 2,000 Muslimswere massacred in the state underModi’s rule is a big blot on himwhich can never be washed away. The so called aura of developmentin Gujarat is nothing but falla-cious and attempt by Modi andhis supporters to reshape hisimage as a champion of develop-ment from being a mass mur-derer. The coming 2014 Lok Sabhaelections, the electorate will givepeople like Modi and his party abefitting reply and stop Modi inhis tracks before he unleashes hisdestructive policies at the na-tional level to bring miseries tomillions of people of this greatcountry called Bharat.
—Mohd Ziyaullah Khan, Nagpur
U-TURN! RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat succeeded in convincing L.K. Advani thatresigning from the party posts is not a solution, but will only be detrimental to theparty and its prospects in the 2014 polls.
Finding no takers for his gimmick, Advani relents
THE inaugural showers of 2013(June beginning) and the down-pour in the last couple of dayshave exposed the “monsoon-readiness” of the BMC and othercivic bodies. With a downpourthat lasted a couple of hours, many places of Central Railwayand city suburbs, were flooded. The photographs in the newspa-pers were just too shocking, con-sidering that it was just the “firstshowers”!The assurances by all the top
officials that there will be noflooding have been belied, yetagain. The huge amounts said tobe spent on drainage work androad repairs (especially) seem tohave gone wasted. The state government, MMRDA
and BMC have not taken earnest
efforts to stop water logging, since the main problems weredug-up roads, uncovered man-
holes, protruding cables, moundsof uncleared garbage and debrisstrewn around every street.Wewill now pray that there is no re-peat of 26/7.

Lesson 18: Give it yourbest
“My father’s determination and
dedication towards work is
unparalleled. I have imbibed his
values in my work and that has
contributed in me building goodwill
in my career as well.”

Lesson 21: Maintainyour simplicity
“My dad taught me to be simple at

cherish, since he’s been the backbone andsupport for what I am today.”
Sayali Bhagat (29), actor
Lesson 7: Don’t chase success
“My father is a self-made man, who learntthings the hard way. So, he made sure that Ididn’t face similar hardshipsand he has been by myside, advising me andnever getting offendedby my failures. Lesson 9: Worldly wisdom
“To most people, he’s Thakur BirendraBikram Singh Bais of erstwhile Banswara, someone they will proudly say lives “here” asyou approach from a 5km radius. To me, he’sdad. I’ve missed him and hislessons (steeped in ourrich Rajput history), butthey stand the test oftime. He told me it’sgood I have a face thathas graced magazinecovers, but moreimportantly, it’s good thatI have brains. He taught methat the only way to be independent isthrough knowledge and wisdom. He alsotaught me that if I have to stab someone, Ishould always have the courage to do sofrom the front as only a coward does so fromthe back. He also taught me to remember therule ‘first among equals.’”
Anjhula Mya Singh Bais, internationalmodel and psychologist
Lesson 10: Be yourself
“Since I was a little girl, I’ve been told thatI’m just like my father. I have always tried toemulate him. Rani (29), RJ on Big FM
Lesson 11: Live big
“My father taught me to be brave and toalways find happiness in any situation. Hetold me that every child, whether girl or boy,
has the ability to do somethingbig in life and one shouldcherish their existence. He told me life isbeautiful and weshould live it kingsize. He made melaugh when I was sadand always managed to
bring a smile to my face.He embodies the meaning of
happiness and I thank him for all that he hasdone for me.”
Yamini (27), RJ on Big FM
Lesson 12: never say “can’t”
“One of the most important lessons myfather has taught me is that ‘can’t’ means‘don’t want to’. Every timemy sister and I said wecouldn’t dosomething, he alwaystold us to haveconfidence and faith, because you reallycan do anything if yougive it your all. He’s myrockstar and I want him toknow that I’m grateful to him for alwaysbeing there for me.”

Lesson 13: Kick ass!
“Fathers are thinking of teaching self-defense to their daughters now, but myfather taught me to be able to defend myselfalmost two decades ago. I was five when my

Lesson 14: open your mind

But,my first brush with ‘good’ literature wasbecause of him.”
Purnima Singh (23), media planningexecutive
Lesson 15: eat smart

Even insupermarkets (it gets a little irritatingsometimes!), he wouldn’t buy anything newwithout reading a label. When it comes tohealthy grocery shopping, no one can foolme. All thanks to Papa!”
Nirbhika Sharma (30), homemaker
Lesson 16: Penny wise
“I’ve been born and brought up in a middleclass family and because my mother passedaway when we were very young, dad had totake charge of the household. We siblingsstill marvel at how dad used to fulfill all ourneeds with his modest income. He has aknack when it comes to saving money andused to do it with such smoothness anddiscretion. I have learned how to save andspend my income wisely from my dad.”
Shamoly Chandran (28), dentist
Lesson 17: Be ambitious
“I am a very ambitious individual and I’velearned that from my father. Since I was 12,my father always reinforced the idea ofbuilding a strong career. He used to say thatin any circumstance, she should be able tosustain herself. It’s a lesson that has stuckwith me till date.”

