St Peter’s Basilica

St Peter’s Basilica is the world’s largest Basilica of Christianity, nested into the heart of the Vatican City.

St. Peter's Basilica stands on the traditional site where Peter - the apostle who is considered the first pope - was crucified and buried. St. Peter's tomb is under the main altar and many other popes are buried in the basilica as well. Originally founded by Constantine in 324, St. Peter's Basilica was rebuilt in the 16th century by Renaissance masters including Bramante, Michelangelo and Bernini.

Sant’Agnese in Agone Sant'Agnese in Agone is a 17th century Baroque church located on the Piazza Navona in Rome, one of the main urban spaces in the historic centre of the city and the site where the Early Christian Saint Agnes was martyred in the ancient Stadium of Domitian. The name of this church is unrelated to the ‘agony’ of the martyr: in agone was the ancient name of Piazza Navona (piazza in agone), and meant instead, from the Greek, ‘in the site of the competitions’. Inside the church is a shrine for Saint Agnes, containing her skull.

St Mark's Basilica

St Mark's Basilica is a monument made unique by both its wealth of history and the magnificence of its façade and interior. It is the most famous of Venice’s churches. Considered one of the best examples of Byzantine architecture in the world, the Basilica di San Marco is known for its opulent design and gilded interior mosaics. It lies at the eastern end of the Piazza San Marco, adjacent and connected to the Doge's Palace. Originally it was the chapel of the Doge, and has only been the city's cathedral since 1807

Notre Dame de Paris The cathedral is widely considered to be one of the finest examples of French Gothic architecture, and it is among the largest and most well-known church buildings in the world. In the 1790s, Notre-Dame suffered desecration during the radical phase of the French Revolution when much of its religious imagery was damaged or destroyed. It is here that Pope Pius VII crowned Napoleon I Emperor of the French in 1804

Additional Information

CONCERT DRESS: Appropriate dress should be worn for concerts and we suggest that your usual formal concert attire is worn for formal concerts. If you do not have formal concert dress then attire should be appropriate to the venue. For performances in churches please note that: -women must have knees and shoulders covered -men must wear long trousers -men are not permitted to wear hats CATHOLIC CHURCHES: Please be reminded that when you are in Catholic Churches for rehearsals and concerts, modest and respectful behaviour is expected i.e. loud and raucous conversation, shouting and other outbursts are to be avoided. Catholic churches are always active places of prayer even when services are not being held so your peaceful respect for those who are there to pray is greatly appreciated. GIFTS: For any of your performances are Exchange Concerts where you will meet local performers, it is a nice gesture to bring a gift for the host conductor and perhaps also small tokens for the members of the ensemble WATER: Performers should be sure to bring their own bottled water with them each day. It is a good idea to buy a bottle at the start of the tour and refill it as necessary from public fountains or at your hotel.
