?:y dear Urs . Roosevelt:

One of our disabled veterans who, we feel, has t alent - even genius - asked me to repr esent him in carrying out an otter be made to President Roosevelt, and which was accepted by him as you will note in the enclosed correspondence .

!Ucolaus Koni has t he Plata at h i s studio a t 41 East 60th Street, Phone REgent 4- 8367, end he would like to make a forma l presentation to you. 1.:r . Koni would l i ke t o have his carving cal led "The Roosevelt Plata,• s i nce he feels it symbol izes tte s pirit ot t he l ate President . It is his thoueht that you mi ght went to have it pl aced in t he headquarters ot the Commission on Ruman ili ghts, be cause as often quoted, "PreSident Roosevelt was truly t he fa~her of the Un i t ed l<e tions, and the Commission on Human Rights would probably have been closest to his heart.•

With yop.r sensibility, I know you will feel t he re are t wo i mportant e l ements in thi s matter: your l ate husband's des ire t o have the carvi ng, and the impet us it will give to American art .

,Your formal acceptance ot the Pieta would be a "beau ges t e• to a disabled veteran ot our Army, and a Legionnaire . Having had f irst hand experience of war's destruction - be was a fire watcher during London 's ordeal - he f eels the importance ot creating beauty. Spiri t ual strength marks his work. Like so many ot our veterans he 1s seeking to reestablish himself, and needs our encouragement.

Uiss Grace Tul ly Secretary to the President The \\'hi te House Washington, D.o.

Dear Miss Tul ly:

6 October, 1~-i

hlay I recal l to your memory the dey i n !lovember, 1942, when I bad the pleasure or visiting you in the Tihite House with the introduction or Mr . Robert Sherwood? At that time I brought with me e raw phot os of my sculpture work.

This composit ion waa inspired by our President's speech attar Pearl J arbor . I was restless until I had crested this work or mi ne, wh ich I ent i t led "The American Piets" . It is a life- sized wood carving, base-re l i ef of two fi gures SYIIIbolizins, one, the hU1118n struggle or net ions , end the other, the h\lll'.8nity or !.me rica. Originally I dedicated t hi s work to the President, as I believe he is one or the ~reatest or t he huma nitarians or today .

I shall be extremely happy if the President will accept my modes t of fer, especially at t his occasi on when the world rea lizes t hat hia l eadershi p and presidency ere vitally important for the American peopl es and for the rest or the wor ld.

I woul d be indeed grateful to you if you would kindly convey my desire to the President and le t me know his decis ion towards my work . I be l i eve t ha t ell the civilized world will agree with en artist's expr ession toward the ereat spirit or 8 l i ving humanitarianism, wilich this work of mine symbolizes .

I enclose a camp newspaper in which you will see that since I visite4 you I have volunteered to the armed services . Unfortunately, at the presen t t ime I em a patie nt in this hospital , but I belieTe it will be possible f or me to visit Washington, D.C. in the near future .

May I thank you for your kindness? Hoping to have the pleasure ,or hearing f rom you, I remain

Sincerely your a,

}v t . Nicholas 5oni , 4207667& Ward 101 - Newton D. Baker General !loe111 tal Martinsburg, \\'eat Virginia.