«Neha dhUpia We think that this was the look poor
Prachi was going for. Neha’s outfit is
cool and simple and we like it that
she went easy on the makeup. The
focus is on her wedge sneakers and
of course, her support for desi dogs —
the main reason her outfit and

« CELEB HIT OR MISS: GLYNDA ALVES IS SHOCKED BY THE “FASHION” ON DISPLAY THIS WEEK
«jUhi chawla At first glance we liked this seemingly
demure outfit. But, on closer
inspection, the bling everywhere just
made Juhi’s look go downhill. While
the sparkly shoes add a nice touch,
that sequinned high neck bib is
simply overkill.
«pRachi deSai Sporty spice from the waist up and
society lady from the waist down,
Prachi Desai’s look is boggling. This
outfit is trendy in Hollywood now and
stars pair the look with wedge
sneakers — not just wedges. Read
fashion mags properly, Prachi!
«madhURi diXiT There’s no doubting that Madhuri is
one of the most beautiful women in
Bollywood. But, her outfit is making
us doubt her sense of style... and
eyesight. This is taking the hi-low
trend too far and frankly, it looks a bit
silly on this demure star. 2. FoR yoUR FeliNe Side

Viange has a wide selection of brooches and mostly all
are in floral designs. We picked this one because it’s
different from the run-off-the-mill gold roses and pretty

interesting, edgy look.

« JUST OUT!NyaSSa Soap
When the soaps arrived on our beauty desk, it was hard
not to get mesmerised by their scent. Other soaps can
rarely match the aroma that handmade, natural soaps
give out — there was not a trace of anything chemical or
artificial smelling in them. What we like about Nyassa is
that it is one of the few manufacturers whose products are
100% vegetarian. We tried the Mandarin Citrus soap and
the Green Apple soap that smelled good enough to bite
into. The mandarin soap has an intense scent and lathers
well; it’s mildly exfoliating and helps remove dead skin and
tightens pores. After a shower, the scent managed to
linger. However, the apple, while great, has a mild smell
that is great while showering but doesn’t last long.
However, it’s super gentle on the skin and lathers
luxuriously. The shea butter also moisturises, which leaves
your skin supple. Other flavours include coffee,
sandalwood, alphonso mango and several other
tempting scents.

The new range of creams from Westside
had me all excited, especially the rose
scented one because it didn’t have an
overpowering rose scent and looked as
delicious as cotton candy. The cream
has good quantity and is not heavily
priced, which is a plus point. On
application however, the cream was
extremely greasy and my skin took a
very long time to absorb it. This means
that you’re walking around with greasy
arms and legs for at least a couple of
hours, which isn’t comfortable. The
scent does not linger and the cream is
only slightly moisturising. It’s effective in
keeping dryness away but I wouldn’t pick
it up again.

Have there been times when you’ve goneshopping with your girlfriends, pickedup a piece that you liked, asked them fortheir opinions and they say: “Don’t you
already have that navy blue jacket?” or “Isn’t thissimilar to the black pumps that you already have?”Despite your wardrobe being elaborate, nothingseems to be new in there. You open your closet, find nothing worth wearing, go shopping andafter stacking your new clothes in there neatly, stillcan’t find anything to wear! This is probablybecause you are stuck in a style rut. We give you 10 ways to upgrade your wardrobe and look like abrand new you every day.
BRiNg iN The miNT
You have to have something in mint in yourwardrobe. The colour adds an instant touch offreshness to your range of clothes. Minttransforms a dull outfit into an eye-catching one.If you want to wear the colour in more than oneway, buy a mint jacket. That way you can wear itover a blouse, dress or a pair of pants. A mintcoloured top paired with a white pair of pants is a classic.
FRillS & RUFFleS
Frills and ruffles, whether on a top or dress, aremaking waves this season. They don’t only providea cute twist to your garb, but give your attire a veryyoung and carefree look — one of the importantelements that you require to slip in into yourboring wardrobe.
FloweR poweR
Floral prints have been a hit since last year andwill continue to be trendy in the coming months.
They are feminine, flirty and add colour to yourwardrobe. If you’re not a big fan of floral prints, make them visible on the fringes. Carry a floralhandbag, buy floral shoes or accessories.
doN’T SNeeR aT SheeR
Sheer tops or tops that have sheer sleeves are a bighit this season. However, we aren’t suggesting youto go all out with shiny undergarments below asheer black a la Katrina Kaif. Wear a camisole ofthe same colour, pair it with skinny jeans or a pairof denim shorts and ballet flats and you have astylish, pulled together look.
layeR yoUR STRiNgS
The jewellery that you wear with your outfit alsomakes a huge difference and a simple piece cantransform your entire look. If your outfit is simple, layer long strings of necklaces together to up thedull look. But, make sure that all of them are notvery heavy or chunky pieces. Apart from that, youcan also wear a statement piece around your neck. You don’t have to spend a bomb on these. Justwalk through Linking Road in Bandra or ColabaCauseway and you’ll find plenty.
BliNg a RiNg
Large statement rings have been a hit since themiddle of last year and they continue to save yourdrab outfit. There is a lot of diversity and a similaramount of repetition in the stuff that’s available inthe market. Try to avoid rings that have too manytiny stones encrusted in them as they lose theirsheen soon or are not glued properly and fall off ina few weeks. Also, steer clear of owl, elephant andheart motifs. They are common in a yawn-inducing way.
NeoN Nymph
You have to have been living under a rock to notknow that this trend has hit big recently and how! From neon tops, belts, accessories to neon shoesand makeup — neon’s sweeping through allsections of fashion. If too much neon hurts youreye or you aren’t comfortable wearing it, theninclude hints of neon in your look such as neonpumps, a necklace, bangles or even a large ring.
jaNgle ThoSe BaNgleS
You might not have noticed, but bangles give youroverall look a very ethnic yet modern touch andcan be worn not just on Indian outfits, but alsowith dresses and jeans. With the assortmentavailable in the market, mix and match. You canalso get a great statement cuff that will definitelystand out.
pUmp ThoSe NUdeS
Nude is the new black when it comes to footwear. But if that’s the case, why would you opt for nudeover black? You might argue that black goes withany colour, but so does nude. And nude presentlymeans fashion forward as well. So, buy a pair ofnude pumps, peep toed sandals or wedges andgive your predictable black a break for a while.
moNochRome
If you’re stuck in a style rut, chances are that youhave a lot of black and white in your closet. Don’tcompletely disregard your old clothes becauseyou can pull off the trendy monochrome stylewith items you already have. However, to makeyour look stylish, you need to add a splash ofcolour to your outfit.

I am good friends with one of
my co-workers. She is a
dedicated and bright employee,
but she’s a little innocent. She
doesn’t have the courage to
stand up for something, no
matter how it might be
troubling her. She was recently
dumped with a pile of work and
being on the same team as her,
I know it’s too much for one
person to handle. However,
she’s not complaining. I would
really like to help her. What can
I do?
— paromita das, kharghar
dear paromita
We understand how you want
to stand up for your friend, but
our recommendation is that
you do not do that. While it
might seem natural to you, your
boss might not appreciate you
raising the issue instead of her.
What you should do is have a
talk with her. Tell her that if she
wants to survive the corporate
set up, she will have to learn to
identify and fight her own
battles. Give her the courage to
raise the issue. And in case you
have a casual environment at
office and your boss is open to
everyone, you can go and talk
on her behalf. But, do that only
after she has had at least one
discussion with the boss about
her workload.
I have been working in a large
firm for about eight months
and there’s a lot of back biting
and bitching. There are many
groups and cliques in office
and I’ve started integrating
myself in a few. However, the
members of one particular
group don’t like me mingling
with several groups and so,
they have started taunting me
and passing snide comments
about it. I think I should stop
talking to them. What do you
suggest?
— Jigisha devram, chembur
dear Jigisha,
Have you regressed to your
college ragging days? It sure
seems like that. You are a
woman who can talk to
whoever you feel like without
anybody passing snide
remarks. If this particular group
has been taunting and bullying
you regarding the same, we
suggest you stop hanging out
with them completely. But,
make sure that you are friendly
with people from the other
groups before making that
move, lest you become lonely
at work. If you listen to them
this time and concede, their
domination is only going to
keep increasing.

ferrAgAmo wAtches Salvatore Ferragamo has come out with a new
range of brightly coloured watches that are eye-
catching. The watches are in line with the season’s
colour blocking trend and feature three colours
that symbolise pop culture: lime yellow, bright red
and turquoise. The watches are made with a steel
case for the dial that is colour co-ordinated with
the strap. The best part about the collection is that
the watches come with a spare strap that matches
the colour of the second hand, taking colour
contrasting to a whole new level. For example, the
turquoise coloured dial will come with a spare, red
coloured strap that matches the colour of the
second hand.

b) You are on the right track. He obviously likes heavy Indian snacks. Cook him
something special and casually share your lunch. The rainy season is the best
time for boyfriend stealing.
c) You had a lovely time. Leave it at that. Let him make a move.

Ronak and I work in the same production house. I think he’s very
cute and I want him to be my boyfriend! We chat a lot, but it’s
mostly about work. That day it was raining and I saw him standing
at the bus stop. I let my umbrella stay in my bag and ran to him...

dear grace,I’ve been dating a guy for a little over a month
and it’s going great. But, my problem is that
every time we go out, he gets me a present.
It’s nothing big or expensive — just chocolate,
a magazine or a flower. The first few times I
felt bad because I didn’t have anything to give
him. He told me he didn’t want anything and
just liked giving me stuff he thinks I would
like. I’m feeling burdened by this and I feel
like I’m obligated to get him something. How
do I deal with this?
— Janna, Bandra
dear Janna,
Ah! The first flush of love. If the boy wants to
give you presents (they aren’t elaborate
gifts, so it’s fine) and doesn’t want anything
in return, then that’s okay. But, while he
isn’t asking for gifts in return, make sure
you don’t feel pressurised into taking the
relationship further just because he’s
showering you with presents. If his
intentions seem honest, and I’m inclined to
go that way, then enjoy this phase while it
lasts. Just don’t get too used to all the
present-giving because it will taper down
and eventually stop. And hopefully, you
won’t miss these gestures too much.

From a pat on your back to a tightsqueeze, a hug is a universal indicatorof love, friendship and comfort. However, all hugs don’t mean the
same thing. Some hugs can be so awkwardthat you wonder why you ventured into thegiver’s arms in the first place. And some hugscan be very short but filled with affection. Here’s a guide to the different types of hugsand what they reveal.
The Back hug
This is the type of hug that surprises you.Your man comes up from behind and wrapshis arms firmly around you. Even if he hasn’tsaid it yet, this hug is from a man who is inlove with you. He’s covering your body withhis, which means he wants to shelter andprotect you. However, be careful if your guyalways hugs you from the back. This couldmean that he wants to be close but is afraidyou’re not into him.
The RuB hug
We know this sounds kind of creepy, but it’ssimply your man holding you and gentlystroking your back at the same time. This hugindicates that he cares deeply about you andthat the two of you have a strong connection. However, if the rubbing slowly startsintensifying, you might want to take yourhug somewhere private because your manhas other things on his mind. If the strokesseem erratic, it could mean that your guy isworried about something. So, hug him backand ask him if everything is okay.
The Thump
Yes, that was probably your heart falling tothe floor. When your guy thumps or pats yourupper back during an embrace it could meana lot of things. And they’re not all good. Thefirst thing is that he’s just not into you. This isthe type of hug he reserves for his buddies, not his girlfriend. When he does this in thecompany of friends, he might be doing it toshow that he’s not fully committed to you. Ifhe does it in private, he’s probably not feelingthe love anymore. However, if the thump isjust a one off thing and it only happens inpublic, it could just mean he’s not into PDA.Wait and watch, sister.
The WRap
He tightly grasps your lower back and pullsyou towards him. Looks like you’re going toget lucky tonight! This is the type of hug youshould only get from the man in your life. Ifsomeone else hugs you like this, punch theguy. However, if your man is dishing out thistype of hug it shows that he’s keen. The lowerthe hands go, the more fired up he is.
head To head
When you’ll hug, does he put his foreheadagainst yours? If yes, apart from wanting toconnect physically, your man also wants tomerge your minds together. If you’re in a newrelationship, it’s safe to say you’re more thana casual fling. If you’ll have been together forsome time, it shows that he’s emotionally andmentally committed to you.
The swollen clouds anddull skies indicate that
cuddling is on the cardsthis monsoon. But, have
you ever wonderedwhat his hugs mean?

The umbrella was doing us no good. And the bus just did not show up.
So, to escape from the rain, we ran into a nearby coffee shop and had
hot chocolate while shivering from being soaked and waiting for the
rain to subside.

I feel like a bucket

We must have chatted for about two hours. It was so nice talking to

family, our interests, hobbies and more. And it had stopped raining at
least half an hour earlier, but we still continued chatting. I can’t

What made Ekta Kapoorcast you as ‘Akbar’?Ekta has found the ideal blend ofboyish innocence and ruggedmanliness required of Akbar in me.For Akbar, she wanted an actor whois a boy-man. Although I had theinnocence of a 19-year-old I amalso mature as an actor. Akbar wassomeone who became a soldierand a king at the age of 14 and by17, he had already won a battle onhis own and I am also an expert inmartial arts and horse riding. So Iwas perfect for the role and I wasselected.
Have you seen AshutoshGowarikar’s film ‘Jodha
Akbar’?No. I deliberately refrained fromseeing it since I didn’t want to beinfluenced in any way and wantedmy portrayal of Akbar to be totallyoriginal.
How do you feel workingwith the cast?We have just started shooting and Iam eager to shoot with ParidhiSharma who plays Jodha. Theensemble cast of the show includes
prominent actors such as AshwiniKalsekar playing Mahamanga, apivotal mother figure in Akbar’s lifewho saved him from the clutches ofdeath across many a battle. ChetanHansraj will play the role of AdhamKhan, the mighty son ofMahamanga who has an eye on theMughal throne.

Anand Rathi calls a ‘Buy’ on KNR ConstructionsCMP: Rs. 77 Target Rs. 115Order book visibility low: KNR Constructions’ (KNR) has an order book of Rs20bn (2.9x TTM revenue), after deducting Rs 6.8bn order from GVK. In FY13,it bagged orders of Rs 10bn, and is aiming at another Rs 13bn in FY14.Management is geared up to bid for upcoming EPC contracts from NHAI andis currently negotiating with private developers for orders. Apart from roads,it is also focused on diversifying into urban infra, irrigation and bridges.
Revenues likely to improve: For FY13, the company’s revenue declined 8%yoy, despite receiving Rs 480m early-completion bonus (Bijapur-Hungund tollroad). Most of the benefit of the bonus was lost as a lot of equipment was idleduring the year. In 4QFY13, however, revenue grew 41% yoy, higher than weestimated, following strong project execution in Karnataka and Nagpur. Withexecution now picking up at its Kerela project (own BOT), management isaiming at revenue of Rs 9bn for FY14.
EBITDA margin to stabilize: For FY13, KNR clocked EBITDA margin of 16.4%(vs 17.7% in FY12). We estimate margins to be maintained at ~16.5% overthe next two years, backed by strong revenue growth.
Update on BOT projects: In May’13, KNR completed financial closure onthe Kerala project. So far, it has invested equity of Rs 700m (of the total Rs1.36bn committed), funded through internal accruals (Rs 300m) and loans (Rs 400m). Moreover, the company has obtained all environmental andforest clearances and work on the project has begun in 4QFY13. Further, it
is working on issuing NCDs to raise ~Rs 400m from its BOT project in AP, slated to be used to fund the remaining equity requirement for Keralaproject.
Our take: Strong revenue growth is likely in FY14with significant contribution of its own BOT projects. We retain Buy with TP of Rs 115. Our SOTP target isbased on 5x FY14e earnings, a 33% discount to othermidcap construction companies (Rs 105) and 1x BVof investments (Rs 10).
Geojit BNP Paribas Research calls a ‘Buy’ on V-Guard Ind.CMP: Rs. 471 Target Rs. 546V Guard Industries Ltd (VGIL), has grown its business at 38% CAGR over thelast 5 years even during tough economic scenario in the last 3 years with44%CAGR. This gives us immense confidence about its business growth.Diversified niche product profile with low penetration and expansion in non-south market will continue to be the growth driver. Given VGIL’s nicheproduct-line, competition and erosion of margins will be the highest risk. Butwe also see a very high possibility to scale-up the business with higherpenetration and more product launches. Hence we like the business profilebut given the recent price appreciation and near term margin headwinds, werecommend a ACCUMULATE rating. Niche & wide product range... withsuccessful launches: VGIL has a diversified roduct range like PVC cables, LTcables, UPS, Digital UPS, Switchgears, Induction cook tops and Mixer grinder. And has shown continues success in identifying and introducing new productlines, example: LT power cables introduced 3 yrs ago has grown at 70% CAGRto ~Rs 750mn revenues, Digital UPS + 150% CAGR to Rs l,700mn revenuesince FY10. Management expect good prospect in solar water heaters, switchgears and induction cook tops. Management’s net sales guidance is25% CAGR for FY13-FY15E, against our expectation of 22%.
Pan India Network.... customer service: VGIL has a Pan India distributionnetwork with 230 exclusive distributors, 4,000 direct dealers, 28 branchesand estimated 13,000-20,000 retailers. The average dealer addition peryr is725 in last 4 years. VGIL has 200 service centres for after sales services.Dealership is expected to grow by 15% in non-south and 10% in south.
Margins impacted... to normalise as discounts fade: Margins have reducedfrom 10.1% FY11 to 8.1% in FY13, lead by competition in a weak economy.Dealer discounts have been increased in the last 2- 3 quarters. We believethat these are one time scenario and discounts will normalise as white goods’market improves. We forecast sub-average EBITDA margin of 8.7% and 9.0%in FY14E & FY15E vs historic highs of 11%.
Valuation: VGIL is currently trading at Rs.472.5 at PE of 16.7x and 13xFY14E and FY15E earnings respectively. We value the stock at 15x on FY15Eto arrive at a target price of Rs 546. We believe a PE band of 14x - 16x willbe a better representative of its future valuation based on our earningsgrowth assumption and margin profile, which is closure to its one yearaverage PE of 16.5x. We await for the margin profile to streamlines over thenext few quarters, and recommend a ACCUMULATE rating.

TheGrowth in India’s index of in-dustrial production (IIP) hasslowed down to 2.0 % in April
from 3.4 % in the previous month.Fuel shortages, ongoing mining banin some states, delays in commis-sioning of large projects, andmoder-ation in demand continues to plagueIndia’s industrial sector.Manufactur-ing growth remainedweak at 2.8% inApril and came from only a handfulof industries. In April, the output of top 5 indus-
tries - in terms of contribution tomanufacturing growth- grew by 22.3% compared to a year ago, while theoutput of the remaining 17 industriesfell by 3.7 %. The weak and highlyconcentrated growth within the
manufacturing sector is amajor con-cern. The revival of the manufactur-ing sector is crucial for the recoveryof the service sector given its positivespill-overs to sectors such as trade, transport and finance.Among major industries, Wearing
apparel registered a high growth of86.6 % in April. If one excludes thisindustry, manufacturing growth inApril would have been 0.4 %.Capital goods growth fell sharply
to 1.0 % in April from 9.0 % in theprevious month. Consumer goodsoutput grew, aided by a growth inoutput of consumer non-durables.Consumer durables’ output, in con-trast, continued to decline for thefifth consecutive month, suggestinga weak household demand.Incidentally, shortages in coal and
natural gas led to a deceleration inelectricity output growth to 0.7 % inApril from 3.5 % in March. The power sector in India is in-
creasingly reliant on imported coaldue to shortages in domestic coalproduction. The recent depreciationof the rupee will raise the rupee costof imported coal and intensify theinput constraints being faced in elec-tricity production.Overall, output of the eight core
infra industries, having nearly 38 %weight in IIP, decelerated to 2.3 % inApril from 3.2 % in the previousmonth. A fall in coal, natural gas andfertiliser production was largely re-sponsible for the slowdown. A revivalof India’s industrial sector is contin-gent upon a turnaround in the per-formance of core industries.

The inclusion of “an ex-ternal commercial bor-rowing (ECB) facility inthe funding structure orsubstitution of the exist-ing domestic debt withan ECB facility will not,
automatically, improve the overallcredit profile of the project,” says re-search house India Ratings.According to it “While projects
may be availing loans at interest rateslower than those charged in the do-mestic market, their debt servicecommitments in rupee terms mayrise sharply if the rupee depreciates
beyond initial expectations. The cur-rent depreciating trend of INRagainst USD is likely to erode the po-tential savings expected while avail-ing the ECB facility.”Since some projects incur varying
proportions of capital in foreign cur-rency, the ECB acts as a natural hedg-ing tool for payments to vendors inforeign currency over a fairly longconstruction period. However, debtservicing remains exposed unlesshedged, which is rarely the case.Based on its portfolio of rated proj-
ects, Ind-Ra estimates a savings ofaround 6%-15% of the total debtservice obligations on account ofECB funding. These savings are, how-ever, limited to the initial three to fiveyears of debt amortisation. These en-visaged savings are helpful since theECB funding aids cash flows duringthe project’s initial ramp up stages.Notwithstanding these savings, thetotal outflow of an ECB-funded facil-ity is likely to be higher than that of afacility funded solely in the domesticcurrency. The “benefits in the initial years of

Companies With Strong FundamentalsOutperform Broader Markets
By A Business Reporter
An empirical study onthe stock price per-formance of companiesunder Crisil Research’scoverage reveals thatcompanies with strongfundamentals outper-
formed the broader markets overtwo- and five-year horizons. At thesame time, companies with moder-ate to poor fundamentals havetrailed. This is one of the few empirical
studies which link companies’ fun-damentals with long-term stock per-formance in the Indian equitymarket. The Indian equity market
has been highly volatile over thepast few years. The CNX Nifty andCNX Midcap indices are stilltrading 9% and 23%, respectively, below their 2008 highs.Despite market gyrations, some
companies demonstrated strongshare price performance, indicatingthat good investment opportunitiesdid exist.Crisil Research’s study on compa-
nies across sectors and market capi-talisation indicates that investmentin a portfolio of fundamentallystrong companies would have gener-ated market alpha (higher returnover the relevant benchmark) for eq-uity investors even during thevolatile phase.
Most Of Rupee Depreciation May Be Behind Us,Says BofA-ML
The rupee which has depreciated by 6 per cent over the past month, islikely to stay “volatile” in the near term but the worst may be behind us,Bank of America Merrill Lynch said in a research note yesterday. “We feelthat most of the depreciation may be behind us as gold imports arereducing and likely to fall given measures taken by government. Secondlyoil prices are stable and thirdly government may be forced to raise flowsthrough NRI bonds,” BofA-ML said.
Retail inflation dropsFalling for the third straight month, retail inflation stood at 9.31 % in Maydue to easing of prices of edible oil and protein-based items, even asvegetable prices inched up sharply. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) basedinflation stood at 9.39 % in April. It was 10.39 % in March. The overall foodand beverages segment saw an inflation of 10.65 % in May, higher than10.61 % in April.
MMTC 9.33% Stake Sale TodayThe group of ministers on disinvestment today cleared 9.33 per cent stakesale in MMTC through offer for sale which may fetch the exchequer Rs300 crore.”We will divest 9.33 per cent in MMTC tomorrow through OFSroute,” Disinvestment Secretary Ravi Mathur told reporters here. Thegovernment targets to raise Rs 40,000 crore from its PSU stake sale in2013-14. The government expects to raise Rs 250-300 crore through theMMTC stake sale and the base or floor price would be “nowhere near thecurrent market price”.
New Guidelines For ‘High Rise Buildings’ WelcomedThe National Real Estate Development Council (NAREDCO) has welcomedthe new guidelines issued by the Union Ministry of Environment and Forestin respect of High Rise Buildings. The guidelines would now allow greaterflexibility for state governments and local bodies, to decide on high risebuildings, based on issues such as population density, pressure on landetc. NAREDCO feels that the new guidelines will help in completion ofstalled projects and also encourage slum rehabilitation projects. It is alsoexpected to help unlock projects worth Rs. 10,000 crores approximatelywhich are stuck due to lack of clarity on the issue

LOVIN’ IT UPRe-define the meaning of loveI am in a peculiar fix. I’ve been happilymarried for five years now. However, I havenot married my first love – situationschanged and I lost faith that he loved me.Now call it fate, I met him again accidentally. He stays in a different town and I do not meethim but I miss him. Not that I do not love myhusband but I feel some feelings for him too.Is it possible to love two persons at the sametime? Should I be in touch with him throughphone calls or mail just as a friend? I’mperplexed. Help me.You say that you had felt that your first love
did not love you andtherefore you brokeup. Well, the affairended there butprobably your self-image could nottake it. Your currentfeelings for your firstlove are nothing buta need to massageyour injured pride. You want to feel that
he cares for you. You need to re-define themeaning of love in order to live a meaningfullife. True love is thinking of what you can giveto your beloved. “It is in giving that you
receive”. You say that you are happily married,so I presume that your physical and emotionalneeds are fulfilled in this relationship. In thatcase you seem to be taking your husband’slove for granted and are thinking only ofyourself and what you want. Don’t you thinkthat’s a wee bit selfish? As far as keeping intouch with your old flame is concerned I donot think it is a very good idea. You would belying to yourself if you said that it is only forfriendship. Try giving in love instead ofreceiving and you will find great joy andfulfillment in your married life. In case you arestill unable to resolve your feelings and findclarity in your life, I would strongly suggestthat you see a psychotherapist.
Phimosis and circumcisionI am 27-year-old educated guy and willget married in a few months. I have neverhad sex with anyone. I am truly a virgin. Ihave noticed that I cannot pull back foreskinon my penis properly. Is that a problem? Whatdo I do?Ideally the foreskin needs to get retracted onan erect penis, enough to expose the whole of
the glans-penis. Thismay either happenon its own on fullerection or one mayhave to do it manu-ally before penetra-tion. Both ways it isnormal and fine. Ifthe retraction of theforeskin is not possi-ble or painful, then itis a medical condition known as ‘Phimosis’.This condition requires a minor surgery knownas ‘Circumcision’. However, this can be decidedonly after a physical examination. There is always the concern of a person de-
veloping paraphimosis (a painful surgical con-dition) if the foreskin is getting retractedincompletely. So, I would advise that you getyourself examined by a surgeon.

SPORTS
Your visit to a small village, Garh Himmat Singh, Dausadistrict in Rajasthan in 2010 off the Jaipur-Agrahighway changed the face of the nondescript village. Why did you decide to instill love of hockey in a placewhere the population was miles away from the sport?I played hockey since I was six years and traveling is myprofession. So my job was to bring German tourists to India. Soit was a coincidence that I ended in the village which isbetween Jaipur and Agra. In Germany, I felt kids are overloadedwith work by playing sports or instruments and in India, I feltchildren have nothing to look up to. They either play cricket orjust sit idle. Nobody feels responsible to do something. It isworst in the villages. In that village there was nothing – theywere taking care of their little sisters or brothers but they hadnothing for themselves. So I thought of getting some sticks andsee whether they can have some fun in their life.
A foreign lady deciding to take a huge step in India bystarting this project. What were the impediments inthe course of implementing the project?I had never decided that I would open a hockey academy inIndia. It was a step by step process. I came again and againand I spread some hope and that gave me the responsibilityto take it forward. I saw that they were quite talented and theywere eager to learn. We made them watch ‘Chak De India’ tomake them understand what hockey essentially it. Earliernobody knew anything about the game. I also didn’t knowHindi so it was difficult for me also to communicate withthem. It was also quite difficult to get them to bedisciplined and in order. So I thought if I need to dosomething with them, I would have to give up my life inGermany. I thought it was a big sacrifice and I thought Iwould do it in a place which is the most fruitful. Manypeople asked me why I didn’t start this in Punjab orHaryana where there is a sports culture, but Iwanted to do it where it is most needed and is mosteffective.
What kind of opposition did youencounter while trying to start thisventure and how difficult was it toconvince their parents? In the beginning it wasn’t difficult as it was anafternoon activity. When we started taking themoutside their village to Jaipur, they startedgetting insecure. They started asking questionslike why is this German lady coming to thisvillage when she had a good life in Germany.‘What does she have to do with sports
when she is not earning money withthis and what is her motive?’ So my
Indian brother, who was travellingwith us, he made sure thatthe kids were safe with us.So as time passed thegirls started winningmatches and got amedal or certificate or
even a t-shirt, and thenslowly the parents started believing in us. It was a ‘silentrevolution’ especially for the girls. Now the girls are playing inhockey skirts, which would be unbelievable two years back.
Sourcing finance for a project like this is a humongoustask, how have you managed this project and keep itup till now? There wasn’t any support or a single rupee from the people. Ihad to sponsor the entire kit for the kids. I then started a NGOwhere my friends and family used to give money but that isn’t
sufficient anymore. Then I participated in an auto-rickshaw rally.Last year we drove from Jaipur to Chennai and this year wedrove from Jaipur to Goa to source funds and also to go to othercities where hockey is played and also to get contacts.
Many people were taken by surprise when they saw alady riding an auto-rickshaw in Mumbai. How was yourentire experience on a three-wheeler?In my culture nobody would ask if a girl or a boy rides an auto,it is only in India you would be questioned because it is a mandriven society, even more since a ‘white girl’ is driving anauto-rickshaw. They thought something is wrong and manypeople were interested why and what is the message behindit all. Especially, in Mumbai there was a big hype because youare not allowed to drive an auto in the inner-city andthen we also went to the hockey ground.
What kind of support have you receivedfrom the hockey administration in India? The Indian hockey teams are struggling, so how
can I expect help from them. If they cannot support thehighest level players in the country, they won’t do anything forthe grassroot players. In the meantime, I have goodconnections and that may help us in the future.
India has been known to produce hockey legends; doyou think that India has forgotten its roots and whatdo you think is missing in the game where we haven’tbeen able to keep up with the rest of the world? The main problem is politics is involved in sports. If you seemany of the successful sporting nations, politics is separatedfrom the game. Only sportspersons should lead theadministration because otherwise all goes wrong. It is allabout money. The German hockey team is number one in theworld, but they are not earning money from hockey. They areall doing their jobs or are students but they play with theirhearts. They are passionate with what they are doing and thisis what is lacking in India.
What are your future plans for your ‘Project Hockey’.You have also tied up with KOOH Sports to take yourproject to other cities? We are opening our own English medium school in the village.I have imported Astroturf from a German club. My idea is tohave a sports centre in that village and post that let’s see, Imay look for another village to take my project to. I would belooking to work with them to ensure we have a soundgrassroot hockey in the country.
THE GERMAN’S ‘SILENT INDIAN
INTERVIEW
ANDREA THUMSHRIN, a German hockey player has made India her home leaving Germany for good. Her stated mission is to get India back to its glory days. For that purpose, she travelled across India in
an auto-rickshaw trying to generate funds and support her project in a remote Rajasthan village.NEIL JOSHI speaks exclusively to her on this ‘Silent Revolution’ she has wrought and how she hasenlightened the minds of the young girls in the village. She speaks of her journey in transforming
children into hockey lovers, and intends to ‘stick’ it out in the long haul.
